Is PMI-RMP worth it? What the exam costs and what job ads show
3 of 59,273 project manager job ads in the United States name the PMI-RMP (Adzuna, October 2026)
The PMI-RMP is worth it if you already do risk work on projects and the employers you target name it in their ads. In October 2026, the exact phrase pmi-rmp appeared in 3 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads and 13 of the 30,691 US program-manager ads (Adzuna, a job-ad search site).
The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) is the Project Management Institute's (PMI) certification for finding, analyzing and responding to project risks. You need 12 to 36 months of project risk work first. The exam costs $670, or $520 for PMI members.
Is PMI-RMP worth it, by starting point:
- You already keep a risk register (a list of a project's risks, owners and planned responses) or rate risks by likelihood and impact: take it if the ads you read, or your employer, name it.
- You manage projects in general and risk is one part of the job: compare it with the PMP, PMI's general project-management certification, and check which one your target ads name.
- You are new to project work: you cannot apply yet, because every route needs at least 12 months of risk experience. The CAPM, PMI's certification for people with little project experience, is the one to compare. Next step: take on risk tasks in your current work, then re-check sets A, B and C once you have 12 months.
- You are applying in the UK: PRINCE2 answers a different need. It is a method for running projects, not a risk specialism, so pick it for the method and the PMI-RMP for risk work.
With no target job yet, search three ads for your role this week and see if any name the PMI-RMP.

Is PMI-RMP worth it? What the job ads show
It is worth it when the ads for the jobs you want name it, and our count shows how often US ads do. In October 2026, Adzuna listed 59,273 US ads found by searching for project manager, and the exact phrase pmi-rmp appeared in 3 of them. In US ads found by searching for program manager, the phrase appeared in 13 of the 30,691 ads in the same month.
These are counts of one exact phrase. An ad that writes out "Risk Management Professional" without the abbreviation may not be counted, so each figure is a minimum (see how we count ads). At counts of this size, one or two ads more or less in a month change the picture, so read them as a sign of interest, not a stable measure.
Outside the US, the phrase pmi-rmp appeared in none of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
In India, it appeared in none of the 2,413 project-manager ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
Our reading: the PMI-RMP is a specialist credential, and PMI will not let you apply without project risk experience. An ad that names it may be asking for that experience as well, and the ads cannot show whether employers weigh the certificate above the experience itself. For the credentials employers name in US, UK and Indian project-manager ads, see which certifications project-manager ads ask for.
Who can take the PMI-RMP?
Anyone who meets one of PMI's three eligibility sets. Each set combines a level of education, months of recent project risk experience and hours of risk education:
| Set | Education | Risk experience in the last 5 years | Risk training |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | High school or secondary school diploma | 36 months | 40 hours |
| B | Bachelor's degree or higher | 24 months | 30 hours |
| C | Bachelor's degree or higher from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC) | 12 months | 30 hours |
Source: PMI, PMI-RMP certification page, read October 12, 2026. "Accredited" here means your degree program carries accreditation from PMI's Global Accreditation Center; your school can tell you whether yours does. PMI's page headline says 3-5 years of experience, but the three sets above, not the headline, set the requirement.
PMI's 2022 exam content outline (its official blueprint of what the exam covers) adds two rules for the experience. It must fall within the last five consecutive years before you apply. It can be unpaid as long as it happened in a professional setting; school projects or planning personal events do not count.
The training rule is looser on timing: PMI sets no time limit, so risk courses from any year count. Self-study does not count. PMI's outline names reading books, watching instructional videos and sessions with coaches or mentors as examples it will not accept.
How much does the PMI-RMP cost?
The PMI-RMP exam costs $670, or $520 for PMI members, at PMI's US-dollar prices read October 3, 2026. PMI charges the exam fee only after it accepts your application, when you are ready to schedule. PMI membership is not required.
| Item | PMI member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| PMI-RMP exam | $520 | $670 |
| Exam retake (each) | $335 | $435 |
| Hand rescore (a manual re-check of your exam score; 2022 outline) | $45 | $45 |
| PMI membership, per year | see PMI's membership page | not applicable |
| Renewal every three years | not published | not published |
Source: PMI's price, read October 3, 2026 (exam and retake, US dollars). PMI-RMP exam content outline, 2022 (hand rescore). PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook, its rules guide for keeping a certification, April 2026, which gives no renewal amount. PMI says its fees follow regional and membership pricing, so the price in your country may differ.
Without membership, one attempt costs $670. One attempt plus one retake comes to $670 plus $435, for a total of $1,105. A member pays $520 plus $335, or $855, for the same two attempts, plus the membership fee. With a third attempt, the non-member total is $670 + $435 + $435 = $1,540 and the member total is $520 + $335 + $335 = $1,190.
These are exam fees only, not the whole path cost: training and membership come on top. The member discount is $150 on the exam ($670 minus $520) and $100 on a retake ($435 minus $335). The test: join first only if the membership price shown at PMI checkout is below the saving, $150 on the exam or $250 with one retake (150 + 100). The price is on PMI's membership page, which also lists discounts on renewals and study material.
The 30 or 40 hours of risk education PMI requires is the other cost. Course prices depend on the provider, and we did not collect them.

How hard is the PMI-RMP exam?
PMI does not publish a passing score, so the difficulty cannot be put in a number. PMI's 2020 handbook says only that the passing score for all PMI exams is set by "sound psychometric analysis" (statistical testing of how well exam questions measure skill), with subject matter experts. What PMI does publish is the format.
The current exam has 115 questions in 150 minutes. Of those, 100 are scored and 15 are pretest questions: unscored items PMI is trying out for future exams, mixed in with the rest. Questions are multiple-choice or multiple-answer select (pick more than one correct answer). You can take the exam at a test center or online proctored, which means from home while a remote supervisor watches. PMI offers it in English, Arabic and Chinese (Simplified).
An optional 10-minute break appears after the first section, about 58 questions in, once you have reviewed your answers. After the break, you cannot go back to those questions, so review them first.
The exam covers five domains (subject areas), with these weights in PMI's 2022 exam content outline:
| Domain | Share of the exam |
|---|---|
| Risk Strategy and Planning | 22% |
| Risk Identification | 23% |
| Risk Analysis | 23% |
| Risk Response | 13% |
| Monitor and Close Risks | 19% |
Source: PMI, PMI-RMP Exam Content Outline, 2022.
PMI says predictive, agile and hybrid approaches appear throughout all five domains. Predictive means planning the whole project up front, agile means working in short cycles and adjusting as you go, and hybrid mixes the two.

Which PMI-RMP exam version is current?
The 115-question, 150-minute exam is current. PMI still hosts its 2020 PMI-RMP handbook, revised August 7, 2020, which describes an older exam with 170 questions in 210 minutes. A prep guide or course built on that handbook describes a longer exam than the one you will take. Trust PMI's PMI-RMP certification page, which lists 115 questions and 150 minutes, and the 2022 exam content outline, which gives two and a half hours. One stray sentence later in the same 2022 outline still mentions "three and a half hours"; it contradicts the outline's own exam-time statement and PMI's current page.
What happens if you fail the PMI-RMP exam?
You can try again. PMI allows up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period, the window in which you must pass. After three attempts, you wait one year from the last exam before you can reapply. If the year ends without a pass, you must reapply.
How long does it take to get the PMI-RMP?
The experience rule sets the pace: 12, 24 or 36 months of risk work on projects within the last five years, depending on your education. PMI gives no study-time estimate, and the Reddit posts we collected hold too few reports of PMI-RMP study time to give a range.
The steps once you have the experience:
- Risk education from a course, not self-study (30 or 40 hours).
- The application on pmi.org, where you record your experience and training.
- The exam fee, paid after PMI accepts the application.
- A one-year eligibility period with up to three exam attempts.

PMI-RMP renewal: 30 PDUs every three years
The PMI-RMP is valid for three years. To renew it, you earn 30 professional development units (PDUs, credits for courses and other professional activity) in each three-year cycle and pay the renewal fee (PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements, or CCR, Handbook, April 2026). For comparison, the same handbook sets 60 PDUs for the PMP and 15 for the CAPM.
At least 18 of the 30 PDUs must be education PDUs, meaning earned by learning activities such as courses. Of those 18, at least 4 must come from each of PMI's three skill areas: Ways of Working (methods and techniques), Power Skills (working with people) and Business Acumen (understanding the business). The other 6 can be in any area. The remaining 12 can come from giving back, such as volunteering or mentoring, and working as a professional counts for no more than 4 PDUs per cycle: 18 + 12 = 30.
PMI audits a random share of holders, a spot check. If you are picked, you send proof of the PDUs you claimed, so keep your records for at least 18 months after your cycle ends. Renewal fees "are subject to membership and regional pricing," and PMI points you to your myPMI dashboard (your account page on pmi.org) for the current amount.

PMI-RMP salary: what the sources can and cannot say
No official source we found gives a salary for PMI-RMP holders. The public part of PMI's salary survey page (2025 edition, 21 countries) reports a result for PMP holders and does not mention the PMI-RMP; its country and role tool is for members and we did not read it. PMI's PMI-RMP page cites Fortune on how much relevant certifications can raise pay in general, which is not a PMI-RMP figure.
Our reading: pay follows the job title, the employer and your years of experience. The PMI-RMP itself requires that experience, so a pay gap between holders and others would be hard to separate from it. Check pay in ads for your own job title; for pay data on PMI's general credential, see our PMP page.
Is PMI-RMP worth it on Reddit?
We cannot tell from Reddit. In the Reddit posts we collected about the PMI-RMP, we found one post and no replies, too few to report what people think of it. The job-ad counts in the section above are the firmer guide.
PMI-RMP or another PMI certification?
The PMI-RMP is one of several PMI certifications, each for a different stage or specialty. The PMP covers project management as a whole. The PMI-ACP covers agile practice. The CAPM is the entry point for people with little experience. None of them is a prerequisite for the PMI-RMP.
To weigh them side by side, start with CAPM vs PMP or PMI-ACP vs PMP. The project-manager role page shows which of these credentials employers name in each country.

What we did not check
- Prices of risk training courses.
- The current PMI membership price: PMI's membership page and PMI's price list did not show the same figure when we read them.
- The PMI-RMP renewal fee, which PMI refers holders to their myPMI dashboard for.
- A salary figure for PMI-RMP holders, because we found no official one. The country and role tool on PMI's salary survey page is for members, and we did not read it.

Questions people ask
Is PMI-RMP worth it, according to Reddit?
We cannot say. In the Reddit posts we collected about the PMI-RMP (PMI Risk Management Professional), we found one post and no replies, too few to report what people think of it. Job ads give a firmer answer: in October 2026, the exact phrase pmi-rmp appeared in 3 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads and 13 of the 30,691 US program-manager ads (Adzuna, a job-ad search site).
What is the PMI-RMP salary?
No official source we found gives a salary for PMI-RMP holders. The public part of PMI's salary survey page, the 2025 edition covering 21 countries, reports a result for PMP holders and does not mention the PMI-RMP; its country and role tool is for members and we did not read it. PMI's own PMI-RMP page cites Fortune on how much relevant certifications can raise pay in general, which is not a PMI-RMP figure. Pay follows the job title, the employer and your experience.
How much does the PMI-RMP cost?
The PMI-RMP exam costs $670, or $520 for members of PMI (the Project Management Institute, which runs the exam). A retake costs $435, or $335 for members. These are PMI's US-dollar prices, read October 3, 2026; prices vary by region and membership. Training for the 30 or 40 required hours of risk education is extra, and PMI publishes no single renewal fee.
Is PMI membership worth it for the PMI-RMP exam?
Only if the membership price shown at PMI checkout is below the saving, or if you want its other benefits. At PMI's US-dollar prices read October 3, 2026, members save $150 on the PMI-RMP exam ($670 minus $520) and $100 on each retake ($435 minus $335), so $250 with one retake (150 + 100). The membership price can depend on your region.
Does the PMI-RMP expire?
Yes. The PMI-RMP is valid for three years. To renew it, you earn 30 professional development units (PDUs, credits for courses and other professional activity) in each three-year cycle, at least 18 of them in education (earned by learning activities such as courses). You also pay a renewal fee that depends on membership and region (PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook, April 2026). You do not take the exam again.
How hard is the PMI-RMP exam?
PMI does not publish a passing score, so the difficulty of the PMI-RMP exam cannot be put in a number. The current exam has 115 questions in 150 minutes: 100 scored and 15 unscored pretest questions that PMI is trying out for future exams. You can take it at a test center or online with a remote supervisor, and you get up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period (the window in which you must pass).
How long does it take to get the PMI-RMP?
The experience rule sets the pace. PMI asks for 12 to 36 months of project risk management experience within the last five years, depending on your education, plus 30 or 40 hours of risk training. You then have a one-year eligibility period (the window in which you must pass) to pass the exam. PMI gives no study-time estimate, and we found too few reports to give one.
Can you take the PMI-RMP without the PMP?
Yes. None of PMI's three eligibility routes for the PMI-RMP lists the PMP (Project Management Professional). Each route asks for a school diploma or a degree, 12 to 36 months of project risk management experience earned in the five years before you apply, and 30 or 40 hours of risk courses.
