Is ITIL certification worth it?
7.5% of IT support job ads in the United States name the ITIL (206 of 2,745, Adzuna, October 2026)
ITIL certification is worth it for IT-support and system-administrator jobs, especially when your employer pays. Of the 2,745 US IT-support ads we counted in October 2026, 206 named ITIL, a share of 7.5% (Adzuna). In US system-administrator ads, the figure was 7.8% of 6,233 ads. Foundation costs $690 in PeopleCert's US store.
Foundation needs no experience, and the price does not include renewal. ITIL 4 is being replaced by ITIL 5 (officially "ITIL (Version 5)"), and PeopleCert plans to retire the ITIL 4 exams on December 31, 2027. ITIL 4 or ITIL 5? · Costs · How we count ads.
Verdict by situation:
- You work on a service desk or in IT support and want to move up: take Foundation, ideally paid by your employer (IT-support figures).
- You are a system administrator: worth it as a second credential next to your technical ones, most of all, in our reading, where change control is formal (sysadmin figures).
- You manage projects: only if they sit inside IT operations; otherwise look at the PMP or PRINCE2 (project-manager figures).
- You have no IT job yet: start with a technical certificate such as CompTIA A+; ITIL can wait.
- You hold ITIL 4 Foundation already: keep it; it counts toward the ITIL 5 higher levels. The $263 Bridge exam earns you ITIL Foundation (Version 5) as well, if you want the new name on your resume before the Bridge retires at the end of 2027.
- You pay for it yourself on a tight budget: compare training-provider packages and wait for a PeopleCert discount; the July 2026 copy of its ITIL 4 page showed the $690 bundle at $517.

Is ITIL Foundation worth it for IT support?
For people already in IT support, yes, whether you take ITIL 4 or ITIL 5. ITIL is a framework for running IT services: how a service desk logs and resolves incidents, handles requests, manages changes and agrees service levels with the business. An ad that names ITIL is telling you its team works that way, and its interviewers may ask you to explain those terms.
In the US, ITIL appeared in 206 of 2,745 IT-support ads in October 2026. In the UK, it appeared in 95 of 1,286. In Germany, 107 of 1,973 IT-support ads named it. India's sample is small: 32 of 259 IT-support ads named ITIL.
Put those figures in context. The IT-support ads in each country we count name ITIL only in the shares above, so it is a filter that some employers use, not an entry ticket. Our count includes ads that list ITIL as preferred as well as required, and ads that ask for "ITIL knowledge" without asking for the certificate, since both contain the word. We count IT-support ads as one group; we do not split help-desk, desktop-support and service-desk titles. For the full list of credentials employers name for this job, see which certificates IT-support ads name.
Our reading: in IT support, ITIL works best as the second certificate. A technical credential gets you through the door for a first job; ITIL helps when you want a team-lead, service-desk-manager or service-delivery role. A poster on Reddit who once managed a service desk described exactly that route: "My path out of service desk was managing service desk and ITIL was certainly part of that" (r/ITIL, August 2025).
ITIL for system administrators
Of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads we counted in October 2026, 489 named ITIL, a share of 7.8%. In Germany, 84 of 2,921 Systemadministrator ads named it. Our UK sample for this title is small, so we do not draw a UK conclusion.
A sysadmin works inside ITIL processes even without the certificate: change requests before maintenance windows, incident tickets when a server fails, problem records when it fails again. ITIL Foundation gives you the vocabulary that change boards and service managers use. It does not test any technical skill, so it never replaces a Linux, Windows Server or cloud credential. Our reading: ITIL counts where change control is formal, as in large organizations and managed-service providers. Our data does not split ads by employer type, so check a sample of ads in your target sector.
For the technical certificates employers name for this job, see which certificates system-administrator ads name. All the IT-support and networking credentials we track are on our field page for IT support and networking.
ITIL for project managers
Project managers see ITIL in a minority of ads. In the US, ITIL appeared in 702 of the 59,273 project-manager ads in October 2026. In India, it appeared in 51 of the 2,413 project-manager ads.
These are project-manager ads of every kind, from construction to marketing, so ITIL turns up mainly where the project sits in IT operations: service transitions, infrastructure upgrades, rollouts of a service-management tool. If that is your work, ITIL Foundation adds the language of the people who will run what you deliver. For project jobs in general, the credentials employers name are on our project-manager role page, and our ITIL vs PMP comparison covers the choice between the two.
Is ITIL 4 still worth it now that ITIL 5 is out?
If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, yes: it stays valid until its renewal date and counts toward the ITIL 5 higher levels. If you are starting now, take ITIL 5 instead; it costs the same and has no 2027 end date. ITIL 5 is the common name for ITIL (Version 5), which PeopleCert is releasing in phases, with Foundation and the Bridge exam already on sale. PeopleCert says ITIL 4 remains available for people who want to continue on that path. Its current plan is to retire all ITIL 4 modules, and the Foundation Bridge itself, on December 31, 2027. In the latest copy of its ITIL FAQ we could read (May 2026), PeopleCert said voucher validity dates for ITIL 4 would be announced later.
Three facts decide the choice:
- Both Foundation exams cost the same in PeopleCert's US store: $690 for the exam bundle. Price is no reason to pick the old version.
- ITIL 4 certificates stay valid prerequisites for the Version 5 higher levels, according to PeopleCert. An ITIL 4 Foundation holder does not have to retake Foundation to move up.
- Some ads still say ITIL v4. A poster on Reddit noticed that "basically all job listings still have 'ITIL v4' listed as a cert, not v5" (r/ITIL, April 2026). Our count matches the word ITIL in any version, so it cannot tell which version an ad names.
ITIL 4 vs ITIL 5: which Foundation to take
ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is the current syllabus. On your resume, write "ITIL Foundation (Version 5), PeopleCert" so that a keyword search for "ITIL" still finds it.
One poster asked whether to get both versions (r/ITIL, May 2026). There is no need to pay for both Foundation exams. If you already hold an ITIL 4 certificate and want the Version 5 title, the ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5) costs $263 in the US store: 20 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, closed book, 65% to pass. It covers only what changed, and it is optional. Another poster asked whether to use ITIL 4 practice exams for Version 5 (r/ITIL, May 2026). The syllabus changed: PeopleCert lists topics such as the product and service lifecycle and value stream mapping for Version 5 Foundation, so practice with Version 5 questions. If you hold only ITIL v3 Foundation, PeopleCert does not accept it as a prerequisite for the Version 5 higher levels, and the Bridge requires an ITIL 4 certificate, so take ITIL Foundation (Version 5).
For people halfway up the ITIL 4 ladder, such as a Foundation holder planning the ITIL 4 Strategic Leader path (r/ITIL, April 2026), the deadline is the risk. Under PeopleCert's current plan, every ITIL 4 module must be passed before the end of 2027, and PeopleCert has not announced how long ITIL 4 vouchers stay valid. Holders of ITIL 4 Managing Professional or ITIL 4 Master, and of ITIL v3 Expert or Master, get a shorter route into Version 5: the Managing Professional Transition, with an open-book exam and recommended training of as little as 5 days against 8 to 12 days on the regular route, per PeopleCert.
ITIL 5 certification path: the higher designations
ITIL Foundation is the entry point. Above it, Version 5 has four designations, each earned by passing a set of modules, according to PeopleCert's ITIL FAQ:
| Designation | Modules after Foundation |
|---|---|
| ITIL Practice Manager | One specialization module of your choice, plus Transformation |
| ITIL Managing Professional | Product, Service, Experience and Transformation |
| ITIL Strategic Leader | Strategy and Transformation |
| ITIL Master | All three designations above |
The three Practice Manager modules each bundle five practices:
- Monitor, Support and Fulfil: service desk, incident management, problem management and two others.
- Plan, Implement and Control: change enablement, release management, IT asset management and two others.
- Collaborate, Assure and Improve: service-level management, supplier management, information security management and two others.
Transformation counts once toward every designation. AI Governance is an extra module outside the designations.
For a service-desk worker, the logical next step after Foundation is Monitor, Support and Fulfil, the module built around the work you already do. Check that it is on sale before you plan around it: in its May 2026 FAQ, PeopleCert said the exam format for the Practice Manager modules was still being finalized. One poster pointed out that the practice detail ITIL 4 Foundation used to include now sits in that separate paid module (r/ITIL, March 2026). Our job-ad count cannot tell which level employers want: an ad that names ITIL counts once, whatever level it asks for.

ITIL 4 and ITIL 5 Foundation exam cost
PeopleCert owns ITIL, sets the exams and sells them directly. Its store shows prices for the buyer's location, so the price you see depends on your country. The US prices in this section come from archived copies of PeopleCert's product pages with the location set to the United States; the euro price is the default PeopleCert shows a buyer in the EU. Accredited training organizations set their own prices.
| Option | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| ITIL Foundation (Version 5), exam bundle | $690 | Exam voucher, official eBook, learning resource kit |
| ITIL Foundation (Version 5), with eLearning | $1,029 | Adds 9 hours of eLearning and auto-graded sample exams |
| ITIL Foundation (Version 5), eLearning+ | $1,338 | Adds a free exam retake and an official mock exam |
| ITIL 4 Foundation, exam bundle | $690 | Same contents as the Version 5 bundle |
| ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5), exam bundle | $263 | For holders of an ITIL 4 certificate, except the Cloud and Sustainability specialist modules |
| ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert's EU store | €649 | Exam bundle, VAT included, as shown to an EU buyer |
| PeopleCert Plus membership (renewal by professional development points) | $133 a year | $399 over a three-year cycle |
Source: PeopleCert product pages for ITIL Foundation (Version 5), ITIL 4 Foundation, Foundation Bridge and PeopleCert Plus, US-location prices including any tax, read from Internet Archive copies dated July 29 to October 4, 2026; EU price read October 3, 2026. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
The ITIL 4 Foundation exam cost is therefore $690 in the US store, the same as Version 5. All in, a new Foundation holder who takes no further ITIL exam pays $690 up front plus $399 for three years of PeopleCert Plus to keep the certificate current: $1,089 over the first three-year cycle at US store prices. If you take a higher module before your renewal date, once the module you want is on sale, that exam renews Foundation and replaces the $399.
PeopleCert runs discounts from time to time: the July 2026 copy of the ITIL 4 page showed 25% off, $517 for the bundle. If you pay for it yourself, wait for one or compare packages from accredited training organizations, which can bundle eLearning and the voucher. One reply on Reddit called buying direct from PeopleCert "usually the most expensive way to do it" (r/ITIL, May 2026). Check that a seller is accredited by PeopleCert before you pay.
The price draws complaints. A poster coming from AWS certificates objected to paying $690 for a 60-minute exam (r/ITIL, April 2026). The price includes the official eBook and learning kit, and replies in that thread pointed out that ITIL is mostly bought by employers for their staff. That matches a rule posted in the Reddit thread quoted below: let your employer pay. PeopleCert's product pages do not say how long an exam voucher stays valid, so ask the seller before you buy and book once you have a study plan. Where to buy, in short: PeopleCert's store or an accredited training organization, never an unaccredited voucher reseller.

How hard is the ITIL 4 or ITIL 5 Foundation exam?
It tests definitions, not technical skill, but the wording trips people up. ITIL 4 Foundation and ITIL Foundation (Version 5) share one format: 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with a passing score of 65%, which means 26 correct answers. If you take the exam in a language that is not your native or working language, you may get extra time; one reply on Reddit put it at 75 minutes in total (r/ITIL, August 2025). There are no labs and no calculations; the questions test definitions, the guiding principles and how practices fit together.
Posters on Reddit split on difficulty. One called it "mostly vocabulary and light application of general concepts" (r/ITIL, August 2026). Others who passed Version 5 found the real exam harder than the mock exams: one scored 33 of 40 after making only one or two mistakes in the mock exams (r/ITIL, October 2026). Two of the posters who passed Version 5 blamed ambiguous wording. The fix is to read each question for what it asks and answer in ITIL's own terms.
How long does it take to get ITIL 4 or ITIL 5 Foundation?
About one to two weeks in the posts that reported it. In the Reddit posts we collected, 15 first-person statements of study time had a median of one week, with the middle half between one and two weeks. That group is self-selected and skewed toward people who passed and posted. PeopleCert's own eLearning for Version 5 Foundation is 9 hours of content. People who already work on a service desk tend to need less time, because the concepts describe their daily work.
For study materials, start with the official ones. The $690 exam bundle includes the official eBook and a learning resource kit with a learner workbook; PeopleCert lists the official mock exam only in the $1,338 eLearning+ package, and its product page offers a free quick preview exam in the real format. Posters who bought the mock describe two versions, A and B (r/ITIL, September 2026). One poster whose employer was pushing staff to certify asked whether a low-cost third-party ITIL 5 book was good enough (r/ITIL, September 2026). The official eBook already comes with the exam bundle, so check a third-party book against the official syllabus before you rely on it. For ITIL 4 Foundation, one poster who passed after a month of two hours a day used the official eBook, official practice exams and Udemy practice tests (r/ITIL, August 2025). Another asked how to prepare with four days left (r/ITIL, March 2026); with practice questions in the real format, that is tight but possible for someone who already works in IT support.
Exam day: online proctoring
You can take the exam online with a remote proctor. Questions from posters center on the room scan and check-in (r/ITIL, June 2026). Read PeopleCert's candidate guidelines before the day, test your webcam and clear your desk. Rescheduling is free up to 48 hours before the exam; after that PeopleCert charges $60, and $120 within the last four hours. The PeopleCert pages we read do not say when results and the certificate arrive, so check the candidate guidelines for that too.
Does ITIL 4 expire? Renewal rules for ITIL 4 and ITIL 5
Under PeopleCert's current rule, yes: ITIL 4 and ITIL (Version 5) certificates must be renewed every three years from the original certification date. Not every certificate carries an expiration date: one poster's older certificate reads "Expiry: Never" (r/ITIL, September 2025). Check the date printed on your own certificate. PeopleCert gives three ways to renew:
- Join PeopleCert Plus and log 20 continuing professional development (CPD) points a year for three years, 60 in total. The membership costs $133 a year in the US store, $399 over the cycle.
- Pass another exam in the ITIL product suite before your renewal date. Passing any Version 5 exam, the $263 Bridge included, renews your ITIL 4 certificates too.
- Retake the same certification ($690 for Foundation in the US store).
If you were going to take another ITIL module within three years anyway, that exam renews Foundation with no separate renewal fee. An ITIL 4 Foundation holder who does not plan to move up can renew with the $263 Bridge, which costs less than $399 of PeopleCert Plus, as long as the renewal falls before the Bridge retires at the end of 2027. After that, the new Version 5 certificate follows the Version 5 routes. A Version 5 Foundation holder has no Bridge option: PeopleCert Plus, a higher module or a retake.
How much renewal matters depends on the employer. One manager on Reddit who had hired IT staff for 30 years said that "in zero cases" did checking the certificate include looking at its validity (r/ITIL, March 2025). That is one hiring manager, not a rule; employers can check with PeopleCert's certificate verification service.

ITIL certification salary: what we can and cannot say
No official source measures pay for ITIL holders separately. Government pay surveys record jobs, not certificates, and we do not count salaries in ads. So we do not publish an ITIL 4 salary or an ITIL 4 Foundation salary figure. Course sites that publish one show the pay of jobs that ask for ITIL, such as service-management and senior roles. That figure does not tell you what passing a 60-minute exam adds to your own pay.
What ITIL can do is get you considered for those roles. Pay depends on the job you move into: service-desk lead, service-delivery manager or change manager. Our IT-support role page and system-administrator role page cover those jobs and what employers name for them.

ITIL vs other certifications
ITIL vs CompTIA A+: A+ tests hardware, operating systems and troubleshooting; ITIL tests how a service is run. For a first IT-support job, A+ comes first. See our CompTIA A+ vs ITIL comparison, our CompTIA vs ITIL comparison for CompTIA's other exams, and the Google IT Support Certificate, a course-based alternative for beginners.
ITIL vs CCNA: different jobs. The CCNA proves you can configure and troubleshoot networks; ITIL covers the change and incident processes a network team works within. Our CCNA vs ITIL comparison covers both in detail.
ITIL vs PMP and PRINCE2: the PMP and PRINCE2 are project credentials; ITIL is about running services after a project ends. PeopleCert owns both ITIL and PRINCE2, and its renewal page lists both among the certifications that need renewing. See our ITIL vs PMP comparison for the two side by side. ITIL vs Six Sigma: Six Sigma is a method for reducing process defects and variation; see ITIL vs Six Sigma.
ITIL vs Scrum
ITIL is a framework for managing IT products and services across their lifecycle, from design to support. Scrum is a framework for how one team builds a product in short cycles. They answer different questions and an organization can use both: a team builds a feature in Scrum sprints, and ITIL's change and release practices govern how it reaches users. If you are choosing a certificate, pick by the work: delivery teams name Scrum credentials, while operations and service-desk teams name ITIL. Our Scrum master certification page covers the Scrum side.
Is ITIL Foundation worth it? What Reddit posters say about ITIL 4 and 5
We read ITIL threads in r/ITIL from 2025 and 2026. Reddit is a self-selected sample, so these are themes, not statistics.
- Let your employer pay. The most upvoted reply in a thread about paying around $650 out of pocket said "Only take ITIL if 100% employer-funded" (r/ITIL, August 2026).
- Experience first. A holder of ITIL, the PMP and PSM I wrote that no certificate is worth it without some experience to back it up (same thread).
- Interviews test the concepts. The poster who opened that thread had struggled when an interviewer asked about incidents, service-level agreements (SLAs) and prioritization, the core of Foundation (r/ITIL, August 2026).
- Price anger is common. Threads asking why the exam costs so much draw many replies; several say prices rose after PeopleCert took over (r/ITIL, September 2025).
How to get ITIL certified, step by step
- Ask your employer whether it pays for ITIL training or exams.
- Choose the version: ITIL Foundation (Version 5) if you are starting now; finish ITIL 4 modules only if you are already on that path and can complete them before December 31, 2027.
- Buy the exam bundle from PeopleCert ($690 in the US store) or a package from an accredited training organization. Ask how long the voucher is valid and book a date within it.
- Study the official eBook and practice with questions in the real format under exam conditions.
- Take the exam online with a remote proctor: 40 questions, 60 minutes, 26 correct to pass.
- Plan renewal from day one: CPD through PeopleCert Plus, or your next ITIL exam within three years.

Questions people ask
What is in ITIL 5?
ITIL 5 is the short name for ITIL (Version 5), PeopleCert's update of the framework. Foundation and the Foundation Bridge are on sale; higher modules are being released in phases. Above Foundation there are four designations: ITIL Practice Manager, ITIL Managing Professional, ITIL Strategic Leader and ITIL Master, each built from modules, with AI Governance as an extra module. New Foundation topics include the product and service lifecycle and value stream mapping. Our section on the ITIL 5 certification path lists the modules.
Is the ITIL 5 exam hard?
The ITIL 5 Foundation exam has the same format as ITIL 4 Foundation: 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, 26 correct answers to pass. Posters who passed it on Reddit called the content mostly vocabulary, but some found the real exam harder than the mock exams, and two blamed ambiguous wording. Details are in our section on how hard the exam is.
Has ITIL 5 been released?
Yes, in part. PeopleCert sells ITIL Foundation (Version 5) and the ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5), and it is releasing the higher modules in phases. ITIL 4 exams remain on sale until PeopleCert retires them, planned for December 31, 2027. Both Foundation exam bundles cost $690 in PeopleCert's US store.
Is ITIL still relevant in 2026?
For IT operations, yes. Of the 2,745 US IT-support ads we counted in October 2026, 206 named ITIL. Most ads in that group do not name it, so treat it as a filter some employers use. PeopleCert has updated the framework as ITIL (Version 5), which it describes as guidance for digital product and service management in AI-enabled environments.
Should I get ITIL after the PMP, or go for the PMI-RMP?
It depends on the work you do next. ITIL describes how IT services are run day to day: incidents, changes, service levels. The PMI-RMP deepens the risk side of project work you already know from the PMP. A poster on Reddit who had just passed the PMP and found a free ITIL course worried that unrelated certificates could hurt a resume more than help it (r/ITIL, April 2026). Our reading: take ITIL if you run projects inside an IT department or a managed-service provider; take the RMP if risk is your specialty. Of the 59,273 US project-manager ads we counted in October 2026, 702 named ITIL. Our ITIL vs PMP comparison covers the overlap.
Is there a free ITIL certification?
No. PeopleCert charges for every ITIL exam, bought directly or through an accredited training organization. Free videos and practice questions can help you study, but the certificate comes only from a paid PeopleCert exam. Many people get it through work: ask your employer before you pay.
Can I get ITIL with no IT experience?
Yes. Foundation has no prerequisite, and PeopleCert describes it as suitable for any career stage. Whether it helps you get a first IT job is another question. A Reddit commenter who calls himself "the ITIL guy" wrote that for entry-level IT "Comptia A+ beats ITIL every time" and that he looks for ITIL only in experienced staff in roles such as the service desk (r/ITIL, June 2025). Our CompTIA A+ page covers that first step.
Is ITIL worth it in India?
For IT-support and system-administrator roles, some Indian ads name it. Of the 259 Indian IT-support ads we counted in October 2026, 32 named ITIL. In system-administrator ads, it was 43 of 270. Both samples are small, so a handful of ads can change the share visibly. We have not checked a rupee price; PeopleCert's store shows the price for the location you choose at checkout.
Does the ITIL Foundation Bridge renew my ITIL 4 certificate?
Yes. PeopleCert says passing any ITIL (Version 5) certification renews ITIL 4 certificates, because all ITIL certificates sit in one product suite. The Bridge is a 20-question, 30-minute exam that costs $263 in PeopleCert's US store, and it earns you ITIL Foundation (Version 5) as well. PeopleCert plans to retire the Bridge on December 31, 2027, so this route works only until then.
