Is the CAPM certification worth it?
1.7% of project manager job ads in the United States name the CAPM (982 of 59,273, Adzuna, October 2026)
CAPM certification is worth it for a beginner who cannot apply for the PMP yet. It teaches the basics; it does not win a job. The CAPM needs no project experience and costs $300 ($225 for PMI members). In October 2026, among 59,273 US project-manager ads (Adzuna), it appears in 1.7% of the ads; the PMP in 24% of the ads. How we count ads.
CAPM (from PMI) stands for Certified Associate in Project Management.
Verdict by situation:
- Student, new graduate or project coordinator with no project-lead experience: the CAPM is a reasonable first credential.
- Three or more years leading projects: skip it and go for the PMP.
- Applying for jobs in the UK: look at PRINCE2 first.
- Weighing the two PMI credentials against each other: our CAPM vs PMP comparison covers timing and order.

Is CAPM certification worth it in 2026? What the job ads show
We count how often employers name the CAPM in ads for project managers, using the local job title in each country. The US count: 982 ads named it out of 59,273. In India, the CAPM appears in 1.2% of the ads for project managers (2,413 ads in total). In Brazil, the CAPM appears in 5% of the ads for gerente de projetos, but that sample has 281 ads, so a handful of ads can move the share.
Europe is a different picture. The CAPM appeared in 8 of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads, one of the 10,557 French ads for chef de projet and none of the 3,738 German ads for Projektmanager. The Mexico (60 ads) and Spain (127 ads) samples are too small to read yet.
The shares above show how often employers name the CAPM in these ads. The count cannot tell whether those who leave it out would still value it. Our reading: the CAPM works as a supporting line on a resume, a sign that a junior candidate knows the standard vocabulary, while the job itself still goes to the candidate with relevant experience.
Is CAPM certification worth it in India?
Yes, as a first step toward the PMP, with the same caveat as in the US. Indian employers named the CAPM in 1.2% of the ads for project managers in October 2026, from a sample of 2,413 ads, and the PMP in 24% of the ads. The PMP is the credential Indian ads ask for, so the CAPM's value in India is as a route to it: the knowledge, plus the waiver of the PMP's training requirement.
PMI runs a separate India store that prices the CAPM exam in rupees, while the main store prices it in US dollars. In the India store, the CAPM exam costs about 37% of the PMP exam fee for non-members, against 46% in the US-dollar price list, and members get about 25% off in both. Check the price at checkout on pmi.org before you budget for it.
CAPM certification job opportunities: which jobs it fits
PMI lists six common paths for CAPM holders: assistant project manager, project administrator, project analyst, project coordinator, project manager and technical project manager. Several of these are support roles in a project team. The CAPM's own exam outline describes the credential the same way: it is for people "just starting" a project management career and for project team members.
Our data covers only one of those titles so far. We count the CAPM in ads for project managers, a title that suggests experienced people, which may be part of why the share is small. Our count does not include ads for project coordinators or project analysts, where an entry-level credential would fit best, so we cannot give a figure for them. For the full list of credentials that employers name in project-manager ads, by country, see which certificates project-manager ads ask for. The project management field page groups every project credential we track.
What the CAPM exam covers
The exam has 150 questions in three hours. Of those, 135 count toward your result and 15 are unscored trial questions mixed in at random. Besides standard multiple choice, PMI uses drag-and-drop matching, hot-spot questions where you click part of an image, short animations and comic strips that each lead to one question (PMI CAPM Exam Content Outline, 2023 update).
Two rules matter on exam day. There is a 10-minute break after question 75, and once you start it you cannot go back to the first half. If you take the exam online with a proctor, you see comic strips but no animations, because PMI wants to avoid sound problems.
The content is split into four domains. Fundamentals and core concepts take the largest share, at 36% of the questions. Business analysis takes 27%, agile methods 20% and predictive (plan-based) methods 17%. The business analysis share is high for a project credential, so plan study time for requirements, stakeholders and product delivery, not only schedules and budgets. Agile, 20% of the exam, is also a skill the ads name. In US project-manager ads, agile is named in 12% of the ads, Jira in 5.2% and the CAPM in 1.7% (October 2026, Adzuna). Our reading: for a junior candidate, real agile practice and tool experience on a resume match more ads than the credential does.
If agile is the part you want to go deeper on, the PMI-ACP agile certification is PMI's credential for that, and our CAPM vs PMI-ACP page explains who needs which.
You get the result as pass or fail on screen when you finish. PMI does not publish a passing score in the CAPM handbook. It gives no study-time estimate either, and the Reddit posts we collected include fewer than 10 first-person reports of CAPM study time, too few to give a range.

How much does the CAPM cost?
These are the prices in PMI's main online store, which we read on October 3, 2026.
| Item | PMI member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| CAPM exam | $225 | $300 |

Source: PMI online store (pmi.org), read October 3, 2026; renewal fee from PMI's CAPM renewal FAQ; rescheduling fee from PMI's CAPM handbook (May 2022). Analysis: CertWorthIt.
For the CAPM, joining PMI does not pay for itself on the exam fee alone. A new member pays $139 for membership, $10 to join and $225 for the exam, which comes to $374, against $300 without membership. With one retake, the totals are $524 as a member and $500 as a non-member. Membership makes sense only if you will use what else it includes; PMI gives members the PMBOK Guide for free and says members get savings on its exam prep. If you do join, wait until PMI confirms your membership before you pay for the exam. PMI charges the non-member price otherwise and does not refund the difference. Membership also cuts the renewal fee from $150 to $60, a saving of $90, less than the $139 a year that membership costs.
The cheapest route is to skip membership, pay $300 and pick any 23-hour course that PMI accepts.
The other cost is the 23 hours of project management education. PMI sells its own on-demand course, but it is not the only option. PMI accepts hours from training companies, employers, universities, PMI chapters and distance-learning providers, as long as a distance-learning course ends with an assessment (CAPM Exam Content Outline). The hours must be finished before your exam.

What the CAPM costs outside the US
PMI has only three online price lists: US dollars, Brazilian reais and Indian rupees. Buyers in Brazil and India see local prices. When we checked the store for the US, the UK, Mexico and five EU countries, all of them got the US dollar price. A poster in Sri Lanka asked on Reddit what the whole route costs in Sri Lankan rupees; PMI has no Sri Lankan price list, so expect the exam at $300, or $225 for members, in US dollars. Courses run by PMI chapters count toward the 23 hours. Chapter membership fees are set by each chapter and are not in our sources, so we cannot say whether joining as a student pays off.
How long does CAPM certification last?
A CAPM lasts three years. To keep it for another three, you earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) during the cycle and pay the renewal fee: $60 for PMI members, $150 for non-members. One PDU is one hour spent learning, teaching, presenting, reading, volunteering or creating content (PMI).
This rule dates from October 1, 2020. Before that, CAPM holders had to pass a three-hour exam again to stay certified. PMI's renewal FAQ says the change made renewal easier and cheaper.
If you later earn the PMP, the two credentials share their units. PMI's FAQ says 60 PDUs maintain both the PMP and the CAPM, so you do not need 15 extra units; you still pay the CAPM renewal fee.
Is the PMP harder than the CAPM?
The PMP asks more of you, and the difference starts before the exam. It requires two to five years of leading projects, depending on your education: three years with a bachelor's degree. The CAPM requires none. The PMP exam is also longer: 180 questions in 240 minutes, against 150 questions in 180 minutes for the CAPM.
The fee gap is large too: $655 for a non-member PMP exam against $300 for the CAPM, at PMI's main store prices. An active CAPM covers the PMP's 35-hour training requirement, so the CAPM course hours are not wasted if you move up later. Our comparison of the CAPM and the PMP works through when to take which, and the PMP certificate page covers the senior credential in full.

Does CAPM certification increase salary?
No public source measures how much pay rises after the CAPM. PMI's CAPM page says the credential can help by "increasing your earning potential" but gives no figure for that claim.
The one CAPM salary figure PMI publishes is $100,750, which its CAPM page calls the average salary of CAPM-certified project managers in the US, and for which it names Forbes as the source. Read it with care. It describes people who already hold project-manager jobs, it is an average rather than a median, and it says nothing about what a new graduate with a CAPM earns.
Our reading: for a first job, the title and the employer are likely to set your pay more than the CAPM does. A poster on Reddit asked what salary to expect with a project management degree and a CAPM. It depends on whether the job is a coordinator role or a project-manager role, and the CAPM does not decide which one you get.

CAPM certification salary in Canada and India
We have no CAPM salary figure for Canada or India from PMI or from any other source we could verify. So we give none.
What we can give is demand. In India, the CAPM is named in 1.2% of the ads for project managers (October 2026). Our ad count does not cover Canada, so there is no Canadian share either; the closest comparison is the US share, 1.7%.
Who the CAPM is for, and who should skip it
The CAPM fits these readers:
- You are a student or an intern and want a first credential while you have no project experience. PMI lists it as needing no experience.
- You work as a project coordinator or team member and want to learn the standard vocabulary and methods, including the business analysis that the exam weights at 27%.
- You plan to apply for the PMP later and want the training hours covered early. The CAPM lasts three years and the PMP needs 36 months of leading projects with a bachelor's degree (24 with a degree from a PMI-accredited program). So you will likely renew the CAPM once (15 PDUs plus $60 or $150) to keep the waiver.
Skip it, or put it second, in these cases:
- You have led projects for three years or more. The PMP is the credential employers name.
- You want UK jobs. PRINCE2 appears in 14% of the ads for UK project managers, while the CAPM appears in 8 of the 6,205. The APM PMQ is another UK option to compare.
- You would be buying it instead of building practical skills. Some posters on Reddit ask whether certificates count more than skills; the ad counts in the exam section favor agile practice.
Alternatives to the CAPM
Several credentials compete for the same beginner. Here is how often US project-manager ads named each one in October 2026 (Adzuna):
- PMP: 24%. PMI's senior credential, which needs experience first.
- CAPM: 1.7%.
- PMI-ACP: 1.1%. PMI's agile credential; see the PMI-ACP page.
- Google Project Management Certificate: 19 of the 59,273 ads. Google's own course certificate, not a PMI certification; see the Google Project Management Certificate page and our Google certificate vs CAPM comparison.
For UK jobs, the PRINCE2 certificate page covers its levels and costs.
Is CAPM certification worth it? What people ask on Reddit
We grouped the CAPM questions in our Reddit harvest (r/pmp, r/PMCareers, r/projectmanagement and r/scrum) by theme. Reddit is a self-selected sample, so these are the questions people bring, not a measure of opinion. The answers are on this page.
- Whether it is worth it at all. This is the question asked most often, in almost the same words, across three subreddits in September and October 2026 (r/pmp, r/PMCareers, r/projectmanagement). The job-ad section above gives our answer.
- CAPM now or wait for the PMP. Some posters are not eligible for the PMP yet and ask whether the CAPM is worth it in the meantime (r/projectmanagement). Others ask how long the move from CAPM to PMP took (r/pmp); our page on going from the CAPM to the PMP covers that route.
- The cheapest way in. An intern project manager in Sri Lanka asked for the cheapest route to the CAPM or the CSPO. The same post asked whether Udemy or LinkedIn Learning courses count for the 23 hours, and whether to join a local PMI chapter as a student (r/PMCareers).
- Certificates against skills. Posters ask whether hiring managers value the CAPM, CSM, PRINCE2 or PMP, and whether certification or practical experience got people their first role (r/scrum; r/PMCareers).
- Salary. A graduate with a project management degree and a CAPM asked what pay to expect (r/PMCareers).
How to get the CAPM, step by step
- Check eligibility. You need a secondary-school diploma (or a GED or equivalent), you must be at least 18, and you need 23 hours of project management education before the exam.
- Complete the 23 hours. Choose a course that states its contact hours; if it is a distance-learning course, it must end with an assessment.
- Apply on pmi.org. Once started, an application stays open for 90 days. PMI says it processes applications within 24 hours, unless yours is picked for a random audit. In an audit you have 90 days to send proof of your diploma and course hours, and the review takes about five to seven business days.
- Decide on membership, then pay. Without membership the exam costs $300. If you join for the other benefits, pay only after PMI confirms your membership.
- Schedule the exam at a test center or online, in one of 11 languages. You have one year from approval to pass, with up to three attempts. Moving or canceling an appointment within 30 days of the date costs $70.
- After you pass, start logging PDUs. You need 15 within three years.

Questions people ask
Is the PMI CAPM certification worth it if employers rarely name it?
It can be, if you know what you are buying. In October 2026 the CAPM appeared in 1.7% of the ads for US project managers (Adzuna), so on its own it will rarely be the reason you get an interview. What it gives a beginner is a reason to finish at least 23 hours of structured study and a PMI credential for $225 to $300. It also covers the PMP's 35-hour training rule later, as long as it is still active. If you already lead projects, skip it and plan for the PMP.
How long does CAPM certification last?
Three years. To renew it, you earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) in that time and pay $60 as a PMI member or $150 otherwise; no new exam is needed.
Does the CAPM count toward the PMP?
Partly. PMI says an active CAPM fulfills the PMP's training requirement, which is otherwise 35 hours of project management education. It does not replace the experience rule: with a bachelor's degree you still need 36 months of leading projects before you can apply for the PMP, or 60 months with a secondary-school diploma. Keep the CAPM renewed until you apply if you want to use it this way; with the experience rule, that usually means at least one renewal.
Is it worth getting a CAPM if you are not eligible for the PMP yet?
That is the case the CAPM was built for. PMI lists it as needing no experience, and the exam costs less than half of the PMP fee ($300 against $655 for non-members). The trade-off is demand: employers name it far less often than the PMP. Take it if you will use the knowledge at work now; do not take it expecting a raise on its own. Our CAPM vs PMP page covers the timing.
Can a cheap online course cover the 23 hours for the CAPM?
Usually, yes. PMI accepts courses from training companies, employers, universities, PMI chapters and distance-learning companies, as long as a distance-learning course ends with an assessment. The hours must be finished before your exam date. Chapter meetings count only for the hours spent on a learning activity, and only if that is at least one hour. Check that the course states its contact hours and has a final test before you pay for it.
What happens if you fail the CAPM exam?
You can try again. PMI gives you up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period that starts when your application is approved. Each retake costs $150 for members or $200 for non-members. If you fail three times, you wait one year from your last attempt before you can apply again, though you may apply for other PMI certifications in the meantime.
Can you take the CAPM exam online?
Yes. PMI offers the CAPM at test centers and as an online exam watched by a proctor. Online candidates get comic-strip questions but no animations, which PMI leaves out to avoid sound problems. The exam is available in 11 languages, including Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and two forms of Chinese.
