IPMA vs PRINCE2: which certification should you take?
The IPMA vs PRINCE2 choice depends on the ads you target: for UK project-manager jobs, start with PRINCE2, a project method, rather than IPMA (International Project Management Association) certification. In October 2026, the word PRINCE2 appeared in 14% of the ads for UK project managers and ipma in 10 of the 6,205 ads (Adzuna, a job-ad search site).
IPMA is a federation of about 70 member associations, the national project-management bodies that certify people against IPMA's competence standard at four levels, from D (the entry level) to A. In the UK, that body is IPMA UK. PRINCE2 (Projects In Controlled Environments) is a process-based method. PeopleCert, a certification company that bought AXELOS, the company that managed PRINCE2, in 2021, runs its exams at two levels: Foundation (the entry level) and Practitioner (applying the method).

Which do UK employers ask for, IPMA or PRINCE2?
If you choose by UK job ads, start with PRINCE2. Of the 6,205 UK ads titled project manager that we counted on Adzuna in October 2026, 840 contained the word PRINCE2 and 10 contained the word ipma.
Both counts are undercounts. An ad that names an IPMA level only as Level D, or names only ICB (IPMA's competence standard), is missing from the ipma count, and ads with other job titles are not counted at all. The PRINCE2 count covers any level of the certification. An ad can also mention a credential without requiring it, so read both counts as mentions.
US counts are shown below for context only. In US ads, the word ipma can also stand for other organizations that use the same acronym, so we base no advice on the US ipma count. If you apply in the US, our PMP vs PRINCE2 page covers the Project Management Professional (PMP) as well.

The US, Germany and Poland rows are context. Germany and Poland are shown because national IPMA member associations run the certification there: GPM (the German project-management association) through its certification body PM-ZERT in Germany, IPMA Polska in Poland. If your employer or your colleagues are based in one of those countries, read the ads there before you decide. Our project-manager role page lists the other credentials and skills UK employers name.

What is the difference between IPMA and PRINCE2?
IPMA certifies your competence as a project manager; PRINCE2 tests whether you know and can apply one method. IPMA calls its scheme the Four-Level-Certification (4-L-C) system and bases it on the Individual Competence Baseline (ICB4), its standard for the competences of people who manage projects, programs and portfolios.
| IPMA (UK route) | PRINCE2 7 | |
|---|---|---|
| Who certifies you in the UK | IPMA UK (UK IPMA Limited), which calls itself IPMA's UK member association and the exclusive UK provider of the four levels | PeopleCert, which sells the PRINCE2 exams |
| Levels | D: Certified Project Management Associate; C: Certified Project Manager; B: Certified Senior Manager; A: Certified Director | Foundation; Practitioner |
| Entry rule | Level D: no experience requirement. If you meet a level's competence requirements, you can apply to it directly, without starting at D | Foundation: no prerequisite listed. Practitioner: one listed certification, such as PRINCE2 7 Foundation or IPMA Level A, B, C or D |
| How you are assessed | D: written exam with 14 short-answer and 60 multiple-choice questions, plus a self-assessment. C: written exam with 14 short-answer questions, a summary of your project experience, ratings of your projects' management complexity, an interview and a self-assessment. B and A: a report, the experience summary, complexity ratings, an interview and a self-assessment; B adds an oral exam | Foundation: 60 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, closed book (no notes). Practitioner: 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, 150 minutes, open book (the official manual is allowed). Passing score 60% at both levels |
| Renewal | At every level, a self-assessment, an experience summary and a report of continuing professional development (CPD); no period stated on the IPMA UK pages we read | Every three years: 60 CPD points, or another exam in the same suite |
Source: IPMA UK certification, level and FAQ pages, read October 12, 2026; PeopleCert product and renewal pages, checked as dated in Sources (Practitioner entry list re-read October 12, 2026). A multiple-choice question asks you to pick the answer from a list.
From Level C up, IPMA UK assesses your own project experience through an experience summary and an interview. Both PRINCE2 levels are timed exams on the method. For Level D, IPMA UK points to three to six months of work on a project as helpful context for the exam.
Can you get IPMA certification in the UK?
Yes, through IPMA UK. IPMA's own list of member associations names IPMA-UK for the United Kingdom, and IPMA UK's website calls it the UK member association and the exclusive UK provider of IPMA's four-level certification. You apply through IPMA UK, as its pages describe.
A certification body is the unit that assesses and certifies people. For the UK, IPMA's list gives the entry Operated by CB USA as their Regional CB (CB stands for certification body), while IPMA UK's own pages describe an independent body that it has chartered. We could not confirm how the two fit together, so ask IPMA UK who will assess you.
IPMA UK says it has chartered an independent certification body that works to ISO 17024:2012, the international standard for bodies that certify persons, and that every assessment decision needs the agreement of two independent assessors. IPMA UK is a limited company registered in England. The Association for Project Management (APM) runs its own qualifications; our APM PMQ vs PRINCE2 page compares one of them, the APM PMQ, with PRINCE2.
Is IPMA certification recognized?
IPMA says it is a federation of about 70 member associations, with a presence in over 70 countries. Two facts show how others treat its levels. PeopleCert accepts IPMA Level A, B, C or D as entry to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner. In Germany, PM-ZERT is accredited (checked against a standard by an outside body) by DAkkS, the German accreditation body, to ISO/IEC 17024 for all four IPMA levels.
For the UK, we have IPMA UK's own description of its certification body (ISO 17024:2012) and no accreditation body named on the pages we read. Whether a given employer accepts an IPMA level is something only its ads or its recruiters can tell you.
Does IPMA let you skip PRINCE2 Foundation?
Yes, for entry to Practitioner. PeopleCert lists IPMA Level A, B, C or D among the certifications of which you need one before PRINCE2 7 Practitioner, next to PRINCE2 7 Foundation, older PRINCE2 certificates and other bodies' certificates such as the PMP.
So an IPMA holder can go straight to the £604 Practitioner bundle (price dated in the cost section below) and skip the Foundation bundle. Starting with no IPMA level, that route costs IPMA UK's fee for the level you apply to plus £604. We found no published UK fee, so we cannot say whether that route costs less than both PRINCE2 levels. Our PRINCE2 page covers both levels in full.

How much do IPMA and PRINCE2 cost?
PRINCE2 has published UK prices; on the IPMA UK pages we read, we found no fee list. PeopleCert's UK store sells PRINCE2 7 Foundation as a £543 bundle and Practitioner as a £604 bundle. Each bundle is an exam voucher (the prepaid right to take the exam) plus a learning resource kit, and both prices include value added tax (VAT, the UK sales tax).

|---|---|---|
| PRINCE2 Foundation only | £543 Foundation bundle | £543 |
| PRINCE2, both levels | £543 Foundation bundle + £604 Practitioner bundle | £1,147 |

| PRINCE2 renewal through PeopleCert Plus, three years | £129 + £129 + £129 | £387 |

For scale, here is what PM-ZERT, the certification body of the German member association GPM, charges in Germany. These are euro prices from its 2026 fee list, net of VAT (VAT is added on top), and they do not apply in the UK.
| IPMA level (Germany, PM-ZERT) | Initial certification | Initial, GPM member | Recertification, non-member |

How long are IPMA and PRINCE2 valid?
PRINCE2 must be renewed every three years; for IPMA, the period is set by the national body, and IPMA UK states none on the pages we read.
PeopleCert's renewal page lists "PRINCE2 Project Management (5th, 6th, and 7th editions)" among the certifications that need renewing every three years from the original certification date. You either log 60 CPD points (20 a year) through PeopleCert Plus, its membership at £129 a year in the UK, or pass another exam in the same suite.
IPMA UK's recertification asks, at every level, for a self-assessment, an experience summary and a report of your CPD. In Germany, PM-ZERT certificates at all four levels are valid for five years. Recertifying Level D there needs 175 hours of further training; Levels C to A also need at least 30 months of practical project-management experience.
Which should you take first?
For UK project-manager jobs, start with PRINCE2 Foundation. Choose IPMA first if an employer asks for an IPMA level, or if you want your own project experience assessed.
PRINCE2 first suits a project coordinator or junior project manager applying to UK employers. The first step is the £543 Foundation bundle (price dated in the cost section above), which lists no prerequisite. Add Practitioner once the ads you target ask for it.
IPMA first suits someone whose employer works with IPMA levels, for example a team with colleagues in Germany or Poland. Level D has no experience requirement at IPMA UK and is assessed by a written exam. Level C is assessed on your own project experience, through an experience summary and an interview, so it fits someone who has already run projects; IPMA UK lets you apply directly to any level once you meet its competence requirements. Ask IPMA UK for the fee, and which level fits you, before you apply; IPMA's member list gives its contact as [email protected]. An IPMA level then counts as entry to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner.
If you are also weighing APM's qualification, our APM PMQ vs PRINCE2 comparison covers that choice.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between IPMA and PRINCE2?
IPMA (the International Project Management Association) certifies a person's project-management competence at four levels, D to A. In the UK, IPMA UK is the body that runs it, and from Level C up the assessment covers your own project experience, including an interview. PRINCE2 (Projects In Controlled Environments) is one process-based project method. PeopleCert, a certification company, runs its exams at two levels: Foundation, a closed-book multiple-choice exam (you pick answers from a list, without notes), and Practitioner, an open-book exam (the official manual is allowed). These facts come from IPMA UK and PeopleCert pages read in October 2026.
Do UK employers ask for IPMA or PRINCE2?
If you choose by UK job ads, start with PRINCE2, a project method, rather than IPMA (International Project Management Association) certification. Adzuna is a job-ad search site. Of the UK ads titled project manager that we counted there in October 2026, the word PRINCE2 appeared in 14% of the ads and the word ipma in 10 of the 6,205 ads. Both counts are undercounts: an ad that names an IPMA level only as Level D, for example, is not in the IPMA count.
Does IPMA let you skip PRINCE2 Foundation?
Yes, for entry to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner. PeopleCert runs the PRINCE2 exams. Its Practitioner page, re-read October 12, 2026, lists IPMA Level A, B, C or D (the four levels of the International Project Management Association) among the certifications that give entry to Practitioner, the higher PRINCE2 level. An IPMA holder can skip Foundation, the entry level. PeopleCert's UK store sells the Practitioner bundle, an exam voucher (the prepaid right to take the exam) plus a learning kit, for £604 including value added tax (VAT, the UK sales tax), checked October 3, 2026.
How much does IPMA certification cost in the UK?
We found no published fee list on the pages of IPMA UK, the UK member association of the International Project Management Association (IPMA), that we read in October 2026, so ask IPMA UK for the fee before you apply; IPMA's member list gives its contact as [email protected]. For scale only: in Germany, the IPMA certification body PM-ZERT charges €699, net of VAT (value added tax), for an initial Level D certification in 2026. In the UK, PRINCE2 7 Foundation costs £543 in PeopleCert's store, including VAT (checked October 3, 2026).
How long are IPMA and PRINCE2 certifications valid?
PRINCE2 must be renewed every three years, says PeopleCert, the PRINCE2 exam company (checked October 3, 2026). You either log 60 CPD points (continuing professional development, 20 a year) through its PeopleCert Plus membership, £129 a year in the UK including VAT, or pass another exam in the same suite. IPMA UK, the UK body of the International Project Management Association, asks for a self-assessment, an experience summary and a CPD report to recertify, but states no validity period on the pages we read in October 2026, so ask IPMA UK about it when you ask for the fee. In Germany, the IPMA certification body PM-ZERT issues certificates valid for five years.
Is IPMA certification recognized?
For the UK, we found no outside accreditation body named for the certification of IPMA UK, the UK body of the International Project Management Association (IPMA), on the pages we read in October 2026. IPMA is a federation of about 70 member associations (national project-management bodies). Two facts we did verify in October 2026 show how others treat its levels. PeopleCert, the PRINCE2 exam company, accepts IPMA Level A, B, C or D as entry to PRINCE2 7 Practitioner. In Germany, the IPMA certification body PM-ZERT is accredited (checked against a standard by an outside body) by DAkkS, the German accreditation body, to ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies that certify people. In the UK, IPMA UK says its certification body works to ISO 17024:2012.
