Six Sigma Green Belt vs Black Belt: which should you take first?
The Six Sigma Green Belt vs Black Belt choice turns on your project record: start with Green Belt unless you can document a completed Six Sigma project, which ASQ's Black Belt requires. In US project-manager ads from October 2026 on Adzuna, a job-ad site, six sigma green belt appeared in 364 of the 59,273 ads and six sigma black belt in 58 of the 59,273 ads.
Six Sigma is a set of methods for finding and removing the causes of errors in a work process, and no single body owns it. "ASQ is one of several organizations that certify Six Sigma belts," says the ASQ careers site. ASQ (the American Society for Quality) and IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) each run their own Green Belt and Black Belt exams, and other organizations issue belts of their own. There is no single standard, so a belt name means what its issuer says it means.

Which belt should you take first?
Take Green Belt first if you have not yet led a Six Sigma project you can document; go straight to Black Belt if you have and meet the experience rule below. A Six Sigma Green Belt, in ASQ's words, helps with data collection and analysis on Black Belt projects and leads Green Belt projects or teams; IASSC's Green Belt page says the role is typically part time. A Six Sigma Black Belt "leads problem-solving projects" and coaches project teams (ASQ); IASSC's Black Belt page says it leads complex improvement projects, typically full time.
- No Six Sigma project behind you yet: take a Green Belt. ASQ's version (Certified Six Sigma Green Belt, CSSGB) still asks for three years of full-time, paid work in areas on its exam topic list, and a degree does not shorten that. IASSC's Green Belt (ICGB) has no prerequisites.
- Three years of full-time, paid work in the Black Belt topics plus one documented Six Sigma project, or two such projects: go straight to Black Belt. ASQ's Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) wants a signed affidavit, a signed statement confirming each project.
- You want the Black Belt exam without a project: IASSC's Black Belt (ICBB) has no prerequisites, so you can take it. Passing it shows you know the material; it does not show you have led a project, and ASQ's Black Belt asks for exactly that.
- No target job yet: start with the topics, not a course. Download ASQ's Green Belt Body of Knowledge, its official exam topic list, and check which of the five DMAIC steps (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control, the cycle Six Sigma projects follow) you have already used at work.
Your first step in every case: open ten ads for the jobs you want and note which belt they name and whether they name ASQ, IASSC or another issuer. If none names a belt, you may not need either. Our pages on the Green Belt and the Black Belt cover each belt on its own.
How often do US job ads name each belt?
In October 2026, the exact phrase six sigma green belt appeared in 364 of the 59,273 ads for US project managers, and the phrase six sigma black belt in 58 of the 59,273 ads (Adzuna). Both counts come from the same set of ads, so they can be read side by side. In these ads the Green Belt phrase has the larger count, which fits the advice to take it first.
We search Adzuna, a job-ad search site, for each job title plus the exact phrase in quotation marks. An ad that names both belts counts in both columns, and an ad saying Lean Six Sigma Green Belt contains the phrase and counts, whatever issuer it means. Ads that say only Six Sigma, only Green Belt or Black Belt, or an abbreviation such as CSSBB are not counted. The method is on our methodology page.
| US job title | Ads counted | With six sigma green belt |

|---|---|---|---|
| project manager | 59,273 | 364 | 58 |
| program manager | 30,691 | not tracked for this title | 59 |
| business analyst | 13,543 | 14 | not tracked for this title |

We track Black Belt against program-manager ads (a program manager runs a group of related projects) and Green Belt against business-analyst ads, so each of those rows has its own base. The phrase six sigma black belt appeared in 59 of the 30,691 ads for US program managers in October 2026 (Adzuna). For what else employers name in these jobs, see our pages on the project-manager role and the business-analyst role.
Outside the US, we also counted UK and Indian ads. In October 2026, six sigma green belt appeared in 6 of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads and six sigma black belt in one of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads (Adzuna). In Indian project-manager ads, the green-belt phrase appeared in 2 of the 2,413 ads and the black-belt phrase in one of the 2,413 ads. With counts this small, we draw no conclusion about either country.

How do the Green Belt and Black Belt exams differ?
At both ASQ and IASSC, the Black Belt exam has more questions than the Green Belt exam, and at ASQ only the Black Belt has a project rule. The two bodies set different rules, so they get separate tables.
| ASQ | Green Belt (CSSGB) | Black Belt (CSSBB) |

The topics change as well as the length. ASQ's Black Belt Body of Knowledge puts 105 of its 150 scored questions on the five DMAIC steps. The other 45 cover organization-wide planning and deployment, process management and measures, team management, and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS, using the methods to design a new process or product). ASQ's Green Belt list covers the DMAIC steps plus lean principles and tools, which are methods for cutting waste from a process.
What does each belt cost, including renewal?
Exam fees run $483 to $585 at ASQ (nonmembers) and $350 to $450 at IASSC. ASQ totals below include renewal; IASSC totals leave out its recertification exam fee, which IASSC's recertification page does not list. Training, books and ASQ membership are extra.
| Route | ASQ, nonmember | IASSC |
|---|---|---|
| Green Belt only | $483; no renewal | $350, before renewal exam fee |
| Black Belt only | $585, plus $160 at the three-year renewal = $745 | $450, before renewal exam fee |
| Green Belt, then Black Belt | $483 + $585 = $1,068, plus $160 at the Black Belt's three-year renewal = $1,228 | $350 + $450 = $800, before renewal exam fees (not listed) |
Source: ASQ exam and recertification fees and IASSC voucher prices, checked October 5, 2026, in US dollars.
An ASQ member pays $100 less on each first attempt, so the Green-then-Black route comes to $383 plus $485, or $868, and $988 once the $120 member renewal fee is added. Compare ASQ's membership price with that discount before you join. One failed attempt adds $283 for the ASQ Green Belt or $385 for the ASQ Black Belt.
ASQ's Black Belt renewal works one of two ways. You can collect 18 recertification units (credits you earn for professional activity) over three years and submit a recertification journal, a record of those credits, for $120 (members) or $160 (nonmembers). Or you can retake the exam for $485 or $585. The ASQ route totals assume the journal route and leave out whatever it costs you to earn the units. ASQ gives a 60-day grace period (extra time to file) after the deadline and then requires the exam.
Do you need a Green Belt before a Black Belt?
No, not at ASQ or IASSC; other issuers set their own rules. ASQ's Black Belt page lists experience and signed project affidavits, not a Green Belt, and nothing on it counts a Green Belt exam toward the project rule. IASSC says there are "no prerequisites" for its Black Belt exam.
People who posted on r/SixSigma about this choice gave both answers. In a thread asking which belt to take, one reply said "I would get the green belt first" and added that Black Belt assumed you were already running projects (r/SixSigma). Another reply in the same thread said that anyone "not scared off by Black Belt topics and statistics" should go for it (r/SixSigma).
Our reading: if you can name your completed projects and get an affidavit signed for each, a Green Belt first adds an exam fee without adding to your ASQ Black Belt application, as far as ASQ's page shows. If you cannot, the Green Belt is where to start.
How hard is each exam, and what should you study?
The Black Belt exams have more questions at both bodies, and difficulty beyond that cannot be ranked, because no verified pass rate exists. ASQ's exams are open book, so you can look things up; IASSC's are closed book, so you cannot bring notes. One r/SixSigma reply named statistics as the hard part: "The tough part in black belt is the statistics" (r/SixSigma).
To study, work from the issuer's Body of Knowledge. For ASQ's Green Belt, use the topic list as a checklist and pick books from ASQ's reference list. For ASQ's Black Belt, work through its Body of Knowledge area by area, and choose references you can search quickly under time pressure. For IASSC, practice without notes; PeopleCert's IASSC Green Belt page says a reference document with formulas and tables is available on screen, so practice using it. To plan your time, mark the topic areas you have not used at work and give each a set number of weeks; at ASQ, the Black Belt also waits on your projects.
Is a Six Sigma Green Belt worth it if you might go further?
Yes, if you will use the methods on real work. The top reply to a 2026 r/SixSigma post asking whether a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt was worth it said: "You get the belt and ask your employers to put you on a project team" (r/SixSigma). The same reply suggested a volunteer project for a nonprofit if your employer has none. Our reading: the project you apply a Green Belt to is what gives it value.
IASSC puts Lean Six Sigma in its credential names and ASQ does not, yet ASQ's Green Belt topic list includes lean principles and tools. Compare topic lists, not names.
Should you put Green Belt or Black Belt in your LinkedIn headline?
Put a belt in your LinkedIn headline when process improvement is central to the work you want; otherwise list it in the certifications section only. Either way, write the exact issuer and credential (for example, "ASQ CSSGB" or "IASSC Black Belt"). A course completion certificate from a training provider is not an ASQ or IASSC certification, so describe it as what it is.
What we did not check
- Pass rates for any of the four exams, and salary figures for either belt.
- The price of ASQ membership and the fee for IASSC's recertification exams.
- Study hours, practice exams and whether ASQ's handbook is enough; Reddit posts asking this had no replies.
- Belts from other issuers, which set their own rules.
- Whether the ads we counted wanted an ASQ belt, an IASSC belt or any belt.

Questions people ask
Should I get a Six Sigma Green Belt or a Black Belt first?
Start with a Six Sigma Green Belt unless you can already document a Six Sigma project you led. ASQ (the American Society for Quality) describes a Green Belt as helping on Black Belt projects and leading Green Belt projects, and a Black Belt as leading problem-solving projects. For its Black Belt, ASQ asks for three years of full-time, paid work plus one completed project with a signed affidavit (a signed statement confirming the project), or two such projects (checked in October 2026). IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) sets no prerequisites for either belt, but passing its Black Belt exam is not the same as having led a project.
Do you need a Green Belt before a Black Belt?
No. The Six Sigma Black Belt page of ASQ (the American Society for Quality) lists work experience and signed project affidavits (signed statements confirming completed projects), not a Green Belt. IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) says there are no prerequisites for its Black Belt exam (both checked in October 2026). A Green Belt can still be a cheaper first exam: IASSC lists its Green Belt voucher (a prepaid exam code) at $350 and its Black Belt voucher at $450.
How much does a Six Sigma Black Belt cost compared with a Green Belt?
At ASQ (the American Society for Quality), the Six Sigma Green Belt exam costs $483 and the Black Belt exam $585 for nonmembers, with $100 off the first attempt for ASQ members. At IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification), the Green Belt voucher (a prepaid exam code) is $350 and the Black Belt voucher $450 (all checked in October 2026). An ASQ Black Belt must be renewed every three years, which costs $160 for nonmembers by recertification journal (a record of the credits you earned) or $585 by retaking the exam, while the ASQ Green Belt is valid for life. Training and books cost extra.
How often do US job ads mention Green Belt and Black Belt?
In October 2026, the exact phrase six sigma green belt appeared in 364 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads and the phrase six sigma black belt in 58 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads (Adzuna, a job-ad search site). An ad that names both belts counts in both figures, and ads that say only Six Sigma or only Green Belt are not counted.
Is the Six Sigma Black Belt exam harder than the Green Belt exam?
We found no verified pass rate for any Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt exam, so we cannot rank them by difficulty. The Black Belt exams have more questions. The one from ASQ (the American Society for Quality) has 165 questions against 110 for its Green Belt, in the same 4 hours 18 minutes. The one from IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) has 150 questions in four hours against 100 in three hours (checked in October 2026). ASQ's Black Belt topic list also covers team management, organization-wide deployment and Design for Six Sigma (using the methods to design new processes).
Do Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt certifications expire?
At ASQ (the American Society for Quality), the Six Sigma Green Belt is a lifetime certification, while the Black Belt must be renewed every three years with 18 recertification units (credits for professional activity) or a new exam. IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) says its belts are recognized perpetually but count as Current for three years, after which it asks for a recertification exam (both checked in October 2026).
