PMP certification vs PRINCE2: which one should you get?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

PMP certification vs PRINCE2 comes down to where you want to work. In the US, the PMP is named in 24% of the 59,273 project-manager ads we counted in October 2026, and PRINCE2 in 304 of 59,273. In the UK, PRINCE2 appears in 14% of 6,205 UK project-manager ads, the PMP in 6.9% (Adzuna). For US, Indian or Brazilian employers, aim for the PMP. For UK employers, start with PRINCE2. The PMP has one hard gate the other lacks: two to five years of experience leading projects, depending on your education, before you can take the exam.

PMP vs PRINCE2: share of project manager job ads naming each

Quick answer by country and goal

  • Applying to US employers: the PMP. PRINCE2 is close to invisible in US ads (304 of 59,273).
  • Applying to UK employers: PRINCE2 first, Practitioner level if you already run projects. Add the PMP later if you target multinationals or consultancies.
  • Applying in India: the PMP is named in 24% of Indian project-manager ads and PRINCE2 in 8.6%, so PRINCE2 is not a dead end there.
  • Applying in Brazil: the PMP (35% of the 281 ads for "gerente de projetos" we counted), with a small sample.
  • No project-lead experience yet: you cannot take the PMP. PRINCE2 Foundation has no prerequisite; in the US, the CAPM is the usual first step (see CAPM vs PMP).

What about PRINCE2 Agile or the APM PMQ in the UK?

UK readers will meet two more names. PRINCE2 Agile, also from PeopleCert, applies the method to agile delivery; its Foundation exam has 40 questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with a 60% passing score (PeopleCert). The Project Management Qualification (PMQ) comes from the Association for Project Management (APM), which holds a Royal Charter and awards Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) status. The PMQ is a 2.5-hour online exam of 40 questions worth 90 points, with no formal entry requirement, though APM says candidates typically have two to three years of experience as a project professional. Booked as an open exam (a public session rather than one arranged by an employer), the PMQ costs £528 for APM members and £648 for others, about $697 and $855 (APM). We do not count either one separately yet: an ad that names PRINCE2 Agile also falls into our PRINCE2 count, and we do not track the PMQ.

What job ads ask for, country by country

We searched the same month of job ads for the job title "project manager" (or the local title) and counted how many name each certificate. The full method is on our methodology page.

The PMP does not disappear from UK ads. In October 2026, 430 UK ads named the PMP, against 840 naming PRINCE2. A UK project manager with only the PMP can still apply to those jobs; they miss the ads that name PRINCE2.

India is the other case to read. In Indian ads the PMP appears in 24% and PRINCE2 in 8.6% (US: 304 of 59,273). Brazil is worth reading alongside India, though with only 281 ads in the sample, a few ads move the share by several points. Mexico and Spain have too few ads counted (60 and 127) to draw a conclusion; treat the figures for those two countries as a direction, not a measure.

Scale matters too. The US sample is 59,273 ads and the UK one 6,205, so compare the UK PRINCE2 count with the PMP's US count (14,183 ads) with care. For the full list of certificates employers name for this job, see our project-manager role page.

The "70% of UK ads require PRINCE2" claim

Training sites repeat that more than 70% of UK project-management ads require PRINCE2; one London course provider attributes it to Reed and LinkedIn reports without a link (Edoxi, August 21, 2025). Our count does not support it. In October 2026, 14% of UK project-manager ads named PRINCE2 at all, required or preferred. Most UK project-manager ads name neither certificate.

A similar claim runs the other way for India: one training site says the choice there "leans 90% towards PMP" (ShriLearning, November 26, 2025). In our Indian count for October 2026, PRINCE2 appears in 207 ads against 579 for the PMP. The PMP leads in India; PRINCE2 still appears in a real share of Indian ads.

What else the same ads name: agile

Agile is named in 12% of US project-manager ads, 12% of UK ones and 30% of Indian ones (Adzuna, October 2026). For comparison, PRINCE2 is named in 14% of UK ads and the PMP in 24% of US ads. Neither certificate replaces evidence that you have run projects with an agile team, so whichever you choose, put that experience on your resume in plain words.

Source: PMI PMP page, PeopleCert Foundation page, PeopleCert Practitioner page and PeopleCert renewal page, PeopleCert Plus, QA and Knowledge Train, all checked October 3, 2026; PMP renewal fee from 4PMTI. Euro prices include VAT as shown to a European buyer. Conversions use the ECB reference rates of October 2, 2026: $1.1225 and £0.85033 per euro, so about $1.32 per UK pound.

Three cost details change the math. PMI says its prices vary by membership status and region, so the fee you see may differ from ours. The PeopleCert exam bundle includes the official eBook and training kit, while the PMP fee covers only the exam; the 35 training hours cost extra unless you already hold an active CAPM. And PMI allows three attempts within a one-year eligibility period, with each retake paid again (PMI certification handbook).

Taking both PRINCE2 exams through PeopleCert's self-study bundles comes to €1,351, about $1,517. UK buyers see no pound price from either vendor: PeopleCert shows euros, and PMI's PMP handbook lists US dollars, euros, Brazilian reais and Indian rupees as its currencies. In the UK, PRINCE2 is also sold as a course with the exams included. QA lists its five-day Foundation and Practitioner course from £2,760 plus VAT, and Knowledge Train charges £1,399 plus VAT self-paced or £1,899 plus VAT with an instructor (about $1,847 and $2,507), exams included. Those course prices, not the self-study bundle, are what to set against the PMP fee plus its 35 training hours.

PRINCE2 vs PMBOK: how the two methods differ

The PMP tests PMI's view of the whole profession. PMI describes it as covering "predictive, hybrid or agile" ways of working, without tying the holder to one method. Its reference, the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition (November 2025), is built on six principles and seven performance domains: governance, scope, schedule, finance, stakeholders, resources and risk (PMI). Since July 2026, the exam weights People at 33%, Process at 41% and Business Environment at 26%, up from 8% (PMI new exam page).

PRINCE2 teaches one named method. It has seven principles, seven practices and seven processes that take a project from start-up to closure (PeopleCert). The principles include continued business justification, manage by stages and manage by exception: the project board sets limits for time, cost and scope, and the project manager escalates only when a limit is forecast to be broken (PRINCE2.com summary). Version 7 adds digital and data management, people management and sustainability.

On the job, the difference shows in vocabulary. A UK public-sector project runs with a project board, stage boundaries and exception reports because PRINCE2's predecessor became a UK government standard in 1989. PeopleCert bought AXELOS, the owner of PRINCE2, from Capita and the UK Cabinet Office in 2021 (PeopleCert). A PMP holder knows the concepts behind those terms; a PRINCE2 holder knows the exact documents and roles an organization using the method expects.

Which is harder, PMP or PRINCE2?

The PMP is harder to get, and PRINCE2 Foundation is the easiest of the three exams. The gap starts before the exam. The PMP asks for two to five years of experience leading projects within the last 10 years, depending on your education (three with a bachelor's degree), documented project by project in the application. PRINCE2 Foundation has no entry requirement at all.

The exams differ just as much. The PMP is a four-hour, 180-question test of judgment in scenarios, and PMI does not publish a fixed passing score. PRINCE2 Foundation is one hour of multiple-choice questions, closed book, with a published 60% passing score. PMI says the July 2026 exam is "not more difficult, just more relevant," though it now tests more on business strategy than before.

PRINCE2 Practitioner vs PMP

For an experienced project manager, these two are the closer match, since Foundation is an entry-level test. Practitioner asks you to apply and tailor PRINCE2 to a scenario in 150 minutes, with the official manual open, and its gate is a certificate (Foundation, the PMP, the CAPM or another accepted one) rather than years of experience. The PMP is closed book, runs 240 minutes and covers predictive, agile and hybrid work, but you can only book it once PMI has accepted your documented experience.

PRINCE2 vs PMP: which is better for your goal and level?

You have not yet led projects for two to five years (the PMP minimum for your education). The PMP is closed to you for now. In the UK, PRINCE2 Foundation is a cheap way to show you know the vocabulary employers use. In the US, compare the entry-level option in CAPM vs PMP, and keep logging your project hours.

You lead projects and want US, Indian or multinational employers. Take the PMP. It is the only one of the two that US ads name at any scale. Our page on whether the PMP is worth it sets its cost against pay in each country.

You lead projects in the UK, especially public-sector or contract work. Take PRINCE2 Practitioner. Foundation shows you know the method; Practitioner tests whether you can apply and tailor it to a project.

You are weighing a cheaper online certificate instead. The Google Project Management Certificate appears in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads, against 14,183 for the PMP; see Google Project Management vs PMP for the numbers.

You run security or IT projects. The choice may not be PMP vs PRINCE2 at all; CISM vs PMP covers the security-management route. If you are moving toward product roles, see how people become product managers without a degree. For every option in this field, start at our project-management certifications hub.

Should you get both, and which first?

Both make sense for a UK project manager who works with US clients or wants multinational roles, and for Indian project managers who see both names in ads. For most people in the US, PRINCE2 adds little.

The order has a shortcut most comparison pages miss. PeopleCert accepts the PMP as a prerequisite for PRINCE2 7 Practitioner, next to PRINCE2 Foundation. A PMP holder can skip Foundation and go straight to Practitioner, saving the Foundation bundle (about $730). So for experienced project managers, PMP first and then PRINCE2 Practitioner costs less than the reverse.

If you are early in your career, the order runs the other way by necessity: PRINCE2 Foundation now, Practitioner once you run projects, and the PMP when you reach the experience bar. If the PMP is on your list, note one date: from December 1, 2026, live PMP training counts toward the 35 hours only if an Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an accredited academic program delivers it. Self-paced courses from any organization still count, and hours completed before that date stay valid (PMI).

Renewal doubles up if you hold both: 60 PDUs every three years for the PMP and 60 CPD points every three years for PRINCE2.

What holders and vendors report

Reddit threads from late 2025 and 2026 in r/PMCareers, r/projectmanagement and r/pmp show four recurring themes. Reddit is a self-selected sample, so these are themes, not statistics.

  • The UK public sector leans to PRINCE2. When a poster asked which PRINCE2 level to take, one reply said, "PRINCE2 is huge in UK government, public sector, banking and big consultancies" (r/PMCareers, September 2026).
  • Both appear in the UK and Ireland. A project manager there said PRINCE2 is very common and the PMP is common too, which they attributed to the number of US companies in Europe (r/projectmanagement, May 2026).
  • Experience counts for more than either. In a thread on whether the PMP is overrated, one reply said recruiters use the PMP and PRINCE2 "as a capability benchmark," while practice should outweigh both (r/projectmanagement, August 2026).
  • The PMP exam feels harder. A candidate who passed the PMP in December 2025 summed up one reason: "PRINCE2 Practitioner is open book, PMP isn't" (r/pmp).

The vendors' own outcome figures are marketing. PMI says US PMP holders report a median salary of $135,000 and, across the 21 countries in its 2025 survey, a 17% higher median than non-holders (about 24% in the US; PMI). PeopleCert says 62% of PRINCE2 holders it surveyed report more job security and 50% a salary increase after certifying, without stating the sample size or date (PeopleCert). Neither figure isolates the certificate's effect, since PMP holders already have years of project-lead experience, which raises pay on its own.

Questions people ask

Is PMP still relevant in 2026?

Yes, judging by job ads. In our October 2026 count, the PMP is named in 24% of the ads for US project managers; in India the share is 24% (Adzuna). PMI updated the exam in July 2026, adding AI, sustainability and more business-strategy questions, so the credential tracks current practice. In the UK it is named less often than PRINCE2 (6.9% against 14%). Our page on whether the PMP is worth it compares its cost with pay.

Can I pass PMP in 3 months?

Only if you already meet the entry rules. You need at least three years of experience leading projects (with a bachelor's degree) and 35 hours of training before PMI accepts your application. PMI itself says studying for the PMP often takes several months, and it gives you a one-year eligibility period with up to three attempts. Whether three months is enough depends on how much of the exam content you already use at work; PMI publishes no official study time and no passing score.

Which is harder, PMP or PRINCE2?

The PMP. It requires years of documented project-lead experience before you can book the exam, and the exam itself runs 240 minutes with 180 questions and no published passing score. PRINCE2 Foundation has no prerequisite and is a 60-minute, closed-book test with a 60% passing score. PRINCE2 Practitioner takes 150 minutes but is open book.

Does PRINCE2 Foundation expire?

Under PeopleCert's current rules, yes. Its renewal page lists PRINCE2 Project Management 5th, 6th and 7th editions among certificates that must be renewed every three years from the original certification date. You renew by logging 60 CPD points through a PeopleCert Plus membership or by passing another exam in the same product suite. Older pages that call Foundation a lifetime certificate describe the earlier rules.

PRINCE2 vs PMI: what is the difference?

PMI (the Project Management Institute) is an organization; PRINCE2 is a method. PMI issues the PMP and the CAPM and publishes the PMBOK Guide. PRINCE2 is owned by PeopleCert, which bought AXELOS in 2021 and runs the PRINCE2 exams. So the real comparison is PMI's PMP against PeopleCert's PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner.

Can I take PRINCE2 Practitioner without Foundation?

Yes, if you hold another accepted certificate. PeopleCert accepts PRINCE2 7 Foundation, an older PRINCE2 5th or 6th edition certificate, the PMP, the CAPM and several other recognized project-management certificates as the prerequisite for PRINCE2 7 Practitioner (checked October 3, 2026). A PMP holder can go straight to Practitioner and skip the Foundation exam bundle, about $730.

Is PRINCE2 recognized in the US?

Rarely by employers. PRINCE2 appears in 304 of 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted in October 2026, against 24% for the PMP (Adzuna). It is useful in the US mainly if you work for a UK or European organization that uses the method. For US jobs, the PMP or, before you have the experience, the CAPM is the safer choice; see CAPM vs PMP.

PRINCE2 vs PMP salary: which pays more?

No independent source compares the two on equal terms. PMI reports a median of $135,000 for US PMP holders from its own salary survey; PeopleCert says half of the PRINCE2 holders it surveyed got a raise after certifying. Both are vendor figures, and PMP holders already have two or more years of project-lead experience, which raises pay by itself. Pay depends more on the country and the role; see our project-manager role page.
