Business analyst certification: what 13,543 US business-analyst ads name
Our verdict: a business analyst certification is optional at the start, since no certificate is a formal entry requirement for the job. Learn the skills employers name first: in October 2026, SQL, a database query language, appeared in 13% of the ads for US business analysts and Power BI, Microsoft's reporting tool, in 5.7% (Adzuna, a job-ad search site).
A business analyst works out what a business needs from a change, such as a new system or process, and writes those needs down for the people who build it. Our ad count leaves out the credentials of IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis, the field's professional body), so it cannot show how often employers ask for them.
Your first step: open 20 business-analyst ads where you want to work and note every tool and certificate they name. Then practice SQL queries on a free public dataset and publish two or three of them, or a small project, on GitHub, a free code-sharing site, so an employer can see the work. A credential can come after that.

Which business analyst certifications do employers name, by country?
The two tables show how often business-analyst ads name SQL, Power BI and four certificate phrases. We searched one month of Adzuna job ads for the title "business analyst" (in Brazil analista de negócios, Portuguese for business analyst) and counted the ads that contain each skill or certificate phrase. Five countries had enough ads to report for October 2026.
| Country | Business-analyst ads | SQL (% of ads) | Power BI (% of ads) |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | 13,543 | 13% | 5.7% |
| UK | 1,219 | 16% | 8.3% |
| India | 1,776 | 27% | 9.8% |

In Brazil, the phrase six sigma certification appeared in 0 of 488 business-analyst ads and PL-300 in 0 (October 2026, Adzuna). In France, searched with the English title, the same two phrases appeared in 0 and 0 of 1,592 ads. In the US, Microsoft Office Specialist, the Excel exam, appeared in one of the 13,543 business-analyst ads, and Google's Business Intelligence course certificate (an online data course) in none of the 13,543 ads.
Mexico (41 ads for analista de negocio, Spanish for business analyst) and Spain (22) had too few ads to read as advice.

Best certification for a business analyst in India
For a business analyst in India, the skills to show first are SQL and a BI (business intelligence, meaning reporting) tool such as Power BI. SQL appears in 27% of 1,776 Indian business-analyst ads in October 2026 and Power BI in 9.8% (Adzuna). Of the certificates we count, PL-300 appeared in 2 of the 1,776 Indian business-analyst ads. For students, IIBA, the professional body for business analysis, lists rates of $315 or less in US dollars, depending on the region, for its Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA).
What the count misses
The IIBA credentials (ECBA, the Entry Certificate in Business Analysis; CCBA, the Certification of Capability in Business Analysis; and CBAP, the Certified Business Analysis Professional) and PMI's Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA) are not in our job-ad count, so this page cannot tell you whether employers name them in a large or a small share of ads. To check your own market, search a job board for "business analyst" plus "CBAP" or "IIBA" in your city, then compare that number with the result for "business analyst" alone.
We match exact phrases. An ad that says "Six Sigma Green Belt certified" counts, but one that says only "Lean Six Sigma" does not. Neither does an ad that writes out the Power BI credential's full name without the code PL-300. We do not separate required from preferred.
Which certification is best for a business analyst?
The best certification for a business analyst is the ECBA with no experience, the CCBA after about two to three years of work and the CBAP after five or more. PL-300 or a Tableau exam fits when your target ads name those tools. IIBA's real test is hours, not years: with three to five years, check your hours against the CCBA's 3,750 and the CBAP's 7,500. The best certification for business analysis work changes as your career moves on.
| Your situation | Best fit | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| No business-analysis experience | ECBA (IIBA) | No work-experience requirement; $395 or less, including IIBA membership; does not expire |
| About two to three years of business-analysis work | CCBA, Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (IIBA) | 3,750 hours of work in the last seven years, 21 hours of training in the last four, two references; $550 for non-members (application fee to check your experience, plus exam) |
| Five or more years of business-analysis work | CBAP, Certified Business Analysis Professional (IIBA) | 7,500 hours of work in the last 10 years, 35 hours of training in the last four, two references; $650 for non-members (application fee plus exam) |
| Business analyst working on projects | PMI-PBA (PMI) | With a bachelor's degree, 36 months of business-analysis work in the last eight years and 35 hours of training; fee not verified |
| Target ads name Power BI | Microsoft PL-300 | Proctored (supervised) exam, $165 in the US, 100 minutes |
| Target ads name Tableau | Tableau Desktop Foundations or Tableau Data Analyst | Salesforce exams, $75 or $200 |
| Target ads name Six Sigma | Six Sigma Green Belt | Exam from ASQ (American Society for Quality), $483 for non-members, or from IASSC (International Association for Six Sigma Certification), $350 |

IIBA writes the BABOK Guide (A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge, its reference book of business-analysis practices). The CCBA and CBAP also ask for professional development (PD) hours, meaning hours of business-analysis training, and two professional references, people who confirm your work.
PMI, the Project Management Institute, offers the PMI-PBA for analysts who work on projects. On an archived copy of PMI's PMI-PBA page captured October 5, 2026:
- the exam has 200 questions in 240 minutes;
- without a bachelor's degree, PMI asks for a high-school diploma or equivalent and 60 months of business-analysis work; with a degree from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center, 24 months;
- every route needs 35 contact hours, meaning hours of instruction;
- renewal takes 60 professional development units (PDUs, credits for training) every three years.
Six Sigma is a method for cutting errors in business processes, and Green Belt is one of its named skill levels. No single body issues it: ASQ and IASSC run separate exams. Pick it if your target ads name it.
Which entry-level business analyst certification suits beginners?
For business analyst certification for beginners, the ECBA is the only one of the three IIBA exams we cover that needs no experience. We did not check prerequisites for the tool exams; PL-300 is an exam on Power BI itself, so it fits once you use the tool.
| Credential | Type | Price (US) | Format | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECBA, Entry Certificate in Business Analysis | IIBA exam, online and proctored | $395 or less, bundled with IIBA membership, a practice exam and IIBA study material | 50 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes | None; it does not expire |
| Microsoft Business Analyst Professional Certificate | Course certificate on Coursera (an online course platform), 6 courses | Not shown on the program page | About 3 months at 10 hours a week | Not stated |
| Microsoft PL-300 | Proctored exam on Power BI | $165, varies by country | 100 minutes; passing score 700 on Microsoft's scale | Yearly, with a free online test |
| Tableau Desktop Foundations | Proctored Salesforce exam | $75 | 40 questions in 70 minutes | Not checked |
Source: IIBA ECBA page and ECBA handbook, Coursera program page, Microsoft Learn and Salesforce; check dates under Sources.
The ECBA price is listed by IIBA as $395 or less; the lower prices it names are student rates of $315 or less, depending on the region, so budget $395. The ECBA tests knowledge from the BABOK Guide and IIBA's Business Analysis Standard, a second IIBA reference document; a course certificate only proves you finished a set of lessons. To choose between them, take PL-300 once you can use Power BI and your target ads name it; otherwise take the ECBA. After the ECBA, the next IIBA step is the CCBA, once a business-analysis job has given you 3,750 hours of work.
How much does a business analyst certification cost?
IIBA's entry exam, the ECBA, costs $395 or less. At IIBA's non-member prices, a first attempt at the CCBA costs $550 and at the CBAP $650, or $670 and $770 once the first renewal is added. The totals below are IIBA fees only.
| Credential (IIBA) | Application fee | Exam fee | First attempt | Renewal fee every three years | First attempt plus first renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECBA | None | $395 or less (bundle) | $395 or less | None | $395 or less |
| CCBA, non-member | $145 | $405 | $550 | $120 | $670 |
| CCBA, member | $145 | $250 | $395 | $85 | $480 |
| CBAP, non-member | $145 | $505 | $650 | $120 | $770 |
| CBAP, member | $145 | $350 | $495 | $85 | $580 |
Source: IIBA ECBA, CCBA, CBAP and recertification pages (see Sources). Member rows exclude IIBA membership dues.
The application fee is a non-refundable payment to have your experience checked. If you are not a member, budget the non-member row. The member rows apply only if you hold IIBA membership, and we did not check what membership dues cost. Renewal keeps the credential current: you earn 60 continuing development units (CDUs, credits for training and related professional activity) every three years and pay the renewal fee.
The tool exams cost less per attempt; their prices are in the best-fit table above. PL-300 renews free each year, a Tableau Data Analyst retake costs $100, and ASQ members save $100 on the first Green Belt exam.
What we did not check:
- the PMI-PBA exam fee and PMI's renewal fee;
- IIBA membership dues and IIBA's retake fees;
- the cost of the training hours the CCBA and CBAP require (21 or 35 PD hours) and of the 60 CDUs for each renewal;
- IIBA's other credentials, IIBA-AAC and CBDA, for eligibility and fees;
- the Coursera price of Microsoft's Business Analyst Professional Certificate, which the program page does not show.

Is a business analyst certification worth it?
A certification is worth it for a business analyst when it records experience you already have, or when it teaches a tool your target ads name. The CCBA and CBAP are built for the first case: IIBA asks for 3,750 or 7,500 hours of business-analysis work before you can apply. PL-300 and the Tableau exams fit the second.
Two groups have a reason to pay. Analysts with two or more years of business-analysis work can turn that record into a credential an employer can check. Analysts whose target ads name Power BI or Tableau can prove the tool with a supervised exam, and PL-300 renewal is free.
Two groups can wait. Without experience, put a SQL project first (see the first step at the top); the ECBA can follow. Analysts whose target ads name no credential can let their work history speak instead.

Business analyst certification salary: what our data shows
Our job-ad counts carry no salary data for business analysts, so we cannot say what a certification adds to pay. IIBA's CBAP page claims that CBAP holders earn "up to 19% more" than peers without it. That is IIBA's own marketing figure, and CBAP holders also have five or more years of experience, so it does not show what the credential adds by itself.
Do you need a certification to be a business analyst?
You do not need one to start: no certification is a formal entry requirement, and our data cannot show how often employers ask for the IIBA and PMI credentials. IIBA's CCBA and CBAP require years of business-analysis work, so they follow a job rather than lead to one. In the 13,543 US business-analyst ads we counted in October 2026, Six Sigma Green Belt appeared in 14 (Adzuna).
Best certifications for business analysts: what Reddit posters ask
The three Reddit posts we collected on business-analysis credentials ask about order and value. Below is each question with what our data and IIBA's rules can answer.
A poster new to the field asked which of the ECBA, CCBA or CBAP to focus on (r/analytics, July 2026). IIBA's rules answer it: without experience, only the ECBA is open.
A career changer planned SQL first, then Excel, then Power BI with PL-300, and the ECBA "at some point" (r/analytics, July 2026). One reply backed PL-300 and said "you can probably skip the ECBA for now" (r/analytics, July 2026). That reply is one person's view; our count shows SQL in 13% of 13,543 US business-analyst ads in October 2026, but it cannot rank SQL before Excel or Power BI.
A poster who had earned the ECBA and then lost their job asked whether a Six Sigma Green Belt was worth the cost for process-analyst roles (r/SixSigma, July 2026). In our October 2026 count, the phrase six sigma green belt appeared in 14 of the 13,543 US business-analyst ads (Adzuna), so pay for it only if the process roles you target name it.

Questions people ask
Which certificate is best for a business analyst?
With no experience, the Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) is the best fit; with two to three years of business-analysis work, the CCBA; with five or more, the CBAP. All three come from IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis, the professional body for the field), which sets these experience rules. We do not count IIBA credentials in job ads. SQL, a database query language, appeared in 13% of 13,543 US business-analyst ads in October 2026 (Adzuna, a job-ad search site). Microsoft's Power BI exam, PL-300, appeared in 4 of the 13,543 US business-analyst ads that month.
Can you become a business analyst with no experience?
Yes, but certification is not the route in. The two senior exams of IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis), the CCBA and the CBAP, require 3,750 and 7,500 hours of business-analysis work, so they come after a first job. The ECBA, IIBA's entry exam, has no experience requirement and costs $395 or less as a bundle with IIBA membership (IIBA, checked October 11, 2026). Start with SQL, the language for pulling data from databases: it appeared in 13% of the ads for US business analysts in October 2026 (Adzuna, a job-ad search site).
Is it worth getting a business analyst certification?
It is worth it as proof of experience you already have, if an employer you target asks for it, and less so as a way into a first job. The CCBA and CBAP from IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) require two to three and five or more years of business-analysis work, and we do not count either in job ads. Among the certifications we do count, Six Sigma certification (a process-improvement credential) appeared in 23 of the 13,543 US business-analyst ads in October 2026 (Adzuna, a job-ad search site). Power BI, Microsoft's reporting tool, appeared in 5.7% of the ads in the same count.
Will AI replace business analysts?
Our data cannot answer that: job-ad counts do not predict it, and we do not forecast it. What we can report is the current month. On Adzuna, a job-ad search site, we counted 13,543 US business-analyst ads for October 2026. SQL, the language for querying databases, appeared in 13% of the ads for US business analysts, and Power BI, Microsoft's reporting tool, in 5.7%.
Is a business analytics certificate worth it?
It is worth it as structured training, but we cannot say whether employers look for it by name. Business analytics (working with data and reports) overlaps with business analysis (defining what a business needs). Business-analyst ads name the data skills: in India, SQL (a language for reading data from databases) appeared in 27% of 1,776 business-analyst ads that Adzuna, a job-ad search site, listed in October 2026. A course certificate such as Microsoft's Business Analyst Professional Certificate on Coursera, an online course platform (six courses, about three months at 10 hours a week, no experience required), is not in our job-ad count.
Do business analysts need certifications?
No certification is a formal entry requirement for business analysts, and our data cannot show how often employers ask for the IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) credentials. IIBA sets years of work as the entry rule for its CCBA and CBAP exams, so those follow experience rather than lead to it. We counted 13,543 US business-analyst ads in October 2026 (Adzuna, a job-ad search site). Six Sigma certification, a process-improvement credential, appeared in 23 of them, and SQL, the main database language, in 13%.
