Which online course for career change do job ads name?
Choose the job, then the online course for career change, the exam or both that its ads name. In October 2026, the phrase comptia a (our stand-in for CompTIA A+, an IT-support exam) appeared in 551 of the 2,745 US IT-support ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Google's course name google it support appeared in 3 US IT-support ads in October 2026.
Start here: if you have no target job yet, spend one evening on job ads before you pay for anything; the steps are in What should you do first?. If you have no degree, make IT support one of the jobs you check: it is the only job on this page where the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes an entry route without a degree.
Our job-ad counts come from Adzuna. Pay and education levels come from the BLS, exam and course prices from each vendor's own page, and retraining rules from the US Department of Labor (DOL).
This page covers five jobs in IT, project management and data: IT support, SOC analyst (security monitoring), project manager, data analyst and Scrum master (team coach). It does not cover trades, healthcare or other fields.

What is the difference between a course certificate and a certification?
A course certificate shows you finished an online course; a certification shows you passed an exam set by an industry body or a vendor. Both are sold as career-change credentials, and job ads treat them as different things.
| Type | Who issues it | How you earn it | Example on this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online course certificate | A company, through a course platform such as Coursera | Finish the courses; no proctored exam (an exam watched by a supervisor) | Google IT Support Certificate |
| Exam-based certification | An industry body such as CompTIA (an IT industry body), PMI (the Project Management Institute), ISC2 (a cybersecurity membership body) or Scrum Alliance | Pass the body's exam and meet its conditions | CompTIA A+ |
| Degree | A college or university | Complete an academic program over several years | Associate degree (the two-year degree below a bachelor's) |
What each credential type means. Source: CertWorthIt, from the Coursera, CompTIA, PMI, ISC2 and Scrum Alliance pages listed under Sources.
Google's career certificates are online training programs that Google runs on Coursera. Coursera's pages for the four we cover say no experience is required (three of them also say no degree), and none of the four ends in a proctored exam. Our certificate vs degree guide covers degree routes and their costs.
Which career change options can start without a degree?
Of the five US occupations we checked, computer support is the one where the BLS describes an entry route without a degree. Those five occupations match four of our five jobs; Scrum master has no match. For computer support, the BLS says candidates "may qualify with a high school diploma plus relevant information technology (IT) certifications." For the other four, the BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education.
| Job (our page) | Nearest BLS occupation | Typical entry-level education (BLS) | BLS median pay, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT support (help desk: fixes staff computers and accounts) | Computer support specialists | No single level: associate degree for network support, some college courses for user support, or high school plus IT certifications | $62,890 |
| SOC analyst (works in a security operations center, the team that watches company systems for attacks) | Information security analysts | Bachelor's degree, plus less than 5 years of related work | $129,180 |
| Project manager (plans and runs projects) | Project management specialists | Bachelor's degree | $102,320 |
| Data analyst (turns business data into answers) | Data scientists (the Occupational Outlook Handbook has no data analyst page) | Bachelor's degree | $120,230 |
| Data analyst, second match | Operations research analysts | Bachelor's degree | $88,940 |
Career change options and their typical entry route, by BLS occupation. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook pages listed under Sources, read October 7, 2026. The median is the middle value: half of workers earn more, half earn less. It covers all workers in the occupation, so it is not starting pay.
The typical education level is the BLS's description of how people enter the job, not a legal rule; an employer can hire outside it. For computer support, the BLS also projects a decline in jobs. Its page says employment "is projected to decline 3 percent from 2025 to 2035."
Which career change certificate programs do job ads name?
The credentials we counted in US job ads are exam-based certifications (CompTIA A+, CompTIA Security+, ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity, the CAPM and Certified ScrumMaster) and Google course certificates. For each one, the table gives the number of US ads on Adzuna in October 2026 that contain the phrase we searched.

Career change certificate programs and exam certifications in US job ads. Source: Adzuna API, US job ads collected in October 2026, matched by phrase. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.
An ad that names a credential may list it as required or only as preferred; our count does not tell the two apart. The A+ and Security+ phrases are approximate: an ad that writes only "A+" or "Security+" is missed, and comptia a can also match other CompTIA wording.
In October 2026, the phrase google cybersecurity appeared in none of the 233 US SOC-analyst ads on Adzuna. For project managers, the phrase google project management appeared in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads in October 2026, and capm appeared in 982 of those ads.
Which career change courses fit each job?
For four of the five jobs we list a Google course certificate, and for four we list an exam-based certification. Scrum master has no Google course (the CSM exam comes with a required class), and data analyst has no exam we counted. You buy the course and the exam separately, except for the CSM. We quote each vendor's entry conditions below, because some exams that look entry-level recommend years of experience.
IT support
The Google IT Support Certificate is a 6-course series. Coursera estimates 3 months at 10 hours a week and says "No prior experience required." The exam route is CompTIA A+, which needs two exams, Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202). Each has a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes. CompTIA requires no experience and recommends "12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support specialist job role." Our IT-support page lists the skills the same ads name.
SOC analyst and security
The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is a 9-course series. Coursera estimates 6 months at 7 hours a week and says "No degree or experience required." ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) is labeled "Entry-Level No Work Experience Required" on ISC2's page, and the exam costs $199. Its free-exam offer closed to new enrollments on May 20, 2026, though anyone holding an unexpired exam code can use it until December 31, 2026.
CompTIA Security+ costs $439, and CompTIA recommends "CompTIA Network+ and two years of experience working in a security/ systems administrator job role." Network+ is CompTIA's networking exam. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree plus related work experience for information security analysts. Our reading: for a career changer, security tends to come after a first IT job. Our cybersecurity roadmap sets out the order of the exams, and the SOC-analyst page covers the job itself.
Project management
The Google Project Management Certificate is a 7-course series estimated to take 6 months at 10 hours a week, with no degree or experience required. The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI's entry-level exam. PMI asks for a secondary diploma (finished high school or the global equivalent). It also asks for "23 contact hours of formal education" in project management, where a contact hour is an hour of instruction. We did not check whether the Google course counts toward those 23 hours; ask PMI before you assume it does. The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions, taken at a test center or online with a supervisor watching. Our project-manager page shows what US project-manager ads name.
Data analyst
The Google Data Analytics Certificate is a 9-course series. Coursera estimates 6 months at 10 hours a week, with "no degree or experience required." We count no exam certification for data-analyst ads, so the course is the only credential we list for this job. Our data-analyst page lists the skills those ads name, such as SQL (a language for querying databases).
Scrum master
A Scrum master runs the routines of a team that works in short cycles under Scrum, a team method. The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance requires a course of "16 hours of training (with most classes spanning 2-3 days)," which includes the exam: 50 multiple-choice questions. The course costs $250 to $2,495, depending on the trainer, region and format. Our Scrum-master page covers the job.
How much does a career change course cost, and how long does it take?
The Google Data Analytics, Cybersecurity and Project Management certificates each cost $294 if you finish in 6 months at Coursera's $49 a month, and the CompTIA, ISC2 and PMI exams below add $199 to $548. The sums below use vendor list prices checked on October 3, 2026, and they leave out costs after the exam. The CompTIA, ISC2, PMI and Scrum Alliance certifications on this page must be renewed on a fixed cycle; renewal costs are on our page for each certification.
| Item | Price (vendor) | Sum | Study time or exam length (vendor) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Data Analytics | $49 a month on Coursera | $49 × 6 = $294 | 6 months at 10 hours a week |
| Google Project Management | $49 a month on Coursera | $49 × 6 = $294 | 6 months at 10 hours a week |
| Google Cybersecurity | $49 a month on Coursera | $49 × 6 = $294 | 6 months at 7 hours a week |
| Google IT Support | Shown at sign-up; we could not confirm it on the course page | Check before you start | 3 months at 10 hours a week |
| CompTIA A+ (two exams) | $274 per exam | $274 × 2 = $548 | Exam: 90 minutes each |
| CompTIA Security+ | $439 | $439 | Exam: 90 minutes |
| ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity | $199 | $199 | Not stated on the pages we checked |
| CAPM | $300 (non-member); $225 for PMI members, who pay a separate membership fee | $300 | Exam: 180 minutes |
| Certified ScrumMaster | $250 to $2,495, course and exam | $250 to $2,495 | 16 hours of training |
Source: Coursera, CompTIA, ISC2, PMI and Scrum Alliance pages, checked October 3, 2026; sums by CertWorthIt. Coursera's $49 is its US and Canada price after a 7-day free trial.
For a course plus the exam we list next to it, the totals are $294 + $439 = $733 for Google Cybersecurity with Security+, $294 + $199 = $493 with ISC2 CC, and $294 + $300 = $594 for Google Project Management with the CAPM. Coursera bills by the month, so finishing sooner costs less and finishing later costs more. Each total covers one person's path; do not add rows together. Security+ is included because we pair it with the Google course, but CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years of experience first (see SOC analyst and security).
Can you get a career change course paid for?
You may be able to, through WIOA (the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, a US federal law), but funding depends on your state and your situation. The DOL says WIOA "is designed to help job seekers access employment, education, training, and support services to succeed in the labor market."
WIOA services run through American Job Centers, local public offices that help people look for work and find training. CareerOneStop, a site sponsored by the DOL, says there are nearly 2,300 of them and has a finder for the nearest one. The DOL says services "may vary from state to state" and that "some services have eligibility requirements," so ask your local center before you count on any money.
Two WIOA programs may apply to career changers. In the DOL's words, the Adult program gives "job search assistance and training opportunities" to adults. When centers use Adult program money for individualized career services and training services, they must give priority to "recipients of public assistance, other low-income individuals, and individuals who are basic skills deficient," the DOL says. The last group means people with weak basic reading, writing or math skills. Veterans get priority in every DOL-funded employment program. The Dislocated Worker program serves people who lost work through "job loss, mass layoffs, global trade dynamics, or transitions in economic sectors."
Training is paid through an Individual Training Account (ITA). The DOL describes it as a payment agreement that a local workforce development board (the local body that runs WIOA services) sets up with a training provider for you. The program must be on your state's eligible training provider list (the state's list of approved training programs), which the DOL publishes on CareerOneStop, so check whether the course you want is listed before you pay for it yourself.
What do Reddit posters say about courses and certifications?
Three comments, one about a course certificate and two about exams, show how posters weigh them. They are opinions from people who chose to post, not a measure of how employers hire.
- In a thread about which Coursera course leads to better pay, one poster wrote: "The cert gets you in the door. How you frame your experience is what pushes you past $18/hr" (r/coursera).
- In r/ITCareerQuestions, a poster said you "should be able to find Helpdesk without a degree" and added that CompTIA A+ or Network+ helps (r/ITCareerQuestions).
- A reply in the same thread was more doubtful: "don't expect that A+ to really help" (r/ITCareerQuestions).
What should you do first?
Spend one evening on job ads before you pay for a course. These steps work whether or not you have a target job.
- If you have no target job, pick two of the five jobs in the job-ad section. If you have no degree, make IT support one of them: it is the only job on this page where the BLS describes an entry route without a degree. With a target job in mind, pick it and one related job.
- Search each job title plus your city on a job site and save 10 ads per job. For each ad, note the credentials it names and whether it asks for a degree.
- Choose the job whose ads name skills that appear in the course's skills list on its Coursera or vendor page, then pick the course, the exam or both for it from the course section. Read the vendor's entry conditions before you buy.
- Before you pay, use CareerOneStop's American Job Center finder and ask the nearest center whether you qualify for WIOA training money and whether your course is on the state list.
If neither job appeals after 20 ads, you have spent nothing. Our career guides cover other routes.

Questions people ask
Which course is best for career change?
The best fit is the course, the exam or both that US job ads name for the job you want (a mention in an ad is not a requirement); one course does not fit every career change. In October 2026, the phrase 'comptia a', our stand-in search for CompTIA A+ (an entry-level IT-support certification from CompTIA, an IT industry body), appeared in 551 of the 2,745 US IT-support ads we counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. The phrase 'google it support', the name of Google's IT Support course certificate on Coursera (an online course platform), appeared in 3 of the same ads. Our IT-support page lists the skills those ads name.
What are some good courses for career change?
We list three Google course certificates on Coursera (an online course platform) next to an exam for the same job (our pairing, not Google's). Google IT Support takes 3 months at 10 hours a week, by Coursera's estimate; we list it next to CompTIA A+, an IT-support certification from CompTIA, an IT industry body (two exams at $274 each, $548 in total). Google Cybersecurity takes 6 months at 7 hours a week. We list it next to CompTIA Security+, a security exam ($439), and Certified in Cybersecurity from ISC2, a cybersecurity membership body ($199). For Security+, CompTIA recommends Network+, its networking exam, and two years of experience in a security or systems administrator job. Google Project Management takes 6 months at 10 hours a week; we list it next to the CAPM, the entry-level project-management exam from PMI (the Project Management Institute), at $300 for non-members. We checked prices on the vendors' US pages on October 3, 2026. The Google certificates have no proctored exam (an exam watched by a supervisor). In October 2026, the phrase 'capm' appeared in 982 of the 59,273 US project-manager job ads counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.
What certifications can I get to change careers?
Four certifications we checked ask for no work experience as a condition. CompTIA A+ (IT support) requires none; CompTIA, an IT industry body, recommends 12 months in an IT support role. Certified in Cybersecurity from ISC2, a cybersecurity membership body, says 'No Work Experience Required.' The CAPM from PMI (the Project Management Institute) asks for a secondary diploma (finished high school or the global equivalent) and 23 contact hours (hours of instruction) of project-management education. The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance, a credential for people who run a team under Scrum (a team method that works in short cycles), requires 16 hours of training. In October 2026, the phrase 'certified scrum master' appeared in 22% of the ads for US Scrum-master jobs we counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.
How do you make $10,000 a month with no degree?
Among the five US occupations we checked in the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, none has both a median pay of $10,000 a month or more and a typical entry route that needs no degree. Twelve months at $10,000 is $120,000 a year. Two of the five had a median annual pay (the middle value: half earn more, half less) at or above $120,000 in May 2025: information security analysts ($129,180) and data scientists ($120,230). For both, the BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education; that is the usual entry route, not a legal rule, so an employer can hire outside it. A median covers all workers in the job, so it is not starting pay. Our certificate vs degree guide covers degree routes and their costs.
What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?
None of the five US occupations we checked in figures from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) pairs a median pay (the middle value) of $10,000 a month with a typical entry path that skips a degree. That monthly figure equals $120,000 a year. Computer support specialists, the only one of the five where the BLS says high school graduates with relevant IT certifications may qualify, had a median of $62,890 a year in May 2025. The BLS describes the typical entry route, not a legal rule. This answer covers only those five occupations, not every US job.
