IBM AI certificates: is the AI Engineering one worth it?
0 of 23,274 AI engineer job ads in the United States name the IBM AI Engineering (Adzuna, October 2026)
Of the IBM AI certificates, the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate is worth it if you already write Python, a programming language, and want guided practice building AI models (programs trained on data). IBM offers it on Coursera, an online course platform, as 13 courses at Intermediate level, one step above Beginner.
Coursera estimates 4 months at 10 hours a week, which comes to about $236 at the reported $59 monthly price of Coursera Plus, its course subscription (program page checked October 7, 2026; price from an October 3 search summary). It is a course certificate: proof that you finished the 13 courses. We found no exam requirement on the program page.
In October 2026, the phrase ibm ai engineering appeared in none of the 23,274 US AI-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. AI engineers are the people who build and run AI systems. The job-ads section below explains what that count does and does not show.
Beginners who cannot yet write Python should start with one of IBM's Beginner programs, which we compare in the section on other IBM AI certificates.

Is the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate worth it?
Yes, the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate is worth it for a learner who already codes in Python and wants a structured route through machine learning and deep learning. Machine learning is software that learns patterns from data; deep learning is machine learning that uses neural networks, programs loosely modeled on how brain cells connect. That is our judgment, based on what Coursera lists: the program covers both, then adds seven courses on generative AI (AI that writes text or makes images from instructions).
The program is a poor fit for two readers. In our judgment, a complete beginner will struggle, because Coursera's page asks for "Working knowledge of Python and Jupyter Notebooks." A Jupyter Notebook is a browser tool where you write and run code step by step. And anyone who hopes job ads will ask for this exact certificate by name should read the next section first.
What you get is practice. Coursera lists skills such as computer vision (AI that reads images) and natural language processing, or NLP (AI that works with text). It also lists fine-tuning (further training an existing model on new data) and retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG (making an AI model answer from documents you supply).
What do AI-engineer job ads say about IBM AI certificates?
Adzuna data for October 2026 showed the phrase ibm ai engineering in none of the 23,274 US AI-engineer ads and none of the 1,146 UK AI-engineer ads.
This is a phrase count: we start from the AI-engineer ads in Adzuna's data, then count the ads whose text contains that exact phrase. An ad that says IBM certificate, names IBM in other words or simply lists AI skills is not counted. So the result shows only that this exact wording was absent from those ads in that month. It does not show that employers ignore the certificate.
For the skills that US AI-engineer ads do name, see our AI-engineer role page. We have one month of data, so we cannot say how the count changes over time.
What does the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate cover?
The 13 courses move from classic machine learning to deep learning, then to generative AI. Coursera gives each course its own hour estimate.
Some terms in the course titles: Gen AI is short for generative AI. Keras, TensorFlow and PyTorch are code libraries (ready-made code you reuse) for building neural networks. LLMs (large language models) are the AI systems behind chat tools. Transformers are the model design behind LLMs. LangChain is a library for connecting LLMs to other software. An AI agent is a program that uses an LLM to carry out a task in several steps. Course 6 is a capstone, a final project that pulls the earlier courses together.
| Course | Title as listed by Coursera | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Machine Learning with Python | 20 |
| 2 | Introduction to Deep Learning & Neural Networks with Keras | 10 |
| 3 | Deep Learning with Keras and Tensorflow | 23 |
| 4 | Introduction to Neural Networks and PyTorch | 19 |
| 5 | Deep Learning with PyTorch | 21 |
| 6 | AI Capstone Project with Deep Learning | 15 |
| 7 | Generative AI and LLMs: Architecture and Data Preparation | 6 |
| 8 | Gen AI Foundational Models for NLP & Language Understanding | 10 |
| 9 | Generative AI Language Modeling with Transformers | 9 |
| 10 | Generative AI Engineering and Fine-Tuning Transformers | 8 |
| 11 | Generative AI Advanced Fine-Tuning for LLMs | 9 |
| 12 | Fundamentals of AI Agents Using RAG and LangChain | 9 |
| 13 | Project: Generative AI Applications with RAG and LangChain | 9 |
| Total | 168 |
Source: Coursera program page (see Sources). The 168-hour total is our sum of Coursera's per-course figures.
Courses 1 to 6 add up to 108 hours and courses 7 to 13 to 60, by our sum. So about two-thirds of the listed time goes to machine learning and deep learning, and the rest to generative AI.
How hard is the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate?
The IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate is pitched above beginner level: Coursera rates it Intermediate. Coursera's page also lists high-school math as expected background and says IBM recommends finishing its IBM Data Science or IBM Applied AI certificate first (we did not open those two programs).
Test your Python before you pay (step 1 under Where should you start). We have no independent completion or pass rates for this program and do not estimate them.
How long does it take to get the IBM AI Engineering certificate?
Coursera estimates the IBM AI Engineering certificate takes 4 months at 10 hours a week. The per-course hours add up to 168, which at 10 hours a week is about 17 weeks, so the two figures agree.
The program is self-paced (you set your own speed), and the pace sets the bill. At 5 hours a week, 168 hours take about 34 weeks, close to 8 months. Both pace figures are our arithmetic, not Coursera's.
How much does the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate cost?
Expect about $236 for the 4 months Coursera estimates, if Coursera Plus costs $59 a month (see the caveat below). Coursera's program page shows no price of its own for this certificate. It says the program is "Included with Coursera Plus," Coursera's subscription that covers a catalog of courses for a fee. The total below is the monthly fee times the months you stay subscribed.
The $59 is reported, not confirmed: it comes from a summary shown in search results for Coursera's Plus page, recorded October 3, 2026. It was not the figure on the page itself: when we opened Coursera's Plus page on October 7, 2026, it showed 50 euros a month, so the price differs by country. Check the price Coursera shows at checkout before you plan around it.
| Months subscribed | Calculation | Total at $59 a month |
|---|---|---|
| 4 (Coursera's estimate, 10 hours a week) | $59 × 4 | $236 |
| 6 (a slower pace) | $59 × 6 | $354 |
| 8 (about 5 hours a week) | $59 × 8 | $472 |

If you pay month by month, finishing in fewer months lowers the total. For how Plus works across programs, read our Coursera Plus review. Our Coursera review covers how the platform's certificates and subscriptions work in general.
Can you get the IBM AI Engineering certificate free?
Financial aid is the one route we can name: the program page lists it as available. Financial aid is Coursera's reduced or waived fee for learners who cannot pay. The same page shows an "Enroll for free" button; we did not verify what free enrollment includes for this program, and we found no free-trial length (a free trial is a short period of free access) on the page.
Is the IBM AI Engineering certificate recognized?
IBM issues it and Coursera sells it, but we found no outside body that approves it. A summary of Coursera's program page says that on completion you earn an IBM badge, a digital badge (an online image that proves you earned it), and that you can share the certificate on LinkedIn.
Accreditation means an independent body officially approves a school or program, and we found none for this program. Coursera's page also states no credit recommendation from the American Council on Education (ACE), a US body that reviews courses for college credit. Our page on Coursera accreditation explains how credit differs from accreditation. Coursera's page, as summarized for us, mentions university credit only for learners already admitted to a degree program, who may be able to ask the school to count these courses toward the degree.
As for employers, IBM's training blog, as summarized for us, describes its AI programs as aligned with real-world skills and roles employers seek. This is the seller's own description. Our job-ad count is the independent check.
Which other IBM AI certificates are there?
IBM offers several AI programs on Coursera at different levels, and the best one depends on whether you already write code, so we do not rank them. We read four Coursera program pages on October 7, 2026; some details reached us through page summaries or search results, so check Coursera for the current figures before you pay.
| Program | Courses | Level | Coursera's time estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate | 13 | Intermediate | 4 months at 10 hours a week |
| IBM Generative AI Engineering Professional Certificate | 16 | Beginner | 6 months at 6 hours a week |
| IBM AI Developer Professional Certificate | 10 | Beginner | about 6 months at 4 hours a week |
| IBM RAG and Agentic AI Professional Certificate | 10 | Advanced | 8 weeks at 3 hours a week |
Source: Coursera program pages (see Sources). Levels are Coursera's labels for course difficulty. Agentic AI means AI that plans and carries out tasks in steps.
IBM's own training blog gives some different durations, for example 4 months for Generative AI Engineering. We use Coursera's figures because Coursera sells the programs. The blog lists further IBM programs that we did not open.
We could not verify which AI badges IBM offers through SkillsBuild, IBM's separate learning catalog, so we do not cover them.
Generative AI Engineering vs AI Engineering: why two programs?
One poster on r/coursera, a Coursera discussion group on the site Reddit, asked why IBM runs both (post). The difference is level: Generative AI Engineering is Beginner and lists only basic computer skills as a requirement. AI Engineering is Intermediate, expects Python and spends its first six courses on machine learning and deep learning.
Who each IBM program suits
Coursera's estimate for the AI Developer certificate assumes about 4 hours a week, so it fits a beginner with little spare time. Between the two Beginner options, AI Developer has fewer courses (10) and a lower weekly load (4 hours); Generative AI Engineering is longer (16 courses, 6 hours a week) and fits a beginner who wants to build generative AI tools. AI Engineering fits someone who already codes and wants the deep-learning grounding. RAG and Agentic AI is a short Advanced program; Coursera says it needs working knowledge of Python.
For AI courses from other vendors, our guide to AI certifications sets out levels and prices side by side. For AI at office work with no coding, the Google AI Professional Certificate is a Beginner option.
What salary can you expect with the IBM AI Engineering certificate?
We found no salary data for holders of the IBM AI Engineering certificate, so we give no figure. Pay is set by the job, and we cannot separate the effect of one course.
As a reference only, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, puts the 2025 median pay (half of workers earn more, half less) of computer and information research scientists at $140,300 a year. It is a research occupation whose typical entry education is a master's degree, so read it as the pay of an occupation, not of a certificate.
Is the IBM AI Engineering certificate worth it, according to Reddit?
Our Reddit sample gives no verdict yet: the four Reddit posts we collected about this certificate ask whether it pays off, and none gives a first-hand report of study time or employer reaction. One poster on r/coursera asked whether the program helps with learning AI agents (post). Treat any claim there as unverified and check it against Coursera's current program page.
Where should you start if you have no target job yet?
Start by testing your Python, because the level decides which IBM program fits.
- Try a short task in Python: load a small data file and write a short piece of reusable code (a function). If you cannot do it yet, choose the AI Developer or Generative AI Engineering certificate instead; Coursera rates both Beginner.
- If you can, decide how many hours a week you can give. Your pace sets how many months of fees you pay, as the time and cost sections show.
- Apply for financial aid on the program page before you subscribe, if the cost would be hard to carry. Otherwise subscribe and note the date of the next monthly charge.
- Treat Course 1, Machine Learning with Python, as your test: Coursera lists 20 of the 168 hours for it. Time how long it takes you, then multiply by 8 (168 hours is about 8 times 20). That shows your full months and cost at your pace. If Course 1 feels too hard, switch to a Beginner program before a second month of fees.
- To see what employers want, open our AI-engineer role page and read the skills US ads name. You do not need a target job to do this.
