The answer to "is CompTIA Cloud+ worth it" is: only in narrow cases, such as a US system administrator moving to cloud work whose target ads name it. In October 2026, the phrase comptia cloud appeared in 19 of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. The exam costs $399 (CompTIA US store, October 3, 2026).

CompTIA Cloud+ is a cloud certification from CompTIA, an IT industry body that sets certification exams. It is vendor-neutral: it is not tied to one cloud provider such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure. You earn it by passing one exam, CV0-004, which CompTIA launched on September 24, 2024. A system administrator (sysadmin) sets up servers and keeps them running; a cloud engineer builds and runs systems on cloud platforms.

Verdict by situation:

  • Sysadmin with two to three years of work behind you, moving toward cloud: take Cloud+ if the ads you apply for name it, or if your employer uses more than one cloud provider.
  • Help-desk or support job, no server or cloud work yet: build hands-on practice first, on Linux and on a free-tier cloud account (a provider's no-cost starter allowance). Cloud+ comes later.
  • Your target employers run AWS or Azure: that provider's own exam is the more direct proof of the skills those jobs use. Our AWS SysOps page covers AWS's operations exam and our AZ-104 page covers Microsoft's Azure administrator exam. The overviews of AWS certifications and Azure certifications show each provider's full range.
  • No IT background at all: CompTIA recommends years of admin or cloud work before Cloud+, so start with CompTIA A+ (CompTIA's IT-support exam) and a support job. AWS Cloud Practitioner is AWS's exam for people new to the cloud.
  • Already hold A+, Network+ (CompTIA's networking exam) or Linux+ (its Linux exam): earning Cloud+ also renews those three, according to CompTIA's continuing education FAQ. It does not renew Security+, CompTIA's security exam.

Is Cloud+ worth it for a cloud or sysadmin job in the US?

It is worth it when the US ads you want name it, and our count measures exactly that: how often ads mention the certification, not who gets hired. Cloud+ is counted against two US job titles, system administrator and cloud engineer, with one search phrase for both: comptia cloud.

The match is approximate. It picks up ads that write CompTIA Cloud+ or CompTIA Cloud, but an ad with only Cloud+ or Cloud Plus slips through. Treat each figure as a rough count of ads naming CompTIA Cloud. Beside it, the table gives three skills counted in the same ads, so the certification sits next to the tools employers ask for. Linux is an operating system that runs on servers. Terraform is a tool that builds cloud infrastructure from code, and Kubernetes is software that runs and scales applications packed into containers.

For cloud engineers, the Adzuna count for October 2026 put the Cloud+ phrase in 16 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads.

We do not split required from preferred. An ad listing Cloud+ as one acceptable option weighs the same as one that insists on it. The methodology page describes the collection, and the role pages for system administrators and cloud engineers list the other credentials in those ads.

Our reading: get hands-on cloud and Linux practice first. Pay for the exam once a job ad you want names Cloud+, or once you need resume proof of cloud knowledge that is not tied to one provider.

Do employers outside the US ask for Cloud+?

Our figures outside the US are context only, and we give no country advice from them. In October 2026, comptia cloud appeared in none of the 1,150 Indian cloud-engineer ads and none of the 270 Indian system-administrator ads (Adzuna).

In the same month, the phrase appeared in none of the 2,921 German ads titled Systemadministrator, none of the 845 French ads titled administrateur système and none of the 332 Polish cloud-engineer ads (Adzuna). We search for the English phrase in every country, so a German, French or Polish ad that names the certification in other words is missed. For those three countries, read the counts as a lower bound.

How hard is CompTIA Cloud+?

Cloud+ is aimed at people who already do admin or cloud work: CompTIA suggests two to three years of hands-on experience as a systems administrator or cloud engineer. The suggestion is not a rule, and anyone can book the exam. CompTIA publishes no pass rate on the Cloud+ page, so the first-try pass rate is unknown to us.

Performance-based questions (PBQs) are short tasks you carry out instead of answers you pick. One poster on r/CompTIA, a Reddit forum for CompTIA exams, asked whether Cloud+ has PBQs or only multiple choice; CompTIA's page answers that the exam includes both. The 750 is a scaled score, meaning a converted score rather than a percentage of right answers.

The exam is split into six domains (topic areas), each with a weight on the CompTIA page. {{chart:cv0-004-domains}}

According to CompTIA's weights, cloud architecture is the largest domain at 23%. Deployment and security follow at 19% each, which puts 61% of the exam in those three. CompTIA gives 10% to DevOps fundamentals, the smallest domain, which covers the practices that join software development and IT operations, such as automated build and release.

Other r/CompTIA posters asked what to study with. We have not tested any course or book, so we recommend none. Whatever you pick should name the current code, CV0-004, and the tasks are easier to learn on a free or low-cost cloud account than from reading alone.

How much does CompTIA Cloud+ cost?

Expect $549 over three years for one exam and renewal. That is a $399 exam voucher from CompTIA's US store (a voucher is the prepaid code that books one exam attempt) plus a $150 fee for renewing through continuing education (CE).

Item US price (CompTIA)
Exam voucher, CV0-004 $399
Voucher with Retake Assurance $519
CE fee for the three-year renewal cycle, plus 50 CEUs $150
One voucher plus the CE fee, over three years $399 × 1 + $150 = $549
Two plain vouchers (one retake) plus the CE fee, over three years $399 × 2 + $150 = $948
Retake Assurance voucher plus the CE fee, over three years $519 × 1 + $150 = $669

Source: CompTIA US store, Cloud+ voucher prices read October 3, 2026; CompTIA CE fee page, read October 3, 2026.

Retake Assurance is CompTIA's name for the $519 voucher bundle that adds retake cover. We did not read its terms, so the $669 row assumes it covers one retake. For renewal, CompTIA asks for 50 CEUs (continuing education units, credits earned through training and other learning) during the three years. CertMaster CE, CompTIA's own renewal course, renews the certification in a single activity and has its own price.

Does Cloud+ renew your other CompTIA certifications?

It renews three of them. CompTIA's CE FAQ says Cloud+ sits in its continuing education program but outside the main ladder of certifications, and that earning or renewing Cloud+ renews only A+, Network+ and Linux+. A Security+ holder still has to renew Security+ on its own. If you already hold A+, Network+ or Linux+, the 50 CEUs you earn for Cloud+ therefore keep those certifications current too; we did not confirm whether that also removes their own CE fees. Our pages on Network+ and Linux+ cover those two exams.

The cost totals count CompTIA's US prices only. Courses and books are optional, each provider sets its own price, and none of them is included.

Cloud+ vs AWS CloudOps Engineer vs AZ-104: which should you take?

Take the exam that matches the cloud your target employers run: AWS CloudOps Engineer – Associate for AWS, AZ-104 for Azure, and Cloud+ when the ads name it or the work spans several providers. AWS CloudOps Engineer – Associate (exam SOA-C03) replaced AWS's SysOps Administrator exam, whose last exam day was September 29, 2025. AZ-104 is the exam for Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate.

Workloads, in AWS's wording, are the applications and systems an organization runs.

On October 3, 2026, AWS listed its exam fee at $150 and CompTIA sold the Cloud+ voucher for $399. AZ-104 is the only one of the three you renew every year, at no cost.

What salary can you expect with CompTIA Cloud+?

There is no Cloud+ salary figure we can stand behind: none of our sources measures holders' pay or a pay premium from the certification, and CertWorthIt measures no such premium either.

What exists is pay for whole occupations, from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the federal labor-statistics agency. It puts the median annual wage at $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators and at $134,050 for computer network architects (a different occupation with its own requirements), both in May 2025. Half the workers in an occupation earn above its median and half below. Both figures include all workers in the job, certified or not, so they describe the occupation rather than Cloud+.

Is CompTIA Cloud+ worth it? What Reddit users say

The two comments quoted here would rather see you take a cloud provider's own exam. Treat them as personal opinions from people who chose to post, not as a survey.

A commenter on r/CompTIA who holds Cloud+ and works in cloud wrote: "Can confirm, cloud+ is kind of useless" (r/CompTIA). The same commenter suggested an AWS or Azure certification instead, for practical skills. Another thread asked why no one on the forum mentions the Cloud+ certification. There, a second commenter wrote: "You can just do an azure, aws, or gcp cert for half the price of a CompTIA one and it actual teaches the tools" (r/CompTIA). GCP is Google Cloud Platform.

In the same thread, a reply with a negative score argued the opposite, that Cloud+ cannot be worthless if it appears in job requirements (r/CompTIA). A sysadmin with nine years of work and training money asked whether Cloud+ or CySA+ (CompTIA's cybersecurity analyst exam) should follow Network+ and Security+ (r/CompTIA).

Our data can test only one part of these views. The Adzuna count for October 2026 found the Cloud+ phrase in 19 of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads, and an ad naming a certification says nothing about whether the exam teaches practical skills.

What should you do first?

Collect 20 US job ads for the work you are after and mark the credentials each one names: CompTIA Cloud+, an AWS exam, AZ-104, or skills only, such as Linux and Terraform. With no target job yet, run a job-site search for "system administrator" or "cloud engineer" near you and use 20 of those results. Then:

  1. No server or cloud work yet: get hands-on practice first, because CompTIA's suggested experience assumes admin or cloud work. If you also lack IT basics, start with A+ or Network+.
  2. Ads that name CompTIA Cloud+: study for CV0-004, and buy the $399 voucher once you can do the exam's tasks on a free cloud account without notes.
  3. AWS or Azure named in the ads: compare our AWS SysOps and AZ-104 pages before you pick.
  4. Only skills named, such as Linux or Terraform: practice those skills first; Cloud+ can wait.
  5. Later interest in infrastructure as code (building servers and networks from configuration files): our Terraform page covers the Terraform certification.

What we did not check

  • Cloud+ pass rates and study time: CompTIA publishes no pass rate, and too few Reddit posters reported their study time.
  • CompTIA's CV0-004 exam objectives document: the domain weights come from the Cloud+ certification page.
  • What CertMaster CE costs, and Cloud+ prices outside the US store.
  • How AWS CloudOps Engineer – Associate is renewed.
  • Whether a CV0-004 pass stays valid for its full three years after the exam retires; check CompTIA's Cloud+ page before you buy.
  • Whether renewing Cloud+ also removes the CE fees for A+, Network+ or Linux+.
  • Which study materials work: we tested no course or book.
  • Whether an ad requires the certification or only prefers it.

Questions people ask

Is CompTIA Cloud+ worth it, according to Reddit?

The two Reddit comments we quote on CompTIA Cloud+ prefer a cloud provider's own exam, a third reply disagrees, and all are opinions, not a survey. On r/CompTIA, a Reddit forum for CompTIA exams, one commenter who holds Cloud+ called it kind of useless and suggested an AWS or Azure certification instead (AWS and Azure are Amazon's and Microsoft's cloud platforms). Our own count is narrower: in October 2026, the phrase comptia cloud appeared in 19 of the 6,233 US system-administrator ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Read the ads for the jobs you want before you pay the $399 exam fee.

How long does it take to get CompTIA Cloud+?

We have no reliable study-time figure for CompTIA Cloud+: CompTIA's page gives none, and too few Reddit posters reported their study time for us to quote one. Cloud+ takes one exam, CV0-004, with up to 90 questions in 90 minutes. CompTIA recommends, but does not require, two to three years of hands-on work as a systems administrator or cloud engineer before it (CompTIA Cloud+ page, checked October 12, 2026).

What is the Cloud+ salary?

No source we accept gives a salary for CompTIA Cloud+ holders, and CertWorthIt measures no pay premium for the certification. The closest official US figures cover whole occupations: the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) gives a median annual wage of $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators and $134,050 for computer network architects, both for May 2025. A median means half earned more and half less, with or without Cloud+.

Does the CompTIA Cloud+ exam have performance-based questions?

Yes. CompTIA's Cloud+ page, checked October 12, 2026, says the CV0-004 exam has up to 90 questions, including multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Performance-based questions (PBQs) are short tasks you carry out instead of answers you pick. You have 90 minutes and need 750 on a scale of 100 to 900 to pass.

Does CompTIA Cloud+ renew Security+?

No. CompTIA's continuing education FAQ, read October 12, 2026, says that earning or renewing Cloud+ renews only A+ (CompTIA's IT-support exam), Network+ (its networking exam) and Linux+ (its Linux exam). Security+, CompTIA's security exam, needs its own renewal. Cloud+ itself lasts three years; renewing it through continuing education (CE) takes 50 continuing education units (CEUs, credits for training and other learning) plus a $150 CE fee.
