ITIL vs CCNA: which fits your IT job?
The ITIL vs CCNA choice depends on your job: take the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) for network-engineer work and ITIL Foundation (PeopleCert's entry exam in running IT services) for IT support. In October 2026, 1,557 of 9,475 US network-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, contained ccna; 206 of 2,745 US IT-support ads contained itil.
The two do not compete for the same job. The CCNA is Cisco's associate-level networking certification: one exam, 200-301, on building and running the networks that connect a company's computers. ITIL is a framework, a published set of recommended practices for IT service management (ITSM: how IT teams deliver, support and change the services staff depend on). PeopleCert sells the ITIL exams, and ITIL Foundation is the first of them. Version 5 is the newest ITIL edition; PeopleCert plans to retire the older ITIL 4 modules, as the study section explains.
Our job-ad data follows the same split. We count ccna only in network-engineer ads and itil only in IT-support, system-administrator and project-manager ads, so no job has both counts and this page does not rank the two against each other.

Which should you take: ITIL or CCNA?
Take the CCNA if you want to build and run networks, and ITIL Foundation if you work in IT support or operations and want to move toward service management. Use the table to find your row.
| Your job now or next | First certification | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Network engineer, network administrator or NOC technician (network operations center: the team that watches a company's network) | CCNA | CCNP, Cisco's professional-level certification |
| Help desk or service desk, moving toward service management | ITIL Foundation | ITIL's next level, Practice Manager, which starts with one topic module, such as Monitor, Support and Fulfil (service desk, incident and problem work) |
| System administrator | ITIL Foundation, where the ads you target name it | CCNA if your job covers the network; we did not count ccna in system-administrator ads |
| IT service manager or IT project manager | ITIL Foundation | Our ITIL vs PMP comparison for the project side |
| No IT job yet | CCNA only if networking is your clear target | Otherwise start with our CompTIA vs ITIL comparison |
- Networking. The CCNA fits this path, and Cisco sets no prerequisite for it. It is one of three associate-level CCNAs, next to CCNA Automation and CCNA Cybersecurity; the plain CCNA is the networking one. Our CCNA page covers the exam in detail, and our CCNA vs CCNP comparison covers the next step.
- Help desk or service desk. A service desk is the first-line team that logs and fixes users' IT problems. ITIL's practices include incident management (getting a broken service back quickly), change management (approving and scheduling changes) and problem management (finding the cause behind repeat incidents). On PeopleCert's ladder, ITIL Practice Manager adds two more exams after Foundation: one of three topic modules and a Transformation module. Our ITIL page covers those levels. For a certification in the desk's hands-on technical work first, our CompTIA vs ITIL comparison covers CompTIA A+, CompTIA's IT-support certification.
- System administrator (the person who keeps a company's servers and user accounts running). We count
itilin these ads but notccna, so check the ads you target before you pay for either. - No IT job yet. In our reading, neither is the usual first step unless networking is your clear target. The CompTIA vs ITIL comparison starts with CompTIA A+, CompTIA's IT-support certification. If you want networking, our CCNA vs CompTIA comparison sets the CCNA next to Network+, CompTIA's networking exam.
Before you pay, search a job site for the title you want in your city, open ten ads and write down the certifications they name. That list is a better guide for your area than any national count.
Is the CCNA worth it for network-engineer jobs?
Yes, if network-engineer work is your goal: that is the job where we count the CCNA, in US, UK and India ads. In October 2026, 1,557 of 9,475 US network-engineer ads on Adzuna contained the phrase ccna.
| Country | Network-engineer ads counted | Containing ccna |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 9,475 | 1,557 |
| United Kingdom | 658 | 74 |
| India | 775 | 121 |
Source: Adzuna API, network-engineer ads collected in October 2026, searched for the phrase ccna. Analysis: CertWorthIt. We did not count itil in network-engineer ads.
The ccna count takes any ad that mentions the CCNA, whether the employer lists it as required, preferred or optional; our methodology page explains the method. Our network-engineer role page lists the other certifications and skills those ads name.
Where do job ads name ITIL?
We count itil in three jobs: IT support, system administration and project management. Each row has its own base, and none of these counts can be set next to the CCNA figures, because we did not count ccna in these ads.
| Job and country | Ads counted | Containing itil |
|---|---|---|
| IT support, US | 2,745 | 206 |
| IT support, UK | 1,286 | 95 |
| IT support, India | 259 | 32 |
| System administrator, US | 6,233 | 489 |
| System administrator, India | 270 | 43 |
| Project manager, US | 59,273 | 702 |
| Project manager, UK | 6,205 | 40 |
| Project manager, India | 2,413 | 51 |
Source: Adzuna API, ads collected in October 2026, searched for the phrase itil. Analysis: CertWorthIt.
The itil count takes any ad that names ITIL in any version or level, or asks for ITIL knowledge. Ads that describe the same work as IT service management without the word ITIL are not in it. Our role pages for IT support, system administrators and project managers show what else those ads list.
How hard are the exams, and how long do people study?
People report months of study for the CCNA and weeks for ITIL Foundation in the Reddit posts we collected. In those posts, 15 people who said how long they studied for the CCNA reported a median of 3.5 months (the median is the middle value; the middle half reported 2.8 to 4.0 months). Another 15 reported a median of one week for ITIL Foundation, with the middle half at one to two weeks; not every post says which ITIL version it means.
These are self-reported times from people who chose to post, so read them as a rough guide. The two exams test different things. Cisco's CCNA topic list includes subnetting (splitting an address range into smaller networks) and VLANs (separate virtual networks on one set of switches). It also covers routing with OSPF (a protocol routers use to share paths) and network automation, and Cisco adds that "other related topics may also appear" on the exam. Pearson VUE, the testing company, runs the exam in a proctored setting, meaning a supervisor watches it; you book it online, by phone or at a Pearson VUE test center.
ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, and you need 65% to pass. PeopleCert's own eLearning course for it has 9 hours of interactive content. This page prices Version 5 because in its ITIL FAQ archived on May 16, 2026, PeopleCert planned to retire all ITIL 4 modules on December 31, 2027. The same FAQ says ITIL 4 certifications remain valid prerequisites for the higher Version 5 levels, so an ITIL 4 certificate you already hold still counts toward them.
What do the CCNA and ITIL Foundation cost?
In the US, the CCNA exam costs $300 plus tax and ITIL Foundation $690 as an exam bundle that includes tax. Over three years, the CCNA comes to $600 if you renew by retaking the exam, and ITIL Foundation to $1,089 with PeopleCert Plus membership, PeopleCert's paid plan for logging renewal points. In the table, CE (continuing education) credits for the CCNA and CPD (continuing professional development) points for ITIL are the learning-based renewal routes.
| Item | CCNA | ITIL Foundation (Version 5) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam | $300 x 1 exam, plus tax | $690 x 1 exam bundle, tax included |
| Renewal by year three | Retake the exam: $300; or 30 CE credits: cost of the training not included | $133 x 3 years of PeopleCert Plus membership = $399 |
| Three-year total | $600 (renewal by exam) or $300 plus training (CE route) | $1,089 |
Source: Cisco CCNA exam page (US list price) and Pearson VUE voucher price list; PeopleCert US store, archived copies of the ITIL Foundation (Version 5) and PeopleCert Plus pages. Dates in Sources.
Pearson VUE sells the CCNA exam voucher (a prepaid code that books one exam) for $300 in the US before VAT (value-added tax, a sales tax), and adds any tax at checkout. PeopleCert marks its $690 and $133 prices as including VAT. The $690 bundle includes the official eBook, the exam voucher and a learning resource kit. Neither total includes what earning CE credits or CPD points costs. The two totals also use different renewal routes and tax treatment, so do not read them as a like-for-like price gap.
After a failed CCNA attempt, a retake costs the same as the first try, and Cisco makes you wait five calendar days. The price of an ITIL retake is not on the pages we read.
How do you keep the CCNA and ITIL current?
Both certifications last three years and renew through learning credits or another exam.
| CCNA | ITIL (PeopleCert) | |
|---|---|---|
| Valid for | Three years | Three years from the original certification date |
| Renew with learning credits | 30 CE credits | 60 CPD points, logged at 20 a year for three years through PeopleCert Plus (its paid membership) |
| Renew with an exam | Pass the current CCNA exam or any higher-level Cisco exam | Pass another ITIL exam or retake the same one |
| If it lapses | Cisco gives no extensions; you take the full exam process again | Not covered on the pages we read |
Source: Cisco CCNA certification and recertification pages; PeopleCert ITIL FAQ and PeopleCert Plus page, archived copies.
PeopleCert's FAQ adds that passing any ITIL (Version 5) exam also renews ITIL 4 certificates. Holding the CCNA and ITIL Foundation means two separate three-year cycles with two vendors.
Should you get both the CCNA and ITIL?
Get both only if your work needs both: a network engineer in a company that runs its IT services on ITIL could use the CCNA for the technical work and ITIL Foundation for the process side. That is our reading; the Cisco and PeopleCert pages we read set no order between them.
Job seekers on Reddit raise the pairing too. One poster on r/ITCareerQuestions with no callbacks considered "pausing my CCNA and quickly doing an ITIL or Microsoft cert" to get past resume filters (r/ITCareerQuestions, August 2026). Another, in second-line support with a recent CCNA, liked the idea of adding ITIL Foundation (r/ITCareerQuestions, September 2026) and an AWS certification. These are two opinions, not data.
If you are weighing the CCNA against a security certification instead, our CCNA vs CISSP comparison and CCNA vs Network+ comparison cover those choices.
What we did not check
- Salaries. We found no dated official source that compares pay for CCNA and ITIL holders.
- Pass rates. Neither Cisco nor PeopleCert publishes one on the pages we read.
- A shared job count. No job in our data has both
ccnaanditilcounted, so we cannot say which one a given employer prefers. - Prices outside the US, the cost of an ITIL retake and the cost of renewal training.
- Countries beyond the US, UK and India in our job-ad counts on this page.

Questions people ask
Is ITIL or CCNA better?
Take the CCNA for network-engineer work and ITIL Foundation for help-desk, service-desk or service-management work; neither is better in general, because the two certify different work. The CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is one hands-on networking exam from Cisco; ITIL Foundation is PeopleCert's first exam in ITIL, a framework (a published set of recommended practices) for running IT services. In October 2026, 1,557 of 9,475 US network-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, contained the phrase ccna, and 206 of 2,745 US IT-support ads contained the phrase itil. We counted the two phrases in different jobs, so these figures do not rank one above the other.
Should I get the CCNA or ITIL Foundation first?
Take the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) first if you want network-engineer work; Cisco lists "Prerequisites: None" for it. Take ITIL Foundation first if you work on a help desk or service desk (the team that logs and fixes users' IT problems) and want to move toward service management. PeopleCert calls it "Your entry point into ITIL" on its product page. In October 2026, 489 of 6,233 US system-administrator ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, contained the phrase itil; we did not count ccna in those ads.
How much do the CCNA and ITIL Foundation cost?
In the US, the CCNA exam costs $300 plus tax at Cisco's list price (checked October 3, 2026). ITIL Foundation (Version 5) costs $690 including VAT (value-added tax, a sales tax) as PeopleCert's US exam bundle with the official eBook and the exam voucher, a prepaid code that books the exam (archived store page of October 4, 2026). Over three years, the CCNA comes to $600 if you renew by passing the exam again, or $300 plus the cost of the training behind 30 CE (continuing education) credits. ITIL Foundation with PeopleCert Plus, the membership through which you log renewal points, at $133 a year comes to $1,089. The two totals use different renewal routes and tax treatment, so they are not a like-for-like price gap.
Do the CCNA and ITIL certifications expire?
Yes, both last three years. Cisco renews the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) when you earn 30 CE (continuing education) credits, pass the current CCNA exam again or pass a higher-level Cisco exam, and gives no extensions. PeopleCert renews ITIL certificates with 60 CPD (continuing professional development) points logged at 20 a year through PeopleCert Plus, a pass in another ITIL exam or a retake of the same exam (PeopleCert ITIL FAQ, archived May 16, 2026).
How long does it take to study for the CCNA and ITIL Foundation?
In the Reddit posts we collected, 15 people who said how long they studied for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) reported a median of 3.5 months; the median is the middle value. Another 15 reported a median of one week for ITIL Foundation; not every post says which ITIL version. These are self-reported times from people who chose to post. The CCNA exam lasts 120 minutes; ITIL Foundation (Version 5) has 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes.
