Google Project Management Certificate vs CAPM: take Google's beginner course to learn the basics, and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) from the Project Management Institute (PMI) when you want an exam-based credential. Of 59,273 US project-manager ads on Adzuna (a job-ad search site) in October 2026, capm appears in 982 and google project management in 19.

The Google Project Management Certificate (Coursera lists it as the Google Project Management Professional Certificate) is a beginner program of seven courses from Google, sold on Coursera, an online course platform. It needs no degree or experience, and you earn it by finishing the courses. The CAPM is PMI's certification for people without project experience: you prove what you know in a supervised exam. The two job-ad counts use different phrases, so they are not a ranking.

Which should you take, by situation?

Pick by what you need to show at the end: a finished course, or a passed PMI exam. Neither one asks for project experience, so both are open to a beginner.

  • You want to learn how projects are planned and run, and no one has asked you for a credential: start with the Google certificate. It costs $49 a month in the US and Canada, and you can stop when you have what you need.
  • You want a PMI credential on your resume: take the CAPM. You need a secondary diploma (high school diploma, GED or equivalent), to be at least 18, and 23 hours of courses on project management before the exam.
  • You want both: the Google course could serve as your 23 hours only if PMI accepts it. Coursera and Google say it qualifies; PMI has not said so on its CAPM page. The section on whether the Google certificate counts toward the CAPM explains what to check.
  • Your employer already pays for Coursera: if the plan includes this course, it costs you only time. Treat the CAPM as a separate decision with its own $225 to $300 exam fee.
  • You plan to take the Project Management Professional (PMP), PMI's certification for people who lead projects, later on: an active CAPM covers the PMP's 35 hours of training. Our CAPM vs PMP comparison covers that route, and our Google certificate vs PMP comparison covers the course route.

Your first step, whichever you choose: open PMI's CAPM page and the Coursera program page side by side and check the entry rules and price for your country before you pay for either.

What do job ads say about the CAPM and the Google certificate?

They give two separate counts that do not measure the same thing. Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted on Adzuna in October 2026, the phrase capm appears in 982 and the phrase google project management in 19. The table gives the same counts for four countries.

Country Project-manager ads Ads containing capm Ads containing google project management
United States 59,273 982 19
United Kingdom 6,205 8 0
India 2,413 30 0
Brazil 281 15 0

Source: Adzuna API, project-manager job ads collected in October 2026 (Brazil: gerente de projetos), matched by the exact phrases capm and google project management. "No count" means we have no measured figure for that country this month. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.

The capm column counts the credential's short name, which ads use as written. The Google column counts the words google project management, part of the course's full title. An ad that says "Google PM certificate" or "Google Career Certificate" is missed, so the Google count is a minimum of unknown size. A 0 in that column means no ad used those exact words, not that no ad mentioned the course.

The capm count is a minimum too: an ad that writes only "Certified Associate in Project Management" is missed. One ad can contain both phrases and then counts in each column. We search for the English phrases in Brazil as well, and its sample is small (281 ads in October 2026), so read the Brazilian row as a rough guide.

Both counts come from the project-manager ad search only, so ads found under other job titles are not in them. For every credential that US project-manager ads name, see what project-manager ads ask for.

Does the Google certificate count toward the CAPM?

Coursera and Google say it does, and PMI decides. PMI's CAPM page does not name Google or Coursera, so the answer for your application comes from PMI, not from the course seller.

The CAPM requires "at least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam" (PMI CAPM page, archive copy dated October 7, 2026, read October 12, 2026). These are hours spent learning in a course. The page names two ways to meet the rule, PMI's own on-demand CAPM course and instructor-led CAPM courses, and mentions neither Google nor Coursera.

PMI's CAPM exam content outline lists the kinds of providers it accepts: PMI Authorized Training Partners, PMI chapters, employer programs, training companies, universities and distance-learning companies, the last only when the course ends with an assessment. PMI chapter meetings do not count. We did not verify whether the Google course meets PMI's wording on an end-of-course assessment.

On the other side, Coursera's program page says the program "qualifies you for over 100 hours of project management education" that helps prepare you for PMI certifications, and it names the CAPM. A second sentence on the same page says those hours "apply directly to requirements" for PMI credentials like the CAPM, and Google's own certificate site said the same when we read it on October 5, 2026 (we could not re-confirm it on October 12). Neither page says PMI approved the course. Coursera sells the course, so these are the seller's statements. The page gives a separate figure of over 140 hours of instruction.

PMI may check your education hours when it reviews your application or in an audit. Before you pay the exam fee, ask PMI whether it will accept the Google course for your 23 hours, and keep your Coursera certificate and course records.

How do cost, time and requirements compare?

The Google certificate costs $49 a month on Coursera in the US and Canada, so six billed months come to $294 before taxes. The CAPM exam costs $225 for PMI members and $300 for others, plus the cost of your 23 hours of project management education.

Source: Coursera program page, checked October 12, 2026. PMI CAPM page, CAPM handbook, PMI's CAPM renewal FAQ and PMI's US-dollar store, with store prices read October 3, 2026.

A proctor is a supervisor who watches you take the exam, in person or by webcam. PDUs, or professional development units, are credits you earn for learning activities after you pass. After three years without renewal, PMI suspends the CAPM for one year, and then it expires.

The $294 is our estimate, not a Coursera price: you pay for every month the subscription stays active, so finishing in five months costs $49 less, and each extra month adds $49. You can cancel at any time, and access runs to the end of the billing period. Coursera's price outside the US and Canada may differ, and we have not verified it.

PMI sells in US dollars in its main store, with separate stores for Brazil and India. For the first exam attempt alone, membership does not pay off: $139 for a year plus the $225 member fee comes to $364, against $300 without membership, so joining costs $64 more. Members also pay $50 less on a retake and $90 less on the three-year renewal, if you need either.

If PMI accepts the Google course as your 23 hours, six months of Coursera plus the CAPM exam comes to $294 plus $300, or $594, without membership. If PMI does not accept it, add the cost of another course for the 23 hours. We did not verify a price for PMI's own on-demand CAPM course or for the other courses PMI accepts, so check the current price on PMI's CAPM page. As a rough range only, on Reddit, one new graduate said their school offered a 23-hour course for $1,950, while a 26-hour Udemy course cost under $200 (r/projectmanagement).

What the CAPM certification costs: required and optional fees (USD)
Joining first costs $374 (membership $139 + application fee $10 + exam $225), $74 more than the non-member exam ($300).

Should you take the Google certificate first, then the CAPM?

You don't need to. PMI does not require the Google certificate for the CAPM. Only Coursera says the course covers the 23 hours; PMI has not confirmed it. If you are unsure which to pick, start with the Google course (it is cheaper to stop and has no entry rules), and decide on the CAPM once you know you need a PMI credential.

The order makes sense when you are new to the field, want structured lessons on planning, risk and stakeholders (the people affected by a project) before an exam, and are willing to ask PMI about the hours first. It makes sense too when your employer pays for Coursera. If your only goal is the CAPM, the courses PMI names on its CAPM page meet the education rule without that open question.

Think ahead if the PMP is your target. An active CAPM fulfills the PMP's training requirement, which is otherwise 35 hours, but you still need months of leading projects before you can apply (PMI PMP page). Coursera says the Google course can work toward those 35 hours as well; PMI's PMP page lists self-paced courses from any organization and names no Google course.

CAPM or Google certificate on Reddit: what do beginners ask?

The Reddit posts we collected about the CAPM and the Google certificate are questions and opinions from people who posted, not outcomes we could check.

  • Whether the CAPM is worth it before the PMP. Posters asked whether it is a good starting point when they cannot apply for the PMP yet. A commenter who said they were a hiring manager in r/PMCareers wrote, in capital letters, that the CAPM will not help you start a career in project management (r/PMCareers, September 2026). What the CAPM gives a beginner is a PMI credential that needs no experience and later covers the PMP's training hours while it stays active.
  • Whether the Google course is worth it. In an r/PMCareers thread about using the Google certificate to get a job, one commenter wrote: "Think of it as educational certificate vs a professional certification" (r/PMCareers, September 2026). A commenter involved in hiring wrote in the same thread: "Experience trumps all" (r/PMCareers).
  • The cheapest way to the 23 hours. An intern project manager in Sri Lanka asked whether to pay a local institute or use low-cost Udemy or LinkedIn Learning courses (r/PMCareers). PMI accepts courses from training companies and distance-learning companies, the latter only with an end-of-course assessment. Outside Brazil and India, PMI charges the exam in US dollars.
  • Whether PMI accepts the Google certificate. An r/pmp poster who had finished it asked whether anyone had used it for a PMP application and said they could not find it on a PMI list of courses (r/pmp, August 2026). None of the posts we collected reports PMI's answer, for the PMP or the CAPM.
  • Going from the CAPM to the PMP. Posters asked whether anyone had made that step. An active CAPM covers the PMP's 35 training hours, and the PMP's months of leading projects still apply.

Questions people ask

Does the Google Project Management Certificate count toward the CAPM?

Coursera and Google say it does; PMI's CAPM page does not name the course. Coursera's program page, checked in October 2026, says the Google Project Management Certificate qualifies you for over 100 hours of project management education and names the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). The CAPM needs 23 hours of study in project management before the exam. The Project Management Institute (PMI), which runs the CAPM, does not name Google or Coursera on its CAPM page; it accepts distance-learning courses only when they end with an assessment, and it may check your hours when it reviews your application or in an audit. Ask PMI before you rely on the Google course for the CAPM.

Is the CAPM harder than the Google certificate?

They test you in different ways. The CAPM from the Project Management Institute (PMI) is a 150-question exam in 180 minutes, taken at a test center or online while a proctor (a remote supervisor) watches, and PMI publishes no passing score. The Google Project Management Certificate on Coursera is earned by finishing seven courses; we found no proctored exam on its Coursera page. We have no pass-rate source for either, so we do not rank them by difficulty.

How much do the CAPM and the Google Project Management Certificate cost?

The CAPM exam costs $225 for PMI members and $300 for others in PMI's US-dollar store (read October 3, 2026), plus whatever you pay for the 23 hours of study it requires. The Google Project Management Certificate costs $49 a month on Coursera in the US and Canada after a seven-day free trial (checked October 12, 2026); six billed months come to $294 before taxes. If PMI accepted the Google course as your 23 hours, six months of Coursera plus the non-member exam would come to $594.

CAPM vs Google Project Management: which do job ads name?

Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted on Adzuna in October 2026, the phrase capm appears in 982 and the phrase google project management in 19. The two phrases do not measure the same thing: capm is the credential's short name, while ads that call the Google course a "Google PM certificate" or a "Google Career Certificate" are not counted. Read them as two separate counts, not a ranking.

Do you need the Google certificate before the CAPM?

No. PMI's CAPM rules ask for a secondary diploma (high school diploma, GED or equivalent), an age of at least 18 and 23 education hours in project management. The Google Project Management Certificate is not on that list. PMI's CAPM page names its own on-demand CAPM course and instructor-led CAPM courses as ways to meet the education rule, and PMI accepts other providers that meet its conditions.

Does the CAPM or the Google certificate expire?

The CAPM does, after three years, unless you renew it with 15 professional development units (PDUs, credits for learning activities) and a fee of $60 for PMI members or $150 for others, according to PMI's CAPM renewal FAQ. For the Google Project Management Certificate, we found no expiration or renewal rule on its Coursera page (checked in October 2026).
