Is CompTIA Security+ worth it?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

1.4% of cybersecurity analyst job ads in the United States name the CompTIA Security+ (112 of 8,110, Adzuna, October 2026)

CompTIA Security+ is worth it as a first security certification: it costs $439 and has no required experience or prerequisite exam. It does not get you a job on its own. In our October 2026 count of US security-analyst ads (Adzuna), CompTIA Security+ appeared in at least 112 of the 8,110 ads, and CompTIA lists it for 20 US Department of Defense (DoD) 8140 work roles.

CompTIA Security+ is a cybersecurity certification from CompTIA, which says it covers the essential skills required for core security functions. You earn it by passing one exam, currently SY0-701. The certification exam has up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple-choice and performance-based tasks, and the certification is valid for three years. How we count ads.

Verdict by situation:

  • No IT or security job yet: Security+ is a reasonable first exam, but plan for a first job in IT support or a similar role. CompTIA recommends two years in a security or systems-administrator job before the exam.
  • Already in IT support or on a help desk: in the hierarchy CompTIA uses for renewals, Security+ sits above A+ and Network+ and below CySA+ and PenTest+, and the IT-support page shows what IT-support ads name now.
  • US defense work or a DoD contractor: take it, then check the work role the position or contract names. CompTIA maps Security+ to 20 DoDM 8140.03 work roles.
  • Several years in security already: look at the CISSP or CySA+ instead.
  • US or Canadian student: check CompTIA's student price before you buy.

Is CompTIA Security+ worth it in 2026? What security-analyst ads show

Yes, as a first security exam, and employers do write it into ads: in our October 2026 count of US security-analyst ads (Adzuna), at least 112 of the 8,110 named CompTIA Security+. The count shows demand in ads, not who gets hired.

Our counts cover one job title per country; for Security+ it is security analyst, searched under the local title. We search for the phrase comptia security, so ads that write only "Security+" are missed and every Security+ count on this page is a minimum.

Our CISSP and CEH pages give the counts for those certificates in the same US security-analyst ads.

The UK and India have their own sections. In Brazil, Security+ appeared in at least 2 of 434 analista de segurança ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). For Mexico we give no Security+ share for October 2026.

In US IT-support ads, Security+ appeared in 1.2% of 2,745 ads (October 2026, Adzuna). Our IT-support page lists the certificates and skills that IT-support ads name in each country.

The count shows how often employers write Security+ into an ad. It cannot show whether a DoD contractor fills Security+ positions through channels other than job boards, or how much weight an employer gives the certificate when the ad does not mention it.

Is CompTIA Security+ worth it in the UK?

Yes, as a first exam, if you budget in dollars. Of the 235 UK security-analyst ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), at least 12 named Security+. Our CISSP page gives the UK count for that certificate.

CompTIA's UK store lists the Security+ voucher at $439, in US dollars rather than pounds.

Is CompTIA Security+ worth it in India?

Yes, as a first exam, because it has no required experience and costs $439, but Indian security-analyst ads name other certificates too, so check what the ads you want ask for. Of the 250 Indian security-analyst ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), at least 8 named Security+. The CEH and CISSP pages give the Indian counts for those certificates.

We found no India store and no rupee price on CompTIA's sites, so we use the US store price, $439, for India; see the cost section. EC-Council lists the CEH exam at $950 or more in US dollars, so if an Indian ad you want names the CEH, check whether the employer pays for it.

Does Security+ cover the SIEM skills that analyst ads name?

Only in part. In our October 2026 count of US security-analyst ads (Adzuna), SIEM (security information and event management) was named in 5.1% and Splunk in 1.2%. Security operations is the largest Security+ domain, at 28% of the SY0-701 exam, but the exam tests concepts and performance-based tasks, not daily work in a SIEM tool. Of the 235 UK security-analyst ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), 25% named SIEM. Of the 250 Indian security-analyst ads in the same October 2026 count (Adzuna), 20% named SIEM. Our security-analyst page gives these skill counts for every country we cover.

Can you get a job with CompTIA Security+ and no experience?

Sometimes, but both the vendor and the US government point to experience or a degree as well. CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years in a security or systems-administrator job before the exam. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says information security analysts typically need a bachelor's degree in a computer science field, and may need experience in a related job.

Our ad count cannot say whether CompTIA Security+ can get you a job with no other background. It shows which ads name Security+, not who was hired. What the facts support is a two-step route. Take a job in IT support, on a help desk or in system administration, where the related experience comes from, and add Security+ there.

One poster on Reddit asked whether they could use their work experience and their certification in job interviews (r/SecurityCareerAdvice). Our answer: yes, describe the work you did and link it to the exam domains, such as security operations.

US defense work is the clearest case where the certificate itself counts. CompTIA lists Security+ as approved under DoDM 8140.03 for 20 work roles, as the DoD 8140 section explains.

Does Security+ meet DoD 8140?

Yes. CompTIA's DoDM 8140.03 mapping, which we read on October 5, 2026, lists Security+ as approved for 20 DoD work roles. The DoD manual 8140.03, released in February 2023, sets the qualification standards for the DoD cyber workforce. CompTIA says that by February 2025, all DoD civilian employees and service members in cybersecurity work roles of the DoD Cyber Workforce Framework (DCWF) had to be qualified under it. CompTIA gives that date for the cybersecurity work roles; it gives none for the other groups in the table.

Area Work roles that list Security+ (DCWF code)
IT (cyberspace) Technical support specialist (411), knowledge manager (431), network operations specialist (441), system administrator (451), systems requirements planner (641), system testing and evaluation specialist (671)
Cybersecurity Cyber defense analyst (511), cyber defense infrastructure support specialist (521), cyber defense incident responder (531), vulnerability assessment analyst (541), security control assessor (612), secure software assessor (622), information systems security manager (722), COMSEC (communications security) manager (723)

Cyberspace enablers Cyber policy and strategy planner (752), program manager (801), IT project manager (802), IT investment/portfolio manager (804), IT program auditor (805)

Source: CompTIA, certification alignment to work role frameworks (DoDM 8140.03), read October 5, 2026. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

Two limits apply. First, the table is CompTIA's list. DoD's own work-role pages on its Cyber Exchange site asked for a DoD login when we tried to read them, so we could not check each role against DoD's tables. Second, CompTIA's mapping does not say which positions or proficiency levels within a work role each approval covers. Ask the hiring office what the exact position requires. CompTIA also says the manual lets DoD workers choose between certification and training options, so a certificate is one way to qualify, not the only one.

Other credentials appear in the same framework. CompTIA lists CySA+ for 10 work roles, including cyber defense analyst (511) and cyber defense incident responder (531). EC-Council says the CEH is DoD 8140 approved and lists six work roles for it. ISC2 says the CISSP is approved under DoDM 8140.03.

Security+ cost for students

CompTIA sells exams at a student price to students at US degree-granting universities that take part in federal student aid (Title IV), US high-school juniors and seniors aged 16 or older, and students at Canadian universities. Students verify their status through SheerID, an outside verification service, after they create a CompTIA account or log in to one. The help page we read on October 5, 2026, gives no discount rate, so we do not state one.

Two rules matter. A verified student can buy two of each exam type every six months at the student price, and no other discount can be added on top. If your school is outside the US and Canada, this route does not apply.

Is CompTIA Security+ hard? Exam format, difficulty and study time

It has no required prerequisite, but it is not an easy exam without IT basics. The SY0-701 exam has up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions, and you need 750 on a scale of 100 to 900. It is offered in English, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai.

The official exam objectives list five domains and their weights:

Domain (SY0-701) Share of the exam
General security concepts 12%
Threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations 22%
Security architecture 18%
Security operations 28%
Security program management and oversight 20%

Source: CompTIA, Security+ (V7) exam objectives summary, read October 5, 2026.

How long it takes depends on what you know already. In the Security+ posts we collected from Reddit, 10 posts or comments gave a study time in weeks: the median was 2.5 weeks, and the middle half reported 2 to 3 weeks. Another 13 gave it in months: the median was 2 months, and the middle half reported 1 to 4 months. These are self-reported and lean toward people who passed and posted about it.

A poster asked how to know when they are ready (r/CompTIA). The exam objectives are the checklist, and CompTIA publishes them for free. The performance-based questions ask you to do a task, not pick a definition, so practice them before the exam.

Which study resources should you use?

Posters on r/CompTIA asked which books, study guides and resources to use, and one asked whether a well-known SY0-701 study guide is still the best choice (1, 2, 3, 4). We have no sourced comparison of third-party books or video courses, so we do not rank them. CompTIA's own products are CertMaster Learn, CertMaster Labs and CertMaster Practice, sold alone or in bundles with the exam voucher.

A Udemy course is in the same position as any third-party course: it can teach the material, but you still buy the exam voucher to get the certification.

Should you wait for SY0-801?

Only if you are just starting to study. A poster asked whether to wait for the new version (r/CompTIA). CompTIA expects Security+ V8 (SY0-801) to launch on or around November 17, 2026, in English, with the same limits of 90 questions, 90 minutes and a passing score of 750. The English SY0-701 exam stays available until June 11, 2027, and the Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai versions until August 13, 2027. If you are already studying SY0-701 materials, take that exam before it retires.

How long is CompTIA Security+ valid? Renewal and CE

CompTIA Security+ is valid for three years from the certification date. To renew it, you earn 50 continuing education units (CEUs) in the three-year cycle and pay the $150 continuing education fee. The other routes are one CertMaster CE course, which CompTIA offers as a single-activity renewal, or earning a higher-level CompTIA certification. CompTIA's hierarchy puts CySA+ and PenTest+ above Security+, and earning one of them renews Security+ without the $150 fee (CompTIA renewal and continuing education pages, checked October 3 and 5, 2026).

One poster asked what to do because their certification would expire before they finished their degree (r/CompTIA). The options are the same as for anyone: earn the 50 CEUs and pay the fee within the cycle, complete a CertMaster CE course, or earn a higher-level CompTIA certification before the cycle ends. If the certificate is mainly for a job search after graduation, taking the exam closer to the end of the degree keeps more of the three years for that search.

Security+ also counts toward the CISSP later. ISC2 lists CompTIA Security+ among the credentials that can replace one of the five years of experience the CISSP requires.

CompTIA Security+ salary: what the figures measure

We have no salary figure for Security+ holders from a source we could verify. What we have is pay for the job title. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for information security analysts at $129,180 (May 2025), about $10,765 a month before tax. That median covers every experience level, so it is not an average Security+ salary for a beginner.

For jobs that need no experience, the figures are lower. EC-Council's salary page quotes about $60,382 a year for an entry-level security analyst (Indeed) and $65,946 for an entry-level SOC analyst (Salary.com). These describe job titles in the US, not what Security+ adds, and they come from a vendor that sells a competing certification.

Salary figures that people post on Reddit are single cases rather than a sample, so we do not average them.

Security+ salary in the UK, India, Canada, Texas and South Africa

We found no verified Security+ salary figure for the UK, India, Canada, Texas or South Africa, so we give none. We found no source we could verify that separates the effect of the certificate from experience and job title. What we can show is demand, in the ad counts by country.

Is CySA+ better than Security+?

For a different stage, yes. CySA+ (CS0-004, launched June 23, 2026) is CompTIA's analyst exam, and CompTIA recommends about four years in a SOC or vulnerability-analyst role first. Both cost $439. Take Security+ first if you are new. Take CySA+ once you work in security operations. In our October 2026 count of US security-analyst ads (Adzuna), CySA+ was named in 119 of 8,110.

The CEH costs $950 to $1,199 and needs two years of security work or official training; our CEH page covers when it makes sense and what US security-analyst ads show for it.

The Google Cybersecurity Certificate, a beginner course on Coursera, appeared in none of the 8,110 US security-analyst ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). Treat it as training rather than a certification: it has no proctored exam, and none of our sources lists it for DoD 8140.

The CISSP is the senior credential: five years of experience, $749 and an endorsement. Security+ can shorten its experience requirement by one year.

Security+ vs Security Pro: which one is the certification?

Security+ is the certification. Security Pro is a CompTIA training course that prepares for Security+ (V7), and it ends with a lab-based competency assessment rather than a certification exam. CompTIA sells both, so check which one a course or bundle includes before you pay.

If you are still choosing a networking exam first, our CCNA vs CompTIA Network+ comparison covers that step and the Network+ page covers the exam itself.

Is CompTIA Security+ worth it? What posters ask on Reddit

Among the 15 most common Security+ question themes in the Reddit posts we collected, six ask which certificate to take before or after Security+, and five ask how to study for it.

We grouped the Security+ questions by theme; most come from r/CompTIA, r/SecurityCareerAdvice and r/ITCareerQuestions. Posters choose to write, so the themes show what Security+ candidates wonder about, not how common each view is.

  • What to add next to Security+. Posters asked which certificate to pair with Security+, the CCNA or something else (r/SecurityCareerAdvice), and whether the CCNA and Security+ are worth getting before a first job (r/SecurityCareerAdvice). Our answer: before a first job, one of them is enough to start. Take Security+ if you aim at security work and the CCNA if you aim at networking. Neither replaces the IT experience CompTIA recommends. The CCNA vs Network+ comparison covers the networking side.
  • Network+ or Security+ first. Posters asked whether to take Network+ first because of the overlap, and whether an information-systems degree lets you skip it (r/CompTIA). CompTIA recommends Network+ before Security+ but does not require it. If your degree covered networking, you can skip Network+ and save one exam fee; the Security+ exam objectives show what you need to know.
  • A+ or Security+ first. One poster asked which to take first (r/SecurityCareerAdvice). A+ is CompTIA's IT-support certification and takes two exams; Security+ is its security certification. For a help-desk job, the IT-support page shows how often IT-support ads name A+.
  • Security+ next to other credentials. One poster weighed Security+ against a TryHackMe certificate and GRC credentials (r/ITCareerQuestions). We have no facts on those credentials, so we do not rank them.
  • Region. One poster in the EU weighed a data-science degree with Security+ against a cybersecurity specialization (r/cscareerquestionsEU). Our October 2026 count gives no Security+ figure for an EU country, so we cannot answer the EU part. CompTIA's Europe store lists the exam at €323.

How to get CompTIA Security+, step by step

  1. Check the official SY0-701 exam objectives on CompTIA's site and compare them with what you know.
  2. Study with the materials you choose; CompTIA's own are CertMaster Learn, Labs and Practice.
  3. Buy the voucher: $439 on the US store, $579 with Retake Assurance, €323 on the Europe store. Students in the US and Canada can verify with SheerID for the student price.
  4. Book and take the 90-minute exam; you need at least 750 on the 100 to 900 scale.
  5. Renew within three years: 50 CEUs plus the $150 fee, one CertMaster CE course or a higher-level CompTIA certification such as CySA+.

Questions people ask

Is CompTIA Security+ enough to get a job?

On its own, usually not. CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years in a security or systems-administrator job before the Security+ exam, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics says information security analysts typically need a bachelor's degree in a computer science field. Of the 8,110 US security-analyst ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), at least 112 named CompTIA Security+. Treat the certificate as one part of an application, next to IT-support experience, a degree or lab work you can show.

Is it worth doing CompTIA Security+?

For a first security credential, yes, in most cases. The CompTIA Security+ exam costs $439 on CompTIA's US store, has no required prerequisite and is valid for three years. CompTIA lists it as approved for 20 US Department of Defense 8140 work roles. In our October 2026 count of US security-analyst ads (Adzuna), at least 112 of 8,110 named it. If you already have about five years of security work, look at the CISSP instead.

Can you make $500,000 a year in cybersecurity?

None of the pay figures in our sources reaches $500,000 a year. The closest are for chief information security officers: $347,395 to $429,727 a year in the US, a Salary.com range that EC-Council quotes on its salary page. For information security analysts, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a median of $129,180 a year (May 2025). No certificate leads to an executive role on its own.

How long is CompTIA Security+ valid?

CompTIA Security+ is valid for three years from the certification date. To renew it, you earn 50 continuing education units (CEUs) within that three-year cycle and pay CompTIA's $150 continuing education fee. Other routes CompTIA lists are one CertMaster CE course or earning a higher-level CompTIA certification such as CySA+ (CompTIA renewal and continuing education pages, checked October 3 and 5, 2026).

Is a Udemy course for CompTIA Security+ worth it?

A Udemy course is training, not the certification. Whatever course you use, you still buy the CompTIA Security+ exam voucher ($439 on CompTIA's US store, October 2026) and pass the SY0-701 exam, or SY0-801 after it launches on or around November 17, 2026. We have no sourced data on any Udemy course, so we do not rate Udemy courses. Check that a course follows the official SY0-701 exam objectives, which CompTIA publishes for free.

Does Security+ meet DoD 8140 requirements?

Yes, for many roles. CompTIA's DoDM 8140.03 mapping, read on October 5, 2026, lists Security+ as approved for 20 US Department of Defense work roles, including cyber defense analyst (511), cyber defense incident responder (531) and system administrator (451). CompTIA says the manual lets DoD workers choose between certification and training options. CompTIA's list does not say which positions or levels each approval covers, so check the requirement for the exact position.

How much does the Security+ exam cost in India?

We found no India store and no rupee price on CompTIA's sites, so we use the US store price: $439 for one CompTIA Security+ voucher (read October 3, 2026), or $579 with Retake Assurance. Check the price CompTIA shows you at checkout before you pay. In our October 2026 count of Indian security-analyst ads (Adzuna), Security+ appeared in at least 8 of the 250 ads.
