SAFe Scrum Master certification vs CSM: which should you take?

The SAFe Scrum Master certification vs CSM choice depends on your employer: take the SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) if it runs SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), and the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) if not. In October 2026, certified scrum master appeared in 210 of 946 US Scrum-master ads on Adzuna (a job-ad site), and safe scrum master in 211.

Agile means working in short cycles and changing the plan as feedback comes in. Scrum is one agile method: a small team works in fixed cycles, and a Scrum master coaches the team on the method. SAFe adds rules for running several such teams as one group across a large company. Prices on this page are in US dollars, from Scrum Alliance and Scaled Agile pages (dates under Sources).

CSM or SAFe Scrum Master: which should you take?

Pick by the framework your employer uses. The SSM fits Scrum masters at companies that run SAFe; the CSM fits Scrum teams that are not tied to SAFe.

  • Your employer, or the employers you apply to, run SAFe: the SSM. Scaled Agile says it is for "facilitators and problem-solvers who want to guide Agile teams in an enterprise environment."
  • You work, or want to work, with Scrum teams that do not run SAFe: the CSM. Scrum Alliance says certification is not required for a Scrum-master job, but some employers ask for the CSM.
  • You pay for it yourself and want to skip a course: only the SSM allows that ($495 plus tax, two attempts), and it fits you only if SAFe employers are your target. The CSM always comes with a course, and Scrum Alliance's listed CSM course prices start at $250.
  • Renewal cost matters to you: the CSM renews for $100 every two years; the SSM renews for $195 every year plus tax.
  • You lead teams or a department through a SAFe rollout: neither. The SAFe Agilist is the leader credential, covered in the section on SAFe Agilist vs CSM.

Your first step costs nothing, even with no target job yet. Open five Scrum-master ads for the country you plan to work in and search each one for SAFe, CSM and ScrumMaster. If three or more name SAFe, aim for the SSM; if three or more name the CSM or no framework and not SAFe, aim for the CSM. Otherwise, start with the one named by the employer you most want to work for, and read the section on getting both.

What is the difference between the CSM and the SAFe Scrum Master?

The CSM teaches Scrum on one team; the SSM teaches the Scrum master's job inside SAFe, where several teams work as one group.

The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) is Scrum Alliance's foundational Scrum-master credential: a required 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer (a trainer Scrum Alliance has approved to teach it), then an online test. The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) is a Foundational-level certification from Scaled Agile, Inc., labeled "New to SAFe," with an exam you can take with or without a course.

SAFe has a whole family of certifications. Next to the SSM, the Foundational tier includes the SAFe Agilist (SA) for leaders, the SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) and the SAFe Practitioner (SP). Higher tiers add the Advanced SAFe Scrum Master (SASM) and more. Our SAFe certification page covers the family, and our PSPO vs SAFe POPM comparison covers the product-owner credential.

What do US Scrum-master job ads name?

Both phrases appear in US Scrum-master ads. The table gives each count against the same base, the 946 US Scrum-master ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna).

Phrase counted What it counts What it misses Ads checked Ads with the phrase
certified scrum master The full CSM name written as three words; can also match generic wording such as "a certified Scrum master" Ads that write only "CSM" or Scrum Alliance's one-word spelling "Certified ScrumMaster" 946 210
safe scrum master SAFe Scrum Master, including "Advanced SAFe Scrum Master" Ads that write only "SSM" or "SAFe certification" without the full phrase; the SAFe Agilist and POPM 946 211

Source: Adzuna API, US job ads with "Scrum master" in the title collected in October 2026, matched by the exact phrases certified scrum master and safe scrum master. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.

Both counts are minimums for the phrase, and both are phrase counts, not credential counts. The phrase certified scrum master can also appear as plain description rather than as the Scrum Alliance credential. One ad can contain both phrases and then counts in both rows, so the two counts do not add up to a total. Naming a phrase is not the same as requiring the certification.

Outside the US, our samples for these phrases are too small to report here, so read any figure for them with care; our Scrum-master job page lists every country we count.

How do the exam, cost and renewal compare?

The CSM is a course with a test at the end; the SSM is an exam you can buy alone or get inside a course from a training partner (a company that teaches Scaled Agile's courses). That changes what each price buys.

A proctored exam is one a live supervisor watches while you take it, at a time you book in advance. An SEU is Scrum Alliance's unit of continuing education, and one hour of learning equals one SEU. A CEU is Scaled Agile's version: credits earned through learning such as courses and events. The SSM page puts the requirement at 24 CEUs over a two-year cycle, which is 12 a year.

CSM (Scrum Alliance) SSM (Scaled Agile)
Course Required: 16 hours with a Certified Scrum Trainer, most classes over 2 to 3 days Not required; training partners run courses that include the exam
Price $250 to $2,495 for the course, test included; trainers set the price $495 plus tax for the exam alone; or a partner's course price, which Scaled Agile does not publish
Attempts Two within 90 days after the course, included Two with the $495 exam; with a course, two if taken within 60 days after it ends
Exam 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes; online, not proctored, open book 45 questions in 90 minutes; the exam bought alone is proctored
Passing score 37 of 50 (74%) 80%
Renewal Every two years: $100 and 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) Every year: $195 plus tax and 12 continuing education units (CEUs)

What do the CSM and SSM cost over four years?

If you pass on the included attempts, the CSM costs $350 to $2,595 over four years and the SSM exam-only route costs $1,080 before tax.

Four years certified, before tax CSM SSM, exam only SSM, course route
First purchase $250 to $2,495 (course, test included) $495 (exam, two attempts) Partner's course price
Renewals due in the four years 1 × $100 (month 24) 3 × $195 (months 12, 24 and 36, assumed) 3 × $195 (months 12, 24 and 36, assumed)
Four-year total $350 to $2,595 $1,080 Course price plus $585

Source: Scrum Alliance and Scaled Agile fees above. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

For the CSM, the course plus one $100 renewal at month 24 comes to $350 to $2,595. The CSM's second renewal, at month 48, pays for years five and six, so it is left out.

For the SSM, $495 for the exam plus three yearly renewals of $195 ($585 in all) comes to $1,080 before tax. This assumes the first renewal falls due one year after you pass, following the annual cycle; the Scaled Agile pages we read do not state the date. The renewal at month 48 pays for year five, so it is left out too.

The CSM total includes 16 hours of class with a trainer; the SSM exam-only total buys the exam alone, with no instruction.

What the SAFe certification costs: required and optional fees (USD)
The required SAFe fees add up to $495; with the optional items shown it is $740. Keeping SAFe costs $195 a year.

SAFe Agilist vs CSM: which is for whom?

The SAFe Agilist is for leaders who run a SAFe rollout; the CSM is for people who coach a Scrum team. If you work as a Scrum master, the SAFe credential to compare with the CSM is the SSM.

Scaled Agile says the SAFe Agilist (SA) "is for current or aspiring leaders who need to drive transformation in increasingly complex environments." It is the credential for Leading SAFe, Scaled Agile's course for leaders. It sits at the same Foundational level as the SSM, with no prerequisites, and uses the same exam format: 45 questions in 90 minutes, 80% to pass. Its exam fee and renewal match the SSM's: $495 plus tax for the exam alone, then $195 plus tax and 12 CEUs a year.

We have no job-ad count for the SAFe Agilist; our SAFe count covers the phrase safe scrum master only.

Should you get both?

Only if the ads for the jobs you want name both, or an employer pays for one of them. Both cover Scrum; the SSM adds how a Scrum master works inside SAFe.

If you hold the CSM and join a company that runs SAFe, you can add the SSM without a course by buying the $495 exam. Holding both for four years costs $1,430 to $3,675 before tax at the fees above: the CSM's $350 to $2,595 plus the SSM's $1,080.

Each issuer has a next level. Scrum Alliance's Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) asks for 12 months of Scrum-master work in the past five years, as our CSM page explains. Scaled Agile recommends its Advanced SAFe Scrum Master for experienced Scrum masters and certified SSMs. For the Professional Scrum Master (PSM) from Scrum.org, see our CSM vs PSM comparison, and for every Scrum-master credential side by side, our page on Scrum master certifications compared.

What we did not check

  • SSM course lengths, which training partners set.
  • Whether earning SEUs or CEUs costs anything.
  • Pass rates for either exam.
  • Ad counts for the SAFe Agilist, the POPM, or the bare strings CSM and SSM.

Every agile and Scrum credential we track is on our agile and Scrum field page.

Questions people ask

SAFe Scrum Master certification vs CSM: which should you take?

Take the SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) from Scaled Agile if your employer or target employers run SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework (rules for running many agile teams as one group). Take the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance for Scrum teams that are not tied to SAFe. In October 2026, the phrase certified scrum master appeared in 210 of 946 US Scrum-master ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, and the phrase safe scrum master appeared in 211 of the same ads. Both are counts of the exact phrase only, so they miss other spellings, and one ad can contain both phrases.

How much do the CSM and the SAFe Scrum Master cost?

The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) requires a course that Scrum Alliance lists at $250 to $2,495, a range set by trainers and based on public course prices as of October 2023; the course includes two test attempts. Renewal costs $100 every two years. The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) exam bought without a course costs $495 plus tax with two attempts, and renewal costs $195 a year plus tax. Over four years, the CSM comes to $350 to $2,595 and the SSM exam-only route to $1,080 before tax (Scrum Alliance and Scaled Agile pages, checked October 12, 2026).

Can you take the SAFe Scrum Master exam without a course?

Yes. Scaled Agile sells the SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) exam on its own as a proctored exam (one a live supervisor watches while you take it) for $495 plus tax, with two attempts included. Scrum Alliance's page for the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) offers no such route: it gives access to the test after a 16-hour course with a Certified Scrum Trainer, a trainer Scrum Alliance has approved to teach it (both checked October 12, 2026).

Is the SAFe Agilist the same as a Scrum master certification?

No. Scaled Agile says the SAFe Agilist (SA) is for current or aspiring leaders who need to drive transformation (changing how a whole company works) in complex environments. The Scrum-master credential in SAFe, the one to compare with the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), is the SAFe Scrum Master (SSM). The Agilist exam has 45 questions in 90 minutes with an 80% passing score and costs $495 plus tax without a course (Scaled Agile, checked October 12, 2026). We have no job-ad count for the SAFe Agilist.

Do the CSM and the SAFe Scrum Master expire?

Both must be renewed. The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) renews every two years for $100 and 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs, one hour of learning equals one SEU). The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) renews every year for $195 plus tax and 12 continuing education units (CEUs, credits earned through learning such as courses and events) a year (Scrum Alliance and Scaled Agile, checked October 12, 2026).
