The Terraform Associate, the foundational exam from Terraform's maker HashiCorp, is worth it if the jobs you want use Terraform, a tool that builds cloud servers and networks from code files. In October 2026, the phrase terraform associate appeared in 40 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. The exam costs US$70.50.

Ads that write only "HashiCorp Certified" or "Terraform certification" are not in that count, so every certification count on this page is a minimum. How we count job ads.

Is Terraform Associate worth it in 2026?

Yes for three groups: cloud engineers and DevOps engineers whose teams write Terraform, and system administrators moving into infrastructure as code. Infrastructure as code means setting up servers and networks through code files instead of clicking through a web console. DevOps is a way of working in which one team builds, releases and runs software.

Terraform Associate (004) is HashiCorp's foundational Terraform certification: a one-hour, multiple-choice exam in English, taken online while a remote supervisor watches you (HashiCorp calls this online proctored). HashiCorp has been part of IBM since IBM completed its purchase of the company on February 27, 2025.

HashiCorp lists two prerequisites: basic terminal skills and an understanding of on-premises and cloud architecture. A terminal is a text window where you type commands; on-premises means servers a company runs in its own building, as opposed to servers it rents from a cloud provider. Professional experience is recommended, not required.

The verdict is our judgment from what the exam covers, its price and our job-ad counts. Our counts do not show that holding the certification brings more interviews or higher pay.

A first step that works without a target job: install Terraform and follow HashiCorp's free Terraform Associate learning path on HashiCorp Developer, its documentation site. Build one small cloud resource with it and delete it again. Then search a job board for cloud-engineer or DevOps-engineer ads in your city and note whether they name the tool, the certification or neither. Use what you find. When the ads name the certification, book the exam. When they name only the tool, build the small project first and treat the exam as optional. When they name neither, look at which other tools those ads ask for before you spend on any exam.

How often do job ads name the Terraform Associate?

In October 2026, the phrase terraform associate was in 40 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads and in 24 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads (Adzuna).

The word terraform on its own is a separate count. It measures how often ads ask for the tool, and says nothing about the certification. Here are both counts for the same month and job titles, side by side:

Job ads on Adzuna, October 2026 Certification: phrase terraform associate Tool: word terraform
US cloud engineer 40 of the 7,726 ads 20% of the ads
US DevOps engineer 24 of the 3,861 ads 43% of the ads
India DevOps engineer 1.3% of the ads 52% of the ads
UK DevOps engineer 2% of the ads 64% of the ads

Source: Adzuna job ads, October 2026; analysis: CertWorthIt.

Read the two columns as answers to different questions. The left column asks whether an ad names the certification; the right column asks whether it names the tool. If your target ads name the tool, the exam is one way to show you know it, and a project you can walk through in an interview is another.

In India, the phrase terraform associate appeared in 9 of the 1,150 cloud-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).

In the UK, the Terraform Associate name appeared in 2 of the 475 cloud-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).

In Poland, the Terraform Associate name was in 6 of the 332 cloud-engineer ads and in 3 of the 483 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).

In France, the Terraform Associate name was in 3 of the 745 DevOps-engineer ads and in none of the 340 cloud-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).

In Germany, the Terraform Associate name was in one of the 1,077 DevOps-engineer ads and in none of the 1,160 cloud-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).

Counts this small can change when a single employer posts several ads, so read the non-US rows with care. The count matches only the English words terraform associate.

Our DevOps-engineer page and cloud-engineer page list the other certificates and tools those ads name in each country.

Is Terraform Associate worth it? What Reddit posters say

In the Reddit posts we collected, people disagreed on how much weight the Terraform Associate carries on its own. Each view below comes from a single post or comment, linked so you can read it in full.

A commenter on a certification-path thread called it "just a bit of a resume filler in my opinion" next to the other exams in that plan. Those covered AWS (Amazon's cloud), Kubernetes (software that runs apps across groups of servers) and security (r/AWSCertifications). In r/ccna, a commenter told someone aiming for network administration that network automation projects with Terraform would impress hiring managers and suggested "maybe even" the Terraform Associate (r/ccna).

A poster with ten years in IT operations, who holds the Terraform Associate and cloud certifications from Microsoft and Google, wrote of getting no traction for DevOps and platform-engineering roles. That poster described their experience as mostly keeping existing systems running rather than building new ones. A parent of a two-year-old wrote that they earned the Terraform Associate, two Kubernetes exams and an AWS exam over two years, studying in short daily sessions, to be in a stronger position to negotiate pay or change employers.

Is the Terraform Associate enough for a first cloud job?

The certification alone is a thin case for a first cloud job; pair it with something you built. A 23-year-old student who was studying for the Terraform Associate and an AWS exam at the same time asked whether certifications lead to interviews and which projects employers look for.

Our data cannot answer that, so here is our reasoning. The exam shows you know Terraform's commands and workflow. An interviewer will also ask what you set up, what broke and how you fixed it. One small project, with its code saved in a public Git repository (Git is a tool that keeps the history of code files), gives you that answer.

How hard is the Terraform Associate?

It is HashiCorp's foundational level, and the exam is multiple choice rather than hands-on. HashiCorp says it does not publish its passing score, and we found no pass rate on its pages, so difficulty cannot be measured directly.

The format, from HashiCorp's exam page:

  • One hour of multiple-choice questions.
  • Online proctored: a remote supervisor watches you through the session.
  • English only.
  • Version 004, which tests Terraform 1.12.

HashiCorp's exam content list for version 004 has eight sections:

Section Topic
1 Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform
2 Terraform fundamentals
3 Core Terraform workflow
4 Terraform configuration
5 Terraform modules
6 Terraform state management
7 Maintain infrastructure with Terraform
8 HCP Terraform

Source: HashiCorp Developer, Terraform Associate (004) exam content list.

Three of those names need a gloss. Modules are reusable packages of Terraform code. State is the record of what Terraform has built, kept in a state file. HCP Terraform is HashiCorp's hosted service for running Terraform as a team.

One poster who uses Terraform at work, though not daily, wrote that they scored 3 out of 6 on a practice quiz about state, import and drift. Import means bringing resources that already exist under Terraform's control; drift is when the real infrastructure no longer matches the code.

What changed from version 003 to 004?

HashiCorp's 004 study guide lists four new topics for people who prepared with 003 material:

  • 4f: the depends_on meta-argument, which sets the order Terraform builds resources in, and the create_before_destroy lifecycle setting, which builds a replacement before removing the old resource.
  • 4g: validating configuration with custom conditions, tests you write for values in your configuration, such as an error when an input is invalid.
  • 4h: ephemeral values and write-only arguments, values Terraform uses without saving them in its state file.
  • 8c: HCP Terraform workspaces and projects, the ways HCP Terraform groups configurations.

How long does it take to get the Terraform Associate?

We have no reliable figure. The Reddit posts we collected hold too few study-time statements to report a typical time.

Two single posts give a rough idea. One commenter wrote that it is "Easy to get in 2-4 weeks if you want it though" for someone already planning AWS and Kubernetes exams (r/AWSCertifications). A student in Barcelona doing an internship on live company systems wrote that they earned it and the AWS Solutions Architect Associate during one summer.

How to prepare for the Terraform Associate

HashiCorp Developer offers three free study pages for version 004, open without an account: a study guide (a learning path through tutorials), the exam content list and sample questions. A plan that uses only those:

  1. Read the eight sections of the exam content list and note what you cannot yet do.
  2. Work through the study guide, running each step on a small project of your own.
  3. Answer the sample questions, then go back to every section where you missed one.

Before you buy a paid course or practice exam, check it against the eight sections.

How much does the Terraform Associate cost?

HashiCorp charges US$70.50 per exam appointment, plus locally applicable taxes and fees, and no free retake is included. Each retake is a new paid appointment.

HashiCorp's retake rules: you wait 7 days between attempts, and you can attempt an exam no more than 4 times in any 365-day period. A passed exam cannot be taken again until the credential expires.

The sums below leave out taxes and assume today's price for every attempt and the renewal:

  • Pass on the first try and renew once by passing again: $70.50 now plus $70.50 at renewal, for a total of $141. That keeps the credential valid for about four years.
  • Fail once, pass on the second attempt and renew once: two attempts at $70.50 and one renewal at $70.50, for a total of $211.50 over the same period.
What the Terraform Associate certification costs: required and optional fees (USD)
The required Terraform Associate fees add up to $71; with the optional items shown it is $212.

Does the Terraform Associate expire?

Yes, two years after you earn it. Every renewal route HashiCorp lists is an exam, and its pages state no renewal fee, so we count each renewal as one exam appointment.

You can renew from 18 months after earning the credential, in its last six months. HashiCorp lists three ways: pass the 004 Associate exam again (US$70.50), pass the Authoring and Operations Advanced exam (US$295) or pass the Infrastructure Engineer Professional exam. Each extends the expiration date. The Professional exam was not yet open for booking when we checked (date in Sources), so the two routes you can book today are the Associate and the Advanced exam; the cost sums above use the cheaper one. If the credential has already expired, you pass the current exam to get a new one.

Terraform Associate or something else: which should you take?

Pick the exam that matches the tools your target employers name. Our job-ad counts cannot rank the Terraform Associate against other certifications, because each is counted by a different phrase.

A poster who had passed an AWS exam asked whether to focus on the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), the Terraform Associate or AWS DevOps Pro (AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional). Here are the three exams' vendor facts:

Exam Vendor Length Exam price
Terraform Associate (004) HashiCorp 1 hour, multiple choice US$70.50, no retake included
CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) Linux Foundation 2 hours of hands-on tasks US$445, one retake included
AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional AWS (Amazon Web Services) 180 minutes US$300

Source: each vendor's exam page; prices as read: HashiCorp October 12, 2026; Linux Foundation October 11, 2026; AWS October 5, 2026.

A rule of thumb by what your target ads name:

  • Only Terraform: take the Terraform Associate.
  • Only Kubernetes: take the CKA.
  • Only AWS: follow the AWS path in AWS certifications alongside the Terraform Associate.
  • Both Terraform and Kubernetes: the Terraform Associate is the cheaper and shorter exam, so it is a low-cost place to start.

AWS DevOps Pro is a professional-level AWS exam, a step above AWS's associate-level exams.

Terraform Associate vs CKA

The CKA tests running Kubernetes through live tasks in a terminal. The Terraform Associate tests one tool for building infrastructure, through multiple-choice questions. Our CKA page covers the choice in its section on Terraform Associate vs CKA.

Terraform Associate vs Professional

HashiCorp offers Terraform certifications at three levels. The Associate is the foundational one; HashiCorp strongly recommends it, or equivalent experience, before either higher exam.

Level Format Length Terraform version tested Price
Terraform Associate (004) Multiple choice, online proctored 1 hour 1.12 US$70.50, no free retake
Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional Multiple choice 90 minutes 1.15 Listed as "Coming soon"; booking not open yet
Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced Lab-based scenarios plus multiple choice, in an AWS or Azure version 4 hours with one 15-minute break 1.6 US$295, free retake included

Source: HashiCorp certification pages, read October 12, 2026.

"Terraform version tested" is the release of the tool each exam is written for; the three exams were written at different times, so the numbers differ. HashiCorp says the Professional exam needs experience with Terraform in production, meaning live systems a business depends on, and its page said registration would open soon when we checked. Lab-based means you work in a real environment rather than answer questions about it. Azure is Microsoft's cloud.

AWS certifications alongside the Terraform Associate

Terraform builds infrastructure on clouds such as AWS, so the two kinds of certification can go together. Our AWS certifications overview covers the full AWS path, including the DevOps Engineer – Professional exam. Start with the AWS Cloud Practitioner page if you are new to cloud work, or the AWS Solutions Architect Associate page if you already build on AWS.

What is the Terraform Associate salary?

We do not publish a Terraform Associate salary figure. We found no source that measures what the certification adds to pay, and people who hold it work in different jobs and countries.

For a job-title reference in the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, the US government's labor-statistics agency) puts the median annual wage for network and computer systems administrators at $99,130 in May 2025. A median is the middle value: half earn more, half less. That figure covers a job title, not Terraform or the certification.

Look up the job you want, not the certificate: our DevOps-engineer page and cloud-engineer page cover the two jobs in which we count the Terraform Associate.

Who makes Terraform, and what is OpenTofu?

HashiCorp makes Terraform and runs the exam, and IBM completed its acquisition of HashiCorp in February 2025 (IBM newsroom). On August 10, 2023, HashiCorp announced that future releases of its products would move from the Mozilla Public License 2.0 to the Business Source License v1.1 (BSL), both software licenses. HashiCorp said its APIs, SDKs and almost all other libraries (interfaces and code kits that other programs use to work with its products) would stay under the Mozilla license.

OpenTofu is a fork of Terraform, a separate copy of the code developed by a different group, now hosted by the Linux Foundation. Its FAQ says it was created in response to that license change. The HashiCorp exam tests Terraform 1.12, not OpenTofu.

What we did not check

  • The number of questions on the exam: HashiCorp's pages we read do not state it.
  • The date version 004 replaced 003: we found no date on HashiCorp's own pages.
  • The Infrastructure Engineer Professional price: HashiCorp lists it as Coming soon.
  • Study time: the Reddit posts we collected hold too little to report.
  • Rules for rescheduling or canceling an exam booking, and taxes by country.
  • Third-party courses and practice exams: we do not test or rate them.
  • How far OpenTofu skills carry over to the Terraform exam.
  • What the license terms allow: we report the change, not its legal meaning.

Questions people ask

Is the HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification worth it?

The Terraform Associate is worth it if the jobs you want use Terraform, a tool from HashiCorp that builds cloud servers and networks from code files. In October 2026, the phrase terraform associate appeared in 40 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Ads that write only "HashiCorp Certified" are not in that count, so it is a minimum. The word terraform alone, a separate count for the tool and not the exam, appeared in 20% of the ads for US cloud engineers that month. The exam costs US$70.50 plus local taxes (HashiCorp, read October 12, 2026).

Is HashiCorp Terraform Associate worth it for a beginner?

The HashiCorp Terraform Associate is a foundational exam, and HashiCorp lists basic terminal skills (typing commands in a text window) and an understanding of on-premises and cloud architecture as prerequisites; professional experience is recommended, not required. In an interview the exam alone is a thin case, so pair it with a small project you built with Terraform, a tool that sets up servers and networks from code files.

How hard is the Terraform Associate exam?

The Terraform Associate is HashiCorp's foundational Terraform exam: one hour of multiple-choice questions, in English, taken online while a remote supervisor watches you (online proctored). HashiCorp does not publish its passing score, and we found no pass rate on its pages, so difficulty cannot be measured directly. The current version, 004, tests Terraform 1.12, the tool that builds cloud servers and networks from code files.

How much does the Terraform Associate cost?

The Terraform Associate exam costs US$70.50 per attempt, plus local taxes and fees, and no free retake is included (HashiCorp). The credential lasts two years, and renewing means passing an exam again. If you pass on the first try and renew once at today's price, you pay $70.50 plus $70.50, for a total of $141 over about four years. One failed attempt adds another $70.50, for a total of $211.50.

How does Terraform Associate renewal work?

The HashiCorp Terraform Associate expires two years after you earn it. You can renew from 18 months after earning it, in the last six months, by passing the current Associate exam (version 004, US$70.50) again or the Authoring and Operations Advanced exam (US$295); each extends the expiration date. A third route, the Infrastructure Engineer Professional exam, was not yet open for booking on October 12, 2026. If the credential has already expired, you pass the current exam to get a new one. Every renewal route HashiCorp lists is an exam, and its pages state no renewal fee, so we count a renewal as one exam appointment.

What is the HashiCorp Terraform Associate salary?

We do not publish a HashiCorp Terraform Associate salary, because we found no source that measures what the certification adds to pay. Pay follows the job title, the country and your experience. Our DevOps-engineer and cloud-engineer role pages cover the two jobs in which we count the Terraform Associate; DevOps engineers work on teams that build, release and run software.

Should I take the Terraform Associate, the CKA or AWS DevOps Pro?

Pick the exam that matches the tools your target job ads name. The Terraform Associate (HashiCorp) tests Terraform, a tool that builds infrastructure from code files, and costs US$70.50. The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator, Linux Foundation) is a hands-on exam on Kubernetes, software that runs apps across groups of servers, and costs US$445. AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional is Amazon's advanced DevOps exam and costs US$300. Our job-ad counts cannot rank the three, because each is counted by a different phrase.
