Coursera vs Udemy: which is better for getting a job?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

In the Coursera vs Udemy choice, pick the course that teaches the skill you need; neither platform's own certificate rests on an exam. In October 2026, the exact phrase google data analytics (a Google certificate sold on Coursera) appeared in 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads on Adzuna, a job-ad site. No Udemy certificate was counted.

Coursera is an online learning platform that sells courses, Specializations (a series of related courses on one topic), Professional Certificates (job-focused series from companies such as Google and IBM) and degrees made with university and company partners. Udemy is a marketplace where instructors sell single courses: more than 250,000 of them, at $19.99 to $199.99 each, plus a Personal Plan subscription to a set of 26,000 courses (Udemy Personal Plan page, archived September 5, 2026). Since May 11, 2026, both belong to one company; on that date Coursera said they remain separate platforms.

An exam-based certification, such as the PMP (project management) or CompTIA Security+ (IT security), is a credential you earn by passing a proctored exam, meaning one taken under supervision. A certificate from either platform shows that you completed a course. Udemy's Personal Plan page says some course certificates come from outside issuers such as AWS, Microsoft, Google, CompTIA and PMI; we did not check which courses lead to those.

Coursera vs Udemy: which is better for you?

Udemy suits a single skill bought once; Coursera suits a structured program paid by the month. Match the platform to what you need from it:

  • One tool or topic, learned fast (a spreadsheet tool, a programming language, prep for one exam): a Udemy course ($19.99 to $199.99 as of September 5, 2026). You pay once, keep lifetime access to that course and can ask for a refund within 30 days (Udemy can refuse if much of the course was used or downloaded).
  • A structured series with graded work from a named partner such as Google, IBM or a university: one Coursera Specialization or Professional Certificate at $49 to $79 a month. That program subscription stops by itself when you earn the program's certificate.
  • Two Coursera programs at once, or several months of study (see the break-even sums): Coursera Plus, a subscription to the Coursera catalog (not degrees), at $59 a month or $399 a year.
  • A degree: Coursera, where the partner university awards it. Coursera Plus does not include degrees.
  • Jobs whose ads name an exam-based certification (CompTIA A+ for IT support, Security+, the PMP): the exam is the credential. A course on either platform only prepares you for it.
  • An employer that already pays for Udemy Business, the version Udemy sells to companies: start there before you pay for anything yourself.

What do Coursera and Udemy cost in 2026?

At US list prices, a Udemy course is a one-time payment of $19.99 to $199.99, and Coursera charges $49 to $79 a month for one program or $59 a month for Coursera Plus. Prices come from the vendors' pages as archived on September 5 (Udemy) and September 28, 2026 (Coursera program and Plus prices); we confirmed the help-center rules on October 3 and 6, 2026.

What you buy US list price What you get When charges stop
One Udemy course $19.99 to $199.99, paid once Lifetime access to that course After the single payment
Udemy Personal Plan Shown on your Subscriptions page; no US figure on the pages we checked 26,000 courses picked by Udemy, not the full catalog When you cancel; access runs to the end of the billing period
One Coursera Specialization or Professional Certificate $49 to $79 a month Every course in that program When you earn the program's certificate
Coursera Plus, monthly $59 a month, after a seven-day free trial More than 90% of the Coursera catalog, per Coursera (10,000+ courses and programs); no degrees or MasterTrack programs (university certificate programs Coursera sells separately) When you cancel
Coursera Plus, annual $399 a year The same catalog as the monthly plan Does not cancel by itself; you cancel

Source: Udemy Personal Plan page, Udemy help center articles on subscriptions and refunds; Coursera Plus page and the Coursera help center on canceling subscriptions. US prices from pages archived September 5 and 28, 2026.

We did not confirm a US price for buying a single Coursera course on its own, so the sums below use the program and Plus prices only. A Udemy course bought on its own does not need the Personal Plan, and the plan does not include every course: Udemy says its 26,000 plan courses are its highest-rated ones in tech, business and personal development.

When does a subscription cost more than buying a course?

A subscription charges for every month you keep it, while a Udemy course is paid once. We use one rule throughout: a monthly plan costs more than the alternative from the first month in which your total payments (months paid times the monthly fee) exceed the alternative's price.

Coursera option Against a $19.99 Udemy course Against a $199.99 Udemy course
Coursera Plus monthly ($59) Costs more from month 1 ($59) Costs more from month 4: 3 × $59 = $177; 4 × $59 = $236
One program at $49 a month Costs more from month 1 ($49) Costs more from month 5: 4 × $49 = $196; 5 × $49 = $245
One program at $79 a month Costs more from month 1 ($79) Costs more from month 3: 2 × $79 = $158; 3 × $79 = $237

Source: Udemy and Coursera US list prices from pages archived September 5 and 28, 2026; the sums are ours and leave out taxes, free trials and promotional prices.

The annual Coursera Plus plan turns the comparison around: a fixed $399 against a growing number of Udemy courses. Twenty courses at $19.99 add up to $399.80, the first total past $399; nineteen add up to $379.81. At $199.99 a course, two courses ($399.98) already pass it. Between Coursera's own plans, seven monthly Plus payments add up to $413, past the $399 annual fee, while six add up to $354; our Coursera Plus page works through the single-program cases.

These sums compare prices, not products. A Udemy course gives you one course to keep. A Coursera subscription gives you a program, or the catalog that Plus includes, only for as long as you pay, and the program subscription ends once you earn its certificate.

What does the Udemy Personal Plan cost?

We could not confirm a US price. Neither Udemy's Personal Plan page nor the help articles we read give a figure. Udemy says the fee and any free-trial length are posted on your Subscriptions page, and that subscriptions are not available to all learners (sign-up help, checked October 6, 2026).

To compare it with buying courses, take the monthly fee your sign-up page shows and use the same rule. Against one course bought outright at Udemy's list price of $19.99 to $199.99, the plan costs more from the first month in which your total fees pass that course's price. Two rules affect the risk. A free trial turns into the paid plan automatically when it ends, though you can cancel it during the trial without being charged. Once you pay, Udemy offers no refund on subscriptions bought on Udemy.com unless the law requires one (refund policy).

Coursera vs Udemy certificate: what does each one prove?

Each proves that you completed a course; neither platform's own certificate rests on a supervised exam. The table puts the Udemy certificate vs Coursera certificate side by side: who issues each type, what it shows, whether it is accredited (officially recognized by an education regulator or accrediting body) and how refunds work. "ACE credit" means the American Council on Education recommends that a college grant credit for the course; each college decides whether to accept it.

Credential Issued by What it shows Accredited? Refund window
Udemy certificate of completion Udemy, for paid, approved courses only; free and practice-test-only courses give none Every lecture and item in the course marked complete, in any order No: Udemy says it "is not an accredited institution" Single course: 30 days, which Udemy can refuse if much of the course was used or downloaded; Personal Plan: none unless the law requires
Coursera course certificate Coursera, for a course made by a university or company partner Completion of that course No; some programs carry ACE credit recommendations Single course: 7 days, if you have not earned the certificate
Coursera Specialization or Professional Certificate Coursera, with a certificate for each course plus one for the whole series Completion of every course in the series No; some programs carry ACE credit recommendations Monthly subscription: none once any free trial ends; one-time Specialization purchase: 7 days. (Coursera Plus annual, a separate product: 14 days)
Degree on Coursera The partner university A university degree The university's own degree Set by the university

Source: Udemy help center on certificates of completion and refunds; Coursera help center on enrollment options and refunds, checked October 3 and 6, 2026.

Coursera's accreditation article says ACE credit is not accreditation. Udemy goes further and says its certificates "cannot be used for formal accreditation." Our pages on the Udemy certificate and on Coursera accreditation cover each in more detail.

Two details matter when you add a certificate to a resume. Udemy's certificate help page covers downloading and sharing on social media; it does not describe a way for an employer to verify one. On Coursera, Preview mode, the free option that opens the first module of a course, gives no certificate at all.

Coursera also does not refund Guided Projects (short hands-on exercises), and it gives no partial refunds.

Do job ads name Coursera or Udemy certificates?

We can count only the certificates sold on Coursera, because Udemy issues its certificate course by course, with no shared name an ad could cite. For five Coursera-hosted certificates, the table gives the number of US job ads for the matching role that contained the certificate's exact name.

Certificate sold on Coursera Role searched Exact phrase counted US ads with the phrase, out of all US ads for the role
Google Data Analytics Data analyst google data analytics 7 of 6,094
Google IT Support IT support google it support 3 of 2,745
Google Project Management Project manager google project management 19 of 59,273
Google Cybersecurity Cybersecurity analyst google cybersecurity 0 of 8,110
IBM Cybersecurity Analyst Cybersecurity analyst ibm cybersecurity analyst professional certificate 0 of 8,110
Any Udemy certificate of completion Not counted No single name exists Not counted

Source: Adzuna API, US job ads collected in October 2026, matched by role title and by the exact phrase shown. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.

For each role, we take one month of US job ads from Adzuna, a job-ad search site, keep the ads whose title matches the role and count the ads whose text contains the phrase. A zero is a result, not a gap: it means no ad we searched that month contained the phrase. Each count is a minimum, because an ad that asks for "a Google certificate" without the program's name is not counted.

The October 2026 US counts cover Google and IBM names sold on Coursera; they say nothing about Udemy, and nothing about how an employer weighs a certificate listed on a resume. Our reading: whichever platform you pick, what you bring to an application is the skill you can show from the course; the certificate line on your resume only names the platform or its partner.

What gives a course job value, if not the certificate?

The skill, and for some jobs an exam-based certification you prepare for with the course. Our role pages list what US ads ask for: data analyst, IT support, project manager and cybersecurity analyst.

If the ads you read name an exam, our comparisons set the Coursera-hosted certificate against it: CompTIA A+ vs Google IT Support, Google Project Management vs PMP, CAPM vs Google Project Management and CompTIA Security+ vs Google Cybersecurity. The exam pages for CompTIA A+, Security+ and the PMP give fees and rules.

Coursera vs Udemy Reddit threads: what do posters say?

Three Reddit comments we collected on Udemy certificates question their value to employers and point to the knowledge instead. One commenter who said they teach on Udemy wrote that "the only value of Udemy courses is the knowledge" (r/Udemy).

In a thread asking whether Udemy certificates help an application, one commenter pointed to the lack of supervised testing: "anyone could just play all of the videos and get certification" (r/Udemy). That matches Udemy's own rule that the certificate comes once every item is marked complete. Another commenter in the same thread allowed that a course that teaches something valuable can go on a resume, then added: "But most HR will just skip it" (r/Udemy).

On the Coursera side, a commenter in a thread about which Coursera course leads to better pay wrote that the certificates they hold "hardly mean anything to most employers" and that the real value is skills and knowledge (r/coursera). These are personal views from four comments; the job-ad counts are the measured part of this page.

Are Coursera and Udemy the same company now?

Yes, since May 11, 2026. Coursera and Udemy announced the deal on December 17, 2025, as an all-stock combination (Udemy's owners were paid in Coursera shares): each Udemy share was to become 0.800 Coursera shares (announcement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission).

The combination closed on May 11, 2026. Udemy continued as a company owned by Coursera, its shares were removed from the NASDAQ stock exchange, and Coursera's shares kept trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol COUR (Coursera's SEC filing and press release).

As of May 11, 2026, Coursera told its learners that the two "remain separate platforms for the time being" and that there were no changes to subscriptions or pricing on Coursera (Coursera blog). That post says nothing about Udemy's prices, and Coursera's press release said updates would come on its blog. The price and refund rules on this page are the ones each platform published when we checked, as set out in the price comparison.

Questions people ask

Is a Coursera certificate better than a Udemy certificate?

For a job, neither platform's own certificate rests on a supervised exam, so the difference lies in who stands behind it. A Coursera certificate comes from a course or program made by one of Coursera's university or company partners, such as Google. A Udemy certificate of completion is issued for a paid course once every lecture and item is marked complete, and Udemy says it is not an accredited institution, meaning no education regulator has formally recognized it (Udemy help center, checked October 6, 2026). In October 2026, the exact phrase google data analytics, the name of a Google certificate sold on Coursera, appeared in 7 of the 6,094 US data-analyst ads we counted on Adzuna. Udemy certificates have no shared name an ad could cite, so we have no Udemy count.

Are Coursera certificates worth anything?

A Coursera certificate shows that you completed a Coursera course or program, so it is worth what you learned to earn it; it is not a credential earned by passing a supervised exam. In October 2026, the exact phrase google project management, the name of a Google Professional Certificate sold on Coursera, appeared in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted on Adzuna. Coursera's own accreditation article says ACE credit recommendations (the American Council on Education's advice that a college grant credit) are not accreditation, and each college decides whether to accept them.

Why is Coursera falling?

If the question is about Coursera's share price, this comparison does not track the stock; our Coursera page covers Coursera as a learning platform. For learners, the 2026 change was ownership: Coursera completed its combination with Udemy on May 11, 2026, and said the two remain separate platforms for the time being, with no changes to Coursera subscriptions or pricing as of that date. In the US, Coursera Plus listed at $59 a month or $399 a year on a page archived September 28, 2026.

Do employers take Udemy certificates seriously?

Job ads cannot answer that for Udemy. Udemy issues a certificate of completion for each paid course, with no shared program name an ad could cite, so our Adzuna count of US job ads has no Udemy row. Udemy itself says it is not an accredited institution (not formally recognized by an education regulator) and that its certificates cannot be used for formal accreditation (Udemy help center, checked October 6, 2026). What a Udemy course gives you is the skill, which you can show in a project or an interview.

Which is cheaper, Coursera or Udemy?

It depends on how many months you study. A Udemy course costs $19.99 to $199.99 once, with lifetime access to that course (Udemy, page archived September 5, 2026). Coursera charges by time: one Specialization or Professional Certificate costs $49 to $79 a month, and Coursera Plus $59 a month or $399 a year (Coursera, page archived September 28, 2026). Against a $199.99 Udemy course, Coursera Plus paid monthly costs more from month 4 (3 x $59 = $177; 4 x $59 = $236). Against a $19.99 course, every Coursera subscription costs more in the first month. Udemy did not publish the US price of its Personal Plan subscription on the pages we checked; it shows the fee on your Subscriptions page.

Are Coursera and Udemy the same company now?

Yes. Coursera and Udemy announced an all-stock combination on December 17, 2025, and Coursera completed it on May 11, 2026, when Udemy's shares were removed from the NASDAQ stock exchange. As of that date Coursera said the two remain separate platforms for the time being and that there were no changes to subscriptions or pricing on Coursera. Its blog post gave no details about Udemy prices.

Coursera vs Udemy: which is better?

It depends on what you need. In the Udemy courses vs Coursera comparison, the main difference is how you pay: a Udemy course costs $19.99 to $199.99 once, while one Coursera Specialization or Professional Certificate costs $49 to $79 a month and Coursera Plus $59 a month (US prices from pages archived September 5 and 28, 2026). For a job, neither platform's own certificate rests on a supervised exam, so pick the course that teaches the skill the job ads ask for. The vendors' own pages have the current figures.
