PMP certification vs Six Sigma: which one fits your work?
The PMP certification vs Six Sigma choice depends on your work. The PMP (Project Management Professional) from PMI, the Project Management Institute, suits people who lead projects and requires two to five years of it first. Six Sigma belts, issued by several bodies, suit people who fix how a work process runs.
Six Sigma is a method for improving quality by cutting variation (how much the same step gives different results each time) in a process. A belt is a certification level; this page covers Green Belt and Black Belt. Several bodies issue belts, and each writes its own rules for them.

ASQ is the American Society for Quality, which issues belts and also publishes the Body of Knowledge, its official list of exam topics. IASSC is the International Association for Six Sigma Certification, which runs belt exams but does not train anyone. ASQ's careers site says ASQ is one of several organizations that certify Six Sigma belts.

Which should you take first, PMP or Six Sigma?
Take the PMP first if you already lead projects and meet PMI's experience rule; take a Six Sigma belt first if your job is improving how a process runs. PMI says the PMP shows "your ability to lead projects without being tied to any specific methodology, industry or geography." ASQ describes Six Sigma work as a set of steps called DMAIC: define, measure, analyze, improve and control a process.
- You run projects with a budget, a schedule and a team, and have the years PMI asks for: the PMP.
- You run projects but have fewer years than PMI asks for: look at PMI's CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management); our CAPM vs PMP page explains its entry rule and the order. Keep a record of the dates and hours of every project you lead.
- You work in operations, manufacturing, quality or a service team that tracks errors and delays: a Six Sigma Green Belt. IASSC's version has no prerequisites; ASQ's needs three years of work in its topic areas.
- You already lead improvement projects and can document them: a Six Sigma Black Belt, which ASQ describes as aimed at people who lead quality improvement initiatives. Our Green Belt vs Black Belt page sets out which to take first.
- No target job yet: open ten ads for two or three jobs that interest you, such as project manager, operations analyst or quality engineer. Write down whether each ad names the PMP, a belt or neither, and which daily tasks it lists. The task list tells you which kind of work you are aiming at.

The phrases catch ads in different ways. pmp is a one-word acronym, so any ad that contains the word PMP counts, whatever the sentence around it says. The three Six Sigma phrases are multi-word phrases, so an ad that says only "Six Sigma" or "Lean Six Sigma" is not expected to be counted by them, and the six sigma certification count is an approximate match. An ad that names both belts counts in both belt rows. These counts are therefore not a measure of how many ads want each credential or how the credentials rank.
Compare rows only within the same job title. A program manager runs a group of related projects, and a business analyst works out what a business needs changed; each job title has its own total. We did not count the PMP in business-analyst ads. To use the table, see which phrases show up in project-manager ads, then open ten ads yourself (the last step in the first section) to see what your target employers ask for. Our pages on the project-manager role and the business-analyst role list what else those ads name.

What do you need before each exam?
The PMP has an experience gate set by PMI; Six Sigma gates depend on the issuer, from three years of work at ASQ to none at IASSC.
PMI sets the PMP experience rule by education, and all of it must be time spent leading projects in the past 10 years, counted once even if two projects ran together:
| Your education | Project leadership PMI asks for |
|---|---|
| Secondary school diploma | 60 months (5 years) |
| Associate degree (a two-year college degree) or similar vocational qualification | 48 months (4 years) |
| Bachelor's degree or higher | 36 months (3 years) |
| Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC); ask your school whether its program is | 24 months (2 years) |
Source: PMI, PMP exam content outline 2026.
You also need 35 hours of project management training, from an on-demand online course by any provider or from a live class. From December 1, 2026, a live class counts only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a PMI-approved provider in China or an eligible accredited college program runs it. An active CAPM also meets the training rule.
For Six Sigma, the rules differ by issuer:
- ASQ Green Belt: three years of full-time, paid work in one or more areas of its Body of Knowledge, ASQ's official list of exam topics. A degree does not shorten it.
- ASQ Black Belt: a full-time, paid role plus work experience and signed project statements. ASQ's wording is "3 Years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the CSSBB Body of Knowledge & one completed project with signed affidavit, or two completed projects with signed affidavits." An affidavit is a signed statement that confirms the project. Confirm the exact rule on ASQ's page. ASQ's Black Belt page does not ask for a Green Belt first.
- IASSC Green Belt and Black Belt: IASSC states there are no prerequisites for either exam.

Proctored means an exam supervisor watches you, in person or by webcam. *The 550 of 750 figure comes from ASQ's general exam results FAQ (read October 3, 2026); the two belt pages do not state a score.
PMI delivers the PMP at Pearson VUE test centers (Pearson VUE is a testing company) or online with a proctor, and allows up to three attempts within one year of PMI approving your application. PMI splits the PMP exam content into three areas: People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. ASQ's computer-based Six Sigma exams are in English only and are given in set testing windows (dates when ASQ lets you take the exam) listed on each belt page.
What does each cost to get and keep?
ASQ and IASSC publish their Six Sigma prices; PMI sets PMP fees by membership and region, so we give no PMP total. Every price below is in US dollars, as listed on the ASQ and IASSC pages on October 12, 2026, and training, books and memberships are extra. The totals assume you pass the first time.
| Route | Paid over the first three years | How the total is made |
|---|---|---|
| ASQ Green Belt, nonmember | $483 | $483 exam x 1; no renewal, valid for life |
| ASQ Black Belt, nonmember | $745 | $585 exam x 1 + $160 renewal fee for the journal (the log of your 18 recertification units) at year 3 |
| IASSC Green Belt | $525 | $350 voucher x 1 + $175 recertification exam at year 3 (to keep Current status) |
| IASSC Black Belt | $685 | $450 voucher x 1 + $235 recertification exam at year 3 (to keep Current status) |
| PMP | Not calculated | Exam fee and renewal fee set by PMI by membership and region |
Source: ASQ belt and recertification pages; IASSC belt and recertification pages. A voucher is a prepaid code you buy to book the exam.
ASQ offers paid membership; members save $100 on the first attempt at either belt, and the member renewal fee for the journal is $120. A failed ASQ attempt adds a retake fee of $283 for the Green Belt or $385 for the Black Belt. IASSC's vouchers are the US-dollar prices on IASSC's own pages.
For the PMP, PMI's renewal handbook says only that "Renewal fees are subject to membership and regional pricing." Member and nonmember prices differ, so look up both fees on PMI's PMP page before you budget. Add the cost of your 35 training hours too, unless an employer pays for them.

How do you keep each certification current?
The PMP renews every three years with 60 PDUs (professional development units, each one hour of learning or work that gives back to the profession) and a fee. At least 35 of the 60 must be education, and no more than 25 can be giving back. After a missed PMP renewal deadline, PMI suspends the PMP for one year; after that it expires, and you must reapply, pay again and retake the exam.
Six Sigma renewal depends on the issuer:
- ASQ Green Belt: valid for life, with no renewal.
- ASQ Black Belt: every three years, either 18 recertification units (credits for professional activity) logged in a journal, or a new exam. The $160 journal fee covers the log of those units. ASQ's recertification page prices the exam route at $485 for members and $585 for nonmembers. After a missed deadline there is a 60-day grace period, then the exam route.
- IASSC belts: IASSC recognizes them for life, so you do not lose the belt. Their status reads "Current" for three years and then "Elapsed." A shorter recertification exam restores Current status: 50 questions in 1.5 hours for the Green Belt, 75 questions in 2 hours for the Black Belt.
PMP certification vs Lean Six Sigma: what does Lean add?
Lean adds a focus on waste. ASQ puts it this way: "lean drives out waste (nonvalue-added processes and procedures) and promotes work standardization and flow," while Six Sigma focuses on reducing variation and tightening process control. ASQ says the line between the two has blurred and the name lean Six Sigma has become more common, since improvement work can call for both.
For the PMP choice, Lean Six Sigma sits on the same side as Six Sigma: process improvement, not project leadership. IASSC calls its belts Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt, and ASQ's recertification list includes a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. We did not compare the topic lists of Lean and non-Lean belts, so compare an issuer's exam topic list with the job you want.
Does Six Sigma training count toward the PMP?
PMI does not say either way. Its PMP page, exam content outline, certification handbook and renewal handbook, as we read them, do not mention Six Sigma or Lean. PMI asks for project management training and for experience leading projects. Whether a Six Sigma course or a Black Belt project fits those rules is PMI's call when it reviews your application, so use the contact details on PMI's PMP page before counting on it.
Should you get both, and in what order?
Get both when your job mixes leading projects with improving processes, for example running operations projects in a plant or a service center. A project can use DMAIC (the five Six Sigma steps), so the two meet in project work.
The order follows the entry rules. Without PMI's years of project leadership, a Six Sigma Green Belt from IASSC has no entry rule, and ASQ's needs three years in its topic areas. If you already qualify for the PMP and lead projects, the PMP is the one that matches that work. For other project credentials, read ITIL vs PMP, PMP vs PRINCE2, Google Project Management vs PMP and our guide to certifications worth getting. Our Six Sigma Black Belt page covers that belt on its own.
What we did not check
- The current PMP exam fee. PMI's store data showed different PMP prices in the copies we saw, and the live store did not load for us on October 12, 2026.
- The PMP renewal fee. PMI's handbook gives no amount.
- Salaries and pass rates for the PMP or any Six Sigma belt. For pay, check a job-ad site for the title you want.
- The PMP exam's book rules and passing score. PMI's PMP page is the place to look.
- IASSC retake fees, the price of ASQ membership, and prices in other currencies or through resellers.
- Whether Lean and non-Lean belts cover different exam topics.
- Belts from issuers other than ASQ and IASSC, including employers' in-house belts.
- Yellow Belt and Master Black Belt.
- Job ads outside the US. The Six Sigma phrase counts in other countries are small samples, read with care.
- Which issuer the counted ads meant, and whether an ad asked for the credential or only mentioned it.

Questions people ask
Is PMP better than Six Sigma?
Neither is better in general, because they certify different work. The PMP (Project Management Professional) from PMI, the Project Management Institute, is for people who lead projects and asks for two to five years of project leadership before the exam. A Six Sigma belt (a certification level such as Green Belt or Black Belt) is for people who measure a work process and remove the causes of its errors. Choose by the work you do now or want next.
Can you do PMP and Six Sigma together?
Yes. The PMP (Project Management Professional) from PMI, the Project Management Institute, and a Six Sigma belt come from separate bodies with separate rules, so nothing stops you from holding both. A project can use the five Six Sigma steps, so the two overlap in project work. If you lack the two to five years of project leadership PMI asks for, a Six Sigma Green Belt from IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification), which sets no prerequisites, can come first.
Is Lean Six Sigma the same as Six Sigma?
Close, but not the same. ASQ (the American Society for Quality) says Six Sigma focuses on reducing variation (how much the same step gives different results each time) in a process, while lean drives out waste, meaning steps that add no value, and promotes doing each task the same agreed way, with work moving smoothly. ASQ adds that the line between them has blurred. IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) names its belts Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt.
Does Six Sigma count toward PMP requirements?
PMI, the Project Management Institute, does not say. Its PMP (Project Management Professional) pages and handbooks that we read in October 2026 do not mention Six Sigma or Lean. PMI asks for 35 hours of project management training and two to five years of experience leading projects. Whether a Six Sigma course or Black Belt project counts is PMI's decision, so use the contact details on PMI's PMP page.
How much do the PMP and Six Sigma cost?
For the PMP (Project Management Professional), PMI, the Project Management Institute, sets the exam and renewal fees by membership and region, so check PMI's PMP page for your price. Six Sigma prices depend on the issuer. In October 2026, ASQ (the American Society for Quality) charged nonmembers $483 for its Green Belt exam and $585 for its Black Belt exam. IASSC (the International Association for Six Sigma Certification) sold exam vouchers (prepaid exam codes) for $350 and $450.
How often do US job ads mention PMP and Six Sigma?
In October 2026, the word pmp appeared in 14,183 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. The phrase six sigma green belt appeared in 364 of the 59,273 US project-manager ads. A one-word acronym and a multi-word phrase catch ads in different ways, so compare the two counts with care.
