Is the Google IT Support Professional Certificate worth it for beginners?
Yes, if computers and networks are new to you and you want lessons in a set order. No, if you want a credential that employers ask for by name: for that, look at CompTIA A+.
Coursera lists the program as beginner level with no prior experience required. You pay a monthly subscription and can stop paying as soon as you finish. That makes it a low-cost way to find out whether support work suits you: $147 to $294 at the US price for three to six months. CompTIA's US price for the two A+ exams is $548 (checked October 3, 2026).
It is a weaker buy if you already work on a help desk. In that case the course mostly repeats what you do every day, and the money is better spent on the exam that ads for your next job name. Our IT-support role page lists the credentials those ads name.
What do IT-support job ads name?
The exact phrase google it support appears in 3 of the 2,745 US IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). A phrase count shows how often employers write the name, not how they treat applicants who hold the certificate.
In the UK, the exact phrase google it support appears in one of the 1,286 IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). The UK count is separate from the US one, so the US figure says nothing about UK employers.
In India, the exact phrase google it support appears in none of the 259 IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). A small sample like this says little either way, so read Indian ads directly before you buy.
We count Brazilian ads under the title suporte técnico. The English phrase google it support appears in none of the 1,764 of those ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). This is a lower bound: an ad that names the course in Portuguese is not counted, so a low count is not proof that no employer wants it.
We count Mexican ads under the title soporte técnico. The English phrase google it support appears in none of the 355 of those ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). This is a lower bound: an ad that names the course in Spanish is not counted, so a low count is not proof that no employer wants it.
What do the same ads say about CompTIA A+?
We count CompTIA A+ with the search phrase comptia a. That phrase appears in 551 of the 2,745 US IT-support ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
In UK IT-support ads, the phrase comptia a appears in 84 of the 1,286 ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
The two searches use different phrases. comptia a can match wording that is not about A+, and google it support misses ads that name the course another way, so the counts are not comparable across credentials. Our methodology explains both searches. The US, UK and Indian samples cover ads with it support in the job title, so jobs advertised only as help-desk or service-desk roles fall outside them.
What does the Google IT Support certificate teach?
The program teaches day-to-day support work in six courses. Coursera's program page, checked October 6, 2026, lists them with these study times:
| Course | Title | Hours listed by Coursera |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Technical Support Fundamentals | 19 |
| 2 | The Bits and Bytes of Computer Networking | 22 |
| 3 | Operating Systems and You: Becoming a Power User | 28 |
| 4 | System Administration and IT Infrastructure Services | 24 |
| 5 | IT Security: Defense against the digital dark arts | 23 |
| 6 | Accelerate Your Job Search with AI | 6 |
Source: Coursera, Google IT Support Professional Certificate program page, checked October 6, 2026. The hours add up to 122 by our sum; the page does not state a total.
Coursera says learners practice computer assembly, wireless networking, installing programs and customer service. The page names Linux, the Domain Name System (DNS), the command-line interface (typing commands instead of clicking) and binary code (how computers store data as ones and zeros) among the systems covered. Its "tools you'll learn" list names Ruby, Git and Chef, which are software tools used in IT automation. Coursera still says no prior experience is needed.
The practical work happens in hands-on labs, widgets and code blocks rather than in one final project, according to the program page. Its skills and tools lists do not name Windows or Active Directory (Microsoft's tool for managing users and computers in a company). We did not open the syllabi, so if the ads you read ask for them, check the syllabi for courses 3 and 4 before you rely on the program alone.
Can you skip a course and still get the certificate?
Coursera says every Google Career Certificate includes an optional course, Accelerate Your Job Search with AI, which is the sixth course here. The program page we checked does not say that any of the first five can be skipped.
How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
In the US and Canada, Coursera charges $49 a month for Google Career Certificates after a seven-day free trial, according to Coursera's listing checked in October 2026. The Google IT Support program page itself does not print the price, so confirm it at checkout. All prices on this page are US dollars. Coursera shows prices in local currency at checkout, and they can differ by country, so check yours before you start the free trial; ours is the US price, checked in October 2026.
Coursera suggests three months at 10 hours a week. Its program page also says the program takes beginners to job readiness in about three to six months. At $49 a month, three billed months come to $147 and six come to $294, before taxes. These are estimates from the monthly price, not a fixed program fee.
Certificates cannot be earned during the free trial, according to Coursera's terms. The first certificate needs at least one paid month. If A+ is your next step, budget for its exams separately: CompTIA's US store listed $274 per exam, $548 for both, when we checked on October 3, 2026.

Does financial aid cover the Google IT Support certificate?
The program page says financial aid is available and links to an application. Our Coursera review records these rules: aid is granted course by course, an application needs a statement of at least 150 words, review takes up to 16 days and starting a free trial cancels an application under review. We did not recheck those rules for this page. Ask Coursera whether aid covers the whole program before you apply.
Can you pay up front, or pay monthly and cancel?
We found no one-time price for this program on the Coursera pages we checked; the listed price is monthly. Coursera's terms say cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. If you finish within a month you have paid for, cancel before the next billing date and keep the confirmation.
Google IT Support or CompTIA A+?
Take the Google course if you need structured lessons first. Pay for A+ when the ads for the jobs you want ask for it. The two are different products: one is a course you complete, the other is two supervised exams you must pass.
According to Coursera's program page, the program prepares you for the CompTIA A+ exams, and you earn a dual credential when you complete the course and both A+ exams. That is Coursera's claim; we found no pass-rate data for graduates, so plan for A+ practice exams on top of the course. Coursera says Google IT Support learners can get a discount on A+ vouchers, but its own articles give different percentages, so we cannot tell you the discounted price. Budget the full $274 per A+ exam and check the offer at checkout.
Our CompTIA A+ page covers the exams, renewal and pass scores. The Google IT Support vs CompTIA A+ comparison goes topic by topic.
Is the Google IT Support certificate recognized?
Partly. We cannot measure how often employers recognize it, but two things are on record. The program is approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) for up to 15 college credits, the equivalent of five college courses at bachelor's degree level, according to Coursera's program page. The page adds that each institution decides whether to accept the credit recommendation. ACE is a US college-credit system, so institutions outside the US may not recognize it.
We found no expiration or renewal rule for the Google certificate on the program page checked in October 2026. According to CompTIA, A+ has a three-year renewal cycle, which adds continuing-education work and a fee (see our CompTIA A+ page). A missing rule for the Google certificate is not proof that it never lapses.
Does the Google IT Support certificate get you a job?
The certificate carries no promise of a job. Graduates can apply directly to Google and over 150 US employers, including Deloitte, Target and Verizon, the program page says. That is a route to applications, not a hiring rate.
The same page says three in four certificate graduates report a positive career outcome (for example a new job, a promotion or a raise) within six months of completion. Its footnote reads, in full, "Based on program graduate survey, United States 2022." The page does not say who ran the survey, how many graduates answered or how they were chosen, so treat it as the program's own claim, not an independent hiring rate. We cannot check it against job-ad data.
For applications, describe the labs as coursework. A resume that shows a real troubleshooting task, the checks you made and the result says more than the course name.

Google IT Support certificate salary
No source we checked measures pay for Google IT Support graduates. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a $61,860 median annual wage for US computer user support specialists in May 2025, covering workers at all experience levels, not only certificate holders. That is pay for the whole US occupation, not a starting salary for graduates of the course.
What do Reddit posters say about the Google IT Support certificate?
Reddit posters ask the question this page answers, and our answer is yes, as a beginner course. The r/coursera threads from November 2025 to July 2026 show questions, not verified hiring results.
Two r/coursera posts in May 2026 asked for an honest review of the Google IT Support certificate for 2026; the second asked the same thing again. Another poster asked whether the Google IT support certification is worth it. For a beginner, the answer is yes, as a structured course and not as a credential employers name (see whether it suits beginners).
One poster asked how long people actually spend on the Google IT Support certificate, and a commenter in that thread asked whether a whole course can be skipped. We have too few posts with study times to report a typical figure. Coursera's suggested pace is three months at 10 hours a week, and the AI job-search course is the one it calls optional.
A poster asked whether to pay the certificate fee up front or pay for one month and cancel. The program is sold by the month, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period.
Which Google IT certificate should you take?
A poster in r/coursera asked which Google IT certificate to take. For a first support job, start with IT Support. If you already handle support tickets and want to automate tasks, look at Google IT Automation with Python and our comparison of the two Google programs.
After the course, choose the exam that the jobs you want name. The CompTIA overview explains the order from A+ upward, the Network+ page covers networking, and the ITIL page covers service management. The hub for IT support and networking shows the jobs these credentials lead to.
