Google Project Management Certificate vs PMP: which do you need?
Google Project Management Certificate vs PMP: take the Google certificate to learn the basics, and the PMP once you have led projects for 24 months with a PMI-accredited degree, or for 36, 48 or 60 depending on your other education. No course can replace those months. Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), the phrase pmp appears in 14,183 and google project management in 19.
The Google Project Management Certificate (Coursera lists it as the Google Project Management Professional Certificate) is a beginner program of seven courses from Google, sold on Coursera, with no degree or experience required. You earn it by finishing the courses; we found no exam, expiration or renewal rule on its Coursera page. The Project Management Professional (PMP) is the Project Management Institute (PMI) certification for people who lead projects, earned by passing an exam after PMI accepts your experience.

Which should you take, by situation?
It depends on one thing: how many months you have spent leading projects. Without those months, the PMP is closed to you and the Google course is open; with them, the PMP is the credential to apply for.
- New to project management, or changing careers with no projects led: the PMP application is not open to you yet. The Google certificate teaches the basics in a beginner course. For a first project job it is training, not proof of experience; compare the two counts in the job-ad table and see what project-manager ads ask for. If you want a PMI exam at this stage, our comparison of the Google certificate and the CAPM covers the PMI step with a lower bar.
- Leading projects, but short of the PMP minimum: count your months. PMI asks for 36 with a bachelor's degree, 48 with an associate's degree or vocational diploma, 60 with a secondary diploma, or 24 with a degree from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC). Only months in the past 10 years count, and overlapping projects count once. A course adds no months.
- Already past the PMP minimum: apply for the PMP. You still need 35 hours of training or an active CAPM. Coursera says the Google course can cover those hours; other self-paced courses can too, and PMI decides each application.
- Your employer already pays for Coursera: the Google course costs you only time. Treat it as training that, by Coursera's account, covers the 35 hours, not as a step that shortens the experience rule.
Google project management vs PMP: what do job ads name?
In October 2026, the phrase pmp appears in 14,183 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted, and the phrase google project management in 19 (Adzuna). The table gives the same counts for five countries, so you can check the one closest to you.

Source: Adzuna API, project-manager job ads collected in October 2026 (Brazil: gerente de projetos; France: chef de projet), matched by the exact phrases pmp and google project management. "No count" means we have no measured figure for that country this month; it does not mean zero ads. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.
The Google column counts the phrase google project management, not the certificate by name. An ad that calls it the "Google PM certificate" or a "Google career certificate" is missed. The PMP column counts the abbreviation pmp, so an ad that writes only "Project Management Professional" is missed too. Both counts are minimums, and one ad can contain both phrases and then counts in each column.
We search for the English phrases in every country, so in Brazil and France an ad that names either credential in Portuguese or French wording is not counted. Brazil's sample is small (281 gerente de projetos ads in October 2026), so read the Brazilian figures as a rough guide.
Both counts cover ads with a project-manager title only, so coordinator and assistant roles are not in them. For every credential that US project-manager ads name, see what project-manager ads ask for.

Does the Google Project Management Certificate count toward the PMP?
Only toward the 35 hours of training, and only on Coursera's word: PMI's PMP page does not name the Google course, and PMI decides each application. It does not count toward the 24 to 60 months of leading projects.
The PMP application has two separate parts. One is experience: the months spent leading projects, set by your education. The other is training: 35 hours of project management training, or an active Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) in its place (PMI PMP page, checked October 6, 2026).
Coursera links the Google course to the training part in two articles. Its article updated October 17, 2024 says the requirement can be met by completing the Google program. Its guide to PMI certifications, updated August 10, 2026, says to "work toward the 35-hour project management education requirement" by enrolling in it. Coursera sells the course, so these are the seller's statements.
PMI's PMP page lists "Self-paced courses from any organization" as one way to get the 35 hours, next to live classes and an active CAPM. It does not name Google or Coursera. The training must come from a course: PMI says books and practice exams alone are not accepted. Coursera's program page gives two separate figures: over 140 hours of instruction and over 100 hours of project management education. The sentence with the 100 hours names the CAPM, not the PMP.
PMI may select an application for audit at random. If yours is selected, you must send documentation of your education, and all training is subject to audit (PMP exam content outline). PMI's certification handbook gives you 90 days to submit the requested documents.
The experience part is where the course cannot help. PMI asks you to "add up time that you managed projects in a professional setting" within the last 10 years and not to double-count overlapping projects. Course assignments, including the Google capstone, are training. Coursera's 2024 article makes the same point in its own way: if you are just starting out, it suggests gaining more experience or looking at the CAPM before the PMP.

What PMI's December 1, 2026 rule changes
From December 1, 2026, PMI changes the rule for live PMP classes (taught by an instructor, in person or online). They count only when they come from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher-education program, including PMI GAC programs (PMI new-exam page). Training completed before that date stays eligible under the current rules.
The rule leaves self-paced courses alone: PMI's page still lists self-paced courses from any organization after the change. The Google course is on-demand, so the live-class rule does not apply to it. The announcement covers live-class training only; the experience months are not part of it.
How do cost, time and requirements compare?
The Google certificate costs $49 a month on Coursera in the US and Canada, so six billed months come to $294 before taxes. The PMP exam costs $405 for PMI members and $655 for others, and you can book it only after PMI accepts your application.

Source: Coursera program page, checked October 6, 2026. PMI PMP page, PMP exam content outline, PMI CCR handbook and PMI's US-dollar store, checked October 2026.
The $294 is our estimate, not a Coursera price: you pay for every month the subscription stays active, so finishing in five months costs $49 less, and each extra month adds $49. Coursera's price outside the US and Canada may differ, and we have not verified it.
All dollar figures here are US prices. PMI sells in US dollars in its main store, and separate stores serve Brazil and India; we did not read the India store for this comparison, so readers in India should check that store and Coursera's local price. PMI publishes no fixed dollar fee for PMP renewal; its renewal handbook says the fee depends on membership and region. Of the 60 PDUs, at least 35 must be education, and no more than 25 can be giving back to the profession.
For the PMP alone, membership ($139) plus the member exam fee ($405) comes to $544, against $655 for the non-member exam fee; that arithmetic is ours. If the Google course covers your 35 hours, it replaces the cost of another PMP course, not the exam fee. Training bought for the PMP is a separate bill, and we did not price other courses for this comparison.

Should you take the Google certificate first, then the PMP?
You don't need to. PMI does not require the Google certificate for the PMP, and it is one of several ways to cover the 35 hours of training, by Coursera's account.
The order makes sense in one case: when you are new to the field, want structured basics now and expect to lead projects later. The course then teaches the vocabulary early. Whether PMI accepts it as training when you apply years later is up to PMI when it reviews that application.
The CAPM sits between the two. Google says the course's education hours apply to PMI credentials like the CAPM, which asks for a secondary diploma and 23 contact hours of project management education. The CAPM exam costs $225 for PMI members and $300 for others. An active CAPM also meets the PMP training rule, so it can replace the 35 hours. Our CAPM vs PMP comparison covers that route.
If you already meet the PMP experience rule, the Google course adds a beginner certificate you may not need. Another self-paced course can meet the same rule, and so can PMI's own self-paced exam prep, which PMI says fulfills the training requirement.
For security project leads, our CISM vs PMP comparison covers a different senior route.
Google project management vs PMP on Reddit: what do candidates ask?
The Reddit posts we collected about the Google certificate and the PMP are questions and opinions. None reports PMI accepting the Google certificate for a PMP application.
- Whether PMI accepts it. An r/pmp poster had finished the Google certificate through Coursera access provided by their employer. They asked whether anyone had used it toward the 35 hours and said they could not find it on a PMI list of courses (r/pmp, August 2026). They also asked whether a self-paced course was acceptable. PMI's page lists self-paced courses from any organization; it does not list individual courses by name.
- Training hours versus PDUs. The same poster asked, "Did PMI accept it toward the PDUs?" PDUs are what PMP holders earn to renew; the application asks for 35 hours of training instead.
- How employers see it. An r/PMCareers thread asked who had used the Google certificate to get a job. One commenter wrote: "Think of it as educational certificate vs a professional certification." The same comment called the PMP "perceived much higher than either," meaning the Google certificate and the CAPM (r/PMCareers, September 2026).
- Experience first. A commenter involved in hiring wrote in the same thread: "Experience trumps all" (r/PMCareers, September 2026).

Questions people ask
Does the Google Project Management Certificate count toward the PMP?
The Google Project Management Certificate can count toward the PMP's 35 hours of training only in the sense Coursera describes. Coursera's October 2024 article says the training requirement can be met by completing the Google program. Its article updated August 10, 2026, says you can work toward the 35 hours by enrolling in it. PMI's PMP page lists self-paced courses from any organization as one way to get the 35 hours and does not name the Google course (checked October 6, 2026). PMI decides each application and may audit it. The course does not count toward the 24 to 60 months of experience leading projects that the PMP also requires.
Can you get the PMP with the Google certificate?
No. The Google Project Management Certificate is a course-completion certificate, and the PMP is a PMI certification you earn by passing a 180-question exam after PMI accepts your application. The application needs 36 months leading projects with a bachelor's degree, 48 with an associate's degree or vocational diploma, or 60 with a secondary diploma. With a degree from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC), 24 months are enough. The months must fall within the past 10 years, without overlap. The Google course can at most cover the separate 35-hour training rule, by Coursera's account.
How much do the Google certificate and the PMP cost?
Coursera charges $49 a month for the Google Project Management Certificate in the US and Canada, after a seven-day free trial; six billed months come to $294 before taxes, an estimate that depends on how many months you stay subscribed. The PMP exam costs $405 for PMI members and $655 for others in PMI's US-dollar store, PMI membership is $139 a year, and a retake costs $275 for members or $375 for others (checked October 2026).
Do you need the Google certificate before the PMP?
No. PMI does not require the Google Project Management Certificate for the PMP. The PMP application needs months spent leading projects plus 35 hours of project management training or an active Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). PMI's page lists self-paced courses from any organization, live classes and an active CAPM as ways to meet the training rule; Coursera says the Google course can meet it, and PMI decides each application.
Google project management vs PMP: which do job ads name?
Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), the phrase pmp appears in 14,183 and the phrase google project management in 19. Both counts are minimums: ads that write the names in other words are missed, and one ad can contain both phrases.
Does the Google certificate give you project management experience for the PMP?
No. PMI asks PMP applicants to add up time they managed projects in a professional setting, taking responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes, within the last 10 years (PMI PMP page, checked October 6, 2026). A course, including the Google Project Management Certificate and its practice projects, is training, not that experience. Coursera's own 2024 article suggests that people just starting out gain more experience or look at the CAPM before the PMP.
