How to become a Scrum master with no experience: what 946 US job ads ask for

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

Yes, you can start with no Scrum experience; the first job is the hard part. How to become a Scrum master with no experience: start by learning Scrum, a way of running team work in short cycles. Then learn Jira, a task-tracking tool that appeared in 65% of the ads for US Scrum masters on Adzuna (a job-ad site) in October 2026.

A certificate is optional. Scrum Alliance says certification is not required to get a job as a Scrum master, though certain employers ask for its Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), a course followed by a test. Scrum.org sells the Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) exam with no course required.

Can I be a Scrum master without experience?

Yes, you can apply without having held the title; landing the first job is the harder part. Scrum Alliance writes: "You can pursue scrum master openings even if you've never worked as one before." That is the certificate body's own marketing, and it sells the course.

A Scrum master is the person on a team who makes Scrum work. The Scrum Guide is the free document that defines Scrum. It says: "The Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum as defined in the Scrum Guide." The Scrum Guide's list of duties includes the removal of impediments to the Scrum Team's progress (impediments are anything that blocks the work).

The skeptical view comes from people already in the job. One commenter on r/scrum (a Reddit forum about Scrum) called the switch possible, but added that "getting the first job without relevant experience may still be difficult" (r/scrum, September 2026). O*NET, an official US database of job profiles, lists Scrum Master as a reported title of IT project managers. For that band, where Scrum Master is one reported title, it says the jobs need "a considerable amount of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience."

How to become a Scrum master without a degree

The rules of Scrum, Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org (the two certificate bodies whose pages we read) list no degree; employers set their own education rules. The Scrum Guide describes the Scrum Master role without any education requirement. The pages we read for the CSM (Scrum Alliance) and the PSM I (Scrum.org) name other prerequisites only: a course for the CSM and nothing for the PSM I.

Official US data points the other way for the wider job family. O*NET puts IT project managers in Job Zone Four, its band for jobs that need considerable preparation. Its description of that band says a four-year bachelor's degree is required for the majority of those occupations, but not all. That is a description of the occupation, not a count of Scrum-master ads.

We do not count degree wording in job ads, so we cannot say how often US Scrum-master ads ask for one. The rule that applies to you is the education line in each ad you want, which is why the first step in the plan below is to read 20 of them. If an ad asks for a degree, apply where it says or equivalent experience, and build that experience through the internal route and the business analyst or coordinator roles in steps 4 and 6.

What should you learn first?

Learn Scrum itself, then the two tools that come up in Scrum-master ads. Start with the Scrum Guide: it is free, and it sets out the team roles, the events (the recurring meetings) and the backlog (the ordered list of work the team plans to do).

Skill What it is Share of US Scrum-master ads, October 2026
Jira A tool teams use to plan sprints (the short work cycles) and track tasks 65%
Kanban A method for managing work as cards that move across a board 32%

Source: Adzuna API, 946 US job ads with the search title scrum master, collected in October 2026, counted when the ad text contains jira or kanban. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

Jira and Kanban are the only two skills we count for this role, so other tools have no share here. Your own tally of local ads, the first of the steps below, fills that gap.

Do you need a certificate for a Scrum master job?

A certificate is optional, and job ads show which ones employers name. In October 2026, of the 946 US Scrum-master ads on Adzuna, the phrase certified scrum master appeared in 210, the phrase professional scrum master in 112 and the phrase safe scrum master (SAFe is the Scaled Agile Framework, explained below the table) in 211.

Credential Issuer US Scrum-master ads naming it, October 2026 How you earn it
Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) Scrum Alliance 210 A 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer, then a one-hour online multiple-choice test
Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) Scrum.org 112 An exam; Scrum.org strongly recommends a course but does not require one
SAFe Scrum Master Scaled Agile 211 See our SAFe Scrum Master page

Source: Adzuna API, 946 US Scrum-master ads collected in October 2026, matched by full phrase; one ad can name more than one credential. Course and exam rules: Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org, read October 12, 2026.

SAFe stands for the Scaled Agile Framework, a framework for scaling agile work across teams in a large company, and the phrase we count names one SAFe course only. A fourth, general phrase, scrum master certification, names no issuer; it appeared in 150 of the 946 US Scrum-master ads in the same month.

The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), from the Project Management Institute, is an agile credential. We count it in project-manager ads, not Scrum-master ads, so it has no row here.

What does each credential cost?

The PSM I costs $200 per attempt, Scrum.org says, with a passing score of 85% and no renewal fee. Scrum.org strongly recommends a course, and each retake costs another $200, so $200 is the whole cost only if you pass on the first try.

The CSM costs whatever your trainer charges: Scrum Alliance says trainers set the course price, which varies by region and format, and its page gave a range of $250 to $2,495, based on course prices as of October 2023. The real total stays unknown until you check live trainer prices in the Scrum Alliance course search. After the course you have 90 days and two attempts to pass the test; the page we read does not say whether the test fee is separate. The CSM renews every two years for $100 plus 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs, credits for time spent learning), so keeping it for four years adds one renewal at $100, and six years adds two, or $200.

Scrum Alliance says there is no way to skip the course, and that "prior experience or other agile/scrum certifications" cannot replace it. Our CSM vs PSM comparison and the page on Scrum master certifications compared go further into both.

How to get a Scrum master job with no experience

Read the ads first, learn Scrum second and find a way to practice it on a real team third. The plan below assumes you have no Scrum role yet.

  1. Today, your own sample: save 20 Scrum-master ads for your area from any job site. In a spreadsheet, note for each ad the credentials it names, the tools, the education line and the experience line, word for word. This is your exercise, not our data; it tells you what local employers ask for, including the degree and experience wording we do not count.
  2. This week: read the Scrum Guide twice. Write down, in your own words, what the Scrum Master, the product owner (the person who decides what the team builds) and the developers each do.
  3. Next two weeks: set up a board, on paper or in any task tool, and plan one 1-week sprint for a real personal or volunteer goal, with a backlog, a daily check-in and a short written review at the end. Or join a volunteer or community team that already uses Scrum.
  4. At your current job: offer to run a team's board, its stand-up (a short daily check-in) or its retrospective (a meeting where the team reviews how it worked). That gives you Scrum work you can describe in an interview.
  5. Only if your 20 ads name one: pick the credential they name. If they accept the PSM I, it costs $200 per attempt, and Scrum.org strongly recommends a course; if they ask for the CSM, budget for a course.
  6. Apply wider: add business analyst, junior project manager and project coordinator ads to your search, and look for teams that use Scrum.

Scrum master career change: which job to come from

Come from a job that already sits on or next to a software team, if you can. A developer, tester, business analyst or project coordinator already attends the team's meetings and sees how work moves through the backlog.

On r/scrum, one commenter told a career changer: "Look for jobs alongside Agile. Business analyst, junior/entry level project management, etc." (r/scrum, July 2025). Agile here means the wider family of methods that work in small steps with frequent feedback, of which Scrum is one. Another commenter described a consulting trainee program as a way into tech, where "you may get an opportunity to fill in as a scrum master in one of your assignments" (r/scrum, September 2026).

People from outside tech post about the move too. One r/scrum poster, a middle school teacher, described a career change from education to Scrum (r/scrum). From teaching, admin, retail or customer support, the parts that may carry over are running meetings, keeping a plan on track and handling people who disagree, which echo the Scrum Master's facilitation and impediment-removing duties. Name those in your resume in Scrum terms. Our guide to online courses for a career change covers courses for people switching fields.

If you prefer planning a whole project, read our project-manager role page as well: a project manager plans and delivers the project, while a Scrum master runs the team's process.

What do Reddit posters say about a first Scrum master job?

The first two r/scrum posts below warn that the first job is the hardest step. They are single comments, not a survey.

  • One commenter wrote: "Bear in mind that the Scrum Master is a leader, and leadership positions are not entry jobs" (r/scrum, July 2025). The pivot: search for business analyst, junior project manager and project coordinator titles, as in step 6.
  • Asked about entry-level Scrum-master jobs, another wrote: "They do exist, but rarely these days and often called something else like delivery manager" (r/scrum, September 2026).
  • A third pointed out that the Scrum Guide does not require a technical or scientific background for the role, which is not a warning.

Your next step is the first one in the plan: save 20 Scrum-master ads for your area today.

What we did not check

  • Degree requirements, "no degree required" wording, years of experience, salary and "no experience" ads. We count only the skills Jira and Kanban and four certificate phrases.
  • Ads that write a credential only as CSM or PSM, or use Scrum Alliance's one-word spelling ScrumMaster. We match full phrases, so those ads are not in the counts.
  • SAFe Scrum Master fees and exam rules, which our SAFe Scrum Master page covers.
  • Hiring outcomes. Nothing here measures whether a course or credential leads to a job; the views quoted come from single Reddit comments.

For the full certificate counts in other countries, see our page on Scrum master certifications by country.

Questions people ask

Can I be a Scrum master without experience?

Yes, you can apply, but the first job is the hard part. Scrum Alliance, which issues the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) credential, says you can pursue Scrum-master openings even if you have not worked as one before. Posters on the Reddit forum r/scrum said the first job without relevant experience may still be difficult, and one suggested starting in a nearby role such as business analyst or junior project manager.

How do I become a Scrum master without a degree?

Learn Scrum (a way of running team work in short cycles called sprints), then check the education line in each ad you want. The Scrum Guide, the free document that defines Scrum, lists no degree for the role, and the Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org pages for their entry credentials list no degree requirement. O*NET, an official US database of job profiles, lists Scrum Master as a reported title of IT project managers and says most jobs in that band require a four-year bachelor's degree, though some do not. If an ad asks for a degree, look for ads that accept equivalent experience.

Do I need a certification to be a Scrum master?

No. Scrum Alliance says certification is not required to get a job as a Scrum master, though certain employers ask for its Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). On Adzuna, a job-ad search site, the phrase certified scrum master appeared in 210 of 946 US Scrum-master ads in October 2026. Check the ads for the jobs you want before you pay for a course.

Should a beginner take the CSM or the PSM?

Take the one the ads for the jobs you want name. We counted 946 US Scrum-master ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in October 2026. The phrase certified scrum master (the CSM from Scrum Alliance) appeared in 210 of them and the phrase professional scrum master (the PSM from Scrum.org) in 112. The CSM requires a 16-hour course whose price the trainer sets; the PSM I is a $200 exam per attempt with no course required, though Scrum.org strongly recommends one (both vendors, read October 12, 2026).

How much does it cost to become a Scrum master?

Learning Scrum can cost nothing: the Scrum Guide, the document that defines Scrum, is free to read. A credential costs more. Scrum.org charges $200 per attempt for the Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) exam, with no course required and no renewal fee. Scrum Alliance's Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) requires a course that trainers price themselves; Scrum Alliance gave a range of $250 to $2,495 based on course prices as of October 2023, so check live trainer prices. Renewal costs $100 every two years plus 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs, credits for time spent learning). Both vendor pages were read October 12, 2026.

What should I learn first to become a Scrum master?

Read the Scrum Guide, the free document that defines Scrum, then learn Jira and Kanban. Jira (a tool teams use to track tasks) appeared in 65% of the ads for US Scrum masters on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in October 2026. Kanban (a method for managing work as cards on a board) appeared in 32% of the ads for US Scrum masters in the same month.

How do I make a Scrum master career change?

A Scrum master career change works best from a job that already sits on or near a software team: developer, tester, business analyst or project coordinator. On the Reddit forum r/scrum, one commenter advised looking first for jobs alongside agile teams (agile means working in small steps with frequent feedback). A middle school teacher there described moving from education into Scrum. Volunteer to run your current team's board or meetings, so you can describe real Scrum work in an interview.
