Is AI-901 worth it?
0 of 7,726 cloud engineer job ads in the United States name the AI-901 (Adzuna, October 2026)
Exam AI-901: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals is worth taking if you know Python, a programming language, and want a first AI (artificial intelligence) certification on Azure, Microsoft's cloud service. Microsoft asks for "knowledge of Python coding syntax and programming techniques" (syntax is the rules for writing code). It costs $99 in the US.
Before you book, read Microsoft's AI-901 study guide (its list of the skills the exam measures) and try the practice assessment linked from the AI-901 exam page, a set of sample questions in the exam's style. If you cannot follow Python yet, learn the basics first (see the check in your situation). In our October 2026 count of Adzuna, a job-ad search site, the exam code ai-901 appeared in one of the 23,274 US ads for AI engineers, people who build software on AI models (see the jobs section). Is AI-901 worth it for your situation?
It is worth it if you want a first proof that you know Microsoft's AI tools and you have the Python knowledge Microsoft asks for. Your starting point changes the advice:
- Student or career changer with no target job yet: read the study guide and try the practice assessment first (you sign in to AI Skills Navigator, a Microsoft learning site, to launch it). Then check your Python: if you can follow a short Python script that uses ready-made code and prints the result, the coding side is within reach. If not, learn the basics before you pay (we did not check Python courses), then take Microsoft's AI-901T00-A course on Microsoft Learn. When both feel within reach, book the exam for a fixed date to give yourself a deadline.
- Non-technical worker on a team that uses Azure: the smaller domain (AI concepts and responsible AI, the rules for using AI fairly and safely) fits your work. The larger domain covers building small apps with the Foundry SDK (code libraries for Microsoft's AI platform), and Microsoft expects Python knowledge, so plan to learn some code. Microsoft's one-day course, AI-901T00-A (Introduction to AI in Azure), is labeled Beginner.
- Software developer who already writes Python: look at the outline before you pay. If it holds nothing new for you, compare it with AI-103, Microsoft's Intermediate-level exam for building AI apps and agents. Agents are AI programs that carry out tasks in steps on their own (details in where it leads next).
- Someone aiming at AI-engineer or cloud-engineer jobs (cloud engineers run systems on cloud services): treat it as a first milestone. Our AI-engineer role page and cloud-engineer role page list the skills and certifications those job ads name.
What does the AI-901 exam cover?
Two domains (topic areas): identifying AI concepts and capabilities (40–45%) and building AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry (55–60%). Passing AI-901 earns Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals, and it is the only exam required. Microsoft labels AI-103, an Associate certification, Intermediate.
Microsoft's exam page describes the candidate in these words: "As a candidate for this Microsoft Certification, you're at the beginning of your career in AI solution development."
The shares below come from the study guide's skills list dated April 15, 2026; the guide itself was last updated July 13, 2026.

| Item | |
|---|---|
| Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry | 55–60% |
| Identify AI concepts and capabilities | 40–45% |
The first domain, Identify AI concepts and capabilities, covers:
- Responsible AI: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability.
- AI model components and settings: the parts of an AI model (the trained program that answers requests) and the settings you can change.
- AI workloads, meaning kinds of AI task. Microsoft names generative AI (writes text or creates images) and agentic AI (agents, as above). It also names text analysis (finding meaning in text), speech (turning speech into text and back), computer vision (software that reads images) and information extraction (pulling details such as names or totals out of documents).
The second domain, Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry, is about building. Microsoft describes Foundry as a platform that "unifies agents, models, and tools under a single management grouping." In plain words, it is one place in Azure to choose AI models, build agents and manage them. The domain has four blocks:
- Generative AI apps and agents. One task reads "Create a lightweight chat client application by using the Foundry SDK": a small app that sends messages to an AI model and shows its replies. An SDK (software development kit) is a set of code libraries for a service. Another is to build a single agent in the Foundry portal, the website where you manage Foundry.
- Text and speech: a small app that includes text analysis.
- Computer vision and image generation: a small app with vision features.
- Information extraction with Content Understanding, Microsoft's Foundry tool for pulling information out of documents and other content.
Microsoft adds that the bullets under each skill are examples of what it tests and that related topics may appear on the exam.
How much Python does AI-901 need?
Some, and Microsoft puts it plainly. The study guide says you need "knowledge of Python coding syntax and programming techniques" and should be familiar with Azure resources (the services you set up in Azure). It also expects you to know REST APIs (a standard way for programs to request data from a web service), SDKs and CLIs (command-line interfaces, tools you control by typing commands).
The guide calls the apps "lightweight" and names no language other than Python. The course page is less strict: it calls some Python knowledge "useful." Plan by the study guide, which describes the exam.
A poster who said they were not good at Python asked how much Python they would have to learn and how much Foundry coding the exam would involve. Use the Python check in your situation to judge where you stand, then practice the four Foundry tasks listed above.
Can AI-901 help you get a job?
Possibly, but job ads cannot show whether the exam caused a hire; the counts only show how often the exam code appears. In October 2026, we searched Adzuna, a job-ad search site, for ads that contain both the job title and the exam code ai-901 (the same English code in every country). We count this certification for two jobs: AI engineers and cloud engineers.
| Country | AI-engineer ads naming ai-901 |
Cloud-engineer ads naming ai-901 |
|---|---|---|
| US | one of the 23,274 | none of the 7,726 |
| UK | 12 of the 1,146 | none of the 475 |
| India | not counted | none of the 1,150 |
| France | not counted | none of the 340 |
| Poland | not counted | none of the 332 |
Source: Adzuna, October 2026; analysis: CertWorthIt. Not counted means we did not search that combination.
Ads that name the certification only as Azure AI Fundamentals, without the code, are not counted, so each figure is a minimum. Treat AI-901 as proof that you learned the basics, not as a job requirement. For what these ads do name, see the AI-engineer role page and the cloud-engineer role page.
How much does AI-901 cost?
The retake table uses the US price from Microsoft's AI-901 exam page. The price depends on the country or region where the exam is proctored (supervised while you take it), so check yours on that page. The pricing note on Microsoft's older AI-900 exam page says prices do not include applicable taxes and can change without notice. You schedule the exam through Pearson VUE, the testing company linked from Microsoft's exam page.
A retake (another attempt after you fail) is paid again. Microsoft's general retake policy sets a 24-hour wait after you first fail and 14 days before each later attempt, and you can take the exam no more than five times in 12 months from your first attempt.
| Scenario | How the cost is built | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Pass on the first try | $99 × 1 attempt | $99 |
| Pass on the second try | $99 × 2 attempts | $198 |
| Pass on the third try | $99 × 3 attempts | $297 |
| Keep the certification | No renewal: Fundamentals certifications do not expire | No added cost |

A voucher is a prepaid code that covers some or all of an exam fee. Microsoft's AI-901 exam page and study guide offer no voucher. The exam-policies page lists voucher terms for named events, such as Microsoft Build 2026 (a Microsoft developer event); none of the events we saw there lists AI-901. One poster asked how to get an AI-901 voucher; the Microsoft pages we read give no route.

How hard is AI-901?
Microsoft's course label is Beginner, but the study guide asks for Python knowledge. The AI-901 exam page lists a passing score of 700 on Microsoft's scoring scale.
The exam is offered in 13 languages, including English. If it isn't available in your preferred language, the study guide says you can request an additional 30 minutes. Microsoft's accommodations page, for requests to change how you take the exam, also lists extra time for conditions such as learning disabilities or test anxiety.
Two Microsoft tools let you preview the exam. The exam sandbox, linked from the AI-901 exam page, is Microsoft's demo of the exam experience. The practice assessment sits on AI Skills Navigator.
Questions posters asked on Reddit
A software developer wrote that AI-901 seemed easy to them and asked whether to go for it. If you already build apps in Python, the exam may add little for you; read the AI-103 section in where it leads next before you decide.
A poster asked what people would do differently before a retake. The study guide puts 55–60% of the exam on building with Foundry, so hands-on practice in Foundry is where a retake plan should start; the waits in the cost section give you time for it.
Posters in two threads asked which Udemy course (Udemy is an online course marketplace), YouTube channel or practice tests helped people pass. Another asked for anyone's experience with the new exam. Start with Microsoft's own material; check any paid course against the study guide's skills list.
How to prepare with Microsoft's own material
- Read the AI-901 study guide on Microsoft Learn, Microsoft's training site, including the full list of skills measured.
- Take Microsoft's one-day course, AI-901T00-A.
- Try the practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator, then Microsoft's exam sandbox, a demo of the exam experience.
- Practice the guide's four Foundry tasks in Foundry itself, on Azure: a chat app, a single agent, a text or vision app, and information extraction. Microsoft's Foundry overview explains the platform.
Does AI-901 expire?
No: Microsoft's renewal page says "Fundamentals certifications do not expire," so there is no renewal exam or fee for Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals. The AI-901 exam page lists no retirement date for the exam itself.
Higher-level Microsoft certifications (associate, expert and specialty) work differently: the AI-901 study guide notes that they expire every year and are renewed by passing a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

What happened to AI-900?
Microsoft replaced it. The AI-900 exam page reads: "The AI-900 exam was retired on June 30, 2026, and has been replaced by AI-901. To earn this certification, candidates must now pass AI-901." The certification keeps its name, Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals; the exam behind it changed.
The content changed too. AI-900's last published outline, on its exam page, had five topic areas: AI workloads (15–20%), machine learning principles (15–20%), computer vision (15–20%), natural language processing (15–20%) and generative AI (20–25%). Machine learning is how software learns patterns from data; natural language processing is software that works with human language. AI-901 puts its larger domain on building with Foundry. Study material, courses and practice tests written for AI-900 may not match the new exam, so check the exam code before you buy anything.
Our AI-900 page covers the retired exam, and the AI-900 vs AI-901 comparison sets the two outlines side by side.
Where does AI-901 lead next?
For building AI apps on Azure, the next Microsoft step is AI-103. It earns Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate, which Microsoft labels Intermediate. Its page says the certification "validates your expertise in designing, developing, and deploying advanced Azure AI solutions using Python and Microsoft Foundry," and that you should have experience developing apps by using Python.
The older engineer exam, AI-102 (Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate), is retired: Microsoft's page says the certification and its renewal assessment are retired, so any next-step list naming AI-102 is out of date.
AI-901 vs AWS AI Practitioner
AWS AI Practitioner is the closest match from AWS (Amazon Web Services). It costs $100, does not test coding and stays valid for three years; AI-901 expects Python and needs no renewal. Choose by the cloud your target employers use. For machine learning on AWS, see our page on the AWS Machine Learning Engineer certification; for courses outside the cloud vendors, see DeepLearning.AI, an AI course provider. Our AI certifications field page lists every AI certificate we track.
AI-901 salary: what we can and cannot tell you
Pay for AI-901 holders follows the job title, the country and experience, not the exam. See AI-engineer pay and demand and cloud-engineer pay and demand.
What we did not check
- Number of questions and exam length: Microsoft's AI-901 exam page and study guide state neither.
- Hands-on portion: the pages do not say whether the exam includes live lab tasks (hands-on work in a real Azure environment).
- Online or test center: we found no Microsoft wording for AI-901 on taking it online versus at a test center.
- Practice assessment price: the AI-901 page does not say it is free (Microsoft's AI-900 page called its own practice assessment free).
- Amount of code: Microsoft's study guide gives none.
- Cost of hands-on practice in Azure: we did not check what account or cost practicing the Foundry tasks needs.
- Difficulty against AI-900: we have no pass rates for either exam.
- Third-party courses and practice tests: we do not rate them.
- Vouchers from employers, schools or other sellers: we did not look for them. We also did not check whether Exam Replay, an offer Microsoft advertises, covers AI-901.
- Prices outside the US: we read the US price only.
- Prerequisites for AI-103: its page states the Python experience above, and we found no required earlier exam; we did not check AI-102's old prerequisite wording.
- Pay: we found no source that measures pay for AI-901 holders.
- Study time: the Reddit posts we collected hold too few reports of study time to give a figure.
