Is Coursera accredited? What its degrees, certificates and ACE credit count for

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

Our answer to "is Coursera accredited" is no, in our reading: it is a platform, not an accredited school (one reviewed for quality by an independent body). Per Coursera, its degrees come from accredited partner universities; its certificates prove you finished a course. Some carry an American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation: advice on college credits.

First, write down what you want the credential for: a degree, college credit or a job. For a degree, look up the awarding university's accreditation. For college credit, pick a college you might attend and ask it. For a job, open five current ads for the role you want and note whether they ask for a degree, a named certificate or only skills.

No chart here yet: our job-ad export (October 2026) and fact checks have no figures for Coursera that we could chart. Charts appear once checked data arrives.

Is Coursera accredited as a school?

In our reading, no. Coursera is a platform that hosts courses and degrees made by universities and companies, and none of the Coursera pages we read on October 6, 2026, describes Coursera itself as accredited. Coursera's own article defines accreditation as a "review of the quality of higher education institutions and programs" (Coursera, last updated April 11, 2026). The organizations that carry out that review are called accreditors.

In the US, accreditors are private associations that set quality criteria and send peer reviewers to evaluate schools. The US Department of Education states that it "does not accredit educational institutions and/or programs." It oversees the accreditors instead, and what they report goes into DAPIP, the Department's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs (postsecondary means colleges and universities). DAPIP itself notes that a listing is not an endorsement (DAPIP, checked October 6, 2026).

One outside review we found: since April 17, 2024, ACE has listed Coursera as an ACE Authorized Instructional Platform (Coursera blog). Coursera's accreditation article says an ACE evaluation is not an accreditation, so we read this as a review of how courses are built and tested, not as school accreditation. The same blog mentions ECTS (the European credit system) recommendations for some programs; we did not check which programs carry one today.

Which Coursera credentials are accredited, have a credit recommendation or neither?

Per Coursera, degrees carry the awarding university's accreditation. Some certificates carry a credit recommendation, and for the rest we found no accreditation or recommendation.

A few terms in the table need explaining. A Specialization is a series of related courses on one topic. A Professional Certificate is a job-focused series of courses from a company such as Google, IBM or Meta. A transcript is your official record of credits, and the registrar is the college office that records credits.

Coursera's ACE FAQ describes what a program on the list gives you: "a certificate of completion with a credit recommendation." MasterTrack is a university-credit program on Coursera, and Coursera Plus excludes it. We did not check how MasterTrack programs are credited, so ask the university about credit.

Is a Coursera degree accredited and valid?

Per Coursera, yes: its degrees are awarded by accredited university partners, and the university's accreditor decides what that means. Coursera's degrees page answers the question in one line: "Coursera online degree programs are awarded by accredited university partners." It adds that accreditation "may support employer recognition and credit transfer, depending on the institution." The page was last updated August 27, 2026, and we checked it on October 6, 2026 (Coursera degrees page). Credit transfer means moving credits you earned at one school to another.

A degree's validity therefore rests on the university, and you check it through that university's accreditor, not through Coursera. The same Coursera page says each university decides, under its own policies, how many pre-approved transfer credits from courses or certificates you took on Coursera may count toward its degree.

Some programs carry a second, narrower review called programmatic accreditation, which covers one school or program inside a university. According to the University of Illinois iMBA page on Coursera, the program's 18 courses (72 credit hours, the college's unit of course workload) are accredited by AACSB, a business-school accreditor (iMBA page, checked October 6, 2026). That is the business school's accreditation. For the university's institutional accreditor (the body that reviews the whole university), look the university up in DAPIP. We read only this page and the degrees page, so we did not check other partners.

Degrees are not included in Coursera Plus, Coursera's all-access subscription (Coursera Plus page, checked October 6, 2026). Prices and plans are on our Coursera review and our Coursera Plus page.

Are Coursera degrees recognized outside the US?

That depends on the country, because US accreditation does not by itself tell a foreign regulator anything. The section on whether a Coursera certificate is valid internationally says who to ask.

Do Coursera certificates count for college credit?

Some can, if a college agrees. An ACE credit recommendation is advice on how many college credits the content is worth; it is not credit you already hold.

Coursera's Learner Help Center keeps the list of programs with a recommendation. On October 6, 2026, the list had 50 rows, recommending from 1 to 18 credits (ACE credit recommendation FAQs). Each row has effective dates: the window in which you must finish the program for the recommendation to apply. Coursera's rule is direct: "You must complete the ACE-approved learning content during the effective dates for the ACE credit recommendation."

Program on Coursera Recommended credits Effective dates
Google Project Management 10 October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2027
Google IT Automation with Python 16 October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2028
Google UX Design 11 October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2027

Google AI Professional Certificate 1 April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2029
IBM Data Science 12 Ends September 30, 2027
IBM Cybersecurity Analyst 15 Ends September 30, 2027

Source: Coursera Learner Help Center, ACE credit recommendation FAQs, checked October 6, 2026. The list changes; read the row for your program on the day you enroll.

Nine rows on the same list had effective dates that had already ended when we checked. Google Advanced Data Analytics, Google Business Intelligence and Google Cybersecurity ended on September 20, 2026. Six Meta programs ended on September 30, 2026: Android Developer, Back-End Developer, Database Engineer, Front-End Developer, Marketing Analytics and iOS Developer. All nine were still listed on October 6, 2026. If you finish one of them after its end date, you fall outside the window Coursera sets, unless new dates are added.

If you do finish within the dates, Coursera says you can request an official transcript through Credly, a digital-badge site, and send it to a college. To receive the ACE-endorsed badge, you must also verify your identity. ACE runs its own lookup, the National Guide, where you can search its recommendations by organization or course. Check your program's row there as well as on Coursera's list. On October 6, 2026, figures could differ between sources: Google Data Analytics, for example, showed 13 credits on Coursera's list but up to 12 on its Coursera program page.

Is a Coursera certificate recognized by a university for credit?

Only if that university says yes. Coursera's ACE FAQ is clear on this: "The decision to accept specific credit recommendations is up to each accredited institution." The FAQ also names what shapes the decision: how well the skills match your degree, the other credits you transfer, the school's policies and case-by-case review. It does not promise a set number of credits. Coursera also writes that "over 440 accredited institutions" have historically recognized ACE-recommended content; that is Coursera's figure, not broken down by program, so it is not your odds of acceptance.

Before you enroll for credit, email the registrar (the college office that records credits) of the college you plan to attend. Give the program's exact name, its ACE recommendation and its effective dates, and ask how many credits the college would grant and toward which requirement.

Is a Coursera certificate valid for jobs? Do employers recognize it?

Employers can recognize it as evidence of training: no accreditor rules on job applications, and each employer reads the certificate as it chooses. To see how often ads ask for these certificates by name, we count job ads from Adzuna, a job-ad search site. For each role we take one month of ads, keep those that match the role title and count the ones that contain the certificate's English phrase (a close match for the Google Career Certificates), shown here in code style. Each count is a minimum: an ad that names the program another way, or in another language, is not counted, and a count of none holds only for the phrase we searched. The method is on our methodology page.

  • US security analysts: the phrase ibm cybersecurity analyst professional certificate appeared in none of the 8,110 US security-analyst ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
  • US IT support: the phrase google it automation appeared in none of the 2,745 US IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
  • US IT support: the phrase google career certificate appeared in none of the 2,745 US IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
  • UK IT support: the phrase google it support appeared in one of the 1,286 UK IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).

Source: Adzuna API, job ads collected in October 2026, matched by role title and phrase. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

These counts show only whether an ad asks for the certificate by name, not whether an employer would welcome a candidate who has one; an ad that asks for "a relevant certificate" is not counted. For the skills and exam-based certifications that ads for these roles name, see our pages on IBM Cybersecurity Analyst, Google IT Support, Google IT Automation with Python and the Google Career Certificates.

Is a Coursera certificate valid for jobs in India?

No rule we found settles it, so each Indian employer decides what a certificate is worth. These are our counts of Indian ads that name, by their English phrase, four Google certificates sold on Coursera.

  • IT support: the phrase google it support appeared in none of the 259 Indian IT-support ads in October 2026.
  • Data analyst: the phrase google data analytics appeared in 2 of the 1,054 Indian data-analyst ads in October 2026.
  • Project manager: the phrase google project management appeared in none of the 2,413 Indian project-manager ads in October 2026.
  • Security analyst: the phrase google cybersecurity appeared in none of the 250 Indian security-analyst ads in October 2026.

Our pages on Google Data Analytics, Google Project Management and Google Cybersecurity cover those certificates in more detail.

Is a Coursera certificate valid for your resume?

Yes. A certificate of completion is a fair resume line, and it does not need to be accredited to go on one. List it under training or courses: the issuing company or university first, then Coursera as the platform, then the year and the two or three skills it taught. If your program is on Coursera's ACE list and you finished within its dates, you can add "ACE credit recommendation: 10 credits" or the figure shown for your program. Write it as a recommendation, not as credits earned, unless a college has granted them.

Is a Coursera certificate valid or recognized internationally?

There is no single worldwide accreditation to check; each country's authority and each employer decide for themselves. US accreditation does not by itself tell a foreign regulator or employer anything: the Department of Education notes on DAPIP that its recognition of accreditors is limited by law to accreditation within the United States. For degrees, ask the body in your country that recognizes foreign or online degrees. For certificates, we found no government rule that names Coursera, so ask the employer.

Is a Coursera degree or certificate valid in India?

No rule we found settles it. For degrees, check with the Indian regulators before you enroll; for certificates, the employer decides. On December 12, 2023, India's University Grants Commission (UGC), the regulator for universities, issued a public notice. It warned that franchise-style arrangements (a foreign school lending its name to a local partner) with foreign institutions it has not approved carry no UGC recognition (UGC notice). The notice does not name Coursera, so it does not say whether a Coursera degree is valid in India.

The notice points students to two places to check. One is the UGC's DEB website (deb.ugc.ac.in) named in the notice. The other is the list of institutions approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the regulator of technical colleges. Ask the employer or university that will receive your degree as well. For certificates, we found no Indian government rule; the section on jobs in India shows our ad counts.

Is a Coursera certificate valid or recognized in Canada, the UAE, the Philippines, Malaysia, Nigeria or Australia?

We did not verify how Canada, the UAE, the Philippines, Malaysia, Nigeria or Australia treat a Coursera degree or certificate. To have a degree assessed, check with the national higher-education regulator in your country or a credential assessment service (an organization that compares foreign qualifications with local ones). We did not verify these bodies or which one assesses overseas degrees in each country. A certificate is the employer's call. Ask before you enroll, give the university's name and the exact program, and keep the answer in writing.

How can you check a Coursera credential?

Five checks cover it; step 4 depends on the college's reply.

  1. Find the issuer. The program page names the university or company behind it. Coursera is the platform; the issuer is who you check.
  2. For a degree, look up the university. Look the university up in DAPIP and note the accreditor it lists.
  3. For college credit, find the ACE row. Open Coursera's ACE credit recommendation FAQs, find your program, and check that its effective dates cover the date you will finish. Then read the same row in ACE's National Guide.
  4. Email the college's registrar office. Ask the college you plan to attend whether it accepts that recommendation and how many credits it grants.
  5. Outside the US, ask the authority. For a degree, contact the body named in the section on whether a Coursera certificate is valid internationally. For a job, read the employer's current ads for the role.

Is Coursera worth it when accreditation does not matter to you?

Accreditation matters less if you want skills, not a degree. Our Coursera review sets prices against what job ads ask for, and our Coursera Plus page shows when the subscription pays off. For other platforms, see Coursera vs Udemy and our learning platforms hub.

Questions people ask

Is Coursera accredited?

Not as a school, in our reading. Coursera is a platform, and none of the Coursera pages we read on October 6, 2026, says Coursera itself is accredited (reviewed for quality by an independent body called an accreditor). Coursera's degrees page says its online degrees are awarded by accredited university partners, so a degree's accreditation belongs to the university. Course and Professional Certificate (a job-focused series of courses) credentials are certificates of completion. Some carry an American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation, ACE's advice on how many college credits the content is worth, which a college may or may not accept.

Is a Coursera certificate valid?

Yes, as proof that you completed a course or program, which is what it is. We found no source that calls a Coursera certificate an accredited qualification (accredited means reviewed for quality by an independent body called an accreditor). An employer decides what it counts for in a job. A college decides whether to grant credit for programs on Coursera's American Council on Education (ACE) list (ACE is a US higher-education body; its list had 50 rows when we checked on October 6, 2026).

Is Coursera a recognized certificate?

Not as one thing: Coursera is the platform, not the certificate. Its certificates are for courses and programs made by universities and companies such as Google and IBM. For degrees, recognition comes through accreditation (review for quality by an independent body), and Coursera says its degrees are awarded by accredited university partners (Coursera degrees page, checked October 6, 2026). For certificates, each employer decides, and each college decides whether to accept an American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation (ACE's advice on how many college credits the content is worth) where one exists.

Are Coursera certificates worth something?

They are worth the skills you learned and the proof that you finished. We found no source that calls them accredited (reviewed for quality by an independent body), so in our reading they are not a formal qualification on their own. Some programs carried an American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation (ACE's advice on how many college credits the content is worth) on Coursera's list checked October 6, 2026, for example Google Project Management (10 credits) and IBM Data Science (12 credits). A college may turn one into credit toward a degree if it chooses.

Is a Coursera certificate worth anything?

For college credit it can be, if three things hold. The program must be on Coursera's American Council on Education (ACE) list, which gives ACE's advice on how many college credits the content is worth. You must finish it within the effective dates shown there (the window in which a recommendation applies). And the college you apply to must accept the recommendation. On October 6, 2026, the list had 50 rows recommending from 1 to 18 credits, and nine had end dates that had passed. For a job, a certificate is evidence of training that the employer weighs as it sees fit.

Do jobs take Coursera certificates seriously?

Each employer decides for itself; no accreditor (an independent body that reviews schools for quality) rules on it. We count how often job ads name these certificates by their English phrase, which gives a minimum. In October 2026, the phrase google it support appeared in one of the 1,286 UK IT-support ads we counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. A count shows whether an ad asks for the certificate by name. It cannot show whether an employer would welcome a candidate who holds one.

Do employers recognize Coursera certificates?

An employer can read a Coursera certificate as proof that you completed training. We found no source that calls it an accredited qualification (one reviewed for quality by an independent body), so recognition is each employer's choice. In India, the phrase google data analytics appeared in 2 of the 1,054 Indian data-analyst ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna, a job-ad search site). To judge one employer, read its current ads and check whether they name the certificate, the skills it teaches or neither.

What are the disadvantages of Coursera?

On accreditation (review for quality by an independent body), three limits matter. In our reading Coursera is a platform, not an accredited school, and per Coursera the accreditation sits with the partner universities that award its degrees. An American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendation (advice on how many college credits the content is worth), where a program has one, applies only if you finish within its effective dates (the window Coursera lists for it) and a college agrees to accept it. Nine rows on Coursera's ACE list had end dates that had passed when we checked on October 6, 2026. For prices and refund rules, see our Coursera review.

Why is Coursera falling?

If the question is about Coursera's share price, our Coursera review covers the stock's fall in 2026. A share price does not change the status of a credential. A degree on Coursera keeps the accreditation (independent quality review) of the university that awards it, and a program on Coursera's American Council on Education (ACE) list keeps the credit recommendation (ACE's advice on how many college credits the content is worth) shown for the dates listed with it.
