How to become a data analyst without a degree: what 6,094 US job ads ask for

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

It depends on the employer, and official US data shows a degree is the common route. How to become a data analyst without a degree: start today with 20 local job ads, then learn SQL (a database query language), named in 42% of the ads for US data analysts on Adzuna (a job-ad site) in October 2026.

A beginner course such as the Google Data Analytics Certificate asks for no degree, Google says. The Reddit posts we collected lean pessimistic about routes built on a certificate alone, and an internal move at a current employer came up as one way in.

Can you be a data analyst without a degree?

Yes, where an employer accepts skills in place of a degree, though official US data shows that is the less common route. The rule that applies to you is the one in each job ad, so read the requirements line of every ad you consider.

Do data analysts need a degree?

Official US sources point to a bachelor's degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, the US government's labor-data agency) has no page titled data analyst. Its Occupational Outlook Handbook, the government's career guide, lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for all four of the closest analyst occupations we checked. Management analysts are included as a neighbor, not a match.

BLS occupation Typical entry-level education (BLS)
Data scientists Bachelor's degree
Operations research analysts (use math to help organizations decide) Bachelor's degree
Market research analysts (study customers and sales) Bachelor's degree
Management analysts Bachelor's degree plus several years of related work experience

Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, archived copies captured September 25 to October 10, 2026.

O*NET (an official US database of job profiles) asked survey respondents in two data jobs how much education a new hire needs. Business intelligence analysts (people who turn company data into regular reports) are the closer match to an analyst job; data science is a further step that goes deeper into statistics.

O*NET occupation Bachelor's Master's Associate's
Data scientists 48% 44% 4%
Business intelligence analysts 68% 23% 5%

Source: O*NET OnLine, profiles 15-2051.00 and 15-2051.01, share of survey respondents naming each degree; associate's means an associate's or other two-year degree. Read October 11, 2026.

These figures come from government surveys, not from job ads.

What if the ads you want ask for a degree?

Check the exact wording first. If an ad asks for a degree or equivalent experience, or lists a degree as preferred rather than required, you can still apply with a portfolio. If the ads you read set a firm degree rule, three moves remain:

  1. Widen the search to junior, reporting and operations analyst titles, and tally those ads too.
  2. Ask about an internal move at your current employer, where your knowledge of the business counts (see career change to data analyst).
  3. Look at a degree route that gives credit for what you study now; the bootcamp and online degree section covers it.

Do data analysts need to code?

Plan on writing some code. SQL, a query language (the commands you type to ask a database for rows), appeared in 42% of the ads for US data analysts on Adzuna in October 2026. Python (a general programming language) appeared in 29% and Power BI (Microsoft's dashboard tool) in 25%.

Skill What it is Share of US data-analyst ads, October 2026
SQL A query language for pulling, filtering and joining rows from databases 42%
Python A general programming language used to clean data, automate steps and run statistics 29%
Power BI Microsoft's tool for building dashboards (interactive pages of charts and reports) 25%

Source: Adzuna API, 6,094 US data-analyst ads collected in October 2026, counted when the ad text contains the skill's name. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

Spreadsheet skills (Excel), Tableau (another dashboard tool) and R (a language for statistics) are not among the skills we count for this role, so they have no share here. Your own tally of local ads, the first of the steps into data analytics, fills that gap. The same three skills were counted in UK, Indian and Brazilian ads for October 2026; our page on data analyst certifications gives each country's figures.

Do data analysts need Python?

Python helps, and a beginner can learn it after SQL. In US data-analyst ads on Adzuna in October 2026, Python appeared in 29% of the ads. Our plan puts SQL first so you can pull your own data before you clean it in Python.

If you are choosing between Python and R, keep in mind that our ad counts include Python and not R. For the Google Data Analytics Certificate, the course FAQ says the curriculum does not cover R, while the tools list on the same Coursera page names R, so check the syllabus before you rely on either.

How to get into data analytics without a degree

Start with the ads, then follow our suggested order: SQL, spreadsheets, one dashboard tool and one project. The plan assumes about 10 hours a week, the pace Google uses for its course estimate, so eight weeks is about 80 hours. It gets you to a first project, not to job-ready; Google's six-month course covers more.

  1. Today: open 20 data-analyst ads for your area on any job site. In a spreadsheet, note for each ad the tools it names and its education line, word for word. This tells you what local employers ask for, including how each one words its education requirement.
  2. Weeks 1 to 3, SQL: learn SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY and JOIN (the commands that pick columns, filter rows, summarize by group and combine tables). Practice on a free sample database until you can answer a question you wrote yourself.
  3. Weeks 4 and 5, spreadsheets: learn pivot tables (tables that count and total rows by group), lookups (formulas that pull a matching value from another table) and charts.
  4. Weeks 6 and 7, one dashboard tool: pick Power BI or Tableau, whichever your 20 ads name. Build one dashboard from your SQL results.
  5. Week 8, one project: take a public data set (data a government or company publishes free online), ask one question, answer it with SQL and a dashboard, and write one page on what you found. Publish it as the first piece of your portfolio.

Is a certificate worth it without a degree?

As structured lessons, a beginner certificate can help. The Google Data Analytics Certificate is a course certificate, earned by completing a 9-course series on Coursera (an online course platform) rated beginner level. Google says: "Learn at your own pace, no degree or experience required." It teaches spreadsheets, SQL, Python and Tableau, according to Google.

Coursera charges $49 a month in the US and Canada after a seven-day free trial, and Google estimates six months at 10 hours a week. At that pace, six months at $49 a month comes to $294; a slower pace costs more and a faster one less. For Coursera's plans and other courses, see our Coursera review.

As a credential in ads, the Google certificate is a separate question. The phrase google data analytics appeared in 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads on Adzuna in October 2026. That count misses ads that name the program in other words, so it may undercount.

Microsoft's PL-300 is a different kind of credential: a proctored exam (a timed test taken under a supervisor's watch) on Power BI. It costs $165 in the US, with prices set by country, and lasts 100 minutes; a score of 700 out of 1,000 passes. Microsoft expects candidates to be proficient with Power Query (Power BI's data-cleaning tool) and DAX (Power BI's formula language), so it suits a second step, not week one. The phrase pl-300 appeared in 4 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads on Adzuna in October 2026. For Tableau's exams, see our Tableau certification page.

How long does it take to become a data analyst without a degree?

Plan on months of study before the job search, and treat the search as a separate stretch of time. No official source we found measures the whole path, so each figure here is labeled by who gives it.

  • Vendor estimate: Google estimates its beginner certificate at six months at 10 hours a week, and says some learners finish sooner.
  • Our suggested plan: eight weeks at about 10 hours a week to a first project, as a starting pace.
  • Reported by a poster: a former educator on r/analytics (a Reddit forum about analytics) landed a data science role rather than an analyst job. The poster said: "I applied to roles in the industry for about 3 years before landing this role" (r/analytics, July 2026). A portfolio of self-made projects helped, the poster said.

That report shows the search can outlast the course; it does not give an average.

Career change to data analyst: where to start

Start where you already work, if you can. A former claims adjuster who moved into analytics inside the same company wrote: "If you can move into analytics within your company that would be best because you have domain knowledge" (r/analytics, July 2026). Domain knowledge means knowing how your industry works, and that poster credited a mentor and good evaluations as well.

A career change to data analytics from retail, office work or teaching can begin with data you already handle: sales reports, schedules, attendance or grades. Ask whoever builds those reports what tools they use, and offer to help with one. For courses aimed at people switching fields, see our guide to online courses for a career change.

What goes in a data analyst portfolio?

A portfolio is a small set of work samples you can show an employer, such as a web page or a shared folder of projects. One poster who switched from a non-technical role said: "What helped me most was working on small projects instead of just completing online lessons" (r/analytics, July 2026).

Each project should hold five things: the question you asked, a link to the public data, your SQL queries, one dashboard and a short write-up of what you found and what you would check next. Finish one project before you start a second.

What do Reddit posters say about a career change to data analyst?

The posts we collected describe slow searches and mixed views of certificates. They are single accounts, not a survey.

  • On r/coursera (a Reddit forum about Coursera courses), one poster asked: "Has anyone here actually landed a job with just Google certs and no traditional degree?" (r/coursera, December 2025). One reply said there was "an oversupply of very well qualified people."
  • Another r/coursera poster said that after more than four months with Coursera certificates on a resume, they were not getting many calls or interviews, though the free trial was a cheap way to test fields (r/coursera, January 2026).
  • An experienced analyst rated the Google certificate 1 out of 5 as too basic for them (r/coursera, April 2026).

Is a bootcamp or an online degree a better route?

That depends on what the ads for jobs you want ask for. Where they set a firm degree rule, compare a degree program's cost and length in our guide to online degrees, and read our certificate vs degree comparison first. A bootcamp is an intensive paid course, not a credential; our coding bootcamps guide covers what to check before you pay.

If you may want a degree later, Google's certificate carries an ACE recommendation (from the American Council on Education, a US body that advises colleges on credit) of up to 12 college credits. Whether a college accepts them is the college's decision.

Which jobs sit next to data analyst?

Three nearby roles use the same skills in different proportions. A business analyst works closer to requirements and processes, a data scientist goes further into statistics and machine learning (software that learns patterns from data), and a data engineer builds the systems that move and store the data analysts query (see data engineer without a degree). If an employer you target runs Snowflake (a cloud data warehouse), our page on Snowflake's SnowPro Core exam covers that credential.

Your next step is the first one in the plan: open 20 data-analyst ads for your area today and note the tools and the education line in each.

What we did not check

  • Degree requirements, "no degree required" wording, years of experience and salary in job ads. We count only the skills SQL, Python and Power BI and named certificates.
  • Hiring outcomes. Nothing here measures whether a course or certificate leads to a job; the outcomes quoted come from single Reddit posts.

Questions people ask

Can I be a data analyst without a degree?

It depends on the employer. Official US data shows a bachelor's degree as the common route into analyst jobs, and each job ad sets its own education rule, so read the requirements line of every ad you apply to. What US data-analyst ads did name in October 2026 was SQL, a language for pulling data from databases: it appeared in 42% of the ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.

Do data analysts need a degree?

Official US sources list a bachelor's degree as the typical entry point. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, the US government's labor-data agency) has no page titled data analyst; for the four closest analyst occupations we checked, it gives a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education. O*NET, an official US database of job profiles, surveyed business intelligence analysts (people who turn company data into regular reports). There, 68% of respondents said a new hire needs a bachelor's degree, 23% a master's and 5% an associate's degree (a two-year college degree). A given job ad can ask for less or more.

Do data analysts need to code?

Plan on writing some code. SQL, a language for pulling and combining rows from databases, appeared in 42% of the ads for US data analysts on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in October 2026. In the same US ads, Python, a general programming language used to clean and analyze data, appeared in 29%. A beginner can start with SQL and add Python next.

Do data analysts need Python?

Python helps, and a beginner can learn it after SQL. Python, a general programming language, appeared in 29% of the ads for US data analysts on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in October 2026. CertWorthIt does not count R, another language for statistics, in ads. For the Google Data Analytics Certificate, a beginner online course on Coursera, the course FAQ says the curriculum does not cover R, while the tools list on the same page names R, so check the syllabus.

How long does it take to become a data analyst without a degree?

Learning takes months, and no official source we found measures the whole path. Google estimates its beginner Data Analytics Certificate at six months at 10 hours a week (Coursera, October 2026). The job search adds its own time: one former educator who posted on Reddit in July 2026 said they applied for about three years before landing a role, in data science rather than analysis. That is one person's account, not a typical time.

Is the Google Data Analytics Certificate enough without a degree?

Nothing we found shows that the certificate on its own is enough to get hired. It is a way to learn, and Google says it requires no degree or experience. It is a 9-course series on Coursera at $49 a month in the US after a seven-day free trial; at Google's estimate of six months at 10 hours a week, that comes to $294. On Adzuna, a job-ad search site, the phrase google data analytics appeared in 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads in October 2026. Finish it with a project you can explain, because the project shows the skills.

How do I make a data analyst career change?

A data analyst career change starts with three steps. Read 20 data-analyst ads in your area and note the tools and education lines they list. Learn SQL (a language for pulling data from databases). Then finish one project on public data and put it in a portfolio, a small set of work samples you can show employers. If your current employer has an analytics team, ask about an internal move, where your knowledge of the business counts.

What do Reddit posters say about a career change to data analyst?

In the posts we collected from the Reddit forums r/analytics and r/coursera in 2025 and 2026, switchers described slow searches. One former educator said they applied for about three years before landing a data science role. Another poster said small projects helped more than finishing online lessons. A third, after more than four months with Coursera certificates on a resume, said they were not getting many calls. These are single accounts, not a survey.
