HR certifications: what 36,509 US HR job ads name
Of the HR certifications US job ads name, the SHRM-CP, from the Society for Human Resource Management, is the one whose published rules ask for no degree or HR experience. Its next exam window runs December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027. In October 2026, shrm-cp appeared in 1,066 of the 36,509 US hr job ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.
In the UK, the name to know is the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development), which awards course-based qualifications rather than one exam. Your first step, even with no HR job yet: open ten HR job ads where you want to work and note which credential each one names. Take the SHRM-CP only if the ads near you name it. If they name CIPD, ask a CIPD course provider which level its entry rules let you start at. If they name none, keep the exam fee and apply for entry-level HR jobs. In India, our ad counts are small, so check ten Indian ads the same way, and read the exam page of SHRM or HRCI for test-center countries before you pay.

What is the best HR certification?
The best HR certification is one whose entry rules you already meet, from the body that HR ads in your country name. Which certification is best for HR work depends on your branch: talent development, meaning staff training, has its own credential.
Terms in the table: the PHR is the Professional in Human Resources. SHRM-CP (Certified Professional) covers operational HR work (day-to-day tasks), SHRM-SCP strategic work (planning and policy). HRCI, the HR Certification Institute, issues the aPHR (Associate Professional in Human Resources, its entry credential) and the PHR, among others. "Professional-level" is HRCI's term for the HR role you count toward the PHR. CIPD levels follow the RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework), the scale England and Northern Ireland use to rank qualifications by difficulty. The Association for Talent Development (ATD) awards the CPTD (Certified Professional in Talent Development) and the APTD, its entry credential.
| Your situation | Credential | Entry rule, in the issuer's words where quoted |
|---|---|---|
| No HR job or degree yet, US | SHRM-CP | Candidates "do not need a degree or previous HR experience to apply" |
| Want an HRCI entry credential | aPHR | Rules not checked: read HRCI's aPHR page for any experience or education rule before you pay $400 |
| One to four years in a professional-level HR role | PHR | "at least one year of experience in a professional-level HR role, plus a master's degree or higher"; two years with a bachelor's degree; or four years |
| Three or more years of strategic HR work | SHRM-SCP | "at least three years performing strategic-level HR/HR-related duties," or three years holding the SHRM-CP |
| UK, starting out | CIPD Foundation (RQF Level 3) or Associate Diploma (RQF Level 5) | Courses that typically take 8 to 12 months (Foundation) or 12 to 16 months (Associate); entry rules not checked, so ask the provider |
| UK, experienced | CIPD Advanced Diploma (comparable to RQF Level 7) | "for experienced people professionals" (CIPD's term for HR staff); typically 16 to 24 months |
| Five or more years in staff training | CPTD | "at least five (5) years of experience in talent development" plus 60 hours of professional development, or four years plus a current APTD |

A beginner should not budget for the SHRM-SCP, the PHR or the CPTD first, because each one asks for HR or training work before you can take it.
Which HR certifications do job ads name?
We counted five credential phrases in job ads containing the word hr on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in the US, the UK and India in October 2026. Each cell shows the count out of the total number of ads, so a zero reads as "none of" that country's ads.

Source: Adzuna job-ad data, ads returned for the search word hr, collected in October 2026. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.
Each count is for the phrase, not for every ad that wants the credential. For the PHR we searched its full name, so ads that write only "PHR" are left out, and the phrase sits inside the full names of HRCI's other credentials, so the count is not the PHR alone. The phrase cipd matches any mention of the institute. No row says whether an ad requires the credential or only prefers it.
The UK and Indian counts are a small sample, so read them with care. We did not count the aPHR or the APTD.
What is the best HR certification for beginners?
The best HR certification for beginners is one whose rules ask for no experience and that ads near you name: in the US, the SHRM-CP; in the UK, a CIPD Foundation or Associate course, whichever its provider says your entry rules allow. Neither replaces HR work, which the PHR and the SHRM-SCP count toward their entry rules.
Which entry-level HR certification fits if you have no HR job yet?
The SHRM-CP is an entry-level HR certification whose published rules ask for no experience. SHRM runs two exam windows a year (set dates when you can sit it); the next runs December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027. The exam has 134 multiple-choice questions, 54 of them situational judgment items (short workplace scenarios where you pick the best action). You get 3 hours 40 minutes at a Prometric test center (a company that runs exam rooms), in English, Arabic or Korean. A pass shows as 200 on SHRM's score scale of 120 to 200. SHRM reported a 68% pass rate for the May to July 2025 window. After a fail, you cannot retest in the same window.
The aPHR costs $400 ($300 exam + $100 application). Its exam has 65 scored and 25 pretest questions (unscored trial questions) in 1 hour 45 minutes, at a Pearson VUE test center or online through OnVUE, where a proctor (a remote supervisor) watches you by webcam.
What do HR certifications cost, renewals included?
A first US HR exam costs $400 to $499 at standard list prices: $400 for the aPHR, $495 for the PHR and $499 for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. The CPTD costs $1,500. Each must be renewed every three years with credits (proof of approved learning, such as courses and webinars) or a retake. Prices are for non-members; SHRM and ATD members pay less.
| Credential | First attempt, non-member | Valid for | How to renew | First pass plus one renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP | $499 standard; $450 early bird (applying early in a window) | Three years | 60 PDCs (professional development credits) and a $210 fee, or a retake | $499 + $210 = $709 |
| PHR | $495 ($395 exam + $100 application) | Three years | 60 credits, or a retake | Not known: HRCI renewal fee not checked |
| aPHR | $400 ($300 exam + $100 application) | Three years | 45 credits, or a retake | Not known, as for the PHR |
| CPTD | $1,500 ($999 for ATD members) | Three years | 60 recertification points and a $250 fee | $1,500 + $250 = $1,750 |
Totals cover three years and leave out the cost of earning credits, study material and retakes. Source: SHRM, HRCI and ATD pages (see Sources).
SHRM members pay $399 standard or $350 early bird and renew for $165; late renewal costs non-members $285. SHRM publishes no separate retake price; the handbook says you apply for a later window. The CPTD retest fee is $350.

Are CIPD courses the best HR certification programs for UK readers?
For UK readers, CIPD courses are the HR certification programs to look at first: they carry RQF levels and lead to CIPD membership grades. In October 2026, the phrase cipd appeared in 102 of the 280 UK job ads in Adzuna's hr search, against 14 of the 280 for the PHR's full name.
CIPD qualifications are assessed courses taught by training providers, not one exam. CIPD's UK price ranges are £1,300 to £2,300 for Foundation, £1,600 to £3,600 for the Associate Diploma and £3,000 to £7,000 for the Advanced Diploma; fees vary by provider. Finishing the Associate Diploma makes you an Associate Member (letters Assoc CIPD), at £199 a year from July 1, 2026, plus a one-off £40 joining fee; membership years run July to June.
If you join as an Associate after finishing, the UK course plus one year of membership comes to £1,600 + £40 + £199 = £1,839 at the low end and £3,600 + £40 + £199 = £3,839 at the high end. The course itself takes 12 to 16 months and may span two membership years.
Is an HR certification worth it?
An HR certification is worth it when the HR ads you want to answer name it, or when your employer pays the fee. Our data cannot show whether holders are hired sooner or paid more, because we count phrases in ads, not hires or pay.
Which HR certifications are worth getting at each stage?
With no HR job yet: the SHRM-CP, if ads near you name it. Once your HR work meets HRCI's rule for your degree: the PHR. With three years of strategic work: the SHRM-SCP. In staff training: the CPTD from year five, or year four with the APTD. Each then needs credits every three years: 60 for the SHRM exams, the PHR and the CPTD, 45 for the aPHR.
Do you need a certification for HR?
For HR specialists in the US, certification is "usually voluntary," says the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency. It adds that "some employers prefer or require it." HR specialists, the BLS says, "typically need a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or a related field." In October 2026, 2.9% of the ads in Adzuna's US search for hr named the phrase shrm-cp; an ad can ask for certification in other words.

SHRM or HRCI: which is better, and is SHRM or PHR harder?
The better body depends on where you stand, and we cannot say which exam is harder. The SHRM-CP has no experience rule while the PHR asks for HR work first, and the HRCI pages we read give no PHR pass rate. Of the 36,509 US job ads returned for hr on Adzuna in October 2026, 1,066 contained shrm-cp and 162 contained the PHR's full name.

Neither body publishes a fixed passing score. Both set it with a version of the Angoff method, a statistical method HRCI says it uses "to decide how many questions you must answer correctly to pass the exam." Of these two, a beginner can take only the SHRM-CP.

Are HR certifications worth it, according to Reddit posters?
Posters disagree: one holder wrote that their certificate "adds zero value to my life or career" (comment), another that theirs "was a factor with getting my job" (comment). Reddit is a discussion site, and r/humanresources is a forum on it; posters are self-selected, so these threads on the best certifications for HR professionals show what people say, not how many agree.
- A medical-office administrator moving into HR asked whether the aPHR or the SHRM-CP would help land an entry-level job (r/humanresources, October 2026). We did not check the aPHR's entry rules; the SHRM-CP has a published no-experience rule.
- A poster torn between SHRM and HRCI wrote that earlier threads had painted SHRM as a "money-grab" (a scheme to take money; August 2026). Compare the entry rules, then the ads near you.
- A new SHRM-CP holder asked how to earn PDCs before the three-year deadline (September 2026). Renewal takes 60 PDCs plus the $210 fee, or a retake.
- A poster asked which HR certifications are worth it in India (October 2026). Check ten Indian ads, because our Indian counts are small.

Questions people ask
What is the best HR certification to get?
The best HR certification to get is one whose entry rules you meet and that HR job ads in your country name. In the US, the SHRM-CP, an exam from the Society for Human Resource Management (an HR membership body), asks for no degree or HR experience. The PHR (Professional in Human Resources, from the HR Certification Institute) asks for one to four years in a professional-level HR role (HRCI's term), depending on your degree. In October 2026, the phrase shrm-cp appeared in 1,066 of the 36,509 US job ads containing the word hr on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. In the UK, look first at the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development), whose courses carry UK qualification levels and lead to CIPD membership.
Is HRCI or SHRM better?
HRCI (the HR Certification Institute) and SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) each fit a different reader. SHRM's first exam, the SHRM-CP, asks for no degree or HR experience. HRCI's PHR (Professional in Human Resources) asks for HR work in a professional-level role (HRCI's term): one year with a master's degree, two with a bachelor's, four otherwise. Both stay valid for three years and renew with 60 credits earned through approved learning, or a retake. Of the 36,509 US job ads that Adzuna, a job-ad search site, returned for hr in October 2026, 1,066 contained shrm-cp and 162 contained professional in human resources, the PHR's full name. That phrase sits inside the full names of other HRCI credentials, and ads that write only PHR are not in the count.
Is getting an HR certificate worth it?
Getting an HR certificate is worth it when the job ads you want to answer name it, or when your employer pays the fee. A first US exam costs $400 to $499 at standard list prices. That covers the aPHR (HRCI's entry credential) and the PHR (Professional in Human Resources) from HRCI, the HR Certification Institute, and the SHRM-CP from the Society for Human Resource Management. Each one must be renewed every three years by earning credits through approved learning, or by retaking the exam. In October 2026, 2.9% of the ads returned for hr in US searches on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, contained the phrase shrm-cp. We count phrases in ads, not hires or pay, so we cannot say whether holders earn more.
Is SHRM or PHR harder?
We cannot say whether the SHRM exams or the PHR (Professional in Human Resources) is harder: we found no pass rate from HRCI, the PHR's issuer, on the pages we read. SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, reported pass rates of 68% for the SHRM-CP and 50% for the SHRM-SCP, its senior exam, in its May to July 2025 exam window. The formats differ. The SHRM exams have 134 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours 40 minutes, part of them scenario questions. The PHR has 90 scored questions plus 25 pretest questions (unscored trial questions) in 2 hours. The PHR asks for HR work experience before you can take it; the SHRM-CP asks for none.
Do you need a certification for HR?
For HR work in the US, a certification is usually optional: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, says certification for HR specialists is usually voluntary, though some employers prefer or require it. The BLS says HR specialists typically need a bachelor's degree in human resources, business or a related field. In October 2026, 2.9% of the ads in a US Adzuna search for hr (Adzuna is a job-ad search site) named shrm-cp, the first exam from the Society for Human Resource Management.
Which HR certification is best in the UK?
In the UK, the HR qualifications to look at first are those of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). They are courses, not single exams: Foundation (RQF Level 3; the RQF is the scale England and Northern Ireland use to rank qualifications), Associate Diploma (Level 5) and Advanced Diploma (comparable to Level 7). In October 2026, the phrase cipd appeared in 102 of the 280 UK job ads in an Adzuna search for hr (Adzuna is a job-ad search site); that is a small sample, so read it with care. CIPD says an Associate Diploma typically costs £1,600 to £3,600 in the UK.
