Project manager certifications: what job ads name in each country

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

Which project manager certifications to get depends on the country you apply in and on how long you have led projects. In our October 2026 count, the Project Management Professional (PMP) appears in 24% of 59,273 US project-manager ads, and PRINCE2 in 14% of 6,205 UK ones (Adzuna). Our verdict: with the experience PMI asks for, take the PMP for the US, India or Brazil and PRINCE2 for the UK.

Without that experience, the PMP is closed to you for now: PMI asks for 24 to 60 months of leading projects depending on your education (36 with a bachelor's degree). The beginner exams are the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM, $300) and PRINCE2 Foundation (£543 in the UK). The CAPM appears in 1.7% of the ads for US project managers, so treat it as an optional first step next to project work, not a hiring filter.

Which certification is best for a project manager, by country?

We searched one month of Adzuna job ads for the local project-manager job title (listed under the table) and counted the ads that name each credential or skill by its exact name. The table covers all 10 countries we track for this role. Where a share is under 1%, the cell shows the count of ads instead.

Source: Adzuna API, project-manager job ads collected in October 2026, matched by exact phrase; search titles gerente de projetos (Brazil), gerente de proyectos (Mexico), jefe de proyecto (Spain), chef de projet (France), Projektmanager (Germany), kierownik projektu (Poland), "project manager" elsewhere. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.

The countries fall into four groups. In the US, India and Brazil, the PMP is the name employers write down. In the UK, PRINCE2 is the name to know, with the PMP also present. Germany, Italy and Poland name both, each in a minority of ads. France has a large sample and low shares, while Spain and Mexico have too few ads for a reliable share.

US, India and Brazil: the PMP

The PMP appears in 24% of the 59,273 US ads. Of the same ads, 982 name the CAPM, 673 the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) and 304 PRINCE2. If you want a project-manager job with a US employer and you qualify for the PMP, it is the credential to get. If you plan to take a prep class, note one change. From December 1, 2026, live classes count toward the PMP's 35 training hours only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited program delivers them. Self-paced courses from any provider still count, and training finished before that date stays valid. Our page on PMP requirements, cost and the exam has the detail.

In India, the PMP appears in 24% of 2,413 project-manager ads, PRINCE2 in 8.6% and agile in 30%.

Brazil's sample is small: 281 ads for gerente de projetos. In that sample, the PMP appears in 35% of the ads and the CAPM in 5%. With a sample this size, read the Brazilian figures as a direction, not a precise rate.

The UK: PRINCE2

In the UK, PRINCE2 appears in 14% of the 6,205 project-manager ads we counted and the PMP in 6.9%. PRINCE2 has two exams. Foundation (£543) needs no experience, so a UK career changer can take it before landing a first project job; Practitioner (£604) is the second step and accepts Foundation, the PMP or the CAPM as its entry requirement. Our page on PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner has UK pay data, and our PMP vs PRINCE2 comparison helps if you are moving between the two markets.

The UK has a third option we do not count: the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) from the Association for Project Management. APM describes its candidates as people with two to three years of project experience, and the open exam costs £648 (£528 for APM members). See our APM PMQ page and APM PMQ vs PRINCE2.

Germany, Italy and Poland: both names appear

In these three countries, both PRINCE2 and the PMP appear, in different proportions. In Germany, PRINCE2 appears in 4.8% of 3,738 ads for Projektmanager and the PMP in 2.8%; both are rare, so treat either as a plus when you apply to German employers, not a requirement. In Italy, the PMP appears in 12% of 976 ads and PRINCE2 in 8%. Poland has only 310 ads for kierownik projektu: 36 name PRINCE2 and 19 the PMP.

Poland's counts are small enough to be noisy, so check the ads in your city and sector before you choose. Germany also has its own tradition: IPMA certification, run there by the national association GPM through PM-ZERT, is not in our count, so these figures do not show how often German ads name it. Our comparisons of IPMA and the PMP and IPMA and PRINCE2 cover that choice.

France, Spain and Mexico: little to go on

Of 10,557 French ads for chef de projet, 113 named the PMP and 93 PRINCE2. ITIL, the IT service management credential, appeared in 128 of the 10,557 French project-manager ads. Spain and Mexico have small samples (127 and 60 ads). In those, 9 Spanish ads and 7 Mexican ones named the PMP, too few to read as a share. In these three markets, treat a certificate as an addition to your experience, not the center of the application.

What the count misses

We match exact names. An ad that asks for "a recognized project management certification" without naming one is not counted, and neither is an ad that writes out "Project Management Professional" without the letters PMP. For Six Sigma we search the phrase six sigma green belt, so an ad that says only "Lean Six Sigma" is missed. An ad that says "PMP or PRINCE2" counts for both. We do not separate required from preferred. The figures show how often employers name a credential, from one month of ads; they say nothing about direction over time.

Entry-level project manager certification options for beginners

The best project management certification for beginners is one you can take without experience and that employers in your target country recognize. None of the five below needs project experience. The last two matter mainly if you work in the UK with PRINCE2 or in Germany.

The CAPM is the PMI route for beginners. It teaches PMI's vocabulary and requires 23 hours of project management education before you apply; it does not replace experience. See our page on whether the CAPM is worth it and our CAPM vs PMP comparison.

PRINCE2 Foundation is the beginner choice for the UK. Our count does not separate the two PRINCE2 levels: an ad that names PRINCE2 counts once, whichever level it wants.

The Google Project Management Certificate gives structured lessons at a low monthly price. It is a course certificate, not an exam-based certification, and employers rarely name it. Our comparisons of the CAPM and the Google certificate and of the Google certificate and the PMP weigh it against PMI's exams; it belongs to the wider Google Career Certificates family.

A course certificate proves you finished lessons. An exam-based certification proves you passed a supervised test set by a certifying body, and PMI and PeopleCert both require renewal. If you are starting from zero, a course can supply the 23 hours of education the CAPM requires; the exam is what ads name.

Best agile certification for project managers

In project-manager ads, agile shows up both as a skill and as a credential. The skill appears in 12% of the ads for US project managers, and the Jira tool in 5.2%. The PMI-ACP, the agile credential we count in project-manager ads, appears in 673 of the 59,273 US ads.

The best agile certification for a project manager is the one that matches the work you already do.

Your situation Best fit What it takes
You manage projects on agile teams in the US, India or Brazil PMI-ACP 24 months of agile experience in the past five years; 12 months with a PMI-accredited degree or an active agile certification from another body; or an active PMP. Plus 21 hours of agile training and $495 ($435 for PMI members)
You want to move toward a Scrum role Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) CSM: a 16-hour course, renewal every two years ($100). PSM I: $200 exam, no renewal

We count Scrum credentials in Scrum-master ads, not in project-manager ads, so our page on Scrum master certifications has the CSM and PSM figures. For PMI's own agile exam, see PMI-ACP vs PMP and CAPM vs PMI-ACP. If your target ads ask for agile experience and you have none, get it on a real team first; an agile credential means more once you can describe the sprints you ran.

Other credentials in project-manager ads

A few credentials from neighboring fields appear in project-manager ads, where the work overlaps with quality, IT operations or risk.

Six Sigma Green Belt is a process-improvement credential used in operations and manufacturing projects. It appeared in 364 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads. ASQ's exam costs $483 for non-members and asks for three years of experience; IASSC's costs €361 with no prerequisite. Our Six Sigma overview leads to the Green Belt, Black Belt and PMP vs Six Sigma pages.

ITIL 4 Foundation is about IT service management, which matters to project managers in IT operations. PeopleCert's exam bundle costs €649. In October 2026, ITIL appeared in 1.2% of the ads for US project managers. Our ITIL page reports its job-ad figures, and our ITIL vs PMP comparison sets the two side by side.

The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) is built for risk specialists. It costs $670 ($520 for PMI members) and needs 24 months of project risk experience with a bachelor's degree. We do not count it in ads; the PMI-RMP page has the rest.

Is a project management certification worth it?

Whether a project manager certification is worth it depends on which credential and which country. The case for paying rests on how often employers name a credential: the PMP appears in 24% of the ads for US project managers, and PRINCE2 in 14% of 6,205 UK ads. A beginner credential is worth it as training and as a step toward one of those two, not as a ticket past a resume screen.

The exam prices side by side: the PMP costs $655, or $405 for PMI members, who pay a separate yearly membership fee. The CAPM costs $300 ($225 for members), PRINCE2 Foundation £543 and PRINCE2 Practitioner £604 in PeopleCert's UK store.

Three groups get the most from paying. Experienced project managers who apply in the US, India or Brazil come first. Anyone applying for UK project jobs comes next, since PRINCE2 Foundation needs no experience. Coordinators who plan to take the PMP later are the third group, because the CAPM teaches PMI's vocabulary.

On pay, PMI says PMP holders in the US earn a median salary of $135,000. That is PMI's own figure, and holders also have years of experience, so it does not show what the credential adds by itself. We have no pay figure for CAPM holders. Our PRINCE2 page has UK pay data for project roles.

Two groups can skip it for now. If you already lead projects and your target ads name no credential, as is true of most French ads, your track record says more. If you have neither experience nor a target country, a course certificate will not decide an application for you; a first project role will.

Do you need a certification to be a project manager?

No. Our count shows that most project-manager ads name none of the credentials we track. Even the PMP is absent from the large majority of US ads.

What certification do you need for project management jobs?

None is required; the one that helps depends on where you apply. In the US, India and Brazil, aim for the PMP once you qualify; in the UK, PRINCE2. In Germany, Italy and Poland, check local ads first, because both PRINCE2 and the PMP appear in a minority of ads there. The country table above covers the rest.

Can you get a job with a project management certificate?

Rarely on its own. In the US, the PMP needs years of experience, and PMI may audit that record. Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads in October 2026, 14,183 named the PMP, 982 the CAPM and 19 the Google certificate. The UK is different: PRINCE2 Foundation needs no experience, and PRINCE2 appeared in 14% of the ads for UK project managers.

A career switch to project management: which credential first

For a career switch to project management, this is the order we suggest:

  1. Find project work: coordinator, assistant or team-lead roles where you run parts of projects. Keep a record of the months you lead them.
  2. Alongside it, take the beginner exam for your target country if you can afford it: the CAPM for the US, India or Brazil, PRINCE2 Foundation for the UK.
  3. Apply for the PMP once you have 36 months of leading projects with a bachelor's degree, 24 with a PMI-accredited degree, or 60 with a secondary diploma.

If you do not have a degree, our guide to becoming a project manager without a degree covers that route.

Best certifications for project managers: what Reddit posters ask

We grouped the questions people post about these credentials on Reddit. The most common kind asks whether a credential is worth it at all. One poster asked: "Are there certifications that hiring managers actually value (e.g., PMP, CAPM, CSM, PRINCE2, etc.)?" (r/scrum, September 2025). Our data answers it by country: the PMP in US, Indian and Brazilian ads, PRINCE2 in UK ads, and the CAPM in a small share of ads in every country we track.

Newcomers ask whether the CAPM is a good starting point or whether experience should come first (r/PMCareers, September 2026), and whether the Google course is worth it (r/projectmanagement, June 2026). Holders ask what comes next: "What's next after PMP: PMI-ACP, PSM, or CSM?" (r/pmp, July 2026). The agile section answers that one by goal.

Project management sits next to two roles we cover with the same method. A Scrum master runs the team process inside agile projects, and a product manager decides what gets built. For every credential in this field in one place, see the project management field overview.

Questions people ask

What is the best certificate for project managers?

It depends on the country and on your experience. For project managers with the experience PMI asks for, the PMP is the credential to aim for in the US, India and Brazil: it appeared in 24% of the ads for US project managers in October 2026 (Adzuna). In the UK, PRINCE2 is the name to have; it appeared in 14% of the ads for UK project managers. Without that experience, start with the CAPM or PRINCE2 Foundation, which have no experience requirement.

Is a PMP certificate worth it?

For experienced project managers who want jobs in the US, India or Brazil, yes. Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted in October 2026, 14,183 named the PMP. It costs $655 at PMI's non-member price ($405 for members) and needs 36 months of leading projects if you have a bachelor's degree. Our PMP page covers the cost, the exam and salary data in detail.

What is 90% of a project manager's job?

We cannot confirm that figure. You will often see 90% quoted for the time a project manager spends communicating, but we have no data on how project managers spend their time, and job ads cannot show it. What the ads do show is the methods and tools employers write down: agile appears in 12% of the ads for US project managers and Jira in 5.2% (October 2026, Adzuna).

What certification should I get for project management?

Match the credential to your experience first and your country second. With the experience PMI asks for (36 months of leading projects with a bachelor's degree), take the PMP for the US, India or Brazil; for the UK, take PRINCE2. With less, the CAPM ($300, or $225 for PMI members) is the PMI starting point and PRINCE2 Foundation (£543 in PeopleCert's UK store) the UK one. Neither needs project experience.

Which certification is best for project management?

No single title wins everywhere. In October 2026, the PMP appeared in 24% of 59,273 US project-manager ads and PRINCE2 in 14% of 6,205 UK ones (Adzuna). The CAPM, the PMI-ACP and Six Sigma Green Belt each appeared in a small fraction of the ads in both countries.

What is the best certification for a program manager?

Our count on this page covers project-manager ads. We count program-manager ads separately (30,691 US ads in October 2026) and do not break down the credentials they name here, so we cannot rank credentials for that role from our data. If the program-manager ads you are reading name the PMP or PRINCE2, the country advice on this page applies to them too.

Is it worth getting a certificate in project management?

As training, a course certificate can be worth it; as a hiring signal, rarely. The Google Project Management Certificate, a course certificate on Coursera, appeared in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads in October 2026. Exam-based certifications are a different matter: the PMP appeared in 24% of the ads for US project managers and PRINCE2 in 14% of 6,205 UK project-manager ads. A course is most useful when it prepares you for one of those exams, for example by covering the CAPM's 23 hours of required education.
