Is the APM PMQ worth it for UK project jobs?

Yes, for people with a few years of project work behind them who want what APM attaches to it: Full membership, the pathway toward ChPP and direct entry to PRINCE2 Practitioner. In October 2026, the word PMQ appeared in 268 of the 6,205 UK ads for "project manager" we counted on Adzuna.

Read the PMQ figure as a lower bound. We count the word PMQ, so an ad that writes only "Project Management Qualification" is not in it. An ad that mentions the PMQ may list it as desirable rather than required. In UK ads for "program manager" in October 2026, the word PMQ appeared in 18 of the 1,061 ads.

UK project-manager ads on Adzuna in October 2026 named PRINCE2 in 14% of the ads and the PMP (Project Management Professional, from the US-based PMI) in 6.9%. If you want to match the credentials those ads name, start with PRINCE2.

APM membership is worth weighing if your employer or the employers you target name APM, or if you want to apply for ChPP later. We have no data on what membership adds to hiring or pay. Our project manager role page shows which other credentials and skills UK employers name.

Who is the APM PMQ for?

APM names no formal entry requirement. Its handbook describes the typical candidate as someone with two to three years of experience as a project professional, or someone on a project management apprenticeship or degree. Long written answers carry 50 of the exam's 90 marks, so it suits people who have already worked on projects.

Scotland and the rest of the UK number qualification levels differently. APM places the PMQ at Level 7 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Its handbook says SCQF Level 7 is equivalent in difficulty to Level 4 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) used in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The syllabus has 24 learning objectives. It is aligned with the APM Body of Knowledge (8th edition), APM's reference book of project practice, and with the APM Competence Framework. APM warns that the Body of Knowledge is not a study guide for the exam, because not everything in it is tested.

How much does the APM Project Management Qualification cost?

The open online exam costs £528 for APM members and £648 for non-members, value added tax (VAT, the UK sales tax) included. A resit (APM's word for a retake after a fail) costs £471.60. The other route is a course from an accredited training provider, a company APM has approved to teach the qualification and run its exam; each provider sets its own price.

Route Price What it includes
Open online exam, APM member £528, VAT included Exam only; you study on your own; bookable all year, card payment only
Open online exam, non-member £648, VAT included Same exam
Resit (retake after a fail) £471.60, VAT included A different exam paper; possible through a training provider too
Associate membership (APM's lowest-priced paid grade) plus member exam £698 £170 a year for Associate membership + £528
Course through an accredited training provider Set by the provider Classroom, blended or e-learning; APM publishes no price for this route
For comparison: PFQ open exam £260.40 member, £278.40 non-member, VAT included APM's entry-level exam, 60 minutes

Source: APM open exam and membership pages, checked October 12, 2026. The £698 total is our arithmetic.

Joining APM only for the member price does not pay off on its own. Assuming no joining fee (APM's membership page names none), Associate membership at £170 plus the £528 member exam comes to £698, which is £50 more than the £648 non-member price. Join if you want membership for other reasons, such as working toward Full membership.

APM's handbook puts tutor time on a taught course at about 32 hours, which APM says is in general delivered as a five-day workshop. Ask your employer whether it will pay before you book either route.

How hard is the PMQ exam?

It is harder than a multiple-choice test: 60 of the 90 marks come from short and long written answers. The exam lasts 2.5 hours, has 40 questions worth 90 marks and is split into two parts, with an optional break of up to 30 minutes that does not count toward the time.

Question type Questions Marks each Marks in total
Multiple response 20 1 20
Select from list 5 2 10
Short response 5 2 10
Long response 10 5 50
Total 40 90

Source: APM PMQ page, checked October 12, 2026.

APM publishes no fixed passing score. Its handbook says the passing score varies between exam versions to allow for small differences in difficulty, and a panel of examiners and markers sets it for each paper. A fail within one mark of the passing score is re-marked automatically. Results come within eight weeks. If you pass, you also get a PDF certificate and an email to claim a Credly badge (a digital badge you can share online).

The open exam runs on APM's online exam platform with remote invigilation (supervision by webcam) by ProctorExam: the session is recorded, and an invigilator reviews it later. You need a computer with a webcam and microphone, a smartphone or tablet with a camera as a second camera, a passport or driving license and a strong internet connection. The exam is in English, and APM recommends a level equal to an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 or higher.

APM does not publish a pass rate. One poster on r/SixSigma who had taken the PMQ wrote that it was not too hard for them (r/SixSigma, August 2026). That is one person, not a measure.

How long to study, and with what?

APM's handbook puts the average total study time at 75 hours, including revision and the exam itself. APM's PMQ page lists a Learner Study Pack with 24 study areas mapped to the syllabus's learning outcomes. Use the syllabus in the handbook as your checklist. Long answers carry 50 of the 90 marks, so practice writing five-mark answers on its learning objectives against the clock.

Should you take the PFQ before the PMQ?

Only if you have little project experience. The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is APM's entry-level exam, at SCQF Level 6: a 60-minute multiple-choice test that needs no prior knowledge or experience. APM does not require it before the PMQ, but suggests it for people without two to three years of project work or a project management apprenticeship or degree.

A poster on r/PMCareers asked whether to skip the PFQ course fees and go straight to the PMQ (r/PMCareers, June 2026). With some project work behind you, going straight to the PMQ saves the PFQ fee of £278.40 (non-member, open exam). Without it, the PFQ is the lower-risk start: it costs less than half the PMQ open exam, and a failed PMQ means a £471.60 resit.

Can the PMQ get you into project management without experience?

It can show commitment, but it cannot replace project experience. The same r/PMCareers poster was considering a career change. APM sets no degree requirement for the PMQ. The UK ads we count are for project managers, people who already run projects, so plan on a coordinator, project-support or apprenticeship role first. Before that, the PFQ or PRINCE2 Foundation is a smaller first step.

Does the APM PMQ expire?

APM's PMQ page, open exam page and handbook state no expiration date or renewal requirement for the PMQ. If you use the PMQ for an APM membership application, APM's membership pages say accepted qualifications must be current and valid during the assessment.

What does the PMQ lead to?

Three next steps, each on its own body's terms.

Full membership of APM (MAPM)

The PMQ is an accepted qualification for Full membership of APM (MAPM). Under APM's Route One (its membership route for people with an accepted qualification), you also need to evidence three years of project management experience. Without an accepted qualification, Route Three asks for five years. Full membership costs £215 a year.

Chartered Project Professional (ChPP)

APM describes the PMQ as a pathway toward ChPP, its chartered standard for experienced project professionals. The conditions: you must meet APM's experience requirements and go through its validation process. APM says the chartered standard is open to people without project management qualifications too.

PRINCE2 7 Practitioner

PeopleCert, which runs the PRINCE2 exams, accepts the PMQ as an entry route to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner, so you can skip PRINCE2 7 Foundation. PeopleCert's UK store sells each level as a bundle: an exam voucher (the prepaid right to take the exam) plus a learning resource kit, at £543 for Foundation and £604 for Practitioner (VAT included, checked October 3, 2026).

Route to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner Exams Total, our arithmetic
PMQ first, non-member £648 PMQ + £604 Practitioner £1,252
PMQ first, APM member £528 PMQ + £604 Practitioner £1,132, plus £170 a year for Associate membership
PRINCE2 only £543 Foundation + £604 Practitioner £1,147

Source: APM open exam and membership pages (October 12, 2026) and PeopleCert UK store (October 3, 2026).

Skipping Foundation saves money only if you already hold the PMQ. Take the PMQ first for what APM attaches to it, not to cut the cost of PRINCE2.

APM PMQ vs PRINCE2 and PMP: which should you take?

Take PRINCE2 to match the credentials that UK project-manager ads name, the PMQ for an APM career path and the PMP once you meet PMI's experience rule. PRINCE2 and PMP facts below were checked on October 3, 2026.

APM PMQ PRINCE2 7 Practitioner PMP

Renewal None stated by APM Every three years, 60 CPD points Every three years, 60 PDUs
UK project-manager ads naming it, October 2026 4.3% (word PMQ) 14% (any PRINCE2 level) 6.9%

Source: APM (October 12, 2026), PeopleCert and PMI pages; ad shares from UK project-manager ads on Adzuna in October 2026. CPD points are continuing professional development hours; PDUs (professional development units) are PMI's equivalent.

The PMQ and PRINCE2 combine well: pass the PMQ, then add PRINCE2 7 Practitioner without the Foundation exam (the route totals are under What does the PMQ lead to?). Our PRINCE2 page covers its costs and levels.

The PMP needs years of leading projects and is priced in dollars. It fits UK project managers who already meet PMI's experience rule; the PMP page covers it in full. PMI's entry-level CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) appeared in 8 of the 6,205 UK project-manager ads in October 2026.

What do UK project managers earn?

For business and financial project management professionals (SOC 2440), the official job group closest to this role, median full-time gross pay was £59,834 a year in 2025. The middle half earned between £46,399 and £77,568 (Office for National Statistics (ONS), Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025, provisional, about 271,000 jobs).

The survey does not record certifications, and no source measures pay for PMQ holders. That range covers all jobs in that ONS group, with and without the PMQ; it says nothing about what the PMQ adds.

How to get the APM PMQ, step by step

  1. Check your experience. With two to three years of project work, or on an apprenticeship or degree in project management, go to the PMQ. With less, start with the PFQ.
  2. Ask your employer whether it will pay for a course or the exam.
  3. Choose a route: a course from an accredited training provider, or the open online exam (£528 member, £648 non-member) if you study alone.
  4. Study the syllabus in APM's handbook (about 75 hours on average) and practice long written answers.
  5. Prepare for the remote exam: webcam, microphone, a phone or tablet for the second camera, ID and a stable connection.
  6. After you pass, choose the next step: Full membership (MAPM) with three years of evidenced experience, or PRINCE2 7 Practitioner through PeopleCert.

Questions people ask

Do UK employers ask for the APM PMQ?

Some do. In October 2026, the word PMQ appeared in 4.3% of the ads for "project manager" in the UK that we counted on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. PRINCE2, a process-based project method certified by PeopleCert, appeared in 14% of the ads. An ad that mentions the APM PMQ (the Association for Project Management's Project Management Qualification) may list it as desirable rather than required, and ads that write only the full name are not in the PMQ count.

What is the passing score for the APM Project Management Qualification?

APM, the UK's Association for Project Management, publishes no fixed passing score for the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ). Its handbook (version 6, April 2026, read in October 2026) says the passing score varies between exam versions to allow for small differences in difficulty, and a panel of examiners and markers sets it for each paper. The exam is out of 90 marks, and a borderline fail (within one mark of the passing score) is re-marked automatically. Results arrive within eight weeks.

Can I take the APM PMQ without the PFQ?

Yes. APM, the UK's Association for Project Management, sets no formal entry requirement for the APM PMQ, so you do not need its Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ), the entry-level exam, first. APM suggests the PFQ for people without two to three years of project experience or a project management apprenticeship or degree. As checked in October 2026, the PFQ open exam (booked directly with APM and taken online at home) costs £278.40 for non-members and the PMQ open exam £648, value added tax (VAT) included.

Does the APM PMQ lead to Chartered Project Professional status?

APM, the UK's Association for Project Management, describes the APM PMQ as a pathway toward becoming a Chartered Project Professional (ChPP), its chartered standard for experienced project professionals. The condition: you must meet APM's experience requirements and go through its validation process. APM says the chartered standard is open to people without qualifications too. As checked in October 2026, the PMQ counts toward Full membership of APM (MAPM) under Route One, APM's membership route for people with an accepted qualification, with three years of evidenced project experience.

Can the APM PMQ replace PRINCE2 Foundation?

For entry to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner, yes. PeopleCert, which runs the exams for PRINCE2 (a process-based project method), accepts the APM PMQ (the Association for Project Management's Project Management Qualification) as an entry route to Practitioner, the level that tests applying the method. Someone holding the PMQ can skip Foundation (the entry level, sold as a £543 bundle of the exam plus a learning kit) and buy the £604 Practitioner bundle (PeopleCert UK store, value added tax included, checked October 3, 2026). That saves money only if you already hold the PMQ: by our arithmetic, the PMQ open exam at £648 plus Practitioner comes to £1,252, and Foundation plus Practitioner to £1,147.

Should I take the APM PMQ or PRINCE2 for UK jobs?

If you want to match the credentials that UK project-manager ads name, take PRINCE2, a process-based project method certified by PeopleCert, first. In October 2026, PRINCE2 appeared in 14% of the ads for "project manager" in the UK and the word PMQ in 4.3% (Adzuna, a job-ad search site). Choose the APM PMQ (the Association for Project Management's Project Management Qualification) if you want APM membership or the pathway APM describes toward Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) status. The PMQ also gives direct entry to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner, the higher PRINCE2 level.
