AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs SysOps Administrator: which should you take?
The AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs SysOps Administrator choice comes down to the job: take Solutions Architect to design systems on Amazon Web Services, SysOps (renamed CloudOps Engineer in 2025) to run them. If you have a year or more in IT operations, take CloudOps first; otherwise start with Solutions Architect.
Of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads on Adzuna (a job-ad site) in October 2026, the exact phrase aws certified solutions architect appeared in 242 and the old name aws certified sysops in 28. The second phrase misses ads that say only CloudOps Engineer.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (exam SAA-C03) is an Associate-level certification, the level between Foundational and Professional. AWS says it validates the ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework, AWS's own set of design best practices. AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (exam SOA-C03) is the same level; its exam guide says it validates the ability to deploy, manage and operate workloads on AWS.

AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs SysOps Administrator: what is the difference?
The difference is design against operations. Solutions Architect – Associate asks which combination of AWS services meets a security, resilience, performance or cost requirement; CloudOps Engineer – Associate asks how you deploy, monitor, fix and secure workloads that are already running.

A scaled score is your raw result converted to AWS's 100 to 1,000 scale. Unscored questions do not affect your score. Online proctored means you take the exam at home while a remote supervisor watches through your webcam. Both exams score the total only: you need 720 overall, not a pass in each topic area, and there is no penalty for guessing.
Does the SysOps Administrator exam still exist?
No. The last day to take AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02) was September 29, 2025, and the updated exam, AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03), has been in use since September 30, 2025.
AWS says the CloudOps certification replaces the SysOps one, and the exam code kept its SOA prefix. AWS's recertification page lists CloudOps Engineer and SysOps Administrator in the same row, with the same renewal options. Choosing between SysOps and Solutions Architect today therefore means choosing between SOA-C03 and SAA-C03, and this page compares those two exams.

Does the CloudOps exam have labs?
The SOA-C03 exam guide lists two question types: multiple choice (one correct answer out of four) and multiple response (two or more correct answers out of five or more). Exam labs, hands-on tasks done in a live AWS account during the test, belonged to the old SOA-C02 exam. AWS announced that as of March 28, 2023, the SysOps Administrator exam would not include exam labs, and said at the time that this applied until further notice.
Study guides written for SOA-C02 may still describe those labs. AWS's own hands-on practice tools, such as AWS Builder Labs, the learning game AWS Cloud Quest and the team challenges of AWS Jam, are training, not part of the exam.
What does each exam cover?
Each exam guide splits the content into domains, the topic areas AWS lists with their share of the scored questions. All four Solutions Architect domains start with "Design"; the five CloudOps domains cover running systems.
| Exam | Content domains, with their share of scored content |
|---|---|
| SAA-C03 Solutions Architect – Associate | Design secure architectures 30%; design resilient architectures 26%; design high-performing architectures 24%; design cost-optimized architectures 20% |
| SOA-C03 CloudOps Engineer – Associate | Monitoring, logging, analysis, remediation and performance optimization 22%; reliability and business continuity 22%; deployment, provisioning and automation 22%; security and compliance 16%; networking and content delivery 18% |
Source: AWS SAA-C03 exam guide, read October 6, 2026, and SOA-C03 exam guide, read October 12, 2026.
The CloudOps guide expects you to work in the AWS Management Console (AWS's web interface) and the AWS CLI (its command-line tool). Its tasks include monitoring and troubleshooting systems, applying networking concepts such as DNS (the system that turns web addresses into server addresses) and firewalls, running backup and disaster-recovery procedures, and handling incidents. The guide also expects familiarity with at least one scripting language.
The same guide names job tasks its target candidate is not expected to perform. They include designing distributed architectures, designing CI/CD pipelines (automated build-and-release processes), analyzing costs and managing billing. Those are close to what the Solutions Architect exam tests, where cost-optimized design alone is 20% of the scored content.
Compared with SOA-C02, AWS cut the CloudOps exam from six domains to five and moved the old cost and performance optimization tasks into Domain 1. It added tasks such as creating stacks of resources with CloudFormation and the AWS CDK, two AWS tools that build infrastructure from code.
Which is harder, Solutions Architect or CloudOps Engineer?
AWS's own figures do not make either one harder: both exams last 130 minutes, have 65 questions and need a scaled score of 720. What differs is the experience AWS expects and the kind of question you face.
The CloudOps guide asks for a year of hands-on AWS operations plus at least a year in a related operations role such as system administrator. The Solutions Architect guide asks for at least a year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions with AWS services, with no separate job-role requirement. If you have not yet run production systems (the live systems customers use), the CloudOps questions on troubleshooting and incident handling assume work you have not done.
People who post on Reddit disagree, and our sample is small. One poster who passed CloudOps first, with a score just above the passing threshold, thought Solutions Architect might be easier; that is one opinion, not a measure. In the Reddit posts we collected by October 2026, 15 people who wrote about Solutions Architect – Associate preparation self-reported a typical (median) study time of two months, and half of them reported between 1.2 and 3 months. We found fewer than 10 such reports for CloudOps or SysOps, so we give no figure for it.
Which one fits your job?
Choose Solutions Architect – Associate if your work is deciding how systems on AWS are built, and CloudOps Engineer – Associate if your work is keeping them running. This advice follows the audiences AWS describes in the two exam guides, not our job-ad counts.
- You want design work (solutions architect, or a cloud engineer who plans new systems): take Solutions Architect – Associate. Every domain in its exam guide is a design domain.
- You work as a system administrator or in IT operations and are moving to AWS: take CloudOps Engineer – Associate. AWS's target candidate for it has a year in an operations role such as system administrator, and the role examples on its certification page include Cloud Operations Specialist, Cloud Support Engineer and CloudOps Engineer. With less than a year in the role, our reading is that you do not yet match that target candidate: Solutions Architect is the safer first exam, and CloudOps a natural second.
- You keep live services up and handle incidents (site reliability engineering, or SRE, in some job titles): our reading of the guides is that CloudOps fits this work. Its first two domains, on monitoring, remediation, reliability and business continuity, make up 44% of the scored content.
- You have no target job yet: start with Solutions Architect – Associate. The CloudOps guide expects a year in an operations role, which the Solutions Architect guide does not ask for. For someone new to cloud altogether, our comparison of AWS Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect covers the Foundational exam that comes before both.
One poster on r/AWSCertifications asked exactly this: "Should I pass Solutions Architect (SAA) or CloudOps Engineer (SOA)?" The poster saw Solutions Architect as the one employers value most and CloudOps as closer to their own job. Our reading for someone in that position: take the exam that matches the work you already do, because you can back it up with real examples in an interview. Job ads do not settle it for one person. Solutions Architect is named more often in US cloud-engineer ads, but our SysOps count catches only the old name, not ads that say CloudOps, so the size of the gap is rough.
You can take both: AWS sets no prerequisites between its certifications, and the 50% discount on your next exam lowers the cost of the second.

How much do both exams cost?
Each exam costs $150 at AWS's US list price, and both together cost $225 on first attempts. That is $150 for the first, then $75 for the second with the 50% discount AWS gives on your next exam once you hold one AWS certification. AWS issues that discount as a voucher, a code that pays half of the exam fee.
| Path | Exam fees at US list prices |
|---|---|
| Solutions Architect – Associate only | $150 |
| CloudOps Engineer – Associate only | $150 |
| Both, the second with the 50% discount | $225 ($150 plus $75) |
| Both, without the discount | $300 ($150 plus $150) |

AWS's price table lists Associate exams at €128 in euros. A failed exam means a 14-day wait and the full fee again, and AWS sets no limit on attempts. AWS updates exam prices at least once a year, in May, so check the current fee before you book.

Does one certification renew the other?
No. On AWS's recertification page, each Associate renews through its own latest exam, one named Professional exam or one year of maintenance on AWS Skill Builder, and neither Associate appears as a renewal route for the other.
| Solutions Architect – Associate | CloudOps Engineer – Associate (and SysOps Administrator) | |
|---|---|---|
| Renew by retaking | The latest SAA-C03 exam | The latest SOA-C03 exam |
| Renewed by a Professional exam | Solutions Architect – Professional | DevOps Engineer – Professional |
| Other route | Maintenance on AWS Skill Builder | Maintenance on AWS Skill Builder |
| Time added | 3 years by exam; 1 year by Skill Builder | 3 years by exam; 1 year by Skill Builder |
Source: AWS recertification page, read October 12, 2026.
AWS Skill Builder is AWS's online training platform; renewing through it needs an active certification within 90 days of expiration and an active Monthly, Annual or Team subscription. Professional exams cost $300 at US list price. Holding both Associates means renewing them separately.
A poster on r/AWSCertifications asked whether it was OK to go for DevOps Engineer – Professional after Solutions Architect, CloudOps and Developer. AWS requires no certification before any of its exams, and DevOps Engineer – Professional renews CloudOps Engineer – Associate, so that order works on AWS's rules.
The Solutions Architect – Professional exam is changing: the last day for its current version, SAP-C02, is November 16, 2026, and the new version, SAP-C03, starts November 17, 2026 (AWS Training and Certification blog). Check the recertification page before relying on the Professional route after that date.
What do job ads show for the two certifications?
They show exact-phrase counts for both certifications in US cloud-engineer ads, the one job title where we count both. Of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads we counted on Adzuna in October 2026, the exact phrase aws certified solutions architect appeared in 242 and aws certified sysops in 28.
Read the two counts with their limits. The Solutions Architect phrase includes "certified," so a job titled "AWS Solutions Architect" is not counted unless the ad names the certification, and the phrase also matches AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional. The SysOps phrase is the old name, so ads that ask only for CloudOps Engineer are not counted, so the number of ads that ask for this certification may be higher. An ad that contains both phrases is counted for each, and we count a phrase whether the ad says required or preferred.
The next two figures use a different job title for each certification, so do not compare them with each other. In October 2026, aws certified solutions architect appeared in 66 of 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads, and aws certified sysops in 35 of 6,233 US system-administrator ads (Adzuna).
Outside the US, our cloud-engineer samples are small, so read these counts with care: they show that employers there use the phrases, not which certification they prefer.

Questions people ask
Which is harder, AWS Solutions Architect Associate or SysOps Administrator?
AWS publishes no figure that makes one harder. Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) and CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03, the renamed SysOps Administrator exam) both last 130 minutes, have 65 questions and need a scaled score of 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale. The difference is the experience AWS expects. The CloudOps exam guide asks for a year of AWS operations work plus at least a year in an operations role such as system administrator; the Solutions Architect guide asks for a year of designing cloud solutions on AWS. Source: AWS exam guides, checked October 2026.
Does the AWS SysOps Administrator certification still exist?
Not under that name. The last day to take the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate exam (SOA-C02) was September 29, 2025. Since September 30, 2025, the updated exam is AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03), which AWS says replaces the SysOps certification. It costs $150, lasts 130 minutes and needs a scaled score of 720. Source: AWS certification pages, read October 2026.
Does the AWS CloudOps Engineer exam have labs?
The CloudOps Engineer – Associate exam guide (SOA-C03) lists two question types: multiple choice, with one correct answer, and multiple response, with two or more correct answers. AWS had already removed exam labs, hands-on tasks done in a live AWS account during the test, from the old SysOps Administrator exam (SOA-C02) as of March 28, 2023. Source: AWS exam guide and AWS Training and Certification blog, read October 2026.
Should I take AWS Solutions Architect or CloudOps Engineer first?
Take Solutions Architect – Associate first if you want to design systems on AWS or have no operations job yet, and CloudOps Engineer – Associate (formerly SysOps Administrator) first if you already work in operations or system administration. AWS sets no prerequisite for either, and the CloudOps exam guide expects a year in an operations role such as system administrator. This advice rests on the audiences AWS describes in its exam guides (checked October 2026), not on job-ad counts.
How much do AWS Solutions Architect and CloudOps Engineer cost together?
The two AWS Associate exams cost $225 together at US list prices if you pass each on the first try. That is $150 for the first, then $75 for the second with the 50% discount AWS gives on your next exam once you hold one AWS certification. Without that discount, the pair costs $300. Each failed attempt costs the full $150 again after a 14-day wait. Source: AWS certification and exam pricing pages, read October 2026.
Do job ads ask for AWS Solutions Architect or SysOps Administrator?
Some do. Of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads we counted on Adzuna (a job-ad site) in October 2026, the exact phrase aws certified solutions architect appeared in 242. The old-name phrase aws certified sysops in 28. The first phrase also matches the Professional certification; the second misses ads that use only the new CloudOps Engineer name. An ad that contains both phrases is counted for each.
Does AWS Solutions Architect Associate renew CloudOps Engineer or SysOps Administrator?
No. On AWS's recertification page, CloudOps Engineer – Associate (and the older SysOps Administrator – Associate) renews through the latest SOA-C03 exam or the DevOps Engineer – Professional exam. It can also add one year through maintenance on AWS Skill Builder, AWS's online training platform, which needs a paid subscription for this route. Solutions Architect – Associate renews through its own latest exam, Solutions Architect – Professional or Skill Builder. Neither Associate appears as a renewal route for the other.
