Is Coursera worth it? What job ads, prices and refund rules show
Coursera is worth it for learning job skills at a low price but rarely pays off as a resume line that employers search for. Of the 6,094 US data-analyst job ads we counted in October 2026, only 7 named the Google Data Analytics Certificate, Coursera's best-known program. SQL appeared in 42% of the same ads (Adzuna). The pattern repeats for IT support, cybersecurity and project management: employers name the skill or an industry certification, and only a handful of ads name the Coursera certificate. Pay for Coursera to learn those skills: one Google certificate costs $147 to $294 in the US if you finish in three to six months. If you need a credential recruiters filter for, budget for an exam such as CompTIA A+, the CAPM or the PMP instead.

Quick answer: when Coursera is worth paying for
- You want to learn SQL, Python, Excel, IT basics or project-management methods cheaply and with structure. Good value. A Google Professional Certificate costs $49 a month in the US, and a fast learner can finish in a few months.
- You want a certificate that recruiters filter for. Not on its own. In our job-ad counts, the Google certificates sold on Coursera barely register. Pair the course with projects you can show, or take an exam the ads do name.
- You want a degree. The bachelor's and master's degrees on Coursera are awarded by universities, so they carry the university's accreditation. That is a different purchase, priced in the tens of thousands of dollars.
- You want college credit for a certificate. Some programs carry an American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation, but each college decides whether to accept it.
- You only want to try a subject for free. Harder than it used to be: since 2025 most courses open only their first module without payment.
- You are in India or another lower-price market. Plans and prices differ by country; in India, Coursera Plus is sold only as a monthly plan, and financial aid is applied for course by course. For whether employers and universities in India accept the certificate, see whether Coursera certificates are valid in India.
What Coursera costs in 2026
| Option | US price | Trial or refund |
|---|---|---|
| Coursera Plus, monthly | $59 a month | Seven-day free trial; no refund after the trial |
| Coursera Plus, annual | $399 a year | Refund if requested within 14 days; certificates earned in that window are revoked |
| One Professional Certificate (example: Google Data Analytics) | $49 a month | Seven-day free trial |
| One course, one-time payment | Varies by course; 180 days of access | Refund within seven days if you have not earned the certificate |
| Degrees | Set by the university (example: $27,288 for the Illinois iMBA) | Set by the university |

Prices are regional. The same Coursera Plus page showed €50 a month and €343 a year to a visitor from Finland on October 3, 2026, and Coursera says learners in India can only buy Coursera Plus monthly. Check the price shown in your own account before you compare.
Do you have to pay for a Coursera certificate?
Yes. A certificate requires the paid version of a course, a subscription or approved financial aid. The free option is now called Preview. It gives full access to a course's first module, including its graded work, and locks the rest; you cannot earn a certificate in Preview. A few courses offer "Full Course, No Certificate." Learners on r/coursera started reporting in 2025 that the old audit option, which opened every video for free, had disappeared. One wrote that Coursera "only offers one module per course" (r/coursera, November 2025).
Financial aid: per course, not per program
Coursera offers financial aid for eligible courses. You apply on the course page with a written statement of at least 150 words, and the review takes up to 16 days. The discount depends on your application and where you live. Two rules trip people up. Aid is granted course by course: for a Specialization or Professional Certificate, you apply again after finishing each course. And starting a free trial cancels any application under review. One r/coursera user expected aid to open all six courses of the Google IT Support certificate and was told by support to apply for each course separately (r/coursera), which matches the official rule.
Refund and trial rules that cost people money
Coursera does not give partial refunds. On a monthly subscription you will not get a certificate until the trial ends and your first payment goes through, and there is no refund once you have paid. On the annual plan, finishing a course inside the 14-day refund window and then asking for your money back means losing that certificate. Two complaints recur on r/coursera. One user bought Coursera Plus for a course that turned out not to be included, waited on support and missed the 14-day window (r/coursera). Another accepted a Plus trial right after buying a course and found that Coursera "refunds the cost of the course and charges the exact amount for the Coursera Plus trial" (r/coursera), so canceling Plus later removed the course too. Before you buy, check that your program shows the Coursera Plus badge, and do not accept a trial on top of a purchase you want to keep.
Coursera Plus or one certificate: the cost logic
Coursera Plus makes sense only when you will finish more than one program within the time you pay for. The math below uses Coursera's US list prices: $49 a month for a Google Professional Certificate, $59 a month or $399 a year for Coursera Plus.
Example 1: one certificate at Google's pace. The Google Data Analytics certificate is estimated at six months at 10 hours a week. On its own subscription: 6 × $49 = $294. On Coursera Plus monthly: 6 × $59 = $354. On the annual plan: $399. The single subscription is cheapest by $60 to $105.
Example 2: one certificate, finished fast. If you put in 20 hours a week and finish in three months, the single subscription costs 3 × $49 = $147. Speed saves more money than any plan choice.
Example 3: two certificates back to back. Google Data Analytics and then Google Advanced Data Analytics, each estimated at six months: 12 × $49 = $588 on separate subscriptions, against $399 for a year of Coursera Plus. The annual plan saves $189 here, as long as both programs carry the Plus badge.
Break-even points. The annual plan costs as much as about eight months of a $49 subscription ($399 ÷ $49 = 8.1) and about seven months of Plus monthly ($399 ÷ $59 = 6.8). If you expect to study for less than seven months in the year, pay monthly. If you expect to keep going all year, the annual plan wins, but its 14-day refund window closes quickly, while a monthly plan can be canceled before each renewal.

Are Coursera certificates worth it to employers? What job ads show
We searched one month of job ads for each role and counted how many name a certificate or skill by its exact phrase. Here are the Google certificates sold on Coursera next to what the same ads ask for. The method is on our methodology page.
| US role (October 2026) | Ads counted | Name the Google certificate on Coursera | Name the main industry certification | Name a core skill we track |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data analyst | 6,094 | Google Data Analytics: 7 ads | Microsoft PL-300: 4 ads | SQL: 42% |
| IT support | 2,745 | Google IT Support: 3 ads | CompTIA A+: 551 ads (20%) | Windows: 43% |
| Security analyst | 8,110 | Google Cybersecurity: 0 ads | CISSP: 338 ads (4.2%) | SIEM: 5.1% |
| Project manager | 59,273 | Google Project Management: 19 ads | PMP: 14,183 ads (24%) | Agile: 12% |
Source: Adzuna API, US job ads collected in October 2026, matched by exact phrase. We track two or three skills per role. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
Three readings stand out. First, the Coursera certificates are close to invisible in ads. The Google Project Management certificate was named in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads, against 14,183 that named the PMP. The PMP is not a fair match for a beginner, since PMI requires two to five years of experience leading projects before the exam, depending on your education. The entry-level PMI credential, the CAPM, was named in 982 of the same ads (1.7%).
Second, data analysis is the one field where no certificate matters much. Microsoft's PL-300 exam does no better than the Google certificate in US data-analyst ads. What separates candidates there is SQL, Python (29%) and Power BI (25%), skills a Coursera course can teach.
Third, in IT support and project management, an exam-based certification fills the slot the Coursera certificate does not. CompTIA A+ appears in 20% of US IT-support ads; see Google IT Support and Google Project Management for the full comparison with A+ and the PMP.
One limit of our count: we match exact names such as "Google Data Analytics." An ad that says "online certificate preferred" without naming a program is not counted, and we do not count ads that mention Coursera itself. Ads that would accept a Coursera certificate exist; ads that ask for one by name are rare.

No country breaks the pattern. In UK ads, Power BI (36%) is named in the data-analyst ads, and Microsoft's PL-300 shows up in 2% of UK ads, a small but real share. In India, none of the 2,413 project-manager ads named the Google Project Management certificate, while 24% named the PMP. Google Cybersecurity appeared in none of the 250 Indian security-analyst ads; CISSP appeared in 45 (18%). In the UK, Google IT Support appears in 1 of 1,286 IT-support ads.
Do employers actually care about Coursera certificates?
Most do not look for them, and some will still read them. A recruiter scanning for SQL finds it whether you learned it on Coursera, at a university or at work. The certificate tells them where you learned; it does not prove you can do the work. The Coursera page for the Google Data Analytics certificate says graduates can apply directly to Google and over 150 US employers, including Deloitte, Target and Verizon, through Google's employer consortium. That is a door into applications, not a hiring promise.
Two vendor figures need context. Google says 75% of its certificate graduates report a positive career outcome (a new job, promotion or raise) within six months, from Google's own 2022 survey of graduates, who are motivated job seekers to begin with. The same page cites a $97,000 median entry-level salary for data analytics in the US, drawn from Lightcast job-posting data; an r/coursera post from January 2026 calls that kind of figure unrealistic. For pay by role, see our data-analyst role page and the Google Career Certificates overview.
Does a Coursera certificate have value on a resume?
Some. Put it under "Courses" or "Training," name the skills it taught, and link one project you built during it. A line like "Google Data Analytics Certificate (Coursera): SQL, spreadsheets, Tableau; capstone analysis of bike-share data" gives a recruiter the keyword and the evidence. On its own, the certificate name adds little, because, as our job-ad counts show, almost no ad searches for it.
Can Coursera get you a job?
Not by itself. Many ads also ask for a degree or years of experience, and a certificate does not replace either; see what entry-level ads ask for on our data analyst role page. You can learn on Coursera the skills that job ads list, and that helps. Landing a job with just a Coursera certificate and nothing to show for it is unlikely, judging by our data. What works better, based on the ads: pick the role first, read 20 ads for it, learn the three or four skills they repeat, and build one project for each skill, something you can talk about in an interview. A Coursera program is a reasonable way to cover the learning part.

|---|---|---|
| SQL | 2,577 | 42% |
| Python | 1,788 | 29% |

| Google Data Analytics | 7 | 7 of 6,094 |

Is the Coursera cybersecurity certificate worth it?
As training, possibly; as a credential, our data says no. Google Cybersecurity was named in none of the 8,110 US security-analyst ads in October 2026, while CISSP appeared in 4.2% and CompTIA Security+ in 112 ads. That Security+ figure is a floor: Adzuna's search drops the "+" sign, so we count the phrase "CompTIA Security" and miss ads that write only Security+. CISSP requires five years of work experience before you can hold it (ISC2), so it is not a first-job credential. If you take a Coursera security course, use it to prepare for an exam the ads name. Compare Google Cybersecurity and the IBM Cybersecurity Analyst certificate on their own pages.
Is a Coursera Microsoft certification worth it?
A Microsoft Professional Certificate on Coursera is a course, not a Microsoft certification. The certification is a separate proctored exam, such as PL-300 for Power BI. Coursera lists the exam at $165 and says learners who complete the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Professional Certificate get a 50% discount voucher for it. For a job seeker, that voucher and the exam it pays for are worth more than the course certificate. In UK data-analyst ads, PL-300 appears in 2%, more often than any Google certificate.
Is a Coursera bookkeeping certificate worth it?
We do not yet count bookkeeping job ads, so we have no data on it. The same test applies: open 20 bookkeeping ads in your area and check whether they name the certificate, a software tool or a professional credential, and spend your money on whichever they name most.
Course, Specialization, Professional Certificate or degree: what you get
Coursera sells five kinds of credentials, and the value differs by kind.
| Credential | What it is | Issued by | How you pay (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course Certificate | Proof you finished one course | The university or company that made the course, on Coursera | One-time payment for 180 days of access, or a monthly subscription if the course belongs to a Specialization |
| Specialization | A set of related courses; you get a certificate per course plus one for the set | University or company partner | Monthly subscription; some sold with a one-time payment |
| Professional Certificate | A job-focused set of courses from a company (Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft) | The company | Monthly subscription, often $49 a month |
| University Certificate or MasterTrack | Graduate-level, for-credit programs | The university | Separate tuition; MasterTrack is not in Coursera Plus |
| Degree | A bachelor's or master's degree | The university, which carries the accreditation | University tuition, paid per course or term |

Coursera Professional Certificate vs Specialization. A Professional Certificate is built around one job title, such as data analyst or IT support specialist, and usually comes from a company. A Specialization covers a topic, such as Python for Everybody from the University of Michigan or the Machine Learning Specialization from DeepLearning.AI and Stanford. Employers treat both the same way: as evidence of study, not as a credential they screen for. Pick by syllabus. If a Specialization teaches the exact tool your target ads list, it beats a broader Professional Certificate.
Coursera course vs Specialization. One course is the cheapest test of whether you like a subject. A Specialization adds the certificate for the full set, which looks more complete on a profile, at the cost of more months of subscription.
ACE credit. In April 2024, Coursera said more than 25 Professional Certificates and Specializations carried ACE or European ECTS credit recommendations. The Google Data Analytics certificate, for example, carries a recommendation of up to 12 college credits. Coursera itself notes that "acceptance of credits is always at the sole discretion of the receiving institution." Ask the college you plan to attend before you count on the credit.

Are Coursera degrees worth it?
They are a different product from the certificates. A Coursera degree is the university's own degree, and the university is the accredited institution. The University of London says its online and on-campus routes lead to the same BSc Computer Science, and the degree certificate names the University of London without mentioning Coursera or online study. The University of Illinois iMBA costs $379 per credit hour, $27,288 in total for 72 credit hours.
Whether a Coursera master's or bachelor's degree pays off depends on the degree, not the platform: the university's standing, the price against an on-campus option and whether employers in your country accept online degrees. Some do not accept them for public-sector jobs, and the University of London itself warns that this happens in some countries.
Accreditation: Coursera vs the universities on it
Coursera is a platform, not a university, so it holds no accreditation of its own. The degrees on Coursera are accredited through the universities that award them, under the US system of agencies overseen by the Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The certificates are not accredited at all, and Coursera calls ACE review "not an accreditation." For the country-by-country questions (India, Canada, the UAE and others), see whether Coursera certificates are accredited and valid.

Is Coursera really worth it? What Reddit users report
Reddit threads on the question rank at the top of Google, so we read the recent ones on r/coursera and r/dataanalysis. The themes repeat. The most upvoted post in our sample of r/coursera is titled "The certs are largely worthless in the job market, but I recommend Coursera 10/10." Its author wrote: "I've had coursera certs on my resumes for 4+ months, I'm not going sit here and tell you they are getting me a lot of calls and interviews" (r/coursera, January 2026). The same poster still recommends Coursera as a cheap way to find out which field you like before paying for a degree.
A licensed attorney who took many AI and business courses put it more briefly: "The real value in these courses is skills and knowledge" (r/coursera). A Google Data Analytics graduate answered the job question directly: "Did it get me a job? No Do I bring it up in interviews-yes" (r/coursera). On the Specialization vs Professional Certificate debate, threads reach the same answer as our data: the name of the credential matters less than whether the syllabus matches the job.
The complaints are about money, not teaching quality: the end of free audit, subscriptions that renew, financial aid granted one course at a time and refund windows that close fast. Those are covered in the cost sections above.
Coursera vs edX, Udemy and other platforms
edX still lets you audit most courses for free, with temporary access to the materials but no graded work and no certificate, per its help center. If you only want to learn, that is now a real difference from Coursera; see Coursera vs edX.
Udemy sells individual courses and is now part of the same company: Coursera completed its combination with Udemy on May 11, 2026. Udemy states that it "is not an accredited institution" and that its certificates of completion cannot be used for formal accreditation. Coursera said on the day the deal closed that the two "will continue to operate as separate platforms for now" (Coursera blog); see Coursera vs Udemy.

Questions people ask
Are Coursera certificates worth anything?
They are worth what you learned to earn them, and little as a credential. Of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads we counted in October 2026, 7 named the Google Data Analytics certificate, while 42% asked for SQL (Adzuna). A Coursera certificate is worth something when it comes with skills you can demonstrate, a project you can show, or ACE credit a college agrees to accept.
Do employers take Coursera certificates seriously?
Few employers search for them. The Google IT Support certificate appeared in 3 of 2,745 US IT-support ads in October 2026, against 20% for CompTIA A+ (Adzuna). Recruiters do read a Coursera line as evidence that you study on your own, and Google says graduates of its certificates can apply to Google and over 150 US employers in its consortium. Employers take a Coursera certificate seriously when you can show the skill in an interview or a project.
Is a Coursera certificate enough to get a job?
Rarely on its own. Many ads also ask for a degree or years of experience, which a certificate does not replace. Job ads name skills and, in IT support, cybersecurity and project management, exam-based certifications such as CompTIA A+, CISSP and the PMP. A Coursera certificate helps when it taught you the skills the ads list and you can prove them with work samples. Google's own figure, that 75% of its certificate graduates report a positive career outcome within six months, comes from a survey of its graduates and includes promotions and raises.
Is Coursera still worth it in 2026?
For structured learning, yes, but it costs more to use than before, which is why the question comes up more often now. Since 2025, most courses offer only a free Preview of the first module instead of a full free audit, so learning a whole course now takes a one-time payment, a subscription or approved financial aid. Coursera also completed its combination with Udemy on May 11, 2026, and said there were no changes to Coursera subscriptions or pricing at that point. In US list prices, a Google Professional Certificate costs $49 a month and Coursera Plus $59 a month or $399 a year.
What are the disadvantages of Coursera?
Five come up most: employers rarely name its certificates in job ads; the free audit option has been replaced by a one-module Preview; financial aid is granted course by course, not for a whole program; subscriptions renew until you cancel, and there is no refund after a monthly trial ends; and Coursera Plus does not include degrees, MasterTrack programs and some certificates, so check the Coursera Plus badge before you buy.
Are certificates from Coursera recognized?
It depends on who is asked to recognize them. Employers treat them as evidence of study. Colleges may accept ACE credit recommendations for some programs, at their own discretion. Degrees on Coursera are recognized as the awarding university's degrees, but the University of London notes that "in some countries, qualifications earned by online and flexible learning may not be recognised by certain authorities or regulators for the purposes of public sector employment or further study." See whether Coursera certificates are accredited and valid.
Why is Coursera falling?
The question usually refers to Coursera's share price. The stock fell 11.6% on April 24, 2026, after first-quarter earnings per share came in one cent short of the market's target, and was down about 28% for the year at that point (Motley Fool). The same report tied the drop to concerns about softer pricing power and disruption from AI. The share price says nothing about the quality of a given course or certificate.
Do you have to pay for a Coursera certificate?
Yes. Certificates require a paid course, a subscription (a single program or Coursera Plus) or approved financial aid. Preview mode, the free option, opens the first module of a course and does not lead to a certificate. On a monthly subscription, the certificate is issued only after the free trial ends and the first payment goes through.
How much does Coursera pay instructors?
Coursera pays the content creators behind its courses, the universities and companies that are its partners. Its 2025 annual report says these fees are typically a percentage of the net revenue from each creator's content, and that content costs came to 38.6% of Consumer segment revenue in 2025. The report does not say how partners share that money with individual instructors.
