Is AWS SysOps (now CloudOps Engineer – Associate) worth it?
28 of 7,726 cloud engineer job ads in the United States name the AWS SysOps / CloudOps Associate (Adzuna, October 2026)
Our answer to "is AWS SysOps worth it": yes, if you run IT systems and want to run them on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The exam, now called CloudOps Engineer – Associate, costs $150. In October 2026, the old-name phrase aws certified sysops appeared in 35 of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads on Adzuna.
Ad mentions are only one signal; the case for this exam rests on whether the operations skills it tests match the job you want. If you have no IT operations job or no AWS work experience yet, start with Solutions Architect – Associate or Cloud Practitioner instead (see below). Adzuna is a job-ad search site.
AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (exam code SOA-C03) is AWS's certification for people who deploy, monitor, fix and secure systems that already run on AWS; CloudOps is short for cloud operations. It sits at the Associate level, AWS's middle level (the three main levels are Foundational, Associate and Professional). It replaced AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate in 2025. Our job-ad count uses the old name, so it misses ads that use only the new one: read every count of the phrase aws certified sysops as "at least." How we count ads.

Is AWS SysOps Administrator worth it for your situation?
It is worth it if your job is keeping systems running and those systems are on AWS, or are about to move there. AWS's certification page recommends "~1 year of experience deploying, managing, and operating workloads on AWS" (workloads are the applications and systems an organization runs). The exam guide adds at least a year in a related operations role such as system administrator (AWS does not say whether the two overlap). AWS sets no formal prerequisite, so you can book the exam without any other certification.
- System administrator or IT-operations worker with a year of AWS work behind you: take it. It is the AWS exam whose title matches your job.
- Operations worker who has not yet used AWS at work: take it later. Get hands-on AWS time first, because the guide assumes it. Work through the five domains in the exam guide and tick the tasks you have done at work or in a practice AWS account; the unticked ones are your gaps.
- You design systems, or you have no operations job yet: start with Solutions Architect – Associate, AWS's design exam at the same level. In our reading, it is the Associate exam that does not lean on an operations job.
- No IT work experience at all: start with Cloud Practitioner, AWS's Foundational exam for people new to the cloud.
- Your target employers run Microsoft Azure: read our AZ-104 page (Microsoft's Azure administrator exam) and our Azure certifications overview instead.
First step, even with no target job yet: open the free SOA-C03 exam guide and read the tasks under Domain 1 (monitoring, logging and fixing problems), the first of its five topic areas. If you have not done that kind of work on any system, Linux or Windows servers included, build that experience before you pay $150.
What happened to the SysOps Administrator exam?
AWS retired the SysOps Administrator – Associate exam (SOA-C02) after its last day, September 29, 2025, and started the CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam (SOA-C03) on September 30, 2025. The exam code kept its SOA prefix, and the exam fee is $150, the Associate price.
AWS's CloudOps page says the new name applies to those who pass the latest exam version (SOA-C03). The recertification page lists SysOps Administrator – Associate and CloudOps Engineer – Associate in one row with the same renewal routes. It does not say what your badge is called after renewal, so check your AWS Certification account.
AWS's comparison page for the two versions shows what changed. SOA-C02 had six domains (topic areas); SOA-C03 has five. AWS moved the old cost and performance tasks into Domain 1 (the comparison page shows tasks 6.1 and 6.2 became task 1.3). The new version adds tasks such as building stacks of resources with CloudFormation and the AWS CDK (two AWS tools that create infrastructure from code) and network monitoring with CloudWatch, AWS's monitoring service.

Does the CloudOps exam still have labs?
No labs appear in the SOA-C03 exam guide. It lists two question types: multiple choice, with one right answer out of four, and multiple response, with two or more right answers out of five or more options. Exam labs were hands-on tasks done in a live AWS account during the test. AWS announced that from March 28, 2023, the SysOps Administrator exam would not include them, and said this applied until further notice. Study guides written before that date may still describe labs. AWS Builder Labs, the AWS Cloud Quest game and AWS Jam team events (hands-on AWS practice and games) are training tools, not part of the exam.
What does the CloudOps Engineer exam test?
It tests operations: keeping workloads on AWS monitored, available, automated, secure and connected. The SOA-C03 guide splits the scored questions into five domains.

| Reliability and business continuity | 22% |
| Deployment, provisioning and automation | 22% |
| Networking and content delivery | 18% |
| Security and compliance | 16% |
Domains 1 and 2 together make up 44% of the scored content in AWS's exam guide. They cover monitoring and remediation (fixing what monitoring finds) plus reliability and business continuity, so close to half the exam is about spotting problems and keeping services up. Business continuity means backups and disaster recovery: getting systems back after a failure.
The guide also lists job tasks the target candidate is not expected to do. They include designing distributed architectures (systems spread across multiple servers), designing CI/CD pipelines (automated build-and-release processes), developing software, and analyzing costs and total cost of ownership (what a system costs to run over its life). Those are design, development and cost-analysis tasks; the guide leaves them out, so this exam covers running systems, not designing them.
Which job ads ask for AWS SysOps?
Some US system-administrator and cloud-engineer ads do. Of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads we counted on Adzuna in October 2026, the phrase aws certified sysops appeared in 35. In the same month, it appeared in 28 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads (Adzuna). Ad mentions are only one signal; the case for this exam rests on whether the operations skills it tests match the job you want.
The rename shapes how to read both counts. An ad that asks only for "CloudOps Engineer," or that gives only the code SOA-C03, does not match our phrase, and we have not measured how many ads use the new name. We count the phrase whether the ad says required or preferred, and one month of data says nothing about a trend. Our role pages for system administrators and cloud engineers list the other certifications and skills those ads name.
Outside the US, in October 2026, the phrase appeared in 7 of the 1,150 cloud-engineer ads and 4 of the 270 system-administrator ads in India (Adzuna). These samples are small, so read them with care.
Are CloudOps jobs getting more remote work in Europe?
We cannot answer that from our data. Our count does not record whether an ad offers remote work. Nor do we count MLOps (running machine-learning systems), DevOps (automating how software is built, tested and released) or site reliability engineering (SRE, keeping live services up) ads for this exam. A poster on r/AWSCertifications asked this question in August 2026, and another poster asked it elsewhere.
What we can show is where the phrase turns up in Europe. In October 2026, aws certified sysops appeared in 4 of the 1,160 German cloud-engineer ads and none of the 475 UK cloud-engineer ads (Adzuna). A zero for this one phrase in that UK sample does not show whether UK employers want AWS skills; check ads for your own target jobs. In German ads we search for the English phrase, so that count misses ads written fully in German.
How much does AWS SysOps Administrator cost?
The CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam costs $150 at AWS's US list price, and a failed attempt costs the full fee again. AWS makes you wait 14 calendar days before a retake and sets no limit on attempts. Its price table lists Associate exams at €128 in euro markets and updates prices at least once a year, in May, so check your currency before you book.
After you pass, AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher (a code that halves the fee of your next AWS exam) in your AWS Certification account, and its recertification page says you can use it to renew. The certification lasts three years, so over those three years your exam fees are $150 for each attempt.
| Scenario | How the total is built | Exam fees |
|---|---|---|
| Pass on the first try | $150 × 1 attempt | $150 for three years |
| Pass on the second try | $150 × 2 attempts | $300 for three years |
| Pass on the first try, renew once with the latest SOA-C03, with or without the voucher | $150 + $150 (no voucher) or $150 + ($150 × 50%) (valid voucher) | $300, or $225 with a valid voucher, for up to six years |
| Pass on the first try, renew with DevOps Engineer – Professional and the voucher | $150 + ($300 × 50%) | $300, with a Professional certification as well |
Source: AWS exam page, price table and certification policies. Totals are our sums of exam fees only, and the voucher rows assume the voucher is still valid when you book; Professional exams cost $300 at US list price.
These are exam fees only. Courses, practice tests and AWS account usage while you practice cost extra, and we did not price them. AWS describes the voucher as a 50% discount on your next exam; we did not check how many vouchers a pass earns. A third renewal route is AWS's Skill Builder route (we did not check its terms or price).

How hard is the AWS SysOps Administrator exam today?
AWS publishes no pass rate, so no figure can rank its difficulty. The guide does say who it is written for: a year of hands-on AWS experience and at least a year in a related operations role (AWS does not say whether the two overlap).
The exam has 65 questions in 130 minutes, two minutes per question. Only 50 count toward your score; the other 15 are unscored and do not affect your result. Results come as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, a converted score rather than a percentage of right answers, and you need 720. You pass on your total, so a strong domain can make up for a weak one. A blank answer counts as wrong and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer everything.
You take it with Pearson VUE, the company that delivers AWS exams, at a test center or online with a proctor (a supervisor who watches you through your webcam). The exam is offered in English, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese; AWS will retire the Korean and Simplified Chinese versions after November 19, 2026.
One poster who had just passed asked whether the exam's reputation was deserved or whether they had drawn an easier set of questions. A single post cannot settle that. Another poster asked how reliable a popular third-party practice-test set for CloudOps was. We do not rate practice tests, and a practice-test percentage does not convert into the scaled 720. Check any practice set against the five SOA-C03 domains, since material written for SOA-C02 may still follow the six old ones.
How long does it take to get AWS SysOps Administrator?
The AWS pages we read give no study-time figure, and we found fewer than 10 study-time reports in the Reddit posts we collected, so we give none either. The long part is the experience: AWS's guide assumes about a year of hands-on AWS operations and at least a year in a related operations role.
If your work already covers four or five of the five domains, expect gap-filling; if two or three domains are new to you, treat it as learning, not revising. Gap-filling means matching your work to the domains and learning what is missing, such as CloudFormation if you have only clicked through the AWS Management Console (AWS's web interface). The exam guide expects you to perform operations with the console and the AWS CLI (its command-line tool) and to be familiar with at least one scripting language.
One poster asked about an 85-hour video course for this exam. We do not rate courses; whatever you use, compare its contents with the domains and the out-of-scope list in the exam guide.
Solutions Architect or SysOps: which should you take first?
Take the one that matches your work now: CloudOps Engineer – Associate if you run systems, Solutions Architect – Associate (exam SAA-C03) if you design them or have no operations job yet. AWS sets no prerequisite for either, and both cost $150 with 65 questions in 130 minutes.
If you are aiming at US cloud-engineer jobs and have no operations job yet, start with Solutions Architect. Of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads we counted on Adzuna in October 2026, aws certified solutions architect appeared in 242 and aws certified sysops in 28. The first phrase also matches the Professional-level Solutions Architect certification; the second misses ads that use only the CloudOps name. Because of the rename, the gap between the two phrases may be overstated.
A poster on r/AWSCertifications asked exactly this: they saw Solutions Architect as the one employers value most and CloudOps as closer to their own job. Our reading: take the exam you can back up with examples from your own work in an interview, then the other one, using the 50% voucher if it is still valid (one voucher pays for only one exam). Our Solutions Architect vs SysOps comparison sets the two exams side by side, and if you write code, our Developer vs Solutions Architect comparison covers that choice.
Another poster asked whether DevOps Engineer – Professional (AWS's advanced exam on automating AWS environments) was a sensible next step after Solutions Architect, CloudOps and Developer – Associate. AWS sets no prerequisite for it, and passing it also renews CloudOps Engineer – Associate. Whether it is the right next step depends on your experience; we did not check AWS's recommended experience for Professional exams.

How long is the certification valid, and how do you renew it?
CloudOps Engineer – Associate is valid for three years. AWS's recertification page lists three ways to recertify, meaning renew it before it expires:
- Pass the latest CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam (SOA-C03). This adds three years, and AWS's discount voucher can pay half.
- Pass DevOps Engineer – Professional, AWS's advanced exam on running and automating AWS environments. This also adds three years.
- Complete maintenance on AWS Skill Builder, AWS's online training site (terms and price unchecked). This adds one year, and your certification must be active and within 90 days of its expiration date.
The same row covers SysOps Administrator – Associate, so SysOps holders renew the same way. Our overview of AWS certifications shows how renewal works across all AWS levels.

AWS SysOps salary: what can we tell you?
We found no sourced salary figure for holders of this certification, and the AWS pages we read publish none. Pay follows the job, the city and your experience.
The closest official benchmark is for the occupation. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a government statistics agency, reports a median annual wage of $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators in May 2025. The median is the middle value: half earned more and half less. That figure covers all workers in the occupation, with or without an AWS certification, so it is not an AWS SysOps Administrator salary. For pay and demand by job title, start with our system-administrator page.
What do Reddit posters ask about whether AWS SysOps is worth it?
We found no poll or count of verdicts in the Reddit posts we collected, so we cannot say whether posters think it is worth it. What they asked are practical questions. Posters asked which Associate exam to take first, how reliable practice tests are, how hard the exam really is, which course to use and whether CloudOps-type jobs offer remote work in Europe. The sections on which exam first, difficulty, study time and job ads answer each one with the post linked.
What we did not check
- Pass rates: the AWS pages we read give none.
- What the badge is called after a SysOps holder renews.
- How long AWS's discount voucher stays valid, how many vouchers a pass earns, and the terms and price of the Skill Builder route.
- Prices beyond exam fees: courses, practice tests and AWS account usage while you practice.
- AWS's recommended experience for Professional exams.
- How many job ads ask for the exam by its new name, CloudOps Engineer.
- Remote-work shares, and MLOps, DevOps or SRE ads for this exam.
- Third-party courses and practice tests.

Questions people ask
Is AWS SysOps Administrator worth it?
Yes, if you already run IT systems and want to run them on AWS (Amazon Web Services). The exam is now called AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03; Associate is AWS's middle level) and costs $150. In our October 2026 count of Adzuna, a job-ad search site, the old-name phrase aws certified sysops appeared in 35 of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads. The phrase misses ads that use only the new name, so the true number may be higher.
Does the AWS SysOps Administrator certification still exist?
Not as an exam. AWS (Amazon Web Services) says the last day to take the SysOps Administrator – Associate exam (SOA-C02) was September 29, 2025. Since September 30, 2025, its successor has been AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate, exam SOA-C03, at a $150 exam fee. AWS's recertification page lists SysOps Administrator and CloudOps Engineer in the same row, with the same renewal options (read October 12, 2026).
How much does the AWS SysOps Administrator exam cost?
The CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam (SOA-C03), which replaced SysOps Administrator, costs $150 per attempt at AWS's US list price, and each failed attempt costs the full $150 again after a 14-day wait. Over the three years the certification lasts, that is $150 if you pass on the first try and $300 on the second. If the 50% discount voucher (a code AWS gives you after a pass that halves your next exam fee) is still valid when you renew, renewing once adds $75, for $225 in total; without it, $150 more, $300.
How hard is AWS SysOps Administrator?
The AWS (Amazon Web Services) pages we read give no pass rate for its CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam (SOA-C03), the renamed SysOps Administrator exam. It has 65 questions in 130 minutes, 50 of them scored, and you need a scaled score of 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale (a converted score, not a percentage of right answers). The exam guide assumes a year of hands-on AWS experience and at least a year in a related operations role such as system administrator. AWS does not say whether the two overlap or which part candidates find hardest.
How long does it take to get AWS SysOps Administrator?
The AWS (Amazon Web Services) pages we read give no study-time figure for its CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam, the renamed SysOps Administrator exam. We found fewer than 10 study-time reports in the Reddit posts we collected, so we give none. AWS recommends about a year of experience deploying, managing and operating workloads on AWS. If you fail, you can retake the exam after 14 calendar days.
What is the AWS SysOps Administrator salary?
We found no sourced salary figure for holders of AWS SysOps Administrator or its successor, CloudOps Engineer – Associate. The closest official benchmark covers a whole occupation: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a median annual wage of $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators in May 2025. The median is the middle value, and the figure includes all workers in that job, certified or not.
Does the AWS CloudOps Engineer exam have labs?
No labs appear in the SOA-C03 exam guide, which lists two question types: multiple choice (one right answer) and multiple response (two or more right answers). Exam labs were hands-on tasks in a live AWS (Amazon Web Services) account during the test. AWS said that from March 28, 2023, the old SysOps Administrator exam (SOA-C02) would not include them until further notice.
Should I take AWS Solutions Architect or SysOps first?
Take CloudOps Engineer – Associate (the renamed SysOps exam) first if you already work in operations or system administration, and Solutions Architect – Associate first if you design systems or have no operations job yet. AWS (Amazon Web Services) sets no prerequisite for either. In our October 2026 count of 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, aws certified solutions architect appeared in 242 and aws certified sysops in 28.
How do you renew AWS CloudOps Engineer or SysOps Administrator?
AWS (Amazon Web Services) lists three routes for both names on its recertification page. You can pass the latest CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam (SOA-C03) or DevOps Engineer – Professional (AWS's advanced exam on automating AWS environments), or complete maintenance on AWS Skill Builder, AWS's online training site (we did not check its terms or price). Each exam route adds three years; Skill Builder adds one year and needs an active certification within 90 days of its expiration date (read October 12, 2026).
Do Reddit posters think AWS SysOps Administrator is worth it?
We cannot say. We found no poll or count of verdicts in the Reddit posts we collected about the SysOps Administrator exam, now called CloudOps Engineer – Associate. What posters asked were practical questions: which Associate exam (AWS's middle level) to take first, how reliable practice tests are, how hard the exam is, which course to use and whether jobs offer remote work in Europe.
