Is SAFe POPM certification worth it in 2026?
22% of scrum master job ads in the United States name the SAFe (211 of 946, Adzuna, October 2026)
SAFe certification, the POPM (Product Owner/Product Manager) included, is worth paying for if your employer or target employer runs SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework (rules for running agile work across a large company's teams). In October 2026, the exact phrase safe scrum master appeared in 22% of the ads for US Scrum masters (Adzuna, a job-ad search site).
In our reading, only where an employer runs SAFe is SAFe POPM certification worth it, because its exam tests how product owners and product managers work inside that framework. Our count covers the SAFe Scrum Master phrase alone: ads that name the SAFe Agilist or the POPM are not counted, so this page has no ad figure for those two.
SAFe comes from Scaled Agile, Inc., which also certifies people in it. Agile means working in short cycles and adjusting the plan as feedback comes in. Scrum is one agile method: a small team works in short, fixed cycles, and a Scrum master coaches the team on the method. SAFe adds rules for running several such teams as one group. Its three entry credentials all sit at Scaled Agile's Foundational level, the lowest of its three tiers (Foundational, Advanced and Expert):
- SAFe Agilist (SA), the exam for Leading SAFe, Scaled Agile's course for leaders, listed with "No prerequisites required."
- SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), for Scrum masters on SAFe teams, listed as "New to SAFe."
- SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM), for product owners (who decide what a team builds next) and product managers, also "New to SAFe."
The current exam names of all three start with an "AI-" prefix, which fits the AI topic now in the Scrum Master and POPM exams.
Who should take which, by situation:
- You work as a product owner or product manager at a company that runs SAFe: the POPM.
- You are a Scrum master at a SAFe company, or want to be one: the SAFe Scrum Master.
- You manage teams or departments in a company that runs SAFe or is adopting it: the SAFe Agilist.
- The Scrum-master ads you read do not mention SAFe: start with our CSM page or PSM page instead.
- You have no target job yet: read our guide to Scrum master certifications first, which compares the main Scrum credentials.
Your first step costs nothing. Before you pay, search the ads for the jobs you want for the word SAFe plus your role, such as SAFe product owner, or ask your employer whether it runs the framework.

Do employers ask for SAFe? What US job ads show
Some US Scrum-master ads do, by the name SAFe Scrum Master. The exact phrase safe scrum master appeared in 22% of the 946 US Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026, from Adzuna listings with "Scrum master" in the job title.
The count is a phrase match, and it can miss in both directions. Ads that write only SSM, or ask for "SAFe certification" without the full phrase, are not counted, so the real share is probably higher. The phrase can also match ads for Advanced SAFe Scrum Master. The count also shows how often employers write the phrase, not whether they require it.
Our reading: an ad that names SAFe Scrum Master tells you the employer runs SAFe, wants someone who knows it, or accepts it. That is the situation in which the credential matches what employers write; we have no data on what it earns you.
In France, the English phrase appeared in 3% of the ads for Scrum masters in October 2026 (Adzuna); French ads may describe the credential in other words, so read it as a minimum. For the UK, India, Germany and our five other countries, the samples are small, so read their figures with care; we draw no advice from them.
Whether most companies use SAFe at all is a question on r/agile. We do not measure which companies run the framework, only what Scrum-master ads write.
Is the SAFe Scrum Master certification worth it?
In our reading, yes, for Scrum masters who work at, or apply to, employers that run SAFe. It is the one SAFe credential our ad count measures. It sits at the Foundational level for people "New to SAFe," and the course is optional if you buy the proctored exam (taken online while a live examiner watches through your webcam).
The current SSM exam page from Scaled Agile, dated August 2026, gives 45 questions in 90 minutes and an 80% passing score. An older study guide of its own still gives a 73% passing score, so plan for the 80% on the newer page. The exam covers Scrum inside SAFe: one domain (topic area), worth 14-16% of the exam, is participating in PI planning (Program Increment planning, a SAFe event where all the teams in a group plan their next block of work together). Another, worth 12-14% of the exam, is using AI in the Scrum-master role.
How the SAFe Scrum Master compares with the Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and the Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) on price, exam and renewal is set out in our guide to Scrum master certifications.
Who should take the SAFe Agilist?
It is built for managers and leaders in a company that runs SAFe, or one that is adopting it. Its issuer calls the SAFe Agilist the exam for its Leading SAFe course, lists "No prerequisites required," and lets you buy the proctored exam without the course.
The exam looks at the whole framework from a leader's seat. Its largest domains include product development flow (how work moves from idea to release), worth 25-28% of the exam, and Lean Portfolio Management (how a company chooses and funds its work). Another domain, leading the change, is 7-9% of the exam.
For someone who works inside a team rather than leading one, our reading is that the role credential, the SAFe Scrum Master or the POPM, matches the job titles in the ads more closely.
SAFe Agilist vs SAFe Scrum Master vs POPM: which fits your role?
Pick by role: the Agilist for leaders, the SAFe Scrum Master for Scrum masters and the POPM for product owners and product managers. The exams share a format and a fee; the POPM asks for a slightly higher score.

SAFe Agilist vs SAFe POPM: leader or product role?
Take the POPM if you own a team's backlog (its ordered list of work) or a product's direction. According to Scaled Agile's POPM page, the exam puts its largest weight, 28-30%, on iteration execution (running the short work cycles that plain Scrum calls sprints) and 17-19% on preparing for PI planning (the planning event for a group of teams). The Agilist exam covers portfolio funding and leading change instead.
Holding both costs no extra renewal fee. The $195-a-year Foundational tier is "for those who currently hold one or more Foundational certifications."
How much does the SAFe Agilist cost?
The proctored exam alone costs $495 plus tax, with two attempts within 60 days. The same fee applies to the SAFe Scrum Master and POPM exams. The other route is a Leading SAFe course from one of Scaled Agile's training partners, with the exam included in the course price.
With a course, you must use your exam access within 60 days after it ends. For courses taken after April 14, 2026, the first two attempts are included, and the retake page puts each later attempt on the course route at $50 for most exams, the SAFe Scrum Master and POPM among them. Each training partner sets its own course price, and we did not verify any; compare prices on Scaled Agile's training calendar before booking.
Without a course, two failed attempts mean paying again. The support pages disagree on what that next attempt costs, so we give no figure; ask Scaled Agile before you buy.
| Exam-only route, one Foundational certification | Total before tax | How it adds up |
|---|---|---|
| First year | $495 | Exam, two attempts included |
| Three years certified | $885 | $495 + 2 yearly renewals × $195 |
| Five years certified | $1,275 | $495 + 4 yearly renewals × $195 |
Source: Scaled Agile proctored-exam FAQ and certification tiers article, read October 2026. Totals assume a pass within the two included attempts and a first renewal one year after you pass. For the course route, replace the $495 with the partner's course price. Totals leave out any cost of earning 12 CEUs a year. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
Where to take the current, AI-prefixed Leading SAFe course is a question two posts on r/agile asked (r/agile, r/agile). The issuer lists its partners' classes on its training calendar. If you want only the certificate, the proctored exam needs no course.

SAFe Agilist renewal: how much does it cost each year?
$195 a year plus tax, and 12 continuing education units (CEUs, credits you earn through learning such as courses and events) each year. That Foundational tier also renews the SAFe Scrum Master and the POPM. The Advanced and Expert tiers cost $295 and $995 a year and cover its higher-level certifications.
You can renew up to 270 days before your certification expires. Renewal needs no new exam.

Does the SAFe Agilist expire?
Yes, every year unless you renew. There is no late fee and no exam retake if you renew after the date. While it is expired, Scaled Agile does not give you a copy of the certificate, so renew before an employer asks to see it.
How hard is the SAFe Agilist exam?
It is a timed, multiple-choice exam: 45 questions in 90 minutes, with an 80% passing score. If every question counts the same, that is 36 correct answers, and two minutes per question (our arithmetic). On all three exams you get a coaching report, Scaled Agile's feedback on your result.
The POPM exam has the same length but asks for 82%, which comes to 37 correct answers. All three certification pages list an unlimited practice test, and Scaled Agile offers an optional three-hour, on-demand exam prep course for the SAFe Scrum Master.
We found no official pass rate, and we do not repeat unofficial ones.

How long does it take to get the SAFe Agilist?
The exam takes 90 minutes. With a course, you must take it within 60 days after the course ends. The certification pages do not state how long the courses run, because training partners schedule them, so we give no course length. We also give no study-time figure: the Reddit posts we collected hold too few first-hand reports for one.
Is SAFe agile certification worth it if you hold the CSM or PSM?
Only if the jobs you want run SAFe. A Certified Scrum Master (CSM, from Scrum Alliance) or a Professional Scrum Master (PSM, from Scrum.org) already shows that you know Scrum; a SAFe credential adds how Scrum works inside SAFe. In the same October 2026 Adzuna count of 946 US Scrum-master ads, the phrase certified scrum master appeared in 22% and the phrase professional scrum master in 12%. One ad can name several credentials.
One poster who held the CSM and SAFe asked whether the PSM would add anything (r/scrum); another, with the CSM, asked whether the SAFe Scrum Master was worth getting on top of it (r/scrum). In our reading, one Scrum credential that matches the ads is enough to start; our PSM page and CSM page cover cost and renewal for those two.
A poster asked whether a project-management degree, with the PSM I and SAFe picked up on the side, would serve better (r/PMCareers). We have not measured what a degree adds. For project-manager jobs, the credentials we count are the Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and PMI's agile certification, the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP). The Agilist and POPM certification pages list credit toward PMI PDUs (Professional Development Units, the learning credits PMI counts for renewal).

What is the SAFe Agilist salary?
We cannot give one. We found no source that measures pay for holders of the SAFe Agilist or any other SAFe certification, so we have no SAFe certification salary figure. Scaled Agile's POPM page speaks of "higher earning potential" without a number.
The nearest official figure covers a broad US wage group that includes Scrum masters, certified or not. It is in the salary section of our Scrum master certification guide, with what it can and cannot tell you.

Is SAFe certification worth it? What Reddit posters ask
The Reddit posts we collected ask where to train, whether SAFe adds anything to the CSM or PSM, and whether a degree would serve better; the sections above answer each one.
One post asked SAFe leaders whether their role was really changing in 2026 (r/agile). We have one month of ad data, so we cannot measure a change in demand. What the issuer's pages now show is the "AI-" prefix on the exam names, and an AI domain worth 12-14% of the exam for the SAFe Scrum Master and the POPM.
For the credentials and skills that Scrum-master ads name, country by country, see our Scrum-master job page.
What we did not check
- Course prices and course lengths, which Scaled Agile's training partners set.
- The fee for a third attempt on the exam-only route, where Scaled Agile's pages disagree.
- Pay for SAFe holders and pass rates.
- How long people study.
- Whether earning the 12 yearly CEUs costs anything.

Questions people ask
Is SAFe POPM certification worth it?
The SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) certification pays off, in our reading, if your current or target employer runs SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework (a set of rules for running agile work across a large company's teams). We have no job-ad count for the POPM itself: our count covers only the exact phrase safe scrum master, which appeared in 22% of the 946 US Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna). The proctored POPM exam (taken online under a live remote examiner) costs $495 plus tax with two attempts, and renewal costs $195 a year (Scaled Agile, read October 2026).
Is SAFe Agilist certification worth it for managers?
The SAFe Agilist (SA), the exam for Leading SAFe (Scaled Agile's course for leaders), fits managers and leaders in a company that runs SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework for coordinating agile teams. It sits at Scaled Agile's entry-level Foundational tier, with no prerequisites. We have no job-ad figure for it. The exam has 45 questions in 90 minutes with an 80% passing score, and the proctored exam (taken online under a live remote examiner) costs $495 plus tax without a course (Scaled Agile, read October 2026).
Is SAFe Agilist worth it, according to Reddit?
In the Reddit posts we collected about SAFe, questions about the SAFe Agilist were practical: where to take the current Leading SAFe course, and whether SAFe adds anything to a Certified Scrum Master (CSM, from Scrum Alliance) or a Professional Scrum Master (PSM, from Scrum.org).
How much does SAFe certification cost?
A SAFe Agilist, SAFe Scrum Master or SAFe POPM proctored exam (taken online under a live remote examiner) bought without a course costs $495 plus tax, with two attempts within 60 days. Renewal costs $195 a year plus tax for Scaled Agile's entry-level Foundational tier. Three years of holding one certification on the exam-only route comes to $885 before tax: $495 for the exam plus two yearly renewals of $195, if the first renewal falls due a year after you pass. Courses that include the exam are priced by Scaled Agile's training partners; we did not verify those prices (Scaled Agile, read October 2026).
How does SAFe Agilist renewal work?
The SAFe Agilist renews every year. The entry-level Foundational tier at Scaled Agile costs $195 a year plus tax and asks for 12 continuing education units (CEUs, credits earned through learning) each year; the same tier renews the SAFe Scrum Master and SAFe POPM. You can renew up to 270 days before the expiration date. A lapsed certification can be renewed later with no late fee and no new exam, but Scaled Agile gives no copy of an expired certificate (Scaled Agile, read October 2026).
What is the SAFe certification salary?
We found no source that measures pay for holders of SAFe certifications such as the SAFe Agilist, SAFe Scrum Master or SAFe POPM. Scaled Agile's POPM page speaks of higher earning potential but gives no figure, and we do not repeat salary figures without a sample or method. The nearest official pay figure covers a broad US wage group that includes Scrum masters, certified or not, so it cannot show what a SAFe certification adds.
