Is AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

42 of 7,726 cloud engineer job ads in the United States name the AWS Cloud Practitioner (Adzuna, October 2026)

AWS Cloud Practitioner is worth it as a learning step and rarely as a hiring signal. The exam (CLF-C02) costs $100, takes 90 minutes and stays valid for three years, according to the AWS exam page we read on October 5, 2026. In our October 2026 count (Adzuna), employers seldom name it: the full name aws certified cloud practitioner appears in 42 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads. The broader phrase aws certified, which covers any AWS certification, appears in 297 of the same ads. How we count ads.

It is a cheap, structured way to learn AWS vocabulary before an Associate exam, and AWS itself writes that it is designed for people new to the cloud who may not have an IT background.

Verdict by situation:

  • You work near cloud teams in sales, marketing, product or project management: take it.
  • You want a first cloud-engineer job and have no IT background: take it as a first milestone, then book an Associate exam.
  • You already run servers, write code or hold another cloud certification: skip it.
  • Your target employers run Microsoft Azure: read the Azure comparison first.

What CLF-C02 tests and what it leaves out

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is AWS's Foundational-level certification. AWS groups its exams into Foundational, Associate and Professional levels, plus a separate Specialty track. The current exam version is CLF-C02. Its exam guide splits the scored questions into four domains: cloud technology and services (34%), security and compliance (30%), cloud concepts (24%), and billing, pricing and support (12%).

CLF-C02 exam: share of scored content by domain
Cloud technology and services (34%) and security and compliance (30%) make up 64% of the scored content; billing, pricing and support is the smallest domain at 12%.

In practice, you are asked to explain the value of the AWS Cloud and the shared responsibility model, describe core services for compute, networking, databases and storage, and understand how AWS charges for them. The guide also names the Well-Architected Framework and security best practices.

The more telling part of the guide is the list of job tasks AWS says are out of scope: coding, designing cloud architecture, troubleshooting, implementation, and load and performance testing. Those are the tasks a cloud engineer is paid for. The exam checks that you can talk about AWS; it does not check that you can build on it. AWS describes the target candidate as someone with up to six months of exposure to AWS who "might be in the early stages of pursuing an AWS Cloud career" or works with people in AWS roles.

There is no prerequisite. The exam is offered in 12 languages; AWS will retire the Italian and German versions after December 31, 2026.

Can you get a job with the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification?

Not on its own, judging by the ads. Cloud engineer is the only role we count it against, and those ads seldom name it, so what gets you hired is what you bring with it.

We count the exact phrase aws certified cloud practitioner in cloud-engineer ads in every country we track; other forms such as AWS Cloud Practitioner or CLF-C02 on their own are not counted (details in the next section).

The umbrella phrase aws certified also appears in 148 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads (DevOps engineer is the other role in which we count AWS certification). The tools that cloud-engineer ads name, such as Terraform and Kubernetes, are in the path section. Most of what those ads name is tools and hands-on work, not certificates.

A Reddit poster asked whether Cloud Practitioner plus Solutions Architect – Associate would be enough to land a first cloud job, and the same question appeared in a career forum that day. Our data cannot promise an outcome. It does show where the weight sits. Of the two exams, only the Associate one tests design work, and the tools named in cloud-engineer ads are things you show you can use in projects. Our reading: treat the two certifications as proof that you studied, and a public repository with your own Terraform code as proof that you can do the work.

What our ad count can and cannot show

The count has limits. It matches exact phrases, so the true numbers are probably higher. An ad that writes AWS Cloud Practitioner or CLF-C02 without the words aws certified does not count for this exam, and an ad that only says aws certification preferred does not count toward the umbrella phrase. For this exam, our count covers cloud-engineer ads only. It does not show demand in marketing, product or project-management roles, where AWS's own stated audience sits, and it cannot tell how a recruiter reacts when a career changer lists the certificate without being asked. The role page breaks down, by country, which certifications and skills cloud-engineer ads name.

What CLF-C02 costs in 2026

The exam fee is $100 in the US. AWS publishes the price in other currencies too: on its price table a Foundational exam costs €85 in euro markets, and the same table lists prices in Indian rupees, Australian dollars, yen, won and yuan. Readers in India can take the rupee price straight from that table. AWS updates exam prices at least once a year, in May, so check the AWS price table before you book.

A failed attempt costs the full fee again. AWS makes you wait 14 calendar days before a retake and sets no limit on attempts, so two attempts cost $200.

Passing has one financial upside: AWS gives holders a 50% discount on other AWS certification exams. An Associate exam costs $150, so with the discount it costs $75. The full two-step route (Cloud Practitioner, then an Associate) costs $175 in exam fees if you pass both on the first try, against $150 for going straight to the Associate exam. The Foundational exam adds $25 to the bill in exchange for a softer start. The AWS pages we read do not say how long the discount stays valid, so check your AWS Certification account after you pass. Our overview of AWS certifications lists every level and how vouchers work.

Two posts in our collection asked where to get a CLF-C02 voucher or how to schedule the exam. On the AWS pages we read, there is no free voucher for CLF-C02; the 50% discount is the one AWS describes, and it comes after you pass.

How long it stays valid and how to recertify

The certification is valid for three years. Before it expires, AWS offers three ways to recertify:

  1. Complete AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner, a free, game-based learning course.
  2. Pass the latest version of the Cloud Practitioner exam.
  3. Pass an Associate-level or Professional-level AWS exam.

The third route is the one most worth planning for. If you pass an Associate exam within three years, your Cloud Practitioner credential renews with it, so the Foundational badge needs no separate upkeep. For non-technical holders who stay at the Foundational level, Cloud Quest is the route that does not require booking another proctored exam.

How long to pass AWS Cloud Practitioner and how hard it is

The exam itself takes 90 minutes. We cannot measure how long you need to prepare. Only 11 of the Reddit posts and comments we collected say how long the poster studied, and they use different units (hours, days, weeks, months). That is too few to give a reliable figure. For a rough comparison, posters who reported their study time for the Associate-level Solutions Architect exam gave a median of two months (15 posters; the middle half took between about five weeks and three months). That exam assumes design experience this one does not. AWS's own benchmark for Cloud Practitioner is up to six months of exposure to AWS, which is not required.

The exam has 65 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions. Only 50 of them count; the other 15 are unscored test questions that AWS does not identify. Scores run from 100 to 1,000 and the passing score is 700. You pass on your total score, so a weak domain can be balanced by a strong one. There is no penalty for guessing: a blank answer counts as wrong, so answer every question.

One poster asked which foundational concept confused people most when they started. We have no measured answer to that. The weights show where the points are: security and compliance carries 30% of the scored content, and billing, pricing and support carries 12%.

How to prepare

Two posts asked how a beginner should start preparing for CLF-C02. A plan built on AWS's own material:

  1. Read the CLF-C02 exam guide, including its lists of in-scope and out-of-scope services. It tells you what not to study.
  2. Take AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, the course AWS lists as a resource for preparing for this exam. It is on AWS Skill Builder, Coursera and edX; in a 2020 post, AWS described the digital version as a free, six-hour course.
  3. If you can use an AWS account, set up a billing alert or budget first, then open the console and find the services you read about. The alert protects you from a surprise bill, and billing is part of the exam.
  4. Use practice questions to find weak domains, then reread those parts of the guide.

A post with 82 upvotes asked whether one video course plus practice questions is enough. For this exam, that combination can work, provided the course follows the four domains in the exam guide. Two other posts asked how good one provider's courses and learning path are. We do not rate third-party courses; the exam guide is the yardstick to check any course against.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs Associate: an honest path

AWS's exam page lists Solutions Architect – Associate, Developer – Associate and SysOps Administrator – Associate (since renamed CloudOps Engineer – Associate) as the certifications other holders earn next. Posters ask about this too (which cert next?), and the answer depends on the job you want.

An honest sequence for someone aiming at a cloud-engineer job:

  1. Decide whether you need the Foundational step. If cloud terms such as regions, the shared responsibility model and pay-as-you-go pricing are new to you, Cloud Practitioner gives you a deadline and a structure for $100. If you already use AWS at work, skip it.
  2. Take Solutions Architect – Associate next if you want general cloud-engineer jobs; it tests the design work the Foundational exam leaves out. Our Solutions Architect page covers it, and the Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect comparison sets the two side by side.
  3. Pick Developer – Associate instead if you write code. Timing matters: the current version (DVA-C02) can be taken until November 30, 2026, and registration for DVA-C03 opens October 27, 2026. If you cannot take the exam by November 30, study for DVA-C03 and check its exam guide before you buy course material, because older courses target DVA-C02. See the Developer – Associate page and the Cloud Practitioner vs Developer comparison.
  4. Pick the operations exam if you run systems. The exam code is now SOA-C03; our SysOps / CloudOps page has the details.
  5. Build something in parallel. For each Associate exam, AWS suggests about a year of hands-on work, and studying for the exam does not replace it.

One poster asked whether to learn Solutions Architect, Python, or Docker and Kubernetes after Cloud Practitioner. The cloud-engineer ads give a partial answer. In October 2026, Terraform is named in 20% of the ads for US cloud engineers, and Kubernetes in 15%. In UK cloud-engineer ads the two figures are 22% and 13%. An Associate certification plus one infrastructure-as-code project is a sound start on what those ads ask for; add containers once that is done. Our overview of all AWS certifications lists every level, including Professional and Specialty exams at $300 each, and the cloud and DevOps field lists the tool-focused certifications as well.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs AZ-900 and AZ-104

AZ-900 (Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals) is Microsoft's counterpart to Cloud Practitioner: a fundamentals exam for the cloud basics on Azure. AZ-104 (Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate) sits at the level of the AWS Associate exams and tests administration work.

Our count tracks AZ-104 in cloud-engineer ads but not AZ-900, so the data comparison works only for AZ-104. In October 2026, AZ-104 appears in 105 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads; Cloud Practitioner appears in 42 of them. In UK cloud-engineer ads the two counts are 15 for AZ-104 and 3 for Cloud Practitioner, out of 475. In India they are 17 and 3, out of 1,150. Keep the levels in mind: AZ-104 is an Associate-level exam, so it compares with an AWS Associate exam, not with this one.

How to choose:

  • AWS Cloud Practitioner or AZ-900: pick the cloud your employer or target employers use. Both are entry points, and neither is a hiring signal by itself. Our Cloud Practitioner vs AZ-900 comparison and the AZ-900 page cover the Microsoft exam in detail. We do not list Microsoft's exam fees on this page; Microsoft's own exam page shows the price in your country.
  • Cloud Practitioner or AZ-104: they are not at the same level. If you are choosing between clouds for an administrator job, compare AZ-104 with the AWS CloudOps exam; the AZ-104 page has the Microsoft side.
  • Google Cloud instead: Google's entry-level counterpart is the Cloud Digital Leader; see the Cloud Digital Leader page and the Cloud Practitioner vs Cloud Digital Leader comparison.

All of these sit in our cloud and DevOps field, with the other cloud certifications we track.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs Technical Essentials

AWS Technical Essentials is a course, not a certification. AWS described it in 2021 as a one-day classroom course with a free self-paced version of about four hours, covering compute, databases, storage, networking, monitoring and security; check AWS Skill Builder for the current format. Cloud Practitioner is a proctored exam that gives you a credential valid for three years. The course on its own gives you the knowledge but nothing to list under certifications. Our reading: AWS aims the course at people in tech roles, so it fits better as a bridge toward the Associate exams than as preparation for this one.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs AI Practitioner

Both are Foundational AWS exams with the same price ($100), length (65 questions, 90 minutes) and validity (three years). AI Practitioner tests foundational knowledge of AI, machine learning and generative AI on AWS; Cloud Practitioner tests the cloud basics. If you want a broad start, Cloud Practitioner covers the services every AWS team uses. If your work is about AI products, AI Practitioner fits better. AI Practitioner is not in our job-ad count, so we give no ad figure for it. The AI Practitioner vs Cloud Practitioner comparison goes further.

AWS Cloud Practitioner salary: what we can and cannot tell you

There is no reliable AWS Cloud Practitioner salary: pay follows the job title, the country and your experience, not this certificate. People who hold it work in very different jobs, from marketing to engineering, so a single pay figure for holders mixes those jobs. We found no source that measures what this exam adds to pay, and we do not publish a figure we cannot source.

Employers pay for the job. The two roles in which we count AWS certification, cloud engineer and DevOps engineer, both involve the hands-on work the Foundational exam leaves out. Our cloud-engineer pay and demand page covers the role most closely tied to AWS skills.

Entry-level salary: no figure exists for Cloud Practitioner holders either. Look up entry-level pay for the job title you are applying for, in your city; the certificate is one line on your resume.

Salary in India, the UK, the Philippines and South Africa

We count job ads in the UK and India, but not salaries for this certificate, and our Azure comparison shows how rarely UK and Indian cloud-engineer ads name it. The Philippines and South Africa are outside the ten countries we track, so we have no ad data for them. In each of these countries, the approach is the same. Look up pay for the role you want, such as cloud engineer or your current non-technical role, and treat Cloud Practitioner as preparation for that role rather than as a pay grade.

Is AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it? What Reddit posters ask

We list eight of the most common question groups in the Reddit posts we collected about this exam. Each is addressed on this page:

  • How to start preparing, whether one video course plus practice questions is enough, and how good a provider's learning path is: how to prepare
  • What to take next: the path to Associate
  • Whether it leads to a first cloud job: jobs
  • Where to get a voucher and how to schedule the exam: cost
  • Which concept confuses beginners most: difficulty

The questions about what to take next and whether it leads to a job both ask where the exam gets you. The ad data gives the same answer as the exam guide: Cloud Practitioner is a start, and cloud-engineer jobs ask for what comes after it.

Is AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner worth it for your situation?

  • Non-technical worker on an AWS team (sales, marketing, product, project management): yes. This is the audience AWS names. You learn the vocabulary your engineers use, and recertifying through Cloud Quest keeps it current without another exam.
  • Career changer aiming at cloud engineering, with no IT background: yes, as a first milestone. A realistic order: pass Cloud Practitioner, and learn basic Linux and networking (IP addressing, DNS, SSH) alongside it. Then work toward Solutions Architect – Associate with the 50% discount, and give it the months it takes; AWS suggests about a year of hands-on design work for that exam. Meanwhile, put one small project in a public repository, such as a simple website deployed on AWS with Terraform. The exam shows you studied; the repository shows you can build. If you already know basic networking and Linux, start with the Associate exam.
  • IT worker (support, system administration, development): usually skip it. Your experience covers most of the Foundational content, and an Associate exam renews any Cloud Practitioner credential anyway.
  • Student: a low-cost way to test interest in cloud work. Pair it with a small project you can show; the exam alone will not make you stand out to employers hiring cloud engineers.

How to get the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification

  1. Read the exam guide and decide whether you need this step (see the path above).
  2. Create an account on AWS's certification site and schedule CLF-C02 with Pearson VUE, at a test center or online with a remote proctor.
  3. Pay $100 (€85 in euro markets; India has its own rupee price on the AWS table), or less if you hold a 50% discount from a previous AWS exam.
  4. Take the exam: 65 questions, 90 minutes, passing score 700.
  5. Note the expiration date, three years out. Plan to recertify through Cloud Quest, a new exam pass or an Associate exam.

Questions people ask

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification worth it for a career changer?

If you have no IT background, it is a sensible first milestone: $100, a clear syllabus and a 50% discount on another AWS exam once you pass. On its own, it does little to get you hired. In October 2026, the exact name appeared in 42 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads (Adzuna). Plan the next step before you book: an Associate exam, which takes months to prepare for, and one small project you can show.

Does AWS Cloud Practitioner get you a job?

Rarely by itself. Coding, architecture design, troubleshooting and implementation are out of scope for the exam, and cloud-engineer jobs pay for exactly those tasks. Outside the US, our October 2026 count found the name in 3 of the 475 UK cloud-engineer ads and 3 of the 1,150 cloud-engineer ads in India. It helps in a non-technical role on an AWS team, such as sales or project management, where it shows you know the vocabulary.

What is the AWS Cloud Practitioner salary per month?

No monthly or yearly figure is reliable, because the certificate is not a job. Holders range from account managers to engineers, and we found no source that isolates what the exam adds to pay. Price it through the role instead: find the monthly pay for the job title you want in your city, then ask whether the exam moves you closer to that job. For cloud work, our cloud-engineer role page is the place to start.

Is it worth doing AWS Cloud Practitioner?

Yes if you work near AWS teams in a non-technical job or are new to IT; usually not if you already work in IT. Most of its content (cloud concepts, security basics, core services and billing) is familiar to IT staff. The money also favors skipping it: one Associate exam costs $150, against $175 for both steps, and once you hold an Associate certification, a Cloud Practitioner badge adds little, since the Associate pass renews it anyway. The exception is an employer that pays and wants a quick first AWS badge from you; then your only cost is the study time.

Are AWS skills still in demand?

In October 2026, the phrase aws certified appeared in 297 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads and 148 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads (Adzuna). That is one month of data, not a trend; we will compare months once we have several. Many ads name tools rather than certifications: Terraform, a tool used with AWS and other clouds, appeared in 20% of the ads for US cloud engineers. See cloud-engineer demand by country for the other markets.

Can you learn AWS in one week?

Not well enough to work with it: for each Associate exam, AWS suggests about a year of hands-on experience. For the Foundational exam, a week gives you a first look at the vocabulary, but we have too few study-time reports to say whether it is enough to pass. As a point of comparison, posters who reported their Solutions Architect – Associate preparation gave a median of two months (15 posters).

Does the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification expire?

Yes, three years after you earn it. Three things renew it: the free Cloud Quest recertification game, a pass on the current Cloud Practitioner exam, or any Associate or Professional AWS exam passed before the deadline. If you are heading toward technical cloud work, the third option costs nothing extra, because your next exam does the renewing.

Can you take the CLF-C02 exam online?

Yes. Pearson VUE delivers it both ways: at a test center or at home with a remote proctor watching. Book a time when you can sit undisturbed for 90 minutes.
