Which Scrum master certifications are worth it?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

16% of scrum master job ads in the United States name the Scrum Master (150 of 946, Adzuna, October 2026)

Scrum master certifications are worth it if you want a Scrum-master job in the US or India, where some employers write one into the ad. In our October 2026 count of 946 US Scrum-master ads (Adzuna), the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance appears in 22% of the ads and the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) from Scrum.org in 12%.

The PSM I is the cheapest to get if you pass the first time: a $200 exam per attempt, no required course and no renewal fee. The CSM needs a 16-hour course priced at $250 to $2,495 and renews every two years for $100. SAFe Scrum Master suits employers that run the Scaled Agile Framework; its exam alone is $495 and it renews every year for $195. How we count ads.

Which one fits, by situation:

  • Your target ads name the CSM, or an employer will pay for a class: take the CSM.
  • You are paying for it yourself and can study from the Scrum Guide and practice tests: take the PSM I.
  • Your employer, or the employers you apply to, run SAFe with release trains and PI Planning: take SAFe Scrum Master.
  • You already manage projects and are weighing the PMP or PMI-ACP: read PMP vs Scrum master first.

Is a Scrum master certification worth it in 2026? What the job ads show

For US Scrum-master jobs, yes, as a screening item. Of the 946 US ads with Scrum master in the job title that we counted in October 2026, the CSM appears in 22%, the PSM in 12% and the plain phrase scrum master certification in 16%. Ads with that phrase do not always name an issuer, so read the full ad before you choose. The counts overlap, since one ad can name both the CSM and the PSM, so the shares cannot be added up. We search the phrases certified scrum master and professional scrum master. Ads that write only CSM or PSM, or Scrum Alliance's one-word spelling ScrumMaster, may not be counted, so the CSM share in particular may be higher. The PSM phrase can also catch ads that use "professional" as a plain adjective.

SAFe Scrum Master appears in 22% of the ads for US Scrum masters.

The data shows which credentials employers write down. It does not show how employers whose ads name no credential weigh one, and Scrum Alliance itself says that certification is not required to get a Scrum-master job. Credentials from other bodies, sold as agile Scrum master certifications, may cover the same material; we have not counted them in ads.

Is the Professional Scrum Master (or any agile Scrum master) certification worth it?

For someone paying their own way, it is the best value of the three. The PSM I costs $200 per attempt, needs no course and never expires, so there is no renewal bill (Scrum.org). The phrase professional scrum master turns up in US Scrum-master ads, though some of those may use "professional" as a plain adjective; check that an ad means Scrum.org's credential. If a specific employer asks for the CSM, take the CSM; if the ad accepts the CSM, the PSM or a similar credential, the PSM I covers it for less money, if you pass the first time.

Scrum master certifications in India and the UK

Of the 193 Indian Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026, the CSM appears in 32% and the PSM in 10%. In a sample this small, those shares can move by several percentage points from one month to the next, so read them as a direction, not a precise figure.

The UK sample is small. The CSM appears in 6 of the 67 UK Scrum-master ads in October 2026, the PSM in 2. That is too few ads to say which credential UK employers prefer.

Europe, Brazil and Mexico

In France and Germany we have so far searched Scrum-master ads only for the English phrase scrum master certification. It appeared in 3 of the 232 French ads and 2 of the 116 German ads. We have not yet counted the CSM or the PSM by name in those countries, so these counts say little about either one there.

Brazil (43 Scrum-master ads), Spain (42), Poland (47), Italy (20) and Mexico (16) had too few ads in October 2026 for a share we would stand behind.

CSM vs PSM vs SAFe Scrum Master: cost, exam and renewal

All three test the same core idea, Scrum, but they are sold in different ways. Scrum Alliance sells a class with a test attached; Scrum.org sells a test, with classes optional; Scaled Agile sells the exam, its training partners sell courses that include it, and the credential is about Scrum inside a large SAFe organization.

CSM PSM I SAFe Scrum Master
Issued by Scrum Alliance Scrum.org Scaled Agile
Course Required: 16 hours, usually over 2 to 3 days Optional; every Scrum.org class includes a free exam attempt Optional for the proctored exam
Price to get it $250 to $2,495 (course, set by the trainer; two test attempts included) $200 per exam attempt; $279 with Scrum.org's self-paced course $495 for the proctored exam (two attempts); or included in a course priced by the training partner
Exam 50 questions, 60 minutes, 37 correct to pass (74%) 80 questions, 60 minutes, 85% to pass 45 questions, 90 minutes, 80% to pass
Renewal $100 and 20 Scrum Education Units every two years None; lifetime $195 a year and 12 continuing education units a year
Cost to stay certified for three years $350 to $2,595 $200 $885 on the exam-only route

Source: Scrum Alliance CSM and renewal pages; Scrum.org PSM I page; Scaled Agile SAFe Scrum Master page and support articles. Fees read October 3 and 4, 2026, in US dollars, before tax; three-year totals assume a pass on the included attempts. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

The three-year line is where the credentials differ most. A CSM bought from the cheapest trainer plus one renewal comes to $350. The PSM I stays at $200 for life. SAFe Scrum Master costs $495 for the exam and then $195 every year, so after three years the exam-only route has cost $885, plus tax.

Failing costs different amounts too. Each PSM I exam password (Scrum.org's name for an exam voucher) is good for one attempt, so a second try is another $200. The CSM course includes two attempts within 90 days. On the SAFe course route, the first two attempts are included within 60 days and later ones cost $50 each; on the exam-only route, two failed attempts mean buying the $495 exam again (Scaled Agile support).

How long does a Scrum master certification last?

It depends on the issuer: two years for the CSM, a lifetime for the PSM I and one year at a time for SAFe Scrum Master.

What it costs to keep a Scrum master certification, per year
SAFe Scrum Master renews every year for $195; the CSM renews every two years for $100, about $50 a year; the PSM I never needs renewing.
Show the numbers

Item
SAFe Scrum Master (Scaled Agile)$195 a year
CSM (Scrum Alliance)$100 every two years
PSM I (Scrum.org)$0, lifetime

The CSM renews every two years. You log 20 Scrum Education Units (one hour of learning counts as one unit) and pay $100. The higher Scrum Alliance levels cost more to keep: the Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) needs 30 units and $175, and the Certified Scrum Professional ScrumMaster (CSP-SM) 40 units and $250, each per two years.

Scrum.org certifications do not expire. The PSM I, and the harder PSM II and PSM III above it, carry no renewal fee and no credit requirement.

SAFe works on a yearly membership. Foundational certifications, which include SAFe Scrum Master, renew for $195 a year plus tax with 12 continuing education units a year. Scaled Agile says there are no late fees and no exam retakes to renew, so a lapsed SAFe certification can be renewed later without a new test.

How hard are the exams?

The PSM I has the strictest passing score of the three. It asks 80 questions in 60 minutes, which leaves 45 seconds a question, and you need 85% to pass. The questions mix multiple choice, multiple answer and true/false, in English, Japanese or Simplified Chinese (Scrum.org).

The CSM test comes after the class. Scrum Alliance gives you access to it only once you have completed the course with a Certified Scrum Trainer; then you have 90 days and two attempts to answer 37 of 50 questions correctly within an hour.

The SAFe Scrum Master exam has 45 questions in 90 minutes, with 80% needed to pass. It covers Scrum inside SAFe: about 14% to 16% of it is on PI Planning, an event that plain Scrum does not have, and 12% to 14% on using AI in the Scrum-master role (Scaled Agile exam guidelines). The course runs in eight languages, including Spanish, German and Brazilian Portuguese.

We cannot give a reliable study-time figure. Beyond the 16-hour CSM class, none of the issuers states one, and the Reddit posts we collected hold fewer than 10 first-hand study-time reports for the PSM I, too few for a median we would trust.

Best entry-level Scrum master certification for beginners

None of the three asks for work experience, so any of them is an entry-level Scrum master certification in that sense. Scaled Agile places SAFe Scrum Master at its foundational level, for people new to SAFe. The choice for a beginner comes down to how you learn and who pays:

  • Learning alone on a tight budget: the PSM I, at $200 for the exam. Scrum.org's $279 bundle adds its self-paced course.
  • Wanting a teacher and a class: the CSM, where the course is part of the price.
  • Already working somewhere that runs SAFe: SAFe Scrum Master, often paid for by the employer.

A credential helps a beginner pass a screen; it does not supply the experience some employers want. Scrum Alliance puts it plainly: some employers hire Scrum masters at entry level, while others look for people who have done the job before. Our guide to becoming a Scrum master without a degree or experience covers the routes in.

Two related questions come up often. If you lean toward the product-owner side, Scrum.org's PSPO I has the same format and the same $200 fee as the PSM I. And if your goal is project management rather than Scrum teams, PMI's entry-level CAPM needs no experience and costs $225 to $300.

Scrum master certification job opportunities: what else the ads ask for

The certificate is one line in the ad; tools are another. In the same October 2026 US count, Jira appears in 65% of the ads, Kanban in 32% and the CSM in 22%. In India, Jira appears in 58% of the ads and Kanban in 38%. Our reading: hands-on Jira use is a skill to show on your resume alongside the certificate, since employers name it in the same ads.

The job itself sits close to project management. O*NET, the US government's job database, lists Scrum Master as a job title under information technology project managers and names Scrum Alliance and PMI among the certification bodies for that occupation. For scale, we counted 946 US Scrum-master ads and 59,273 US project-manager ads in October 2026.

For every certificate employers name for this job, country by country, see which certifications Scrum-master ads ask for. Credentials for product owners, agile coaches and related roles are on our agile and Scrum field page.

Scrum master certification salary: what official data shows

No official source publishes pay by Scrum certificate. Scrum Alliance, Scrum.org and Scaled Agile do not say what holders earn on the pages we read, and the BLS wage data we found does not list Scrum masters as a separate occupation.

The nearest official figure comes through O*NET. It files Scrum Master under information technology project managers, and for that occupation it shows BLS wage data for the wider group "computer occupations, all other": a median of $116,580 a year, or $56.05 an hour, in 2025. The same group employed 472,000 people in 2024, and the BLS projects it to grow much faster than average (7% or more) from 2024 to 2034.

Read the figure as a rough benchmark, not a promise. It covers everyone in a broad group, certified or not, and many of those jobs are not Scrum-master jobs. It cannot tell you how much a CSM or PSM adds to your own pay.

Scrum master certification salary in India

We have no official salary source for Scrum masters in India, so we do not quote a figure. What our data shows is demand: the CSM appeared in 32% of the 193 Indian Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026, a small sample. If you want a salary benchmark, compare the offers in ads that state a range for the city you plan to work in.

Scrum master certification vs agile project-manager credentials

They point at different job titles. A Scrum master certification is aimed at the person who runs a Scrum team's events and removes blockers. Agile project-manager credentials, such as PMI's PMI-ACP, are aimed at people who already manage agile projects, and they ask for experience first.

The PMI-ACP costs $495, or $435 for PMI members. It requires 21 hours of agile training and 24 months of agile experience, or 12 months if you hold an active third-party agile certification such as the CSM or PSM, and the exam has 120 questions in 180 minutes. It renews every three years with 30 professional development units (PMI). It appears in 1.1% of the ads for US project managers (project-manager ads, not Scrum-master ads). Our PMI-ACP vs Scrum master comparison covers who should take which.

The PMP asks for even more: 24 to 60 months of project experience before a 180-question exam. If you are deciding between a project-manager track and a Scrum-team track, start with the job ads you want to answer.

Best Scrum master certification: what Reddit posters ask

We read questions that mention a Scrum master certification, posted in r/scrum, r/agile, r/pmp, r/PMCareers and r/projectmanagement between April 2025 and September 2026. These are the questions posters asked, with our answers. Reddit is a self-selected sample, so treat the list as a guide to common doubts, not as statistics.

  • "PSM or CSM, which one should I take?" is the classic best-certification question (r/scrum, June 2025; r/pmp, July 2026). Our answer: check your target ads first, since US ads name both (see what the job ads show). If the ads accept either, the PSM I is cheaper over any period, as long as you pass on the first attempt; a second attempt brings it to $400.
  • Whether Scrum Alliance checks that you took the course (r/scrum, September 2025). Yes: Scrum Alliance gives access to the CSM test only after you complete the course.
  • Whether a second Scrum master credential adds anything when you already hold the CSM and SAFe (r/scrum, September 2025). The exams cover overlapping Scrum material. A second credential mainly helps if your target ads name it.
  • Which opened more doors, the CSM or the PMP (r/PMCareers, July 2026). They answer different ads: Scrum-master ads for the CSM, project-manager ads for the PMP.
  • How to get into Scrum with no related background, for example after military service (r/scrum, October 2025). None of the three credentials has a prerequisite; our beginners section sets out the choice.
  • Which course is best for learning Scrum and getting certified (r/scrum, May 2025). For the CSM, the course is the certification route, so compare trainers within Scrum Alliance's $250 to $2,495 range. For the PSM I, any preparation works, because Scrum.org sells the exam on its own.

Questions people ask

Is a Scrum master cert worth it?

It is if the jobs you want ask for one, and in the US some do. In October 2026 the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) appeared in 22% of the ads for US Scrum masters and the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) in 12% (Adzuna). It will not replace experience. Scrum Alliance itself says certification is not required to get a Scrum-master job, though some employers ask for the CSM. The cheapest way to find out whether you like the material is the PSM I exam at $200, with no course and no renewal fee.

Is the CSM harder than the PMP?

No. The CSM has no experience requirement: you take a 16-hour course and then a one-hour test of 50 questions, and you need 37 right. The PMP asks for 24 to 60 months of project experience, depending on your education, before you may take a 180-question exam that lasts 240 minutes, and PMI does not publish a passing score. They also answer different job ads; our PMP vs Scrum master comparison covers who needs which.

What is a CSM certification salary?

No official source publishes a salary for CSM holders, and we found none on the Scrum Alliance pages we read. The closest neutral figure is from the US government: O*NET lists Scrum Master as a job title under IT project managers, and the BLS median for that wage group (computer occupations, all other) was $116,580 a year in 2025. That covers everyone in the group, certified or not, so it cannot tell you what the CSM itself adds.

Are Scrum masters still in demand?

Employers still post the job. We counted 946 US Scrum-master ads in October 2026, and 193 in India (Adzuna). The US government expects the wage group that contains IT project managers, the occupation O*NET files Scrum Master under, to grow much faster than average from 2024 to 2034 (7% or more). We have one month of ad data, so we make no claim about whether demand is rising or falling. Our Scrum-master job page has the full count of what employers ask for.

Is being a Scrum master a difficult job?

The hard part is mostly people work. Scrum Alliance describes the day as facilitating conversations, removing what blocks the team and coaching team members, and it lists traits such as being people-oriented and having high emotional intelligence. The ads add tools: Jira appears in 65% of the ads for US Scrum masters. Scrum Alliance also says some employers hire Scrum masters at entry level, while others want previous experience. What the job asks for, country by country, is on our Scrum-master job page.

Do Scrum masters get paid well?

Official data suggests so, with a caveat. The BLS median for the broad wage group that contains IT project managers, under which O*NET lists Scrum Master, was $116,580 a year in 2025, but that group covers far more than Scrum masters. No official source splits pay by certificate; our salary section sets out what the figure can and cannot tell you.

Is a Coursera or Udemy Scrum master certification worth it?

Only as preparation. A Coursera or Udemy course gives you that platform's course certificate, not the CSM, the PSM or SAFe Scrum Master, the credentials employers name. A course can prepare you for the PSM I, because Scrum.org requires no course and sells the exam alone, at $200 per attempt. It cannot replace the CSM course, which is taught by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer and is the only way to the CSM test. See our Coursera page for how employers treat its certificates in general.

Is a Scrum master certification with job placement worth it?

Be careful. None of the three issuers sells a job with its certificate: the Scrum Alliance, Scrum.org and Scaled Agile pages we read describe courses, exams and renewal, and Scrum Alliance says certification is not required to get a Scrum-master job. Any placement offer comes from a third party, not from the issuer. Before you pay extra, ask which credential you will hold at the end: the CSM, the PSM I, SAFe Scrum Master or only the company's own certificate. Then compare the price with the official fees: $200 for the PSM I exam, $250 to $2,495 for a CSM course.
