CAPM certification vs PMP: which should you take?
Choosing between CAPM certification and the PMP comes down mostly to one fact: how many years you have spent leading projects. The PMP needs 36 to 60 months of non-overlapping experience leading projects, depending on your education (24 with a PMI-accredited degree); the CAPM needs none. Employers treat them differently too. Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted in October 2026, 14,183 named the PMP and 982 named the CAPM (Adzuna). If you already qualify for the PMP, skip the CAPM and take the PMP. If you don't, the CAPM is a cheap way to learn PMI's vocabulary and cover the PMP's training requirement, though only a small share of ads name it.

Quick answer by situation
- Student or recent graduate with no project-lead experience: the CAPM is the only one of the two you can take. Take it if the $300 fee and 23 contact hours of project management education are easy to fit in; spend more of your effort on getting a project coordinator or analyst job.
- One or two years coordinating projects: check how close you are to the PMP minimum: 36 months with a bachelor's degree, 48 with an associate's degree, 60 with a secondary diploma. PMI counts only non-overlapping months in which you led project work, and it audits a random share of applications, so count coordinator time you can describe and prove. If you will reach the PMP minimum within a year, put the money toward the PMP. If it is further away, the CAPM teaches the basics now and covers the PMP's 35 training hours, as long as it is still active when you apply.
- Enough months leading projects to meet the PMP minimum (36 with a bachelor's degree, 48 with an associate's degree, 60 with a secondary diploma): take the PMP. The CAPM adds little an employer looks for once you hold the PMP.
- Changing careers from another field: count the projects you have already led at work. PMI asks for non-overlapping months spent leading projects within the past 10 years, so a career changer who ran projects in another field may be closer to the PMP than to a first project-manager job.
- Applying to UK employers: UK ads rarely name either one. Read our PMP vs PRINCE2 comparison first.
PMP certification vs CAPM: what job ads ask for
We counted job ads for the title "project manager" (or the local equivalent) and checked how many name each credential anywhere in the text, whether as a requirement or a preference. The method is on our methodology page.

In every country where we have a usable sample, the PMP is named in far more ads than the CAPM. In the US, the CAPM shows up in 1.7% of the ads for project managers, against 24% for the PMP. In the UK, it appeared in 8 of the 6,205 project-manager ads. In ads for the local job title, the CAPM appeared in none of the 3,738 German ads, none of the 976 Italian ones and none of the 310 Polish ones.
Brazil's CAPM figure (5%) rests on a small sample: with 281 ads, a few postings move the figure by a point or two.
Two limits apply to these figures. We count ads with a project-manager title, and PMI itself lists assistant project manager, project administrator, project analyst and project coordinator among the roles CAPM holders pursue. Ads for those junior titles may name the CAPM at a different rate; we do not count them yet. And an ad that names the CAPM may name the PMP as well; our count does not separate the two, so the CAPM figure is not a set of jobs reserved for CAPM holders. The full list of credentials US employers name for this job is on our project-manager role page.

What each route costs in total
The exam fee is only part of the bill. On a first attempt without membership, the CAPM costs $300 plus whatever you pay for the 23 hours. The PMP costs $655 plus the 35 hours, unless you hold an active CAPM, which PMI accepts in place of those hours.
Membership changes the math differently for each. PMI membership is $139 a year in its main store, and the store lists an optional $10 application fee on top. For the CAPM alone, joining costs more than it saves: $139 plus the $225 member fee is $364, against $300 without membership. For the PMP, joining saves money: $139 plus $405 is $544, against $655. A member who fails once and retakes the PMP saves another $100 on the retake.
The CAPM-then-PMP path adds up as follows, using the same store prices: $300 for the CAPM plus a course for the 23 hours, then $655 for the PMP ($544 with a year of membership). If the CAPM would lapse before your PMP application, add 15 PDUs and the $150 renewal fee, or a 35-hour course instead.
PMI sells in three stores: US dollars for most of the world, plus separate Brazilian real and Indian rupee stores with their own prices. A buyer in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland or Mexico pays the US dollar price.
The cheapest CAPM route is the non-member exam plus a low-cost course for the 23 hours. PMI names its own on-demand CAPM course and instructor-led CAPM classes as ways to meet the requirement. Prices for outside courses vary widely: one new graduate on Reddit said their school was offering a 23-hour course for $1,950, while a 26-hour Udemy course cost under $200 (r/projectmanagement). On a budget of about $500, the cheap route fits: $300 for the exam plus a course like that one. The PMP's $655 fee alone does not fit, and without the required months you could not book it anyway. Before you pay for any outside course, check that it gives you a record of hours PMI will accept on the application.
CAPM vs PMP exam difficulty
The PMP is the harder of the two, and most of the difficulty sits before exam day. To book the PMP, you describe each project you led. PMI selects applications for audit at random and tells you before you pay; you then have 90 days to send proof, and PMI says the audit takes about 5 to 7 business days (PMI certification handbook). The CAPM application lists only your education and your 23 contact hours, with no experience to document.
The exams test different things. The CAPM checks whether you know the concepts. Its four domains carry these weights on PMI's CAPM page (checked October 4, 2026): project management fundamentals and core concepts 36%, business analysis frameworks 27%, agile frameworks and methodologies 20%, and predictive, plan-based methodologies 17%.
The PMP asks what an experienced project manager would do in a situation. Since July 9, 2026, its questions fall under People (33%), Process (41%) and Business Environment (26%), and PMI says about 40% of them reflect predictive approaches and 60% agile or hybrid ones. The PMP also runs an hour longer, with 30 more questions, and some items are drag-and-drop or hands-on tasks rather than plain multiple choice.
Business analysis is the clearest gap between the two. It is more than a quarter of the CAPM, and the PMP outline has no domain under that name. So prep material for one exam is a poor fit for the other, and a PMP book is not a shortcut to the CAPM.
PMI publishes no passing score for either exam, and no PMP pass rate. Treat the pass rates quoted by course sellers as their own estimates.

Is the CAPM worth it before you qualify for the PMP?
For some people, yes, as a first step. The CAPM is worth taking if you are in school or in your first job, want to learn the terms PMI uses, and plan to take the PMP within about three years. It also helps when an employer or a university program pays for it, or when you are applying for coordinator jobs where a recruiter needs a quick signal that you know the basics.
It is a poor buy if you expect it to get you a project-manager job by itself. In our US count, 982 project-manager ads named the CAPM, a small fraction of those naming the PMP. A hiring manager on Reddit says the same thing in plainer words (see what holders and hiring managers say).
Pay figures do not settle it either. PMI's CAPM page cites Forbes for an average salary of $100,750 for CAPM-certified project managers in the US, and PMI's PMP page gives a US median of $135,000 for PMP holders. One is an average and one a median, from different sources, and PMP holders have years of experience by definition, so the gap measures experience as much as the credential. For realistic entry-level pay in your country, use the role and the level, not the certificate.
If you are early in your career and weighing other beginner options, our comparisons of the CAPM and the Google Project Management Certificate and the CAPM and the PMI-ACP cover those choices. Our CAPM page covers the credential alone.
Going from the CAPM to the PMP
You do not need the CAPM before the PMP. PMI's PMP rules ask for experience plus either 35 hours of training or an active CAPM. The CAPM is one way to cover the training requirement, not a prerequisite.
The catch is the word "active." A CAPM lasts three years, and you keep it by earning 15 PDUs and paying the renewal fee. With a bachelor's degree, the PMP needs 36 months of project-lead experience. Someone who earns the CAPM in their first month of project work will reach the PMP minimum right around the time the CAPM runs out. Plan for one of two things: renew the CAPM, or take a 35-hour course before applying.
The PMP has its own lapse rule once you hold it. Miss the three-year renewal and PMI suspends the credential for one year, during which you may not use it; after that it expires, and getting it back means a new application, new fees and the exam again (PMI renewal handbook).
If you go the 35-hour route, note a PMI rule change. From December 1, 2026, live PMP classes count only when a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an accredited academic program delivers them. Self-paced courses from any provider still count if they end with an assessment, and training completed before that date stays valid (PMI).
People do make the jump. One Reddit poster who had run many projects without the formal vocabulary started on the CAPM in June, passed it in September 2026 and has applied for the PMP (r/pmp). Another said the earlier exam helped mostly with format: "Understanding the question and answer format from having done the CAPM first was an asset when I took the PMP" (r/pmp).

What holders and hiring managers say
Reddit threads from 2026 in r/PMCareers, r/pmp and r/projectmanagement come back to the same few points. Reddit is a self-selected group, so read these as themes rather than statistics.
- Experience outweighs the CAPM. A hiring manager in r/PMCareers wrote, in capital letters, that the CAPM will not help you start a career in project management (r/PMCareers, September 2026). A senior project manager with nine years of experience and an expired CAPM said employers cared about their experience, not the credential (r/pmp, September 2026).
- Industry knowledge counts as well. A CAPM holder with some unpaid project work could not get a project coordinator job in construction without construction experience, and switched to coordinator roles in their own industry (r/PMCareers, July 2026).
- It sits between a course certificate and the PMP. Comparing the Google certificate, the CAPM and the PMP, one commenter wrote: "PMP is perceived much higher than either" (r/PMCareers, September 2026). A second hiring manager, replying to the same post as the capital-letters comment, said they value CompTIA Project+ more than the CAPM (r/PMCareers).
- It helps as preparation. One holder said it gave them a baseline for describing their own experience and that "taking that exam made studying for the PMP exam easier" (r/PMCareers, September 2026).

Questions people ask
Is the CAPM harder than the PMP?
No. The CAPM is the easier of the two at every step. You can apply with a secondary-school diploma and 23 contact hours of project management education, while the PMP needs 36 to 60 months of documented, non-overlapping project leadership first (24 with a PMI-accredited degree), and PMI may audit that record. The CAPM exam is 150 questions in three hours and mostly checks that you know the concepts. The PMP is 180 questions in four hours and asks what you would do in realistic project situations, including drag-and-drop and hands-on items. PMI publishes no passing score for either.
Do I need to get the CAPM before the PMP?
No. PMI does not require the CAPM for the PMP. The PMP application needs your project-lead experience plus either 35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM, so the CAPM is one way to meet the training rule. If you already have the experience, a 35-hour course is the shorter route, and it skips a second exam fee.
Can I pass the PMP in three months?
Many people do, once PMI has accepted their application. In the Reddit posts we collected, posters who stated their PMP study time in months reported a median of 2.5 months (n=15; middle half 1.5 to 3.5 months). One commenter in r/pmp said they passed both the CAPM and the PMP within three months (r/pmp, July 2026). The three months only start counting once you meet the experience rule; without it, no amount of study lets you book the exam.
Does the CAPM expire?
Yes, after three years unless you renew it. Renewal takes 15 professional development units (PDUs) over the three years and a fee of $60 for PMI members or $150 for others, according to PMI's CAPM renewal FAQ. The PMP runs on the same three-year cycle but needs 60 PDUs. An expired CAPM no longer counts toward the PMP's training requirement.
Is the CAPM recognized outside the US?
PMI issues it worldwide, but employers outside the US rarely name it. In our October 2026 count, the CAPM appeared in 8 of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads and 30 of the 2,413 Indian ones, against 430 and 579 for the PMP (Adzuna). For UK jobs, our PMP vs PRINCE2 page compares how often ads name each.
What salary can you expect with a CAPM?
We have no source that isolates the CAPM's effect on pay. PMI's CAPM page cites Forbes for an average of $100,750 for CAPM-certified project managers in the US. That figure describes people already working as project managers, so it is not a guide to pay in a first coordinator or analyst job. For pay by role and country, see our project-manager role page.
CAPM or the Google Project Management Certificate?
The CAPM is an exam-based certification from PMI; the Google certificate is a Coursera course program. In our October 2026 count, the Google certificate appeared in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads, against 982 for the CAPM (Adzuna). Our CAPM vs Google Project Management comparison covers cost and time.
