Coursera Plus vs Coursera: is Plus cheaper than paying per program?
Coursera Plus vs Coursera turns on price: the all-access Plus plan is worth it when it costs less than paying per program. If one program costs under $59 a month, buy it alone. Plus wins when two programs with its "Included with Coursera Plus" badge run at once. Past six months, annual Plus costs less than monthly.
A program on Coursera, the online course site, is a Specialization or a Professional Certificate, each a series of related courses. Both end in a Coursera certificate, which shows you finished the work; it is not a certification, the exam-based kind of credential (certificate vs certification). Our Coursera Plus page has the plan-by-plan price table, and our Coursera page the verdict on the platform.
No chart here yet: our job-ad export (October 2026) and fact checks have no figures for Coursera Plus vs Coursera that we could chart. Charts appear once checked data arrives.

How do you work out whether Coursera Plus costs less?
Multiply your months of study by each route's monthly price and pick the lowest total. Start before you pick a program:
- Try a course free in Preview, Coursera's free mode: the first module with its graded work, no certificate.
- Open the program page. Note its monthly price and whether it has the badge. No program yet? Price the cheapest one you are considering.
- Guess your months of study. We give no program lengths.
- Add up each route below at the prices your checkout shows, and pick the lowest total.
Let M be the months you expect to pay for (M1, M2 for two programs), P the monthly price on the program page (P1, P2 likewise), Q the monthly Plus price and A the annual Plus price.
| Route | What you pay |
|---|---|
| One program on its own subscription | M × P |
| Two programs at the same time | M × (P1 + P2) |
| Two programs one after another | (M1 × P1) + (M2 × P2) |
| Coursera Plus, monthly | M × Q, however many programs you take |
| Coursera Plus, annual | A for up to 12 months |
Source: our method.
A program's own subscription is its monthly plan. Round a partial month up: Coursera's Terms of Use say a Specialization subscription is canceled at the end of the month in which you earn the full certificate.
Coursera's Plus page lists Plus in US dollars at $59 a month (Q) or $399 a year (A), and its "Individual Courses & Programs" range at $49 to $79 a month, which we use for P.
The annual threshold is the first month in which paying monthly passes A. For Plus monthly, six months come to $354 and seven to $413, so the annual plan costs less from month 7. For a program, find the first M at which M times P passes $399.
These sums leave out the free trial.
What does the math show for four kinds of learner?
Plus monthly wins for two overlapping badged programs or an expensive single program. The sums use $49 and $79 a month, the two ends of the program range.
| Profile | Own subscriptions | Plus monthly ($59) | Plus annual ($399) | Lowest total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. One program, 5 months, $49 | 5 × $49 = $245 | 5 × $59 = $295 | $399 | Own subscription |
| 1. One program, 5 months, $79 | 5 × $79 = $395 | 5 × $59 = $295 | $399 | Plus monthly, if badged |
| 2. Two programs in a row, 3 + 4 months, $49 each | (3 × $49) + (4 × $49) = $343 | 7 × $59 = $413 | $399 | Own subscriptions |
| 2. Two programs in a row, 3 + 4 months, $79 each | (3 × $79) + (4 × $79) = $553 | 7 × $59 = $413 | $399 | Plus annual |
| 3. Two programs at once, 4 months, $49 each | 4 × ($49 + $49) = $392 | 4 × $59 = $236 | $399 | Plus monthly, if both badged |
| 4. One program, 4 to 10 months, $49 | $196 to $490 | $236 to $590 | $399 | Own subscription if unsure |
Source: our sums, from the US-dollar list prices on Coursera's Plus page (see Sources). Badged: the "Included with Coursera Plus" label is on the program's enrollment page.
Profile 1: one program
At $49 a month, the program's own subscription is $10 a month below Plus monthly, and it stops by itself once you earn the certificate. At $79, five months of Plus monthly cost $100 less, but you must cancel Plus yourself.
Profile 2: two programs one after another
At $49 each, seven months of study come to $343 on the programs' own subscriptions: $56 below the annual plan and $70 below Plus monthly. At $79 each the total is $553, and the annual plan at $399 is the lowest.
Profile 3: two programs at the same time
Two $49 subscriptions side by side cost $98 a month, or $392 over four months; four months of Plus cost $236. If one program is unbadged, Plus and $49 a month for the other come to $432 ($236 plus $196), more than the two subscriptions.
Profile 4: you do not know how long it will take
For one $49 program, Plus monthly costs $10 a month more in every month, so the only question is the annual plan. It costs less from month 9, not month 7: eight months at $49 come to $392, nine to $441. Finishing in four months on the program's own subscription saves $203 against the annual plan; ten months costs $91 more. If you expect 4 to 10 months, pay monthly for the program: the worst case is $91 more, the best $203 less.
What are you paying for: a course, a program or Plus?
You can pay for one course, one program or Plus; each bills differently.
- One course, one-time payment. Full access to that course for 180 days, with a Course Certificate (Coursera's certificate for one course) when you finish. The price is on the course page. A course inside a Specialization can also be taken through that Specialization's subscription; cancel it once the course is done.
- One Specialization or Professional Certificate, monthly. Covers every course in that program and ends by itself once you earn its certificate. Coursera says most of these subscriptions start with a free trial (enrollment options).
- Coursera Plus, monthly or annual. One fee covers over 10,000 courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates. Coursera says "Coursera Plus subscriptions will not auto-cancel," so the plan renews until you cancel.
Canceling stops future payments and keeps your progress and grades; refunds follow Coursera's separate refund rules.
What does Coursera Plus leave out?
Plus excludes degrees, another certificate program type and certain courses, Specializations and Professional Certificates, according to the questions-and-answers section of Coursera's Plus page. The help center adds that for-credit content (work that earns academic credit), such as degree program courses and some Professional Certificates, may not be included.
Coursera says its education partners must agree to include a course in Plus.
So check each program before you pay: open its enrollment page (where you sign up) and look for the "Included with Coursera Plus" badge. With no badge, treat the program as not covered until Coursera confirms it, and put its own price into the sums. For degrees, see our certificate vs degree guide.
Should you start a free trial or apply for financial aid first?
For a single course, apply for financial aid first. Coursera's aid article says "your financial aid application will be canceled if you start a free trial for a subscription." For Plus, aid is not confirmed (the article does not mention Plus), so budget without it. A free trial is a short period before the first payment; cancel during it and you pay nothing.
Financial aid is a discount on one course that Coursera grants after a written application. Coursera states, "We do not offer financial aid for Specializations," so for a Specialization you send a separate application for each course.
- Pick the courses you need.
- Apply on the first course's page. The form asks about your education, career goals and finances, in at least 150 words.
- Wait for the review, which can take up to 16 days, and start no free trial meanwhile.
- Approval brings a discount on that course and 180 days to finish it. A refusal comes by email with the reason, and you can apply again.
- If a trial is already running, cancel it, wait until it ends, then apply again.
Coursera's free trial article gives a 7-day trial on most monthly subscriptions, monthly Plus included, and a 1-day trial on some shorter Specializations. Each subscription gets one trial, and no certificate is issued until the first monthly payment.
What happens to a subscription you already have when you start Plus?
It keeps running. Coursera's help center says existing subscriptions "will not automatically cancel when you start a Coursera Plus subscription," and you must cancel them to stop future charges. Cancel the program subscription on the day you switch, and note the date Plus will next charge you.
What do job ads name?
A job ad can name a certificate but not how the learner paid for it, so these counts apply to every route on this page. We count US ads from Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in October 2026: an ad counts when it comes up in a search for the job title plus the certificate's exact phrase in quotation marks.
| Google certificate sold on Coursera | Exact phrase counted | Job title searched | US ads that came up for the phrase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Data Analytics | google data analytics |
data analyst | 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads |
| Google IT Support | google it support |
IT support | 3 of the 2,745 US IT-support ads |
| Google Project Management | google project management |
project manager | 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads |
| Google Cybersecurity | google cybersecurity |
security analyst | none of the 8,110 US security-analyst ads |
Source: Adzuna API, US job ads. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
An ad that names the certificate in other words is not counted. Each job title has its own total, shown in its row. For what these roles ask for, see our pages on data analysts, IT support and project managers. For a pay-per-course marketplace, see Coursera vs Udemy.
What we did not check
- Whether the Plus page prices are US prices. The archived Coursera Plus page lists every price in US dollars; that a US buyer sees these prices is our inference from the currency. Coursera's Plus help article says monthly prices can change with promotions.
- The one-time price of a course. The Plus page range is monthly; the course page shows the one-time price.
- The price of each program. We used the Plus page's "Individual Courses & Programs" range.
- Which named programs Plus excludes. We found no named list in Coursera's help article or Plus page; the badge is the check.
- Whether financial aid can be combined with Coursera Plus. The aid article does not mention Plus.
- Plans outside the US. Coursera's help center says learners in India currently have only the monthly Plus option; we did not check other countries.
- Ads that name a Google certificate without the exact phrase.

Questions people ask
Is Coursera Plus worth it?
Coursera Plus, the all-access subscription on Coursera, is worth it when it costs less than paying for each program for the same months. Coursera's archived Plus page lists it in US dollars at $59 a month or $399 a year, and its "Individual Courses & Programs" range at $49 to $79 a month. Plus monthly wins when two programs it includes run at the same time, or when one included program costs more than $59 a month. The annual plan costs less than Plus monthly from month 7 of study (six months at $59 come to $354, seven to $413). Confirm the prices at checkout.
Is Coursera still worth it in 2026?
Coursera, the online course platform, is worth paying for when you need a structured course and pick the cheapest way to pay. The free option, Preview, gives the first module of a course and no certificate. To finish a course, you pay once for it (180 days of access), subscribe to its program, take Coursera Plus or get financial aid, a course-by-course discount granted after a written application. Our Coursera page weighs the platform as a whole.
Why is Coursera falling?
If the question is about the share price of Coursera, the online course company, our Coursera page covers that drop. The stock does not set what a learner pays. Coursera's help center does: Coursera Plus renews until you cancel it, and a subscription to a single Specialization or Professional Certificate (a series of related courses) ends when you earn its certificate.
Does starting Coursera Plus cancel my Specialization subscription?
No. Coursera's help center says existing subscriptions, such as one to a single Specialization (a series of related courses), do not cancel automatically when you start Coursera Plus, the all-access subscription. Cancel the old one yourself to avoid paying for both; Coursera says your course progress is not affected.
Can I use Coursera financial aid with Coursera Plus?
Coursera's financial aid article does not mention Coursera Plus, the all-access subscription. Financial aid, a discount Coursera grants after a written application, applies only to the course it was approved for. Starting a free trial (a short unpaid period before the first charge) for a subscription cancels a pending aid application, Coursera's aid article says. For a single course, apply before you start a trial.
