How to become a data engineer without a degree: what 21,791 US job ads name

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

How to become a data engineer without a degree: start from another data or IT job and learn SQL first, because official US sources treat a degree as the typical way in. In October 2026, sql (a language for querying databases) appeared in 28% of the ads for US data-engineer jobs on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.

A data engineer builds data pipelines: automated steps that copy data out of apps and databases, clean it and load it into a data warehouse (a database built for analysis) where analysts can query it. We found no source counting data engineers hired without a degree. We count skills and certificate phrases in job ads, not degree wording, so our data cannot show how many ads ask for a degree. The degree side comes from official US sources in the next section.

Before you study, do one free check that works even before you have a target employer. This is your own exercise, not data we collected: save 10 data-engineer ads from your area or from remote listings. From each, copy the education line, the tools, and the past job titles or years of experience it asks for. The tools that keep showing up in your saved ads are what you learn after SQL and Python.

Can you become a data engineer without a degree?

It may be possible, but it is harder: official US sources treat a degree as the typical way in, and we found no source counting data engineers hired without one. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, has no data-engineer occupation. Its Occupational Outlook Handbook, a guide to US jobs, covers the nearest work as database administrators and architects, under two SOC codes (the government's job-classification numbers): 15-1242 for administrators and 15-1243 for architects. That is a different occupation from data engineer.

The BLS page on database administrators and architects gives a bachelor's degree (a four-year college degree) as the typical entry-level education. It says they "typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field" such as engineering. BLS adds that some employers may prefer a master's degree (a graduate degree) in data or database management, and that the work needs an understanding of database languages such as SQL.

ONET, the US Labor Department's database of job descriptions, lists Data Engineer among the sample job titles reported for Database Architects (15-1243.00). It places that occupation in Job Zone Four, which ONET labels as needing considerable preparation. Its education note, "Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not," covers the whole zone, not database architects alone. When ONET surveyed people in database-architect jobs about what a new hire needs, 76% of respondents said a bachelor's degree, 14% a master's degree and 5% a post-secondary certificate (a short program after high school). The ONET page we read gives no survey year for these answers.

BLS publishes no data-engineer pay. For database administrators and architects, it gives a median annual wage (the middle value) of $126,760 in May 2025: $104,620 for administrators and $139,500 for architects. Those figures are not data-engineer pay or pay for workers without a degree.

What skills do data-engineer job ads name?

Data-engineer ads name tools, and we count three of them: SQL, Spark and Airflow. SQL pulls and reshapes the data held in databases. Spark is an engine that processes large data sets across a cluster (a group of computers working together). Airflow is a free tool that runs the steps of a pipeline in order, on a schedule.

In October 2026, sql appeared in 28% of the ads for US data engineers on Adzuna, spark in 12% and airflow in 9.3%.

Country Data-engineer ads counted Ads naming sql Ads naming spark Ads naming airflow
US 21,791 28% 12% 9.3%

The UK and India rows are side notes for readers outside the US, and the UK row rests on 1,451 ads, so read it with care. We did not count Python, cloud platform names or other tools, so their absence from the table says nothing about whether employers want them. Our advice is to learn Python (a programming language) alongside SQL, because pipeline scripts are written in it; the 10 ads you save will show which other tools to add.

Data engineer career change: where do you start?

Start from a job that already works with data, and learn the pipeline tools on the side. In the Reddit posts we collected, posters describe data engineering as a job people reach after other work. BLS points the same way for its nearest occupation: "Experienced database administrators may advance to become database architects."

One commenter on r/dataengineering, a Reddit forum, wrote: "Data Engineer has never really been considered a 'junior' role." (r/dataengineering, September 2026). Another named the steps before it: "BI Dev, Reporting, Data Analyst" (r/dataengineering, September 2026). BI stands for business intelligence, the reports and dashboards a company runs on. These are single reader reports, not a survey.

If you work in retail, admin or another job with no data work, your first move is a data analyst or reporting job; our guide to becoming a data analyst without a degree covers that step. The routes that come up, with our pages on each job:

  • From data analyst or BI work: one commenter wrote that it is "Pretty typical to be doing some data engineering work while being a data analyst or BI." (r/dataengineering, August 2026). Our data analyst page shows what those ads name.
  • From database administration (running and backing up a company's databases): BLS describes that move toward database architect above. We have no page for this job.
  • From cloud or IT work: a cloud engineer runs the rented online servers (the cloud) that pipelines can run on.
  • Next to data science: our guide to becoming a data scientist without a degree covers the neighboring job, and the data scientist page shows its ads.

The route is not easy even from a data job. A junior analyst without a STEM degree (science, technology, engineering or math) wrote: "it's been hell trying to break into DE" (DE means data engineering), in r/dataengineering, October 2026.

A suggested order of study, our reading of the skills above:

  1. SQL: write queries that filter, join and group tables on a free database on your own computer, such as SQLite, which its makers let anyone use for any purpose at no cost.
  2. Python: write scripts that read files and pull data from an API (a way for one program to ask another for data). We did not verify a free beginner Python course, so search for one and check, before you start, that its page says it is written for people new to programming.
  3. ETL and a data warehouse: ETL means extract, transform, load, the three steps a pipeline runs. Load cleaned data into tables built for analysis.
  4. Airflow and Spark: schedule your pipeline with Airflow, then try Spark on a larger public data set.

A bootcamp, an intensive paid course from a private provider, is another way to learn these. Our coding bootcamps guide lists what to ask before you pay, and our career change guide compares courses and exams across other jobs.

Which course certificates and exams fit a beginner?

Two course certificates on Coursera, an online course site, are listed as beginner level: IBM's and Meta's. A course certificate shows you finished a set of online lessons and has no proctored exam (one where a supervisor watches you). Vendor exams fit later, after hands-on use of the vendor's platform. Meta's program is titled Database Engineer, and we did not check whether its lessons cover Spark, Airflow or data warehouses.

Program Provider Level or experience the provider states Length the provider states Fee
IBM Data Engineering Professional Certificate IBM on Coursera Beginner; basic IT literacy and IT infrastructure knowledge expected 16 courses, six months at 10 hours a week Check on Coursera before you enroll (not shown on the page we read)
Meta Database Engineer Professional Certificate Meta on Coursera Beginner; "No degree or experience required to get started" 9 courses, six months at 6 hours a week Check on Coursera before you enroll (not shown on the page we read)
Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate (Associate is the level of Databricks' first data engineering exam) Databricks No prerequisite, related training highly recommended; at least six months of hands-on Databricks use recommended 45 questions, 90 minutes $200
SnowPro Core Snowflake Six or more months of Snowflake use recommended 100 questions, 115 minutes $175 ($140 in India)

Databricks and Snowflake sell cloud data platforms, services that store and process data on rented servers. SnowPro is Snowflake's exam program. AWS's own data engineering exam expects more: AWS (Amazon Web Services) describes the ideal candidate for its data engineering exam as having 2 to 3 years in data engineering or data architecture. Our AWS certification overview lists its levels, and our data engineer certifications page compares all the exams and their renewal costs.

No official source we read says a course certificate replaces a degree. Our guides on certificate vs degree and certificate vs certification explain how a degree, a course certificate and an exam-based certification differ.

Do data-engineer job ads name certificates?

Job ads name certificates by phrase, and we count four phrases in data-engineer ads. Each phrase is worded in its own style (an exam program or a full course name), so the rows are not a ranking. In October 2026, the phrase databricks certified appeared in 173 of the 21,791 US data-engineer ads on Adzuna, and ibm data engineering professional certificate in none of the 21,791.

Read each row as a minimum: an ad that writes a credential in other words is missed, and a count cannot tell a required credential from a nice-to-have one. The UK counts are small, so read them with care.

How long does a data engineer career change take?

No source we read measures the time from first lesson to first data-engineer job. The figures we have cover course study only. IBM's Coursera listing states six months at 10 hours a week for its certificate, and Meta's listing six months at 6 hours a week for its own; each page's FAQ gives a different, shorter estimate. Those are the providers' estimates for the lessons, not a measure of when anyone gets hired. The time spent in an adjacent data job first is the unknown part, and we have no figure for it.

What should you show instead of a degree?

Show one pipeline that works from start to finish, with the steps written down so a hiring manager can follow them without your help. Build it in this order:

  1. Pull data on a schedule. Choose a public data set that updates, such as weather or transit data, and pull it each day with a scheduled Airflow task.
  2. Load and transform with SQL. Load the raw data into a database, then use SQL to clean it into tables built for analysis (loading first and transforming after is called ELT).
  3. Show the result. Point a simple chart at the final table.
  4. Write a README (a text page stored with the code) that explains each step, one problem you fixed and what the project costs to run.

Publish the code in a public repository (an online folder for code, for example on GitHub). Never commit passwords, API keys or cloud access keys to a public repository; keep them in a local file that Git (the tool that tracks code changes) is set to ignore. If a key does land in a public repository, cancel it and create a new one, because deleting the file does not remove it from the saved history of changes. If you build in a cloud account, set a spending alert first (a message when your bill passes a limit), and stop the services after each session. On your resume, list only tools you used in the project, in the same words as the 10 data-engineer ads you saved.

Skills-based hiring means judging candidates by what they can do, with work-sample tasks or skills tests, however they learned. A 2024 study by the Burning Glass Institute and Harvard Business School found that where a firm dropped a degree requirement, the share of hires without a bachelor's degree rose by about 3.5 percentage points. The overall effect was small: spread over all US hires in 2023, the study put the gain at "not even 1 in 700 hires." Our skills-based hiring guide has the full figures.

What we did not check

  • Degree wording in job ads, including "no degree required" lines.
  • Python, cloud platform names, other tools, years of experience and salary in data-engineer ads.
  • Course prices for the IBM and Meta certificates, and job results for people who finished any course, bootcamp or certificate.
  • Whether an ad lists a skill or certificate as required or as a nice-to-have.
  • Free SQL or Python courses for beginners. Python's own official tutorial says it is written for programmers new to Python, not for people new to programming.

Questions people ask

Can you become a data engineer without a degree?

Becoming a data engineer without a degree may be possible, but it is harder: official US sources treat a degree as the typical way in, and we found no source counting data engineers hired without one. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, has no data-engineer occupation. For the nearest one, the people who run and design company databases (SOC codes 15-1242 and 15-1243, the government's job-classification numbers), it names a bachelor's degree (a four-year college degree) as the typical entry level. CertWorthIt counts skills and certificate phrases in job ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, not degree wording. In October 2026, the word sql (SQL is the standard database query language) appeared in 28% of the ads for US data engineers.

How do I make a data engineer career change?

For a data engineer career change, start from a job that already works with data, such as data analyst, BI developer (business intelligence: building reports and dashboards) or database administrator. That route is what commenters on Reddit's r/dataengineering forum describe in the posts we collected, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics says experienced database administrators may advance to database architects. Start with SQL, the language used to ask a database for data, then Python, a programming language, then one data pipeline project (automated steps that move and clean data). In October 2026, sql appeared in 28% of the ads for US data engineers on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in CertWorthIt's count.

What should I learn first to become a data engineer?

Learn SQL first, the standard language for pulling data out of databases; then Python, a programming language; then Spark, an engine that processes large data sets across many computers, and Airflow, a tool that runs pipeline steps on a schedule. This order is our reading, and SQL, Spark and Airflow are the three skills we counted, not a full list. In October 2026, CertWorthIt counted 21,791 US data-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. The word sql appeared in 28% of the ads, spark in 12% and airflow in 9.3%.

Is data engineering an entry-level job?

The sources we read describe data engineering as a job people reach after other work, not as a first job. One commenter on Reddit's r/dataengineering forum wrote in September 2026 that data engineer has never been considered a junior role and typically needs a couple of years of experience or graduate education. Another named BI developer (business intelligence: reports and dashboards), reporting and data analyst jobs as the steps before it. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says experienced database administrators may advance to database architects. CertWorthIt does not count experience requirements in job ads, so these are single reports, not a measure.

What does a data engineer earn in the US?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, has no data-engineer occupation, so it publishes no data-engineer pay. The nearest occupation covers the people who run and design company databases (SOC codes 15-1242 and 15-1243, the government's job-classification numbers). For it, BLS gives a median annual wage (the middle value) of $126,760 in May 2025: $104,620 for administrators and $139,500 for architects. Those figures are not data-engineer pay or pay for workers without a degree. CertWorthIt does not count salaries in job ads.

Can a certificate replace a degree for data engineer jobs?

No official source we read says a certificate replaces a degree for data engineer jobs. The IBM Data Engineering Professional Certificate and the Meta Database Engineer Professional Certificate are course certificates on Coursera, an online course site: they show you finished a set of online lessons. Neither ends in a proctored exam (one where a supervisor watches you). Employers decide what they accept. In October 2026, the phrase ibm data engineering professional certificate appeared in none of the 21,791 US data-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in CertWorthIt's count.
