AWS Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect: which should you take first?
Take AWS Cloud Practitioner first only if you are new to cloud or work outside IT. If you already work in IT, go straight to Solutions Architect – Associate; AWS requires neither first. On cost, AWS Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect comes down to $100 for a 90-minute exam against $150 for a 130-minute one, at AWS's US list prices.
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (exam CLF-C02) is the Foundational-level certification from Amazon Web Services, built for candidates new to cloud who may not have an IT background. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (exam SAA-C03) is an Associate-level certification that validates the ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
Our job-ad data cannot settle the choice. Of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), 42 contained the exact phrase aws certified cloud practitioner. We have no count for Solutions Architect – Associate, so this page compares the exams, not their ad counts.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect Associate: what is the difference?
The difference is level and purpose. The Foundational exam checks that you can recognize AWS services and describe security, pricing and support at a business level; Solutions Architect – Associate checks that you can pick and combine services to meet a security, resilience, performance and cost requirement.
| Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) | Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) | |

On both exams, unanswered questions count as wrong and there is no penalty for guessing. The Associate exam uses compensatory scoring: you need 720 overall, not a passing score in each section.
What does each exam cover?
The Foundational exam tests vocabulary and judgment about AWS as a business service. The Associate tests design decisions, split into four kinds of architecture.
| Exam | Content domains AWS lists, with their share of scored content |
|---|---|
| CLF-C02 Cloud Practitioner | Cloud concepts 24%; security and compliance 30%; cloud technology and services 34%; billing, pricing, and support 12% |
| SAA-C03 Solutions Architect – Associate | Design secure architectures 30%; design resilient architectures 26%; design high-performing architectures 24%; design cost-optimized architectures 20% |

The Cloud Practitioner guide names the job tasks its target candidate is not expected to perform: coding, designing cloud architecture, troubleshooting, implementation, and load and performance testing. Designing cloud architecture is exactly what the Associate exam is about.
Our reading of the two guides: Cloud Practitioner questions ask what a service is for or which pricing or support option applies. Associate questions set a security, resilience, performance or cost requirement and ask which design meets it.
Is the Solutions Architect Associate harder than Cloud Practitioner?
Yes, on every measure AWS publishes. The Associate gives you 130 minutes instead of 90 for the same 65 questions, asks for a scaled score of 720 instead of 700, and is aimed at people with at least a year of hands-on design work on AWS.
For Cloud Practitioner, AWS describes a candidate with up to six months of exposure to AWS and adds that this exposure is not required. For the Associate, the exam guide asks for at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions with AWS services. The certification page softens that: candidates with one to three years of IT experience have prepared for and earned it as a starting point. AWS adds that the Associate does not require deep hands-on coding experience, though familiarity with basic programming concepts helps.
We have too few posts to compare study time for the two exams. In the Reddit posts we collected by October 2026, 15 people who wrote about Solutions Architect – Associate preparation reported a median of two months of study (middle half 1.2 to 3 months). This is self-reported and has no Cloud Practitioner counterpart.

AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs AWS Cloud Practitioner: should you skip Cloud Practitioner?
Skip it if you already work in IT, and take it first if you are new to cloud. AWS sets no prerequisite for any of its certifications, so the order is your choice. The advice below is based on the audience and experience AWS states for each exam, not on job-ad counts.
- No IT background, or a non-technical role on an AWS team (sales, marketing, product or project management): Cloud Practitioner matches the audience AWS designed it for. Once you pass, AWS's 50% discount on your next exam would put the Associate at $75.
- Working in IT, with little AWS experience: go straight to the Associate, but expect to build the hands-on gap yourself, because AWS's target candidate has a year of designing on AWS. AWS says candidates with one to three years of IT experience have earned it as a first AWS certification, and the direct route saves $25 in exam fees. Cloud Practitioner is not a rehearsal for it: AWS lists designing cloud architecture as outside its scope. A failed Associate attempt costs the full $150 again after a 14-day wait.
- A year or more of designing on AWS: you are the Associate's target candidate. The Foundational exam would mostly cover ground you already know; the part likely to be new is billing, pricing and support (12% of scored content).
- Already holding Cloud Practitioner: AWS's Cloud Practitioner page names Solutions Architect, Developer and SysOps Administrator (since renamed CloudOps Engineer) as the Associate certifications that come next. Passing any of them renews Cloud Practitioner too.
- Your employer paid for Cloud Practitioner: the 50% discount for your next exam appears as a voucher in your own AWS Certification Account, so check it there.
How much do the two paths cost?
At AWS's US list prices, the Associate on its own costs $150, and Cloud Practitioner followed by the Associate costs $175 in exam fees on first attempts. AWS says that once you earn one AWS certification, you get a 50% discount on your next AWS certification exam.
| Path | Exams | Exam fees at US list prices |
|---|---|---|
| Solutions Architect – Associate only | SAA-C03 | $150 |
| Cloud Practitioner, then the Associate with the 50% discount | CLF-C02, then SAA-C03 | $175 ($100 plus $75) |
| Cloud Practitioner only | CLF-C02 | $100 |
Source: AWS exam pages and exam pricing policy, read October 3 to 6, 2026. The path totals are our sums.
Going Cloud Practitioner first costs $25 more in exam fees than going straight to the Associate ($175 vs $150), assuming you pass both on the first try. The pages we read do not say how long the discount voucher stays valid, so check its terms in your AWS Certification Account before you plan around it.
A failed exam means a 14-day wait and the full fee again: $100 for Cloud Practitioner and $150 for the Associate. AWS sets no limit on attempts. AWS updates exam prices at least once a year, in May, so check the current fee before you book.

Does Solutions Architect Associate renew Cloud Practitioner?
Yes. AWS lists passing any Associate-level exam as one way to renew Cloud Practitioner, so passing Solutions Architect – Associate adds three years to an active Cloud Practitioner. The rule works in one direction only: the Foundational exam does not renew the Associate.
| Cloud Practitioner | Solutions Architect – Associate | |
|---|---|---|
| Renew by retaking | The latest Cloud Practitioner exam | The latest Associate exam (the 50% discount voucher can be used) |
| Renewed by a higher exam | Any Associate or Professional exam | Solutions Architect – Professional |
| Other route | AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner, free game-based training with no exam | Maintenance on AWS Skill Builder, with a paid subscription |
| Time added | 3 years by exam or Cloud Quest | 3 years by exam; 1 year by Skill Builder maintenance |
Source: AWS recertification page and the Solutions Architect – Associate certification page, read October 6, 2026.
If you hold both, passing the latest Solutions Architect – Associate exam renews both at once. So do not pay to renew Cloud Practitioner separately; plan the Associate renewal and let it carry the Foundational one.
Three years run from the day you pass the renewing exam. Skill Builder maintenance needs an active certification within 90 days of expiration and an active Skill Builder subscription. Cloud Quest is free and needs no exam; it opens when your Cloud Practitioner is within 6 months of expiring.
What do job ads show for the two certifications?
They show a count for one exact phrase only: the full Cloud Practitioner name. We have no count for Solutions Architect – Associate.
In October 2026, the exact phrase aws certified cloud practitioner appeared in 42 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads we counted (Adzuna); we do not count it in DevOps-engineer ads. Outside the US, the same phrase appeared in 3 of 475 UK cloud-engineer ads and in 3 of 1,150 cloud-engineer ads in India in October 2026 (Adzuna).
The phrase aws certified appeared in 297 of the same US cloud-engineer ads, and in 148 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna). It matches any AWS certification name, Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect included, so it cannot be split between the two.
We count a phrase whether the ad says required or preferred, and an ad that contains the full Cloud Practitioner name contains aws certified as well, so the two counts overlap and cannot be added. Our cloud-engineer role page and DevOps-engineer role page list the tools and skills those ads name, and the methodology page explains the count.

Are the exams changing?
AWS has announced no end date for CLF-C02 or SAA-C03 on the pages we checked on October 6, 2026. The Professional exam moves from SAP-C02 to SAP-C03: the last day for SAP-C02 is November 16, 2026, and SAP-C03 delivery begins November 17, 2026 (AWS Training and Certification blog). The pages we read do not say whether SAP-C03 renews the Associate the way the current Professional exam does, so check the recertification page before relying on that route. AWS will also retire the Cloud Practitioner exam in Italian and German, and the Solutions Architect – Associate exam in Italian, after December 31, 2026.

Questions people ask
Should I take AWS Cloud Practitioner before Solutions Architect Associate?
Not if you already work in IT. AWS sets no prerequisite for either exam. It designed Cloud Practitioner ($100) for people new to cloud who may not have an IT background, while Solutions Architect – Associate ($150) is aimed at candidates with at least one year of hands-on experience designing solutions on AWS. Our reading: take Cloud Practitioner first only if you are new to cloud or work in a non-technical role. Source: AWS certification pages, read October 2026.
Is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate harder than the Cloud Practitioner?
Yes, by the measures AWS publishes. The Solutions Architect – Associate exam (SAA-C03) runs 130 minutes and needs a scaled score of 720; the Cloud Practitioner exam (CLF-C02) runs 90 minutes and needs 700. Both have 65 questions. AWS aims the Associate at people with at least one year of hands-on AWS design experience, and Cloud Practitioner at people with up to six months of exposure to AWS, which it does not require. Source: AWS exam guides, read October 2026.
Does passing Solutions Architect Associate renew Cloud Practitioner?
Yes. AWS lists passing any Associate-level exam, Solutions Architect – Associate included, as a way to renew an active AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner for three more years. It works only one way: Cloud Practitioner does not renew the Associate, which renews through the latest Associate exam, the Solutions Architect – Professional certification or one year of maintenance on AWS Skill Builder. Source: AWS recertification page, read October 2026.
How much do AWS Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect cost together?
The two exams cost $175 at AWS's US list prices if you pass each on the first try. That is $100 for Cloud Practitioner, then $75 for Solutions Architect – Associate with the 50% discount AWS gives on your next exam once you hold one AWS certification. The Associate alone costs $150. Each failed attempt costs the full fee again. Source: AWS exam pricing pages, read October 2026.
Do job ads ask for AWS Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect?
Our count answers this only for Cloud Practitioner. Of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads we counted in October 2026 (Adzuna), 42 contained the exact phrase aws certified cloud practitioner. We have no count for Solutions Architect – Associate. The broader phrase aws certified, found in 297 of those US cloud-engineer ads, covers every AWS certification and cannot be split between the two.
Can AWS Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect get you a first cloud job?
Our reading: neither certification on its own shows that you can do the work. AWS lists coding, designing cloud architecture, troubleshooting and implementation as outside the scope of the Cloud Practitioner exam. Solutions Architect – Associate tests architecture design but expects a year of hands-on AWS experience. Our job-ad count covers only the Cloud Practitioner phrase, not the Associate.
