Is the Certified Scrum Master (CSM) worth it in 2026?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

22% of scrum master job ads in the United States name the CSM (210 of 946, Adzuna, October 2026)

The Certified Scrum Master (CSM) is worth it if you want a Scrum-master job and the ads you read ask for it. Of the 946 US Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), the phrase certified scrum master appeared in 22%. The required course costs $250 to $2,495.

The certification does not by itself supply the experience some ads ask for. Its issuer, Scrum Alliance, spells it Certified ScrumMaster and calls the CSM its introductory certification for Scrum masters, the first of three levels on its Scrum-master track. You earn it by taking a 16-hour course from a Scrum Alliance certified trainer and then passing a short online test. There is no exam-only route, so the course price is the price of the certification.

Who should take it, by situation:

  • Your target ads list the CSM as a requirement, or an employer will pay for the class: take it. Check whether the ad adds or equivalent.
  • You want a live class rather than self-study: the CSM is built around one.
  • You are paying for it yourself and the ads you read accept other Scrum credentials: compare first in CSM vs PSM.
  • Your target employers run the Scaled Agile Framework: read CSM vs SAFe before you book.
  • You want project-manager jobs rather than a Scrum-team role: start with the PMP page and the ads for that job.
  • You are paying for it yourself and have not yet read the ads for the jobs you want: skip it for now and read them first.

Is the Certified Scrum Master worth it? What US job ads show

It depends on the ads, and in the US a share of them name it. In October 2026, the exact phrase certified scrum master appeared in 22% of the ads for US Scrum masters, from Adzuna listings with "Scrum master" in the job title.

Our US share probably understates how many ads mention the credential, because we count the exact phrase certified scrum master and an ad that writes only CSM, or Scrum Alliance's one-word spelling ScrumMaster, may not be counted. The count also shows how often employers write the phrase, not whether they require it or accept an alternative. Our methodology page explains how we match phrases and job titles.

Put the other way, the rest of the US ads in our count did not contain the phrase. If the ads you plan to answer name the CSM, without it you will be missing something the employer wrote down. If they do not, the fee buys training and a line on your resume.

In India, the phrase certified scrum master appeared in 32% of 193 Indian Scrum-master ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). With a base of that size, the share can move noticeably from one month to the next.

In the UK, the phrase appeared in 6 of the 67 UK Scrum-master ads in October 2026, too few to read as a share.

Scrum Alliance's CSM page calls the CSM one of the "most demanded certifications by employers and recruiters"; on that page we found no source for the claim. Its wording elsewhere on the same page is more modest: certification is not required to get a job as a Scrum master, though certain employers ask for the CSM. Our ad count measures that second statement: how often employers write the credential down.

Which certifications do Scrum-master employers name?

The ones in the ads for the job you want. In the same October 2026 US count, the phrase professional scrum master, for Scrum.org's PSM, appeared in 12% of the ads for US Scrum masters (Adzuna). The PMP, CAPM and PRINCE2 that r/scrum posters ask about are credentials for other jobs: we count the CSM in Scrum-master ads and the PMP in project-manager ads. Our Scrum-master job page lists every certification and skill that Scrum-master ads name, country by country, and our guide to Scrum master certifications sets the CSM next to the PSM and SAFe Scrum Master.

Is the Certified Scrum Master worth it for a beginner?

It can be, if you go in knowing what the certificate does and does not prove. The Scrum Alliance help center describes the CSM course as introductory, for working or aspiring Scrum masters and anyone new to Scrum or agile work, and sets no experience requirement for it.

What it proves is narrow. Because the course is required and the test is open book, the CSM shows that you completed the training and passed the test. It does not show that you have run a Scrum team, and employers who ask for experience are asking for something the certificate does not supply.

The issuer adds that you can apply for Scrum-master openings without having held the job, and that "many scrum masters gain experience on the job" (Scrum Alliance). For someone switching careers, the course offers a structured introduction. Our guide's beginners section sets it against the other entry routes, and our page on becoming a Scrum master without a degree or experience covers the ways in.

On the plain question of whether the CSM is worth it (r/agile, r/scrum), our evidence is the US ad count above and the cost table below.

Should you take the PSM instead of the CSM?

Take the CSM if the ads you target name it or an employer pays for the class. If the ads accept either, compare the two in our CSM vs PSM comparison.

The practical difference is the route. Scrum.org's Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) is a $200 test per attempt with no required course; the CSM costs $250 to $2,495 because the course is part of it. Check the current fees on our PSM page before you decide.

CSM or PMP: which opens more doors?

They open different doors. In our data, the CSM is counted in Scrum-master ads and the PMP in project-manager ads, so each one answers a different job title. Posters also ask whether the PMP carries more weight even in agile teams. We have not measured that. If your target is agile project management, PMI's agile credential is the PMI-ACP, and our CSM vs PMI-ACP comparison sets the two side by side.

A similar question came from a customer success manager who needed to run large customer onboarding projects (r/PMCareers). Onboarding projects are project work rather than Scrum-team work. The PMP asks for documented experience leading projects, so check its requirements on the PMP page and read the ads for that job first. The CSM fits if that work is organized in Scrum teams.

What do you get for the CSM course fee?

You get the course, the test and the certification in one purchase. The issuer's help center lists what the payment covers:

  • 16 hours of training with a Certified Scrum Trainer, live online or in person. Most classes run over two to three days (Scrum Alliance).
  • Access to the CSM test and a certification account, with two test attempts included.
  • A complimentary two-year Scrum Alliance membership.
  • Training materials, as provided by the training company.

The price is set by the trainer, not by Scrum Alliance, which publishes a range of $250 to $2,495 and says prices vary by region, format and other market factors. Its page notes that the range is based on public course prices on scrumalliance.org as of October 2023, so check the current price of each course you consider. All prices here are in US dollars, and this page holds no rupee price list for courses taught in India, so ask the trainer for the local quote.

The course rule is strict. The issuer's help center says you cannot skip the course or apply directly for the test, and that prior experience or other agile and Scrum certifications are no substitute. Our step-by-step list for the CSM, from booking a course to the test, is in the Scrum-master certification guide.

How much does the CSM cost to keep?

Between $350 and $2,595 if you keep it for four years. The course fee covers the first two years; after that, the CSM renews every two years for $100 plus 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs), the learning credits Scrum Alliance asks for.

What you pay Low end of the range High end of the range
Course, two test attempts included (certified for two years) $250 $2,495
Course plus one renewal (certified for four years) $350 $2,595
Course plus two renewals (certified for six years) $450 $2,695

Source: Scrum Alliance CSM page (course price range, based on public course prices as of October 2023) and renewing-certifications page ($100 foundational renewal every two years), checked October 5, 2026. Totals assume a pass within the two included attempts. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

The table counts fees only. According to Scrum Alliance, you cannot buy SEUs: you earn them through learning such as reading, webinars and agile events.

A failed test adds little to the bill: after two attempts, or after 90 calendar days, each further attempt costs $25. The trainer's price is the larger unknown.

What happens if you let the CSM lapse?

You can renew late. Scrum Alliance says it never revokes a CSM for a missed renewal, and a late renewal runs two full years from the renewal date. Taking any other Scrum Alliance certification course renews your earlier certifications, even expired ones, with no SEUs or fee. A course costs more than the $100 renewal, so renew with SEUs unless you want the training.

Which Certified Scrum Master certification course is best?

The one whose trainer, format and price suit you, because every CSM course leads to the same certification. The issuer says it cannot recommend specific trainers. Its course listings show each course's price, agenda, who should attend and any discounts, with reviews of the trainer from past students, validated by Trustpilot.

Checks before you pay:

  • Scrum Alliance lists the trainer as a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) or Certified Scrum Alliance Trainer (CSAT), the designations it gives trainers of courses such as the CSM. Confirm it on the course search page, because only a qualifying Scrum Alliance course gives access to the CSM test.
  • The format suits you: Scrum Alliance says the CSM course is live online or in person.
  • The class is taught in your language: Scrum Alliance's trainer search finds trainers by the language they teach in.
  • The listing says which training materials are included, since these come from the training company.
  • The agenda, the who-should-attend notes and the reviews match what you want from the 16 hours.
  • The price is close to the published range. A quote far above it is worth questioning.

If your question is which Scrum certification is best, not which CSM course, the answer depends on the ads you target. Our guide to Scrum master certifications compares the CSM with the PSM and SAFe Scrum Master on cost, test and renewal.

What is the CSM test like?

It is a short, open-book online test on the material of the course. Scrum Alliance's figures: 50 multiple-choice questions in one hour, and you need 37 correct, a score of at least 74%. That leaves 72 seconds a question. The issuer offers no practice test.

The test is not proctored, and there is no test center. You may use the Scrum Guide and the materials from your course while you answer. You cannot pause the test once it starts, but you can bookmark questions to come back to.

A passed test cannot be retaken for a better score. If you need more than the 60 minutes, Scrum Alliance accepts accommodation requests through its support team. The test comes in 13 languages, including Spanish, German, Japanese and Polish; check each course listing for the language the class is taught in.

Does a second Scrum credential add anything after the CSM?

Only if the ads you target name it. Posters ask which advanced certifications are worth the money (r/scrum). Within Scrum Alliance, the next two levels need Scrum-master work experience:

  • Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM): a CSM (active or expired) or a PSM I or PSM II, a course of at least 16 hours, and 12 months of Scrum-master work in the past five years, before or after the course.
  • Certified Scrum Professional ScrumMaster (CSP-SM): an A-CSM (active or expired), the CSP-SM course, and 24 months of Scrum-master work in the past five years.

If you hold more than one level on the track, you renew only the highest one. Renewing the A-CSM ($175 and 30 SEUs every two years) also keeps the CSM current, so the renewal fees do not stack (Scrum Alliance renewing-certifications page, checked October 5, 2026). The renewal fee for each level is in our guide's section on how long Scrum master certifications last.

Outside Scrum Alliance, our CSM vs SAFe comparison covers employers that run the Scaled Agile Framework.

Other posters ask how the CSM compares with ICAgile certifications (r/scrum). We have not checked ICAgile's requirements or fees, so this page does not compare them.

For product owners, agile coaches and related roles, our agile and Scrum field page lists the credentials we track.

Does the CSM raise your salary?

We found no source that measures pay for CSM holders, and Scrum Alliance's CSM page gives no salary figure. We do not repeat salary claims from course sellers that give no sample or method. The closest official figure, for the wider job group that includes Scrum masters, is in the salary section of our Scrum-master certification guide, with what it can and cannot tell you. Indian readers will find an India salary section in the same guide.

Questions people ask

Is the Certified Scrum Master worth it in 2026?

The Certified Scrum Master (CSM) is worth it if you want a Scrum-master job and the ads for that job ask for it. The exact phrase certified scrum master appeared in 22% of the 946 US Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna). Ads that write only CSM or ScrumMaster may not be counted, so the true share may be higher. Scrum Alliance prices its course at $250 to $2,495 and says certification is not required to get a Scrum-master job.

How much does the CSM cost in total?

The CSM course costs $250 to $2,495, the range Scrum Alliance publishes (based on public course prices as of October 2023; each trainer sets the price). The course fee includes two test attempts and a two-year Scrum Alliance membership. Keeping the CSM active costs $100 and 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) every two years, so the course plus one renewal comes to $350 to $2,595 and keeps you certified for four years (Scrum Alliance, checked October 5, 2026).

Can you take the CSM test without the course?

No. Scrum Alliance offers no exam-only route to the Certified ScrumMaster: you must complete a 16-hour CSM course taught by a Scrum Alliance certified trainer, live online or in person, before you get access to the test. Prior experience and other agile or Scrum certifications do not replace the course (Scrum Alliance help center, checked October 5, 2026).

What happens if you fail the CSM test?

You can take the CSM test again. The course fee covers two attempts within 90 calendar days. After two failed attempts, or once the 90 days have passed, each further attempt costs $25, and no extension request is needed. You need 37 correct answers out of 50, a score of at least 74% (Scrum Alliance, checked October 5, 2026).

Does the CSM expire?

Yes. The CSM runs on a two-year cycle from the date you earn it. To renew, you log 20 Scrum Education Units and pay $100. If you miss the date, Scrum Alliance says it never revokes the CSM: you can renew later, and the new two-year term starts on the renewal date. After it expires, your member benefits stay open for 90 days, but you drop out of Scrum Alliance's Member Search, so an employer who wants to verify it must go through Scrum Alliance support and needs your consent. Taking any other Scrum Alliance certification course renews it too (Scrum Alliance, checked October 5, 2026).

Is the CSM test proctored?

No. The CSM test is given online, without a proctor and without a test center. It is open book, so you may use the Scrum Guide and your course materials. You have one hour for 50 multiple-choice questions, and you cannot pause the test once it starts. It is offered in 13 languages, including English, Spanish, German, Japanese and Polish (Scrum Alliance help center, checked October 5, 2026).

Can you get a Scrum-master job with only the CSM and no experience?

Scrum Alliance says you can apply for Scrum-master openings without having done the job, and that Scrum masters can gain experience on the job. Its CSM page adds that some Scrum masters start at entry level while other employers look for previous experience. The CSM course itself needs no prior Scrum experience, but it does not supply the experience some ads ask for, so read the ads for the jobs you want before you pay (Scrum Alliance, checked October 5, 2026).
