Is AWS Solution Architect worth it?
3.1% of cloud engineer job ads in the United States name the AWS Solutions Architect Associate (242 of 7,726, Adzuna, October 2026)
Our answer to "is AWS Solution Architect worth it": yes, if you have IT experience and want cloud-engineer jobs (building systems on computing power rented online). AWS (Amazon Web Services) charges $150 for the exam. In our October 2026 count of Adzuna, a job-ad search site, aws certified solutions architect appeared in at least 242 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads.
The full name is AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, exam code SAA-C03. A solutions architect plans how an organization's systems are built on AWS: which services (AWS's separate products, such as rented servers or storage) to use and how they fit together. AWS sorts its certifications into Foundational, Associate and Professional levels, plus Specialty exams for narrow topics. Associate certifications "validate core AWS skills" with "prior cloud or IT experience recommended." The Foundational level below it, which includes Cloud Practitioner (AWS's starter exam on cloud basics), needs "no prior experience." How we count ads.

Is AWS Solutions Architect Associate worth it for your situation?
The AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification is worth it if you already work in IT or with AWS and want cloud-engineering or design work; with no IT background, start one level lower. AWS's exam page recommends "at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services" (hands-on: you have done it yourself, not only read about it). The same page adds that "candidates with 1-3 years of IT experience have been able to prepare for and earn this certification."
- IT worker (help desk, system administration, networking or programming) moving into cloud work: take it if you pass the exam-guide check in the First step paragraph below. Expect longer study if you have not used AWS at work.
- Career changer or student with no IT work experience: start with Cloud Practitioner.
- Developer, or someone aiming for DevOps (automating how software is built and released): read the Developer – Associate comparison first.
- Your target employers run Azure, Microsoft's cloud service: read the AZ-104 comparison (Microsoft's Azure administrator exam) first.
- Two or more years of designing on AWS already: read Associate vs Professional before you book.
First step, even if you have no target job yet: without IT work behind you, read our Cloud Practitioner page. Otherwise, open the free exam guide (AWS's official list of what the exam tests) and read the four topic-area names (AWS calls them domains) and the tasks under the first one. If you cannot say in one sentence what each task means, start with Cloud Practitioner.
What does the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam test?
The SAA-C03 exam tests design. The exam guide (version 1.1) says the exam "validates a candidate's ability to design solutions based on the AWS Well-Architected Framework," which is AWS's published set of design practices. The guide splits the scored questions into four domains:
| Domain (topic area) | Share of scored content |
|---|---|
| Design secure architectures | 30% |
| Design resilient architectures (systems that keep running when parts fail) | 26% |
| Design high-performing architectures | 24% |
| Design cost-optimized architectures | 20% |
Source: AWS, SAA-C03 exam guide, version 1.1.
The guide also lists services that are out of scope, and says the list is not complete. Examples include developer tools (which build and ship software) such as AWS CodeBuild and AWS CodeDeploy, and all Internet of Things services (for devices connected to the internet). Use that list to decide what not to study.

Can AWS Solutions Architect Associate get you a job?
The certification can support an application for cloud-engineer and DevOps-engineer jobs; no count can show that it gets someone hired. Cloud engineers build and run systems on cloud platforms. DevOps engineers automate how software is built, tested and released.

Job ads naming aws certified solutions architect, by country and role, Adzuna, October 2026.
The DevOps column shows that employers name the certification in DevOps ads, not that the exam covers DevOps tools; see what the exam tests.
What can the ad count not show?
The count may be too low, which is why this page says "at least": an ad that writes only SAA-C03, AWS SAA or Solutions Architect Associate, without the words aws certified, is not counted. We search French ads by the French job title but with the English certification phrase. Nor can the count show whether an ad requires the certification or only prefers it. The count covers one month, so it says nothing about a trend. The cloud-engineer role page lists the certifications and skills those ads name.
How much does the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam cost?
The exam costs $150 in US dollars, and each failed attempt costs the full fee again. AWS's price table lists other currencies, such as €128 in euro markets and a rupee price for India; check it for your country. AWS's after-testing policy sets a 14-day wait before a retake and no limit on attempts.
After you pass any AWS exam, AWS puts a 50% discount voucher (a code that cuts the price of your next AWS exam) in your AWS Certification account. Its recertification page says you can use it to renew.
| Scenario | How the cost is built | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Pass on the first try | $150 × 1 attempt | $150, valid 3 years |
| Pass on the second try | $150 × 2 attempts | $300, valid 3 years |
| Pass on the first try, renew once by passing the latest Associate exam with the voucher | $150 + ($150 × 50%) | $225 for up to 6 years; $300 without the voucher |
| Pass on the first try, then pass Professional on its first try with the voucher | $150 + ($300 × 50%) | $300; both valid 3 years from the Professional pass |
| Cloud Practitioner first, then this exam with the voucher | $100 + ($150 × 50%) | $175 |

How hard is the SAA-C03 exam?
The SAA-C03 exam is harder than Cloud Practitioner on the three fixed measures AWS publishes for both: 130 minutes compared with 90, a passing score of 720 compared with 700, and recommended hands-on experience compared with none.
The exam has 65 questions, which works out to two minutes per question. Only 50 count toward your score. The other 15 are unscored questions that AWS is trying out for future exams and does not identify. Each question is multiple choice (one right answer out of four) or multiple response (two or more right answers out of five or more options).
Results come as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000. You need 720. A scaled score is not a percentage of right answers, and the guide does not say how many right answers equal 720. You pass on your total, so a weak domain can be balanced by a strong one. A blank answer counts as wrong, and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
You take the exam with Pearson VUE, the company that delivers AWS exams, at a test center or online with a proctor, a supervisor who watches you through your webcam. The exam is offered in 10 languages, and AWS will retire the Italian version after December 31, 2026. If English is not your first language and you take the exam in English, you can ask once, before you register, for 30 extra minutes; AWS calls this ESL +30.

How long does it take to prepare for AWS Solutions Architect Associate?
People who posted about it on Reddit report a median (middle value) of two months; AWS gives no study-time figure. That median comes from 15 first-person statements in the posts we collected. The middle half took between about five weeks and three months; the shortest took one month and the longest six. These figures are self-reported by people who chose to post their results, so treat them as a rough guide.
Two questions in those posts ask a version of "Can I pass AWS SAA (this exam) in 30 Days?" Our reading: if you have less than the experience AWS recommends, plan for the longer end of that range.
AWS's exam page points to a four-step exam prep plan, the Official Practice Question Set and the Official Practice Exam on AWS Skill Builder, AWS's online training site. AWS's certification page also mentions free Exam Readiness digital courses and free live webinars.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs Professional: which comes first?
Take the Associate first unless you already have two or more years of designing on AWS; AWS's certification overview says "2+ years AWS experience required" for Professional certifications. In AWS's description, the Professional candidate can "provide expert guidance on architectural design across multiple applications and projects."
| Associate (SAA-C03) | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| AWS level | Associate | Professional |

Two facts shape the plan. First, passing the Professional automatically recertifies (renews) the Associate, so moving up within three years saves you a separate Associate renewal. Second, the Professional exam is changing: registration for the new version, SAP-C03, opens October 27, 2026, and the last day to take the current SAP-C02 is November 16, 2026. If you cannot take it by then, study for SAP-C03 and check its new exam guide before you buy course material.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs Developer Associate: which fits you?
Pick Solutions Architect if you want to design systems, and Developer if you write code that runs on AWS. Both are Associate-level exams at $150, with 65 questions in 130 minutes. For Developer – Associate, AWS recommends "one or more years of prior hands-on experience" in "developing and maintaining applications by using AWS services," and names "individuals in IT or cloud developer job roles" as its audience.
The Solutions Architect guide, by contrast, lists developer tools as out of scope. AWS's certification page says the Developer – Associate exam is being updated, so check its exam page for the current version and dates before you book.

Do you need Cloud Practitioner before Solutions Architect?
Yes, if you have no IT work experience; with IT experience, you can go straight to Solutions Architect. That split follows AWS's own advice on the Solutions Architect exam page. Cloud Practitioner is AWS's Foundational exam: $100, 65 questions and 90 minutes. AWS says it is "designed for candidates new to Cloud who may not have an information technology (IT) background."
The two-step route costs $175 in exam fees if you pass both on the first try, compared with $150 for going straight to Solutions Architect. Our Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect comparison sets the two side by side, and our overview of AWS certifications lists every level.
AZ-104 vs AWS Solutions Architect: which should you pick?
Pick by the cloud your target employers use: this exam for AWS, AZ-104 for Azure, Microsoft's cloud service. AZ-104 is an administration exam and this one a design exam. Passing AZ-104 earns Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate and covers running Azure resources such as user identities, storage, computing and networks. AZ-104 takes 100 minutes and needs a scaled score of 700. Microsoft requires renewal every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, its training site, compared with three years for the AWS certification.
In October 2026, az-104 appeared in 105 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads on Adzuna; the jobs table gives the AWS count. Microsoft's exam page shows the AZ-104 fee for your country. Our AZ-104 page and Azure certifications overview cover the Microsoft side.
How long is it valid, and how do you renew it?
The AWS Solutions Architect – Associate certification is valid for three years. AWS's recertification page lists three ways to recertify, meaning renew it before it expires:
- Pass the latest version of the Solutions Architect – Associate exam. This adds three years from the day you pass, and the 50% voucher can pay half.
- Pass Solutions Architect – Professional. This also adds three years and renews the Associate automatically.
- Complete maintenance on AWS Skill Builder, which needs a paid Skill Builder subscription. This adds one year from the day you finish.
One rule shapes the timing: after you pass an exam, AWS does not let you take the same exam again for two years, unless AWS has released a new version of it. So plan a renewal by retake for the third year.

AWS Solutions Architect Associate salary: what can we tell you?
Pay follows the job title, the city and your experience rather than one exam, and we found no sourced salary figure for this certification; AWS publishes none on the pages we read. AWS's exam page cites a ranking instead: it says the certification "ranks among the top 10 certifications of 2023 in Skillsoft's IT Skills and Salary Report," a survey by a training company, with no pay figure on the page.
To find pay for the job you want, search for that job title in your own city, whether Bangalore, elsewhere in India, the UK or the US. For cloud work, our cloud-engineer pay and demand page is the place to start.
What do Reddit posters ask about AWS Solutions Architect?
Reddit posters ask about difficulty, study time, practice-test scores and courses; the difficulty and study time sections answer the first two. AWS publishes no target practice-test score, and a practice-test percentage does not translate into the scaled 720. We do not rate third-party courses or practice tests; check any of them against the four domains and the out-of-scope list in the exam guide.
What we did not check
- Pass rates: AWS publishes none on the pages we read.
- Whether the Official Practice Question Set and Official Practice Exam are free; we could not read the Skill Builder pages.
- The price of a Skill Builder subscription, and how long the discount voucher stays valid.
- Future versions of SAA-C03: finding no announcement does not rule one out.
- Microsoft's AZ-104 fee, salaries and third-party courses.
- Job ads in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Germany and Italy, and French DevOps-engineer ads, where we do not count this exam.

Questions people ask
Is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification worth it?
Yes, if you have some IT experience and want cloud-engineering work, meaning building and running systems on computing power rented over the internet. AWS (Amazon Web Services) charges $150 for the exam and recommends at least one year of hands-on experience (work you have done yourself) designing on AWS. In our October 2026 count of Adzuna, a job-ad search site, the phrase aws certified solutions architect appeared in at least 242 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads. Without IT work behind you, see the next question.
Is AWS Solutions Architect Associate worth it with no IT experience?
Not as a first exam. AWS (Amazon Web Services) says on the exam page that candidates without any IT work experience would benefit from first earning AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, its Foundational exam for people new to the cloud (computing power rented over the internet). Cloud Practitioner costs $100. After you pass, AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher (a code that cuts the price of your next AWS exam), so Solutions Architect – Associate then costs $75 instead of $150.
How much does the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam cost in total?
The exam costs $150 per attempt, and a failed attempt costs the full $150 again after a 14-day wait, according to AWS (Amazon Web Services). The certificate lasts three years. After a pass, AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher (a code for a cheaper future exam). Renewing once with it costs $75 more, so $225 for up to six years in total, or $300 without the voucher.
How hard is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam?
The SAA-C03 exam sits at the Associate level of AWS (Amazon Web Services), the level above its Foundational exams. The exam has 65 questions in 130 minutes; 50 count toward your score and 15 are unscored test questions that AWS does not identify. Scores are scaled from 100 to 1,000 (converted to that range, not a percentage of right answers). You need 720.
How long does it take to prepare for AWS Solutions Architect Associate?
People who posted about it on Reddit report a median (middle value) of two months of study, based on 15 first-person statements in the posts we collected; the middle half took about five weeks to three months. AWS (Amazon Web Services) gives no study-time figure for the Solutions Architect – Associate exam.
Can AWS Solutions Architect Associate get you a job?
The certification can support an application for cloud and DevOps jobs; no ad count can show that it gets someone hired. In our October 2026 count of Adzuna, a job-ad search site, the phrase aws certified solutions architect appeared in at least 242 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads and at least 66 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads. Cloud engineers build and run systems on rented internet computing power; DevOps engineers automate how software is built and released.
What is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate salary in the US, UK, India or Bangalore?
We have no sourced salary figure for AWS Solutions Architect – Associate holders in the US, the UK, India or Bangalore, and AWS (Amazon Web Services) publishes none on its exam pages. Pay follows the job title, the city and your experience. To price your own case, look up pay for the job you want in your city; for cloud work, our cloud-engineer role page is the place to start.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs Professional: what is the difference?
At AWS (Amazon Web Services), the Associate sits one level above Foundational, and the Professional is the advanced level. AWS lists at least one year of hands-on design experience for the Associate ($150, 65 questions, 130 minutes) and two or more years for the Professional ($300, 75 questions, 180 minutes). Passing the Professional automatically renews the Associate. The Professional exam is changing version: registration for SAP-C03 (the new exam code) opens October 27, 2026, and the last day for SAP-C02 (the current code) is November 16, 2026.
AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs Developer Associate: which should you take?
Take Solutions Architect – Associate if you want to design systems on AWS (Amazon Web Services), and Developer – Associate if you write code for applications that run on it. Both are Associate-level exams at $150, with 65 questions in 130 minutes. For Developer – Associate, AWS recommends one or more years of hands-on experience developing and maintaining applications on AWS. AWS says the Developer exam is being updated, so check its exam page for dates.
Should you take Cloud Practitioner before Solutions Architect Associate?
Only if you have no IT work experience, as AWS (Amazon Web Services) advises on its Solutions Architect – Associate exam page. Cloud Practitioner is AWS's Foundational exam for people new to the cloud (computing power rented over the internet), at $100 for 90 minutes. Passing both on the first try costs $175 in exam fees with the 50% discount voucher AWS gives after a pass, compared with $150 for going straight to Solutions Architect. Our comparison of the two exams has the details.
AZ-104 vs AWS Solutions Architect: which is better?
Choose by the cloud your target employers use. AZ-104 is Microsoft's exam for the Azure Administrator Associate certification, which covers running resources on Azure, Microsoft's cloud service; AWS Solutions Architect – Associate covers designing systems on AWS (Amazon Web Services). AZ-104 must be renewed every 12 months with a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, Microsoft's training site, while the AWS certification lasts three years. In our October 2026 count of Adzuna, a job-ad search site, AZ-104 appeared in 105 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads.
Does AWS Solutions Architect Associate expire?
Yes, three years after you earn it. AWS (Amazon Web Services) lets you recertify, meaning renew it before it expires, by passing the latest version of the exam or by passing Solutions Architect – Professional; each adds three years from the day you pass. A third option, maintenance on AWS Skill Builder (AWS's online training site), needs a paid subscription and adds one year. After you pass an exam, you cannot retake the same exam for two years unless AWS releases a new version of it, so plan an exam renewal for the third year.
Can you take the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam online?
Yes. Pearson VUE, the company that delivers exams for AWS (Amazon Web Services), offers the Solutions Architect – Associate exam at a test center or online with a remote proctor, a supervisor who watches you through your webcam. Plan for 130 minutes. If English is not your first language and you take the exam in English, you can ask once, before you register, for 30 extra minutes.
