How to become a system administrator without a degree: what 6,233 US job ads ask for

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

Yes, you can, though US government data lists a bachelor's degree as typical. How to become a system administrator without a degree: start in a help-desk job (first-line IT support) and learn Linux, named in 44% of the ads for US system administrators on Adzuna (a job-ad site) in October 2026.

None of the exams we name here requires a degree. CompTIA, the IT industry body behind two of them, lists no prerequisite for A+ (its help-desk certification) or Linux+ (its Linux admin exam), and Microsoft sets no formal prerequisite for AZ-104 (its Azure cloud admin exam). Each vendor recommends hands-on experience first, and a home lab (test computers you set up and break yourself) is a way to start gaining it.

Can you be a system administrator without a degree?

Yes, where an employer accepts experience and certifications in place of a degree. A system administrator (sysadmin) keeps an organization's servers, user accounts and networks running. The rule that applies to you is the education line in each job ad, and we do not count those lines, so read them yourself.

Do system administrators need a degree?

Official US sources list a bachelor's degree as typical, with room for shorter routes. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, the US government's labor-data agency) groups this job as network and computer systems administrators. Its Occupational Outlook Handbook, the government's career guide, gives a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education and lists no work experience in a related occupation. On the same page, BLS writes: "Others may require a postsecondary certificate or an associate's degree." A postsecondary certificate comes from a short college or vocational program after high school, and an associate's degree is a two-year college degree.

O*NET (an official US database of job profiles) asked survey respondents in this occupation how much education a new hire needs.

What respondents said a new hire needs (O*NET wording) Share of respondents
Associate's degree or other 2-year degree required 30%
Bachelor's degree required 27%
Post-secondary certificate required 20%

Source: O*NET OnLine, Network and Computer Systems Administrators, 15-1244.00, read October 12, 2026. The page shows only these three answers; the other respondents' answers are not shown there.

O*NET also places the job in Job Zone Three (its label: "Medium Preparation Needed"). Its note for that band says: "Most occupations in this zone require training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree." That note describes the whole band, not this job alone. All these figures come from government surveys, not from job ads.

What if an ad asks for a degree?

Check the exact wording before you skip it. An ad that asks for a degree or equivalent experience, or lists a degree as preferred, leaves room for a work history and certifications. BLS adds that "employers may require their network and computer systems administrators to be certified in the products they use," which is the gap a platform exam fills. If the ads you want set a firm degree rule, our guides to certificate vs degree and online degrees compare the two routes.

What skills do system-administrator ads ask for?

The three skills we count for this job are Linux, Active Directory and PowerShell. In October 2026, Linux appeared in 44% of the ads for US system administrators on Adzuna, Active Directory in 32% and PowerShell in 25%.

Skill What it is Share of US system-administrator ads, October 2026
Linux A free operating system family that runs servers, managed through typed commands 44%
Active Directory Microsoft's directory of a company's users, computers and permissions 32%
PowerShell Microsoft's command-line and scripting language for automating Windows and Azure tasks 25%

Source: Adzuna API, 6,233 US ads with system administrator in the job title, collected in October 2026, counted when the ad text contains the skill's name. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.

Our reading: learn Linux basics first, then build an Active Directory domain (a group of users and computers that Active Directory manages) and script it with PowerShell. If the ads you saved are mostly Windows jobs, start with Active Directory and PowerShell instead. In India, the same three skills were counted in 270 system-administrator ads in October 2026: Linux appeared in 38%, Active Directory in 21% and PowerShell in 16%. Read the India figures with care.

How to become a system administrator without a degree: the steps

Read the ads, get a support job, learn networking, build a home lab and then take one platform exam. The order follows the experience each vendor recommends before its exam.

  1. Today, your own sample: save 20 system-administrator ads for your area from any job site. In a spreadsheet, note for each ad the skills, the certifications, the education line and the experience line, word for word. This is your exercise, not our data, and it shows how local employers word their degree rules.
  2. First job, help desk: apply for help-desk or IT-support jobs, where you reset accounts, fix workstations and work through tickets (logged requests for help). CompTIA's certification for this work is A+: two exams, no prerequisite, with 12 months in a support role recommended. With no IT job yet, study for A+ while you apply: the 12 months is CompTIA's recommendation, not a rule for taking the exam. In October 2026, A+ appeared in 551 of 2,745 US IT-support ads on Adzuna; we do not count it in system-administrator ads. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate, a beginner course series on Coursera, is another way to learn the material: about three months at 10 hours a week, Google says, with no prior experience required.
  3. Next, networking: learn how IP addresses (each device's number on a network), switches (boxes that connect devices on one network), DNS (the system that turns names into addresses) and firewalls (rules that block or allow traffic) work. CompTIA Network+ covers this; CompTIA recommends A+ and 9 to 12 months as a junior network administrator or network support technician first. Cisco's CCNA, the networking certification from the router maker Cisco, is the vendor-specific alternative.
  4. Alongside, a home lab: run Linux and Windows virtual machines (simulated computers) at home and practice the tasks in our home-lab section. Ask your help-desk team for server tasks too, such as account changes in Active Directory or patching (installing updates).
  5. Then, one platform exam: pick the one for the servers in your 20 ads. CompTIA Linux+ recommends 12 months of hands-on work with Linux servers plus A+, Network+, Server+ (CompTIA's server exam) or comparable knowledge. For the Azure cloud, Microsoft expects AZ-104 candidates to know operating systems, networking, servers and virtualization and to have used PowerShell. In our view, the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), a hands-on exam, suits employers that run Red Hat Enterprise Linux; our system administrator certifications page compares it with the others.

Which certifications do system-administrator ads name?

We count five credential phrases in US system-administrator ads, and each is worded in its own style, so the rows are not a ranking. In October 2026, the phrase itil appeared in 7.8% of the ads for US system administrators on Adzuna.

Phrase searched Credential it stands for US system-administrator ads naming it, October 2026
comptia linux CompTIA Linux+ 94
az-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate 78
azure certification Any Microsoft Azure certification written this way 35
aws certified sysops The operations exam from Amazon Web Services (AWS), now called CloudOps Engineer 35
itil ITIL 4 Foundation (IT service management: how support and changes are run) 489

Source: Adzuna API, 6,233 US system-administrator ads collected in October 2026, matched by phrase; one ad can name more than one credential. Analysis: CertWorthIt.

Read each row as a minimum. An ad that names a credential in other words is missed, and itil can also match ads that ask for knowledge of ITIL processes rather than the certificate. None of the counts tells a required credential from a preferred one. For the full list by country, see our system administrator certifications page.

How long does it take to become a system administrator?

No source we read measures the whole path, so plan with the experience the vendors recommend. CompTIA recommends 12 months in a support role for A+, 9 to 12 months of network work for Network+ and 12 months with Linux servers for Linux+. Added back to back, those recommendations come to 33 to 36 months (12 + 9 to 12 + 12); that is our sum, not a measured time. The periods can overlap when one job gives you all three kinds of work, which shortens the total. For the learning alone, Google puts its beginner IT Support certificate at about three months at 10 hours a week.

The ads set their own experience lines, and we do not count them. One poster on r/sysadmin (a Reddit forum for system administrators) wrote: "Most sysadmin jobs that I see are primarily mid-level positions, and they usually ask for 3–5 years of system administration experience specifically" (r/sysadmin, September 2026). That is one person's reading of the ads, not a count; your own 20 ads will show the experience lines where you live.

How much does it cost to become a system administrator?

The exam fees on our path come to $1,346 with Linux+ or $1,112 with AZ-104, at CompTIA's and Microsoft's US prices. That is three certifications and four exams, because A+ takes two exams. CEUs in the renewal column are continuing education units, credits you earn through courses and other learning to renew a CompTIA certification.

Exam US price Valid for Renewal
CompTIA A+ (220-1201 and 220-1202) $274 per exam, two exams: $548 3 years $75 and 20 CEUs
CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) $399 3 years $150 and 30 CEUs
CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006) $399 3 years $150 and 50 CEUs
Microsoft AZ-104 Set by country; Associate exams typically $165 1 year Free online assessment
Path with Linux+ $548 + $399 + $399 = $1,346
Path with AZ-104 $548 + $399 + $165 = $1,112

Source: CompTIA certification and renewal-fee pages and the Microsoft Learn certification FAQ, checked October 3, 2026.

Microsoft's AZ-104 is proctored (taken under a supervisor's watch). CompTIA certifications stay valid for three years, so no CompTIA renewal falls due on a path that takes less than three years from your first pass. Training, retakes and tax are not in these totals. Microsoft's Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), a $99 exam that does not expire, is an optional first look at the cloud before AZ-104.

ITIL 4 Foundation costs $690 as an exam bundle at PeopleCert's US store (checked October 5, 2026), and it tests service-management processes, not server skills. Our reading: leave it for an employer to fund.

What should a home lab include?

A home lab needs one computer that can run virtual machines (simulated computers that share one physical machine) and a list of tasks to practice. One poster on r/ITCareerQuestions (a Reddit forum about IT careers) asked: "what homelab projects would you recommend to help get me out of help desk?" (r/ITCareerQuestions, September 2026).

Our suggestion, built from the skills we count:

  • Linux: install a free Linux distribution such as Ubuntu in a virtual machine. Create users and groups, set file permissions, install software, read the logs and schedule a nightly backup.
  • Active Directory: set up a Windows Server virtual machine as a domain controller (the server that runs Active Directory) and join a second machine to it. Check Microsoft's licensing terms for lab use first.
  • PowerShell: write a script that creates ten users from a CSV file (a plain-text spreadsheet), then one that reports which accounts have not signed in.
  • Recovery: break something on purpose, then restore it from your backup.

Write down what you did and what went wrong in a short log. An interviewer can ask about a lab you describe; a certificate number alone gives them less to test.

System administrator career change: where to start

Start at the help desk, even if you come from an unrelated job. In our reading, a system administrator career change from retail, the trades or office work starts with support work, because that is where you touch accounts, workstations and servers. One poster on r/sysadmin, who built a home lab while working outside IT, asked: "I'd love to hear from people who got into this line of work from similarly unrelated backgrounds" (r/sysadmin, September 2026).

If you already work in IT support, ask for server tasks at your current job and say in your resume which systems you touched. One commenter on r/ITCareerQuestions described moving from network technician to network administrator with this line: "No degree just certs." (r/ITCareerQuestions, August 2026). For courses aimed at people switching fields, see our guide to online courses for a career change.

What do Reddit posters say about getting in without a degree?

Two accounts from the Reddit posts we collected speak to the degree question and the step up from help desk. They are single accounts, not a survey.

  • On whether help desk needs a degree, one commenter wrote: "Nah you should be able to find Helpdesk without a degree" (r/ITCareerQuestions, August 2026). The same commenter said A+ and Network+ help, and that finding jobs after help desk will be difficult without a degree. Our suggestion for that step: apply to ads that say or equivalent experience, search junior and associate admin titles, and list on your resume each server task you did at the help desk.
  • In a thread asking whether lacking a bachelor's degree was holding the poster back, one commenter wrote: "I have no degree, no certs and have multiple 6 figure offers" (r/ITCareerQuestions, September 2026). Six figures means $100,000 a year or more; one person's offers say nothing about a typical outcome.

What does the BLS say about pay and openings?

BLS gives a median annual wage of $99,130 in May 2025 for network and computer systems administrators. A median means half earned more and half less. The figure covers the whole occupation at every level of experience, so it is not a starting salary.

BLS projects employment in the occupation to decline 4% from 2025 to 2035. It still projects about 13,400 openings a year on average, all from the need to replace workers who move to other occupations or leave the labor force, for example to retire. That is the government's projection, not a trend in our ad counts.

Which jobs sit next to system administrator?

Four neighboring jobs share the same base. IT support is the first job in our steps. Network engineers go deeper into routers and switches, cloud engineers run servers on platforms such as Azure and AWS, and DevOps engineers automate how software is built and shipped (see DevOps engineer without a degree). For Microsoft's cloud credentials in one place, see our page on the Azure certification program.

Security is another later step. CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years as a security or systems administrator before Security+, its entry-level security exam, so it fits after your first admin job.

Your next step is the first one in the plan: save 20 system-administrator ads for your area today and note the skills and the education line in each.

What we did not check

  • Degree requirements, "no degree required" wording, years of experience, salary, remote work and security clearance in job ads. We count only the skills Linux, Active Directory and PowerShell and named certificate phrases.
  • Hiring outcomes. Nothing here measures whether a course or certification leads to a job; the outcomes quoted come from single Reddit comments.
  • The current Coursera price of the Google IT Support Professional Certificate; check it on Coursera before you enroll.

Questions people ask

Can you be a system administrator without a degree?

Yes, where an employer accepts experience and certifications instead, though US government data lists a bachelor's degree as typical. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, the US labor-data agency) says some employers require a postsecondary certificate or an associate's degree (a two-year college degree). CertWorthIt does not count degree lines in job ads, so read the education line of each system-administrator ad you want. What US system-administrator ads did name in October 2026 was Linux, a free operating system family for servers: it appeared in 44% of the ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.

Do system administrators need a degree?

Official US sources list a bachelor's degree as typical, not as a rule for every job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) gives a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for network and computer systems administrators and lists no work experience in a related occupation (archived copy captured October 10, 2026). O*NET, an official US database of job profiles, asked survey respondents what education a new hire needs: 30% said an associate's degree or other two-year degree, 27% a bachelor's degree and 20% a postsecondary certificate. The O*NET page shows only these three answers.

What should I learn first to become a system administrator?

Learn Linux, then Active Directory and PowerShell, alongside CompTIA A+ and your first help-desk job; that order is our reading, not a rule. Linux, a free operating system family used on servers, appeared in 44% of the ads for US system administrators on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in October 2026. Active Directory (Microsoft's directory of a company's users and computers) appeared in 32%, and PowerShell (Microsoft's command-line and scripting language) in 25%.

Which certification should I get first without a degree?

For someone with no IT job yet, CompTIA A+, the help-desk certification: two exams at $274 each in the US, with no prerequisite (CompTIA, checked October 3, 2026). Study for it while you apply; CompTIA's recommended 12 months in support is not a rule for taking the exam. In October 2026, A+ appeared in 551 of 2,745 US IT-support ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site; we do not count A+ in system-administrator ads. Once you work in support, add Network+ (networking) and then one platform exam for the servers you run: CompTIA Linux+ or Microsoft's AZ-104 for the Azure cloud.

How much does it cost to become a system administrator?

On our suggested certification path, the US exam fees come to $1,346 with CompTIA Linux+ or $1,112 with Microsoft's AZ-104, at vendor prices checked October 3, 2026. The Linux+ route is four CompTIA exams: A+ (two exams, $548), Network+ ($399) and Linux+ ($399). The AZ-104 route swaps Linux+ for AZ-104, which Microsoft says typically costs $165 in the US. Training and retakes are extra. CompTIA certifications stay valid for three years, and AZ-104 is renewed every 12 months with a free online test.

How do I make a system administrator career change?

A system administrator career change from outside IT starts with a help-desk job (first-line IT support, where you reset accounts and fix computers). Study for CompTIA A+, build a home lab (test computers you set up yourself) with a Linux virtual machine (a simulated computer), and ask your support team for server tasks. One poster on the Reddit forum r/sysadmin who came from an unrelated career built a home lab and asked others how they made the move (September 2026); that is one account, not a survey.

How much do system administrators earn?

The median annual wage for US network and computer systems administrators was $99,130 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, the US labor-data agency). A median means half earned more and half less. The figure covers the whole occupation at every level of experience, so it is not a starting salary. CertWorthIt does not count salaries in job ads.

How long does it take to become a system administrator?

No source we read measures the whole path, so plan with the vendors' recommended experience. CompTIA recommends 12 months in an IT support role before A+, 9 to 12 months in a junior network role before Network+ and 12 months with Linux servers before Linux+ (CompTIA, checked October 3, 2026). Added back to back, that is 33 to 36 months by our sum, not a measured time; the periods can overlap when one job gives you all three kinds of work. One poster on the Reddit forum r/sysadmin wrote in September 2026 that the sysadmin ads they saw asked for three to five years of administration experience; that is one account, not a count.
