Is Coursera Plus worth it? Prices, break-even and refund rules
Coursera Plus is worth it when two programs that Plus covers run in the same months, or when one program costs more than $59 a month. The annual plan ($399) costs less than Plus monthly from month 7. In October 2026, google data analytics appeared in 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads (Adzuna job ads).
Coursera Plus is the all-access subscription from Coursera, the online course platform. One monthly or annual fee covers more than 10,000 courses, Projects (short hands-on exercises), Specializations and Professional Certificate programs, with no limit on how many certificates you earn (Coursera Plus page, checked October 6, 2026). A Specialization is a series of related courses on one topic. A Professional Certificate is a job-focused series of courses. Both end in a Coursera certificate, which is not a certification: a certification is a credential you earn by passing a supervised exam.
Whether Coursera as a whole deserves your time and money is the subject of our Coursera page. Here we look only at the Plus plan: what it costs, when it beats paying per program, what it leaves out and how its billing works.
No chart here yet: our job-ad export (October 2026) and fact checks have no figures for Coursera Plus that we could chart. Charts appear once checked data arrives.

What does Coursera Plus cost in 2026?
In the US, Coursera Plus costs $59 a month or $399 a year at list price. The alternative for a single program is a subscription to that program alone, which Coursera lists at $49 to $79 a month.
| Plan | US list price | What it covers | When billing stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coursera Plus, monthly | $59 a month, after a seven-day free trial | Over 90% of the Coursera catalog, unlimited certificates | Only when you cancel |
| Coursera Plus, annual | $399 a year, full refund if canceled within 14 days | The same as the monthly plan | Renews every 12 months until you cancel |
| One Specialization or Professional Certificate | $49 to $79 a month | Every course in that program | Ends on its own when you earn the program's certificate |

On the annual plan, you can get the full $399 back if you cancel within 14 days of the original payment. Prices are set by country. Coursera's help center says monthly prices can change with promotions, and that learners in India currently have only the monthly subscription option. When you work out the break-even point, the month where one plan stops costing more than another, use the price your own account shows.
Coursera Plus vs Professional Certificates and Specializations: which costs less?
It depends on the program's price and on whether your programs overlap. Coursera lists single programs at $49 to $79 a month; we did not check the price of each program. At $49 a month, a program's own subscription costs $10 a month less than Plus monthly; at $79 a month, it costs $20 a month more. Two included programs studied in the same months favor Plus monthly, and a long stretch of study favors the annual plan. Our Coursera Plus vs Coursera comparison works through more scenarios.
| Months you pay | One program at $49 a month | One program at $79 a month | Coursera Plus monthly ($59) | Coursera Plus annual ($399) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 × $49 = $147 | 3 × $79 = $237 | 3 × $59 = $177 | $399 |
| 6 | 6 × $49 = $294 | 6 × $79 = $474 | 6 × $59 = $354 | $399 |
| 9 | 9 × $49 = $441 | 9 × $79 = $711 | 9 × $59 = $531 | $399 |
| 12 | 12 × $49 = $588 | 12 × $79 = $948 | 12 × $59 = $708 | $399 |
Source: Coursera US list prices checked October 6, 2026; the sums are ours and leave out promotional prices. Every column assumes you pay for each month you study. The single-program columns are a ceiling, because that subscription stops when you earn the certificate. The Plus monthly rows assume you pay from day one; the seven-day free trial can shift the first charge by a week. The annual column covers one year; a second year adds another $399 at renewal.
Over 12 months, the annual plan saves $309 against Plus monthly ($708 − $399). At US list prices checked October 6, 2026, the annual plan's $399 costs less than:
- Plus monthly from month 7 of study: six months come to $354 (less than $399), seven to $413 (more).
- A $49 program from month 9 of study: eight months come to $392 (less than $399), nine to $441 (more).
- A $79 program from month 6 of study: five months come to $395 (less than $399), six to $474 (more).
If you expect to pay for fewer months than that (up to 6, 8 or 5 months), paying month by month costs less.
Two programs at once change the math. Two $49 subscriptions running side by side cost $98 a month, against $59 for Plus monthly. Plus then saves $39 for every month both programs run, as long as both are included in Plus (look for the "Included with Coursera Plus" badge on each program page). If you take programs one after another at $49 a month each, Plus monthly saves nothing; the annual plan saves money from month 9 of total study time (9 × $49 = $441). If Plus does not include a program, its own subscription is the only way to subscribe to it, and this math does not apply.
A program finished in three months on its own subscription costs $147 at $49 a month, and that subscription ends by itself when you earn the certificate.
Can you pay monthly for Coursera Plus, or is annual better?
Pay monthly unless you are sure you will study for 7 months or more in the next year: from month 7 the annual plan costs less than Plus monthly (7 × $59 = $413). If the alternative is a $49 program, the annual plan costs less from month 9 (9 × $49 = $441). The monthly plan starts with a seven-day free trial, and you can cancel before any renewal, but once the first monthly payment goes through there is no refund (refund policies). The annual plan can be refunded in full within 14 days; after those 14 days the year is paid for, and Coursera's Terms of Use say renewal charges on annual plans are not refunded.
The trial does not hand out free certificates. On the monthly plan, Coursera issues no certificate until your first payment goes through, and each subscription gets one free trial only (free trial rules, checked October 6, 2026).
What does Coursera Plus include, and what is left out?
Coursera says Plus opens over 90% of its catalog, with no cap on courses or certificates (help center). Left out are degrees, MasterTrack Certificate programs (university programs sold separately) and certain courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates. Coursera adds that for-credit content, such as degree courses and some Professional Certificates, may not be included.
The reason lies with Coursera's partners. A university or company must agree before its content goes into Plus, and when several partners offer the same content, all of them must agree (why content is excluded). Before you pay, open the enrollment page of each program you plan to take and look for the badge that says "Included with Coursera Plus." If the badge is missing, Plus does not cover that program.
One r/coursera poster put the frustration this way: "What is the point of plus if courses included in plus are charged for anyway?" (r/coursera). Checking the badge for every program on your list is the way to avoid that surprise.
Coursera Plus vs regular, Premium and free: which plan is which?
"Regular" on Coursera means paying for one thing at a time: a one-time payment for a single course (its price shows on the course page), or a monthly subscription to one Specialization or Professional Certificate. When a program page shows a button such as "Subscribe to this Specialization," it offers a subscription to that one Specialization or Professional Certificate, the single-program option at $49 to $79 a month. It covers one program and stops billing when you earn its certificate; Coursera Plus covers the included catalog and keeps billing.
Free now means Preview mode. Coursera's enrollment options article says Preview opens the first module of most courses, including the graded work in it, and locks the rest. Preview does not lead to a certificate. Some courses can also be taken in full for free, without a certificate (help center, checked October 3, 2026).
The Coursera Plus page we checked lists no Premium plan; its plan comparison sets individual courses and programs next to Coursera Plus. If a checkout screen offers a Premium tier, compare its price and its coverage with the plans on this page before you pay.
Financial aid is the other low-cost route, and it does not mix well with a trial. Aid is granted course by course after a written application of at least 150 words, the review takes up to 16 days, and starting a free trial cancels a pending application (financial aid, checked October 3, 2026). The monthly Coursera Plus plan starts with a free trial, so apply for aid first if you think you qualify.
Do employers care about certificates earned on Coursera?
Job ads show how often employers name them. For each role, we take one month of job ads from Adzuna, a job-ad search site, keep the ads that match the role title and count those whose text contains a certificate's exact name. Here are the counts for four Google certificates sold on Coursera that we track, in US ads for the role each one trains for. The badge on each enrollment page shows whether that certificate is included in Coursera Plus; we did not check this.
- Data analyst: the phrase
google data analyticsappeared in 7 of the 6,094 of 6,094 US ads for the title data analyst in October 2026. - IT support: the phrase
google it supportappeared in 3 of the 2,745 of 2,745 US ads for the title IT support in October 2026. - Project management: the phrase
google project managementappeared in 19 of the 59,273 of 59,273 US ads for the title project manager in October 2026. - Cybersecurity: the phrase
google cybersecurityappeared in none of the 8,110 of 8,110 US ads for the title security analyst in October 2026.
Source: Adzuna API, US job ads collected in October 2026, matched by role title and exact phrase. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
Each count is a minimum, and each role has its own total, so read every count against the total in the same line. An ad that asks for a "Google Career Certificate" without naming the program, or for any "online certificate," does not contain the phrase and is not counted; an ad that writes "Google Data Analytics Certificate" contains it and is counted. Our methodology page explains how we collect the ads.
In our view, a Coursera Plus subscription buys learning, so the case for Plus rests on cost and on what you learn. The counts above show how often US ads for these four roles name each certificate. For the skills and exam-based certifications that US job ads for these roles name instead, see our Coursera page and the pages for Google Data Analytics, Google IT Support, Google Project Management and Google Cybersecurity.
What happens if you cancel Coursera Plus, or forget to?
Coursera Plus keeps billing until you cancel it, and a canceled plan stays open until the end of the period you paid for. That is the main difference from a single-program subscription, which ends on its own once you earn the program's certificate; Coursera says Plus subscriptions "will not auto-cancel" (canceling a subscription).
The rules that decide what you pay and keep:
- Both plans renew automatically for a period of the same length, a month or a year, until you cancel (Terms of Use).
- Starting Coursera Plus does not cancel a Specialization subscription you already have. Cancel the old one yourself, or you pay for both; your course progress is kept.
- To cancel, go to Purchases, open the Subscriptions tab and choose Cancel subscription.
- When the paid period ends, your courses switch to Preview mode. Progress and grades are saved, and certificates you earned stay in your Certificates tab.
- An annual refund inside the 14 days is a full refund, but you lose access to any certificate you completed in that window, and the money can take up to 10 business days to arrive (annual refund).
Set a calendar reminder for the week before each renewal date, monthly or annual.
Is Coursera Plus worth it? What Reddit posters report
One r/coursera poster wrote: "I accidentally forgot to cancel my annual Coursera Plus subscription, and the $399 auto-renewal charge went through about 3 weeks ago" (r/coursera). Under Coursera's terms, that renewal charge is not refundable.
Another poster passed on what they had been told: "the 14-day refund policy I had found only applies to Coursera Plus Annual, and that monthly subscriptions generally aren't refundable after the free trial ends" (r/coursera). That matches Coursera's refund page.
On the value side, one poster finished the set of courses needed for a certification and canceled Plus right after (r/coursera). That is the pattern the break-even math rewards: a short burst of study, then cancel. Reddit posts are personal accounts; where they differ from Coursera's terms, the terms decide.
Is a Coursera Plus subscription worth it for you?
Plus monthly is worth it when two included programs run in the same months, or when your one program costs more than $59 a month. The annual plan ($399) costs less than Plus monthly from month 7 of study (7 × $59 = $413), less than a $49 program from month 9 (9 × $49 = $441) and less than a $79 program from month 6 (6 × $79 = $474). For a single $49 program, skip Plus only if you will finish within 8 months; for up to 8 months of study, a $49 program's own subscription costs less than the annual plan (8 × $49 = $392). A $79 program costs less than the annual plan only up to 5 months of study (5 × $79 = $395), and more than Plus monthly in every month.
- Two programs in parallel, both with the Coursera Plus badge: Plus monthly at $59 against $98 for two $49 subscriptions.
- One badged program priced at $79 a month: Plus monthly costs $20 a month less, but it does not stop billing when you finish.
- A year of study across several programs: the annual plan at $399; you can get all of it back if you cancel within 14 days.
- One program at $49 a month, finished within 8 months: its own subscription, which ends by itself when you earn the certificate. From month 9, the annual plan costs less.
- Testing a subject: Preview mode, which is free and opens the first module.
- Hoping for financial aid: apply before you start any trial.
- A degree or a MasterTrack program: Coursera Plus does not include either.
How does Coursera Plus compare with Udemy and other subscriptions?
Coursera completed its combination with Udemy on May 11, 2026. On that date it said the two would run as separate platforms for now, with no changes to Coursera subscriptions or pricing (Coursera blog). Our Coursera Plus vs Udemy comparison sets the two buying models side by side, and Coursera Plus vs Coursera works through paying per program in more scenarios. Questions people ask
What are the benefits of Coursera Plus?
Coursera Plus gives you access to more than 10,000 courses, Projects, Specializations and Professional Certificate programs for one fee, with no limit on the certificates you earn (Coursera, checked October 6, 2026). In the US it costs $59 a month or $399 a year. It saves money when two programs included in Plus run in the same months, or when your one program costs more than $59 a month. The annual plan ($399) costs less than Plus monthly from month 7 of study (6 × $59 = $354, 7 × $59 = $413) and less than a $49 single-program subscription from month 9 (8 × $49 = $392, 9 × $49 = $441). So for a $49 program, its own subscription costs less than the annual plan only for up to 8 months of study. It also ends on its own when you earn the certificate, while Coursera Plus keeps billing until you cancel.
Are Coursera certificates worth anything?
A Coursera certificate shows that you completed a course or program; it is not an exam-based certification. In October 2026, the exact phrase google data analytics appeared in 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads we counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Check that count against the ads for the job you want before you pay for a certificate.
Do employers take Coursera certificates seriously?
Job ads show how often employers name them. In October 2026, the exact phrase google it support appeared in 3 of the 2,745 US IT-support ads we counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. An ad count shows whether an employer names a certificate, not how it weighs one. In our view, a Coursera Plus subscription makes certificates cheaper to collect; it does not change how an employer reads them.
Is Coursera still worth it in 2026?
For structured learning, it can be, though it costs more to try than it used to. Coursera now offers only the first module of most courses for free, in Preview mode and without a certificate, so finishing a course takes a payment, a subscription or approved financial aid (Coursera help center, checked October 3, 2026). In the US, Coursera Plus lists at $59 a month or $399 a year, and a single Specialization or Professional Certificate at $49 to $79 a month (Coursera, checked October 6, 2026). Coursera said there were no changes to its subscriptions or pricing when it completed its combination with Udemy on May 11, 2026. Our Coursera page weighs the platform as a whole.
Why is Coursera falling?
If the question is about Coursera's share price, the stock does not change what the Coursera Plus subscription costs or includes. In the US, Coursera Plus listed at $59 a month or $399 a year when we checked on October 6, 2026, with a seven-day free trial on the monthly plan and a 14-day full-refund window on the annual one. Our Coursera page covers the April 2026 share drop.
Can you get a refund on Coursera Plus?
Only on the annual Coursera Plus plan, and only if you cancel within 14 days of the original payment. Coursera then cancels the membership, switches your courses to Preview mode and removes access to any certificate earned in those 14 days; the refund can take up to 10 business days. The monthly plan has a seven-day free trial and no refund once the first payment goes through, and renewal charges on annual plans are not refunded (Coursera Terms of Use and help center, checked October 6, 2026).
Does Coursera Plus cancel automatically when you finish a certificate?
No. A subscription to a single Specialization or Professional Certificate ends on its own once you earn that certificate, but Coursera says Coursera Plus subscriptions will not auto-cancel. Monthly and annual plans renew for the same length until you cancel under Purchases, then Subscriptions, then Cancel subscription. Your progress, grades and earned certificates stay in your account after you cancel (Coursera help center, checked October 6, 2026).
