The Six Sigma Green Belt vs PMP choice turns on your record: take the PMP (Project Management Professional) if you lead projects and qualify, or start with a Green Belt (a process-improvement certification) if not. In October 2026, pmp appeared in 14,183 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads on Adzuna and six sigma green belt in 364 of the 59,273.

The PMP is the credential of PMI, the Project Management Institute, for people who lead projects. Six Sigma, in the words of ASQ (the American Society for Quality), is "a method for disciplined quality improvement." A Green Belt is a team-member level: ASQ describes it as "working alongside or under the guidance of a Six Sigma Black Belt," the next level up, on improvement projects.

ASQ says it is one of several organizations that certify Six Sigma belts, so this page prices two: ASQ's Green Belt and the one from IASSC, the International Association for Six Sigma Certification. IASSC calls its belt Lean Six Sigma; Lean means cutting waste out of a process.

Which should you take now, a Green Belt or the PMP?

Take the PMP if you meet PMI's experience rule and want project-manager jobs; take a Green Belt if you do not yet qualify or your work is improving a process rather than running a project.

Your situation Take now Your next step
You do not yet have the years of project leadership PMI asks for IASSC Green Belt (no prerequisites) Pick a Green Belt course (IASSC tests but does not train), then buy IASSC's $350 exam voucher on iassc.org. Also start a dated record of every project you lead, with your role and hours, for a later PMP application
You have led projects for 36 months or more and hold a bachelor's degree PMP Finish the 35 hours of project management training PMI asks for, then apply
You work in quality, operations or a service team that tracks errors and delays Green Belt: ASQ if you have three years in its exam topics, IASSC if not Compare the issuer's exam topic list with the problems you fix at work
You are a business analyst Depends on the work: a Green Belt if you work on improving a process; the PMP only if you lead projects and meet PMI's rule Open ten business-analyst ads and note which credentials they name; we did not count the PMP in business-analyst ads
You already hold a Green Belt and have led improvement projects Six Sigma Black Belt Read our Green Belt vs Black Belt page
No target job yet Neither yet Open ten US ads each for project manager and quality or operations roles, and note which name the PMP, a belt or neither

For US project-manager jobs, the PMP is the credential to aim for once you qualify. Our broader PMP vs Six Sigma page covers both belts and how Lean fits in.

Can you take each exam yet?

Probably the IASSC Green Belt, since it has no entry rule; the ASQ Green Belt and the PMP both need years of work first, and not the same kind of work.

Credential What you need before the exam Earliest start
IASSC Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (ICGB) No prerequisites; IASSC recommends training and experience but does not require them Now
ASQ Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) Three years of full-time, paid work in one or more areas of the CSSGB Body of Knowledge (ASQ's official list of exam topics); no education waivers After three years of that work
PMP 36 to 60 months of experience leading projects in the past 10 years, by education level, or 24 months with a degree from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC); plus 35 hours of project management training After two to five years of leading projects

Source: IASSC and ASQ Green Belt pages; PMI PMP exam content outline 2026 and PMP pages.

PMI's months must be "non-overlapping," so two projects that ran at the same time count once. ASQ asks for work in its exam topic areas and PMI asks for time spent leading projects, so the same three years may meet one rule and not the other. An active CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management, another PMI certification) also meets the PMP training rule; our CAPM vs PMP page explains it.

The PMP training rule changes on December 1, 2026. From that date, a live class counts only if a training company PMI has approved (a PMI Authorized Training Partner), an eligible accredited college program or, in China, a PMI-registered provider delivers it. Training finished before that date stays eligible, and self-paced courses from any provider still count. Before you pay for a live class, check that PMI has approved the provider.

What does each cost in year one and over three years?

In year one, the exam alone costs $350 for the IASSC Green Belt and $483 for ASQ's Green Belt at nonmember price, as each issuer listed them, and $655 for the PMP at PMI's nonmember price in PMI's store; the read dates are under the table. The three-year view adds renewal: none for ASQ, a $175 exam for IASSC and a PMI fee with no published amount for the PMP. Each total assumes you pass on the first try and leaves out training.

Route Year one Over three years How the total is made
ASQ Green Belt, nonmember $483 $483 $483 exam x 1; valid for life, no renewal
ASQ Green Belt, member $383 plus ASQ membership $383 plus membership $483 minus the $100 member discount ASQ states (our arithmetic); membership price not checked
IASSC Green Belt $350 $525 $350 voucher (prepaid exam code) x 1 + $175 recertification exam at year 3 to keep Current status
PMP, PMI nonmember $655 At least $655, plus renewal fee $655 exam x 1 + PMI renewal fee at year 3 (no amount in PMI's handbook)
PMP, PMI member $554 At least $832, plus renewal fee Year one: $405 exam + $139 membership + $10 PMI application fee for new members. Three years: $405 exam + $139 x 3 + $10, assuming you keep membership all three years, plus the renewal fee at year 3

Source: ASQ and IASSC Green Belt and recertification pages, read October 12, 2026; PMI exam and membership fees as listed in PMI's online store on October 3, 2026. All prices are in US dollars. We could not recheck PMI's prices later in October 2026, so confirm them on PMI's PMP page before you pay.

A failed attempt adds a retake fee: $283 for the ASQ Green Belt, and $275 for PMI members or $375 for nonmembers on the PMP. PMI's renewal handbook says only that "Renewal fees are subject to membership and regional pricing," so we give no amount for the PMP renewal. The 35 hours of PMP training are not in these totals, and IASSC tests candidates but does not train them, so a Green Belt course is a separate purchase too.

What the PMP certification costs: required and optional fees (USD)
Joining first costs $554 (membership $139 + application fee $10 + exam $405), $101 less than the non-member exam ($655).

How long does each certification last?

The ASQ Green Belt lasts for life, the IASSC Green Belt stays Current for three years and the PMP must be renewed every three years.

  • ASQ Green Belt (CSSGB): ASQ says it "is valid for life," with no recertification.
  • IASSC Green Belt (ICGB): IASSC recognizes the certification for life, but its status reads Current for three years and then Elapsed. A recertification exam (50 questions, closed book, proctored, 1.5 hours, 70% to pass, $175) restores Current status if you take it before the Elapse date or within 90 days after it. Proctored means an exam supervisor watches you, in person or by webcam.
  • PMP: every three years, 60 PDUs (professional development units, each one hour of learning or of giving back to the profession), at least 35 of them in education and no more than 25 in giving back, plus PMI's renewal fee. If you miss the deadline, PMI suspends the PMP for one year; after that it expires, and you must apply, pay and take the exam again.

How often do US project-manager ads mention each?

In October 2026, the word pmp appeared in 24% of the ads for US project managers on Adzuna, and the phrase six sigma green belt in 364 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads. Both counts use the same project-manager search, the jobs a PMP holder would target, but the two phrases do not catch ads the same way (explained under the table).

Phrase counted US job title searched Ads containing the phrase All ads for that job title
pmp project manager 14,183 59,273
six sigma green belt project manager 364 59,273
six sigma green belt business analyst 14 13,543

Source: Adzuna API, US job ads collected in October 2026. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

The two phrases catch ads in different ways. pmp is a one-word acronym, so any ad containing the word PMP counts. The phrase six sigma green belt also matches ads that say Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, but not ads that say only Green Belt, only Six Sigma or an abbreviation such as CSSGB or LSSGB. An ad counts when it contains the phrase, whether it asks for the credential or only mentions it.

The business-analyst row is there for readers in that job, and it has its own base: a business analyst works out what a business needs changed, and we did not count the PMP in those ads. Our pages on the project-manager role and the business-analyst role list what else those ads name.

What project manager job ads name in the United States: certifications and skills
PMP is named in 24% of these ads, more than any skill we track (Agile, 12%).

How do the three exams compare?

The PMP exam is longer in questions; the ASQ Green Belt exam is the only one of the three that is open book.

Exam Questions Time Format
PMP (PMI) 180, of which 10 are unscored trial questions 240 minutes At a Pearson VUE test center (Pearson VUE is a testing company) or online with a proctor
ASQ Green Belt (CSSGB) 110 (100 scored, 10 unscored) 4 hours 18 minutes, in a 4.5-hour appointment Computer-delivered, English only, open book with bound reference materials
IASSC Green Belt (ICGB) 100 3 hours Closed book, proctored, at a test center or online through the proctoring system of PeopleCert, an exam-delivery company; 70% to pass

Source: PMI PMP page and exam content outline 2026; ASQ and IASSC Green Belt pages. We found no PMP passing score in the PMI pages we read.

As of October 12, 2026, ASQ listed its next computer-based testing window for the Green Belt as December 1 to 31, 2026, with an application deadline of November 9, 2026.

Does a Green Belt help you qualify for the PMP?

The PMI pages we read do not say either way. Those pages (the PMP page, the new-exam page, the 2026 exam content outline, the certification and renewal handbooks and the CAPM FAQ) do not mention Six Sigma or Lean. PMI asks for project management training and time spent leading projects.

If you led a Six Sigma project, check PMI's application instructions before you record it for a PMP application. Our PMP page and Six Sigma Green Belt page cover each credential on its own, and Google Project Management vs PMP compares another starting point for project work. For the belt after the Green Belt, see our Six Sigma Black Belt page.

What we did not check

  • The current PMP exam fee. PMI's store did not load for us when we rechecked prices later in October 2026, and an older archived copy of PMI's store data showed different prices, so check PMI's page before you pay.
  • The PMP renewal fee. PMI's handbook gives no amount.
  • The price of ASQ membership, and IASSC retake fees.
  • Training costs for any route, salaries and pass rates.
  • Belts from other issuers, including training firms and employers' in-house belts.
  • Which issuer the counted ads meant, and whether an ad asked for the credential or only mentioned it.

Questions people ask

Is a Six Sigma Green Belt or PMP better for a project manager?

If you already lead projects and meet the entry rule of PMI (the Project Management Institute), the PMP (Project Management Professional) is the credential built for project-manager work. In October 2026, the word pmp appeared in 14,183 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. If you do not yet have the two to five years of project leadership PMI asks for, a Six Sigma Green Belt from IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification), which sets no prerequisites, can come first.

Can I get a Six Sigma Green Belt without experience?

Yes, from IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification): its Lean Six Sigma Green Belt exam has no prerequisites. ASQ (the American Society for Quality) asks for three years of full-time, paid work in one or more areas of the Body of Knowledge (its official list of exam topics) for its Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB). ASQ grants no education waivers. Both rules were checked on the issuers' own pages in October 2026.

How much do the Six Sigma Green Belt and PMP cost?

On October 12, 2026, ASQ (the American Society for Quality) listed its Six Sigma Green Belt exam at $483 for nonmembers and said members save $100, which works out to $383. IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) listed its Green Belt exam voucher (a prepaid code you use to book the exam) at $350 and charged $175 for the recertification exam that keeps the belt listed as Current (IASSC's active status) after three years. PMI (the Project Management Institute) listed the PMP exam at $405 for members and $655 for nonmembers in its online store on October 3, 2026, and PMI membership cost $139 a year; confirm PMI's prices on its PMP page before paying. Training is extra on every route.

Does a Six Sigma Green Belt expire?

It depends on the issuer. ASQ (the American Society for Quality) says its Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) is valid for life and needs no recertification. IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) recognizes its Green Belt for life, but the status reads Current for three years and then Elapsed. A 50-question recertification exam keeps it Current; IASSC listed it at $175 on October 12, 2026. The PMP (Project Management Professional) is different: PMI renews it every three years against 60 PDUs (professional development units, one hour of learning or giving back each).

How often do US project-manager ads mention the PMP and the Six Sigma Green Belt?

In October 2026, the word pmp appeared in 14,183 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, and the phrase six sigma green belt in 364 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads. The Green Belt phrase also catches ads that say Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, but not ads that say only Green Belt or an abbreviation such as CSSGB. A one-word acronym and a four-word phrase do not count ads the same way.
