Is the PMI-ACP worth it? What job ads and Reddit show
1.1% of project manager job ads in the United States name the PMI-ACP (673 of 59,273, Adzuna, October 2026)
The PMI-ACP is worth it for agile practitioners who have the agile experience PMI requires and want project-manager jobs whose ads name it. In October 2026, 673 of 59,273 US project-manager ads named it (Adzuna). On Reddit, posters ask about eligibility, what to take after the PMP and how to prepare.
The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) is the agile certification of the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI calls it "the industry's only agnostic, experienced-based, ISO-accredited exam": it tests agile practice in general, not one framework such as Scrum. Before you apply, you need up to two years of agile experience (or an active PMP) and 21 hours of agile training. The exam costs $495, or $435 for PMI members.
Verdict by situation:
- Two or more years on agile teams, applying for project-manager jobs: take it if the ads you read name it.
- Already holding an active agile certification, such as a Scrum certificate, for more than a year: your path may be shorter, because PMI credits an agile certification held more than a year with 12 months of experience.
- Holding the PMP: you meet the experience rule already, so take the PMI-ACP only if your target ads or employer value agile; see PMI-ACP vs PMP.
- Scrum master or product owner not applying for project-manager jobs: see the Scrum master certification guide and the Scrum-master job page for which credentials those ads name.
- New to agile work, with no team experience: you cannot apply yet. Start with a Scrum certification or the CAPM, and compare them in CAPM vs PMI-ACP.

Is PMI-ACP worth it? What the job ads show
Yes, if the ads you target name it. The count below shows how often they do. In October 2026, Adzuna listed 59,273 US ads with "project manager" in the job title, and 673 of them named the PMI-ACP. We search for the phrase pmi-acp, so ads that write the full name without the abbreviation may be missed, and the count is a minimum (see how we count ads).
In India, the PMI-ACP appeared in 1.9% of the ads for project managers in October 2026, from a sample of 2,413 Indian ads (Adzuna). In a sample of that size, a handful of ads can move the share by a percentage point.
In Brazil, the PMI-ACP appeared in 9% of the ads for gerente de projetos in October 2026 (Adzuna). That sample is only 281 Brazilian ads. Read the share as a sign of interest, not a stable figure.
In the UK, the PMI-ACP appeared in 12 of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). For UK jobs, PRINCE2 and the APM PMQ are the credentials to compare first.
In France, the PMI-ACP appeared in one of the 10,557 French chef de projet ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
The PMI-ACP is itself proof of experience: PMI will not let you apply without agile work experience or an active PMP. So an ad that names it is, in effect, asking for agile experience or a PMP as well. In the same US project-manager ads, agile appears as a skill in 12% and the PMI-ACP in 1.1% (October 2026, Adzuna). Our reading: the PMI-ACP proves the experience PMI requires; the ads do not show whether employers weigh it above the experience itself. For every credential employers name in these ads, country by country, see which certifications project-manager ads ask for.
Who can take the PMI-ACP?
Anyone with a secondary-school diploma, 21 hours of agile training and enough agile experience. PMI's PMI-ACP page lists four ways to meet the experience rule; you need only one:
| Route | Agile experience needed |
|---|---|
| Experience only | 2 years of agile experience in the past 5 years |
| Degree from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC) | 1 year of agile experience |
| Active third-party agile certification, held for more than a year | 1 year of agile experience |
| Active PMP | none beyond the PMP |
Source: PMI, PMI-ACP certification page and PMI-ACP Examination Content Outline (March 2026), checked October 5, 2026.
The third-party route is the one that matters for Scrum masters and product owners. PMI credits 12 months toward the two years for an agile certification that shows knowledge of agile approaches and principles. PMI's content outline names Scrum and SAFe certifications as examples, along with "other agile certifications." It does not give a list, so confirm yours with PMI. The certification must be active and held for more than a year; it then replaces one of the two years of experience.
The 21 hours of agile training can come from a PMI Authorized PMI-ACP Exam Prep Course, an Authorized Training Partner or a third-party course. PMI's outline says the coursework must be finished before you submit the application, with proof of completion.
PMI's March 2026 exam content outline says the experience rules were realigned to include product development roles and to give credit for prior learning. Neither the outline nor the PMI-ACP page gives an effective date for the new rule. PMI's 2022 PMI-ACP handbook, still hosted on pmi.org, shows an older experience rule, so a prep guide written before 2026 may list different requirements. Check pmi.org before you apply.

Can you take the PMI-ACP without the PMP?
Yes. The PMP is one of the four experience routes, not a prerequisite. A poster on r/pmp, an IT director, asked exactly this (r/pmp). Without a PMP, you qualify through agile experience alone, or through one year of it plus a GAC-accredited degree or an active agile certification. Our PMI-ACP vs PMP comparison covers which to take first.
How much does the PMI-ACP cost?
The exam costs $495, or $435 for PMI members, in PMI's US-dollar store. PMI charges the exam fee only after it accepts your application, when you are ready to schedule.
| Item | PMI member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| PMI-ACP exam | $435 | $495 |
| Exam retake (each) | $335 | $395 |
| PMI membership, per year | $139 | not applicable |
| Renewal every three years | not published | not published |
Source: PMI online store (pmi.org), US-dollar prices checked October 3, 2026; renewal fee: PMI CCR Handbook (April 2026), which gives no amount. Analysis: CertWorthIt. Prices are US dollars from PMI's US store; PMI's local stores may charge different amounts, so check yours at checkout.
For the PMI-ACP, joining PMI does not pay for itself on the exam alone. A member pays $139 plus $435, or $574, for the first attempt; a non-member pays $495. With one retake, the totals are $909 for a member and $890 for a non-member. Membership makes sense only if you will use what else it includes. PMI's renewal fee depends on membership and region, and it is shown only in your myPMI dashboard, so we cannot say whether membership lowers it for the PMI-ACP.
The other cost is the 21 hours of training. PMI accepts third-party courses as well as its own and its training partners' courses, so prices depend on the provider, and we did not collect them. Check that a course states its hours and gives a certificate of completion.

Which prep subscription is worth paying for?
A poster studying for the PMI-ACP asked whether a pricier prep-site membership was worth the extra money over a cheaper question bank (r/pmp). We do not test or rate third-party prep products. The one free check: compare the product's domain labels with PMI's own exam content outline. Another poster found a prep site mapping a Product task to the Delivery domain (r/pmp), so a mock-exam score by domain is only as good as that mapping.
How hard is the PMI-ACP?
PMI does not publish a passing score, so the difficulty cannot be put in a number. What PMI does publish is the format. The exam has 120 items in three hours: 100 scored and 20 unscored pretest items mixed in. Besides multiple choice, PMI uses multiple-response items, drag-and-drop-style items and exhibits.
Two rules matter on exam day. A 10-minute break appears after item 60, once you have reviewed your answers, and after it you cannot return to the first 60 items. The optional tutorial and survey at the start and end do not count toward the three hours. You can take the exam at a Pearson VUE test center, which PMI recommends, or online, in English or one of nine other languages.
The March 2026 exam content outline has four domains: Mindset (28% of the exam), Leadership (25%), Product (19%) and Delivery (28%). PMI's outline does not say when exams switch to it; check the PMI-ACP page for the exam you will sit before you buy prep material. PMI's PMI-ACP handbook says only that the passing score for all PMI exams is set by "sound psychometric analysis," without giving a number. In the PMI documents we read, there is no cut score and no rule for how an answered item counts toward a domain result.
If you fail, you can try again. PMI allows three attempts within the one-year eligibility period (PMI-ACP page). After three attempts, you wait one year from the last exam before you can reapply (PMI-ACP handbook, May 2022).

Am I ready for the PMI-ACP?
PMI gives no readiness test and publishes no pass rate in the documents we read, so there is no basis for a first-attempt probability; the one-year, three-attempt window is the safety net. The Reddit posts we collected hold too few reports to say what score on a mock exam predicts a pass. One poster with an MBA, Scrum training and agile work experience, scoring above 80% on practice exams, asked whether that was enough. They wrote that "my practical experience feels like it's hurting me more than helping" on exam-style questions (r/pmp).
Three checks you can make with PMI's own material:
- Read the task statements under each of the four domains in the outline and give yourself a real work example for each.
- Spend study time in proportion to the domain weights: Mindset and Delivery are 28% of the exam each, Product 19%.
- When a practice question looks wrong, check it against PMI's outline, not the prep site's explanation. The same poster reported errors in several question banks.
How long does it take to get the PMI-ACP?
The experience sets the pace: up to two years of agile work, depending on your route, before you can apply; an active PMP needs none beyond the PMP. After that, PMI gives no study-time estimate, and the Reddit posts we collected include fewer than 10 first-person reports of PMI-ACP study time, too few to give a range.
The steps after you qualify:
- 21 hours of agile training, finished before you apply.
- The application on pmi.org. PMI's 2022 PMI-ACP handbook describes random audits: if you are picked, you have 90 days to send your documents, and PMI processes them in five to seven days.
- A one-year eligibility period from approval, with up to three exam attempts. If the year ends without a pass, you must reapply.

PMI-ACP renewal: 30 PDUs every three years
The PMI-ACP lasts three years. To renew it, you earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle and pay the renewal fee (PMI, CCR Handbook, April 2026).
At least 18 of the 30 PDUs must be in education. Up to 12 can come from giving back to the profession. Working as an agile practitioner counts for no more than 4 PDUs per cycle for PMI-ACP holders.
PMI's CCR Handbook says renewal fees "are subject to membership and regional pricing" and sends you to the myPMI dashboard for the current amount. Payment is due no later than 90 days after the end of your cycle. PMI membership renews separately, with its own fee.

Yes, after three years, unless you renew it. The PMI-ACP renewal rules above apply to each new cycle, and no new exam is needed.
PMI-ACP salary: what the sources can and cannot say
No source we could verify publishes a salary for PMI-ACP holders. PMI's PMI-ACP page says 86% of PMI-ACP holders qualified for new opportunities and 84% gained recognition for career advancement. The page gives no year, sample or method for those figures, so read them as PMI's marketing, not as a measure of pay.
Our reading: pay follows the job title, the employer and your years of experience. The PMI-ACP itself requires that experience, so any pay gap between holders and others would be hard to separate from it. Our project-manager role page covers what employers ask for in that job, and the project management field page lists every project credential we track, including the PMI-RMP for risk specialists.
Is the PMI-ACP worth it after the PMP?
Yes, if you work on agile teams and want that work on paper, and if your target ads or employer value it. An active PMP meets the PMI-ACP experience rule on its own, so a PMP holder needs only the 21 hours of agile training before applying. Both credentials renew on three-year cycles with PDUs; the PMI-ACP needs 30.
A poster with 13 years of project management, who had just earned the PMP, asked whether the PMI-ACP, the PSM or the CSM should come next (r/pmp). The answer depends on the ads. Our Scrum-master job page shows which credentials those ads name; project-manager ads are where we count the PMI-ACP. Our comparisons set out the choices: PMI-ACP vs PSM, CSM vs PMI-ACP and PMI-ACP vs Scrum master certifications. The PMP page covers the PMP itself.
PMI-ACP vs SAFe
Choose by the employer. The PMI-ACP covers agile practice across methods and needs up to two years of experience, or an active PMP. SAFe Agilist, from Scaled Agile, is built on one framework, so it fits employers that run SAFe; check which your target ads name. A SAFe certification held for more than a year can also count toward the PMI-ACP experience rule (PMI, content outline, March 2026). For Scrum-side credentials, see PMI-ACP vs Scrum master certifications and our Scrum-master job page, which shows what those employers ask for.
Is PMI-ACP worth it? What people ask on Reddit
We grouped the questions behind "is PMI-ACP worth it" in the Reddit posts we collected (r/pmp and r/scrum, February to August 2026). We found only one post for each question, so read the list as real doubts, not as a measure of opinion.
- Whether certifications such as the CSPO or the PMI-ACP help, or whether experience is what counts. A poster planning a move into product management asked this (r/scrum). Our answer is in the job-ad section: experience decides, and the PMI-ACP requires it anyway.
- What comes after the PMP: the PMI-ACP, the PSM or the CSM (r/pmp). See the section on the PMI-ACP after the PMP.
- Whether you can take the PMI-ACP without the PMP (r/pmp). Yes; the PMP is one of four experience routes.
- Which prep membership is worth the money (r/pmp). We do not rate prep products; the poster was weighing two prep sites, not PMI membership. For PMI membership, see the cost section.
- Whether high mock scores mean you are ready, how to gain confidence with flawed practice questions and whether you will pass on the first attempt (r/pmp). See the readiness checks; PMI allows three attempts within one year of approval.
- Whether a wrong answer on a Product question can lower your Delivery score (r/pmp). PMI publishes no scoring rule for domains, so we cannot answer it; the question came from a prep site's mislabeled task.

Questions people ask
Can you take the PMI-ACP without the PMP?
Yes. The PMP is not a prerequisite for the PMI-ACP. PMI lists an active PMP as one of four ways to meet the PMI-ACP experience rule. The other three are two years of agile experience in the past five years, or one year of agile experience plus either a degree from a GAC-accredited program or an active third-party agile certification held for more than a year. Every route also needs 21 hours of agile training and a secondary-school diploma (PMI, checked October 5, 2026).
Is the PMI-ACP certification worth it if you already hold a Scrum certificate?
It can be, mainly because the Scrum certificate shortens the path. PMI names Scrum and SAFe certifications as examples, and credits an active third-party agile certification held for more than a year with 12 of the 24 months of agile experience the PMI-ACP requires. In job ads, the PMI-ACP appeared in 1.1% of the ads for US project managers in October 2026 (Adzuna). Take it if the project-manager ads you are reading name it, or if your employer pays.
Does the PMI-ACP expire?
Yes. The PMI-ACP runs on a three-year cycle. To keep it, you earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) in each cycle, at least 18 of them in education, and pay a renewal fee. PMI does not publish a single renewal fee for the PMI-ACP in the documents we read; it says the fee depends on membership and region and is shown in your myPMI dashboard (PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026).
What is the PMI-ACP salary?
No source we could verify publishes a salary for PMI-ACP holders. PMI's PMI-ACP page says 86% of holders qualified for new opportunities and 84% gained recognition for career advancement, but it gives no year, sample or method for those figures. What we can measure is demand: the PMI-ACP appeared in 1.1% of the ads for US project managers in October 2026 (Adzuna).
Is PMI membership worth it for the PMI-ACP exam alone?
No, not on the exam fee alone. At PMI's US-dollar store prices checked on October 3, 2026, a member pays $139 for membership plus $435 for the PMI-ACP exam, $574 in total, against $495 for a non-member. With one retake the totals are $909 for a member and $890 for a non-member. Join only if you will use the other things membership includes.
What happens if you fail the PMI-ACP exam?
You can retake the PMI-ACP. PMI allows up to three attempts within the one-year eligibility period that follows the approval of your application. A retake costs $335 for PMI members and $395 for non-members at PMI's US-dollar store prices checked on October 3, 2026. After three failed attempts, you wait one year from the last exam before you can apply again (PMI-ACP handbook, May 2022).
PMI-ACP vs SAFe: which should you take?
It depends on the employers you apply to. PMI describes the PMI-ACP as an exam that is not tied to one agile method, and it needs up to two years of agile experience, or an active PMP, first. SAFe credentials from Scaled Agile are built around the Scaled Agile Framework, so they fit organizations that run SAFe. If the ads you target name SAFe, take SAFe; if they name the PMI-ACP or PMP, take the PMI-ACP. A SAFe certification held for more than a year can also count toward the PMI-ACP experience rule. For Scrum-side credentials, see our Scrum master certification guide.
