Is the PMP certification worth it?
24% of project manager job ads in the United States name the PMP (14,183 of 59,273, Adzuna, October 2026)
PMP certification is worth it if you already lead projects and want project-manager jobs in the US, India or Brazil. The PMP is named in 24% of 59,273 US project-manager ads (October 2026, Adzuna). It is not a first-job credential: PMI requires two to five years of leading projects. The exam route costs $554 to $655 before training. How we count ads.
The experience you need depends on your education: two years with a degree from a PMI-accredited (GAC) program, three with another bachelor's degree, four with an associate's degree and five with only a secondary-school diploma. In the UK, PRINCE2 appears in more ads than the PMP.
Verdict by situation:
- Three or more years leading projects, applying in the US, India or Brazil: take the PMP.
- Applying in the UK: start with PRINCE2 (UK section, PMP vs PRINCE2).
- No project-lead experience yet: start with the CAPM (who should skip the PMP).
- Working on a Scrum team: check PMP vs Scrum master first.

Is PMP certification worth it in 2026, by country?
One pattern stands out. Employers name the PMP in three main markets (the US, India and Brazil); the UK figure is in the next section.
The US figure comes from 59,273 ads. India's share is 24% of 2,413 ads. Brazil's share is 35%, but it comes from only 281 ads for gerente de projetos, so it can move by several points from month to month. Mexico (60 ads) and Spain (127 ads) are too small to read much into yet.
The data shows where the PMP is a common filter. It does not show that employers whose ads leave it out would ignore it: the holders quoted further down describe hiring managers who still read it as proof of experience.

Is PMP certification worth it in the UK?
Less than in the US. The PMP appears in 6.9% of 6,205 UK project-manager ads, while PRINCE2 appears in 14% of the ads. If you plan to work in the UK, PRINCE2 Foundation is the more often requested first step and needs no experience; our PMP or PRINCE2 comparison for UK jobs covers the order in detail. The 430 UK ads that do name the PMP show it still has buyers there.

Is PMP certification worth it in India?
Yes, for experienced project leads. The PMP is named in 24% of Indian project-manager ads, against 8.6% for PRINCE2 and 1.2% for the CAPM. Agile appears in 30% of Indian ads (12% of US ads), so pairing the PMP with real agile delivery experience matters there. The India sample is 2,413 ads (US: 59,273), so treat it as a signal, not a precise figure.
Which jobs ask for the PMP?
We count the PMP against project-manager ads, using the job title employers use in each country. That is where the credential is designed to sit: PMI describes it as proof that you lead projects, and its eligibility rules require that you already do. We have not yet counted program-manager ads, the other role PMI's credential is aimed at, so there is no figure for that role here.
Because the PMP itself requires two to five years of leading projects, depending on your education, an ad that names it is in effect asking for that experience. That makes it a mid-career filter, and it explains why the credential does little for someone looking for a first project job. For the full list of credentials employers name for this job, and how they rank in each country, see which certificates employers name for project managers. The wider picture, including agile and risk credentials, is on our page of project-management certifications we track.
What the exam covers vs what ads ask for
PMI rebuilt the exam in July 2026. The three domains are now People (33% of questions), Process (41%) and Business Environment (26%, up from 8%), and the new outline adds AI and sustainability in project scenarios (PMI, new-exam page). About 40% of questions use predictive (waterfall) methods and 60% use agile or hybrid approaches, according to PMI's July 2026 exam content outline.
Now compare the ads. Agile is named in 12% of US project-manager ads and Jira in 5.2%, against 24% for the PMP (October 2026, Adzuna). Our reading: employers who name the PMP are using it as shorthand for general project leadership. They expect tools such as Jira to be learned on the job.
If your target jobs are on software teams that run Scrum, a dedicated agile credential may match the ads better. See PMI-ACP vs PMP for agile teams.

How much does the PMP cost?
PMI sets one price for members and a higher one for everyone else. These are the prices in PMI's main online store, which we read on October 3, 2026. PMI uses regional pricing in some countries, so your checkout price may differ.
| Item | PMI member | Non-member |

| PMP exam | $405 | $655 |
| Exam retake (each) | $275 | $375 |
| PMI membership, per year | $139 | not applicable |

| PMI's own on-demand PMP exam prep course (meets the 35-hour rule) | $699 | $799 |
| PMI practice exam | $99 | $99 |
| Renewal every three years (as reported by training providers; PMI's renewal handbook gives no fixed amount) | $60 | $150 |
Source: PMI online store (pmi.org), prices read October 3, 2026; renewal fee as published for the CAPM by PMI and reported for the PMP by training providers (4PMTI); PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements handbook says only that renewal fees depend on membership and region. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
Total cost in one view: the cheapest realistic route for a PMI member is $139 for membership, the $10 application fee for new members, $405 for the exam and a self-paced 35-hour course. PM PrepCast listed its basic 35-hour course at $139.50 on sale (regular price $279) on October 3, 2026; PMI's own course is $699. That puts the cash cost at about $694 to $1,253. Add the study time: holders on Reddit report anything from about 70 hours to six weeks of near-full-time study.
Joining PMI first is the cheaper way to take the exam once. Membership ($139), PMI's $10 application fee for new members and the member exam fee ($405) come to $554, against $655 without membership, a saving of $101. If you fail once, the gap grows: $829 as a member against $1,030 as a non-member. Forbes Advisor lists the fee as $425 for members and $675 for non-members; PMI's own store showed $405 and $655 when we checked, so check the price on pmi.org before you pay.
Over a three-year cycle, keeping membership ($417, plus the $10 application fee in the first year) plus the member exam and renewal fees comes to about $892, against about $805 for a non-member. So join for the exam year, and keep membership only if you will use its free webinars to earn PDUs.
Self-paced courses from any provider count toward the 35 hours, as long as they end with an assessment; books and practice exams on their own do not count (PMI exam content outline, July 2026). Some employers pay for the exam or give a bonus after you pass (holders on Reddit describe both), so ask before you buy anything.

How long is PMP certification valid?
A PMP lasts three years at a time. To keep it, you earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle, at least 35 of them from education, and pay the renewal fee (PMI Continuing Certification Requirements handbook, April 2026). One PDU is one hour of learning, teaching, volunteering or similar work.
If you miss the deadline, PMI suspends the credential for one year. During that year you may not call yourself a PMP. If you still have not renewed after that year, it expires, and the only way back is a new application, new fees and the exam again (PMI CCR handbook).
The July 2026 exam change does not affect people who already hold the PMP; PMI says existing certifications stay valid and renewal rules are unchanged.

How hard is the PMP exam, and how long does it take?
The exam has 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. Of those questions, 170 are scored and 10 are unscored trial questions. Since July 2026 it includes case-study sets and questions built around charts and diagrams, along with multiple choice, matching and drag-and-drop (PMI exam content outline, July 2026). You can take it at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a proctor.
Once PMI approves your application, you have one year to pass, with up to three attempts. After three failures you wait a year before you can apply again.
On preparation time, PMI says studying "often takes several months." Holders on Reddit report a wide range: one passed after six weeks of near-full-time study, four to five hours a day; another estimated 70 to 100 hours in total. The scenario questions assume you have run real projects, which is why PMI asks for the experience before the exam.

PMP certification pass rate
PMI does not publish a pass rate or a passing score. Any pass rate in a course ad is the training company's own claim about its students. PMI's exam content outline tells candidates to be careful with organizations that make misleading claims about exam success. Third-party sites cite unofficial first-attempt estimates; none of them comes from PMI, and we could not trace them to a published dataset.
Does PMP certification increase salary?
PMI's own salary survey says PMP holders earn more, and the gap is real in that data. Its 2025 survey of 14,628 project professionals in 21 countries found a US median of $135,000 for PMP holders and $109,157 for respondents without it, a gap of about 24%. Across all 21 countries the gap was 17%. US respondents who had held the PMP for more than ten years reported a median of $173,000 (PMI Earning Power, 14th edition, fielded March to April 2025).
Read those figures for what they are. The respondents chose to answer a PMI survey, and PMP holders are, by definition, people with at least two to five years of project experience. Part of the gap is likely experience, seniority and industry. The survey cannot tell you how much your own pay would rise from passing the exam.
For a neutral baseline, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay of all US project management specialists at $102,320 in May 2025, certified or not. It projects 7% job growth from 2025 to 2035, which it calls much faster than average, with about 76,500 openings a year.

Texas has more project management specialist jobs than any other state (138,960 in May 2025), California is second, and California pays about $22,000 more at the median (BLS). The middle half of US project management specialists earn between $78,440 and $133,100 (BLS, May 2025), which is a useful range to check a job offer against.
PMP certification salary in India, Canada, the UAE and South Africa
PMI's survey covers 21 countries, but the country-level medians sit in an interactive tool that only PMI members can open. Salary figures for India, Canada, the UAE or South Africa that circulate online without a named source are not repeated here. If you join PMI for the exam discount, the salary tool is included, and it is a direct source for your country.
For India, our own data gives the demand side: the PMP is named in 24% of Indian project-manager ads (October 2026). We do not yet count ads in Canada, the UAE or South Africa.
Does PMP certification help you get a job?
It helps you get through the first screen; it does not get you the offer on its own. In this month's US count, 24% of project-manager ads name the PMP, and for those roles, in our reading, a recruiter or screening software can use it as a filter. The BLS says certification is "not always required" for project management specialists.
Holders on Reddit describe the same split. In a December 2025 thread asking whether the PMP helped people land a job, several said it got them interviews they had not been getting. One reply read, in full, "It got me the interview." Others said experience still decided the offer. In July 2026, a newly certified candidate with about five years of delivery and development work reported 20 rejections. The most upvoted reply said the PMP can put you on the shortlist, and that the offer still depends on experience in a crowded US market.
A degree can matter more than the PMP. In a November 2025 thread, a project manager with a PMP and no degree lost an offer at a large health insurer to a candidate with a degree and no PMP. Hiring managers in the replies said they would make the same choice. Our reading: the PMP adds to experience and education; it does not replace either.
Who the PMP is for, and who should skip it
Take it if you have led projects for three years or more (four or five without a bachelor's degree) and you plan to change employers. It pays off when you apply to large employers, government contractors or consultancies in the US, India or Brazil. Holders on Reddit report that raises came from new jobs more often than from their current employer, and one government contractor said some contracts require an active PMP.
Wait, or start somewhere else, in these cases:
- You have no project experience yet. You cannot apply. The CAPM certification is PMI's entry-level credential and needs no experience.
- You want UK jobs. PRINCE2 is named in more UK ads.
- You work on software teams that run Scrum. A Scrum credential may match the ads better.
- You are already senior and not job hunting. Your track record already counts for more, and the renewal fee comes back every three years.

Cheaper or faster paths, and alternatives
The CAPM is named in 1.7% of US project-manager ads, a far smaller share than the PMP. It is also cheaper and open to beginners: $225 for members ($300 otherwise), 23 hours of training, a secondary-school diploma and a 150-question, three-hour exam (PMI). An active CAPM also covers the 35-hour training requirement when you later apply for the PMP. Our CAPM vs PMP comparison for people without the experience works through the timing.
PRINCE2 Foundation has no prerequisite and a 60-question, one-hour exam with a 60% passing score (PeopleCert). A PMP holder can skip Foundation and go straight to PRINCE2 Practitioner, since PeopleCert accepts the PMP as a prerequisite.
Is the "Google PMP certification" worth it?
There is no Google PMP. The closest match is the Google Project Management Certificate on Coursera, which is a course certificate, not a PMI certification. Employers rarely name it: it appeared in 19 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads in October 2026, against 14,183 for the PMP.
It still has a use. Google says the program takes about six months at 10 hours a week, counts as more than 100 hours of project management education and helps prepare for the CAPM. Because PMI accepts self-paced courses that end with an assessment, it should also cover the 35-hour training requirement for a later PMP application. For someone without experience, it is a structured way to learn the basics, as long as the certificate itself is not expected to open doors. See the Google Project Management Certificate page and Google's certificate compared with the PMP.
PMP certification vs Scrum master certifications
They answer different job ads. In US Scrum-master ads, the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) is named in 22% of 946 ads (October 2026, Adzuna), while the PMP targets project-manager ads. Scrum Alliance asks for 16 hours of training (a class can run two to three days) and a one-hour, 50-question test, with no experience requirement, so it is the faster route if your target is a Scrum team. Our PMP vs Scrum master comparison covers who needs which.
Specialist credentials to add later
Several credentials make more sense next to the PMP than instead of it:
- Agile delivery: the PMI-ACP.
- Risk management: the PMI-RMP risk credential.
- Process improvement: PMP vs Six Sigma, with separate pages for the Six Sigma Green Belt and the Six Sigma Black Belt.
- IT service management: ITIL vs PMP for IT service roles.
- Security programs: CISM vs PMP for security program leads.
Is PMP certification worth it? What holders say on Reddit
We read eight recent threads from r/pmp, r/PMCareers and r/projectmanagement (September 2025 to July 2026) to see how holders answer whether PMP certification is worth it. Reddit is a self-selected sample, so these are themes, not statistics.
- More interviews, same hiring rules. The most common report is more recruiter calls and interviews after adding the PMP to a resume, with experience deciding who gets hired (r/pmp, December 2025).
- Hiring managers disagree. In a November 2025 thread, one reply said, "If you are looking for a new PM job, then yes." A manager who had built several project offices said they had not ranked PMP holders above others (r/projectmanagement).
- The raise comes with a new job. On pay, holders on Reddit mostly say their current employer gave little or nothing, sometimes a small hourly raise or a one-time bonus, while moving jobs paid more (r/pmp, September 2025). One holder reported a 55% increase, from a new job found after months of applying (r/pmp, November 2025).
- Degree first. Several hiring managers said they would choose a relevant degree over the PMP when experience is similar (r/projectmanagement, November 2025).
- Keep it once you have it. Holders who asked whether renewal was worth paying for were mostly told to join PMI and earn PDUs through free webinars, since a lapsed PMP can rule you out of contracts that require one (r/PMCareers, January 2026).
How to get the PMP, step by step
- Check your route. Count the months you have led projects in the last ten years, without double-counting overlaps. You need 60 months with a secondary-school diploma, 48 with an associate's degree, 36 with a bachelor's degree or 24 with a degree from a PMI-accredited (GAC) program (PMI exam content outline, July 2026). The 48-month route for associate's degrees is new in 2026.
- Complete 35 hours of training. Any self-paced course with an end-of-course assessment counts. From December 1, 2026, live classes count only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited university teaches them; training finished before that date stays valid.
- Apply on pmi.org. List each project with dates, hours and a short description of what you led. With three or more years of projects to describe one by one, set aside real time for this step. Some applications are picked for audit at random. You then have 90 days to send proof of education, experience and training, and PMI says the review takes about 5 to 7 business days (PMI certification handbook).
- Join PMI, then pay. Membership ($139) plus the $10 application fee and the member fee ($405) costs less than the non-member fee ($655).
- Schedule the exam at a Pearson VUE test center or online, within your one-year eligibility window.
- Pass, then plan renewal. Start logging PDUs right away; 60 are due every three years.

Questions people ask
Is PMP certification still valuable?
Yes, for experienced project leads in markets where employers name it. In October 2026 the PMP appeared in 24% of US project-manager ads; in India the share was 24% (Adzuna). In the UK, PRINCE2 is named in 14% of project-manager ads and the PMP in 6.9%. PMI reports 1.7 million holders, so the PMP no longer sets you apart on its own; it mostly gets you past the first screen, and your project record has to do the rest.
Is PMP still relevant in 2026?
Yes. PMI rebuilt the exam in July 2026: the Business Environment domain grew from 8% to 26% of questions, AI and sustainability were added, and about 60% of questions now use agile or hybrid approaches. Employers still name it often: the PMP is named in 24% of US project-manager ads in our October 2026 count. If you already hold the PMP, the new exam does not affect you; PMI says existing certifications stay valid.
Can I pass PMP in 3 months?
Many people do, if they already lead projects at work. PMI says studying often takes several months. Holders on Reddit report anything from six weeks of near-full-time study (four to five hours a day) to about 70 to 100 hours spread over a few months. Three months at an hour or more on most days fits that range. The exam is 180 scenario questions in 240 minutes, and you get up to three attempts within one year of approval, with retakes at $275 for members.
Is PMP certification worth it in Canada?
We do not yet count Canadian job ads, so we cannot give a Canadian share. The PMP is a single global credential from PMI, with the same exam everywhere; PMI uses regional pricing, so check the fee at checkout. PMI's salary survey covers 21 countries; its country-level results are open to PMI members through the salary tool. Until we add Canada, the US figure (24% of project-manager ads) is the closest comparison we can offer, and we label it as US data.
Which PMP certification is most recognized?
There is only one PMP: the Project Management Professional, issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is accredited by ANSI against the ISO/IEC 17024 standard for certification bodies. Courses that promise a "PMP certificate" come from training providers; only PMI awards the credential, after you meet the experience rule and pass its exam. If you want a project credential with no experience requirement, PMI's CAPM is the entry-level option. In the UK, PRINCE2 from PeopleCert is the most common alternative.
PMP certification vs PMI: what is the difference?
PMI is the organization; the PMP is one of its certifications. The Project Management Institute writes the exam, sets the eligibility rules, sells membership ($139 a year in its main store) and runs renewal. The PMP (Project Management Professional) is its credential for people who already lead projects. PMI also offers the CAPM for beginners, the PMI-ACP for agile and the PMI-RMP for risk. You do not need to be a PMI member to take the PMP, but members pay $405 for the exam instead of $655.
PMP certification vs MBA: which helps more?
They do different jobs. An MBA is a degree that takes one to two years and teaches business broadly; the PMP is a certification that proves you already lead projects, for a few hundred dollars plus study time. Reddit threads from hiring managers suggest that a degree often weighs more than the PMP when experience is similar, and the BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry requirement for project management specialists. If you have a degree and project experience, the PMP is the cheaper next step. An MBA makes more sense if you are aiming at general management.
SAFe Agilist vs PMP: which is better?
They suit different employers. SAFe Agilist is a course-based certificate for organizations that run the Scaled Agile Framework across many teams; the PMP is a broad project leadership credential that requires two to five years of leading projects, depending on your education. If the jobs you want mention SAFe or release trains, the SAFe course is quick and directly relevant. For general project-manager roles, the PMP is named far more often: 24% of US project-manager ads in October 2026. We do not yet count SAFe in job ads.
How long does PMP certification last?
Three years at a time. To renew, you earn 60 professional development units in each three-year cycle, at least 35 of them from education, and pay a renewal fee that training providers report as $60 for members and $150 for others. If you miss the deadline, PMI suspends the credential for a year; after that it expires, and you would have to apply, pay and pass the exam again. PMI members can earn many of the units through free webinars.
