Is the CKA certification worth it?
36 of 7,726 cloud engineer job ads in the United States name the CKA (Adzuna, October 2026)
Passing the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is worth it if you run Kubernetes, software that runs apps across groups of servers, or want a DevOps job (one team builds, releases and runs software). In October 2026, the phrase certified kubernetes administrator appeared in 53 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.
Ads that write only "CKA" are not in that count, so every CKA count on this page is a minimum. How we count job ads.

Is CKA worth it in 2026?
Yes for two groups: system administrators and DevOps engineers whose employers run Kubernetes, and cloud engineers who want a credential showing they can complete Kubernetes operating tasks under exam conditions. If you have not used a Linux command line (a text window where you type commands) before, install Ubuntu (a free version of Linux) in a virtual machine and practice moving between folders, editing files and starting services, or take the KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate, a multiple-choice beginner exam) described in CKA vs KCNA.
The CKA is a certification from the Linux Foundation and the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation). The Linux Foundation lists no prerequisites. The exam tests whether you can set up, run and repair a cluster, a group of servers that Kubernetes runs as one system.
That verdict is our judgment from what the exam covers and from our job-ad counts. Our counts do not show that holding the CKA brings more interviews or higher pay.
A first step that works even without a target job: search a job board for DevOps-engineer or cloud-engineer ads in your city and note how many name Kubernetes. If they do, the CKA tests the work those ads describe. If they mostly name one cloud provider instead, a cloud certification may fit better; see CKA or something else.
How often do job ads name the CKA?
In October 2026, the phrase certified kubernetes administrator appeared in 53 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads and in 36 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads (Adzuna).
Kubernetes as a skill is a separate count. Of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna), the word kubernetes appeared in 47%. Read the two counts side by side: one counts the tool name, the other the full certification title.
In the UK, the phrase appeared in 7 of the 555 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
In India, the phrase appeared in 25 of the 1,549 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). The same month, the phrase appeared in 7 of the 1,150 Indian cloud-engineer ads.
In Germany, the English phrase appeared in 11 of the 1,160 cloud-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). The phrase appeared in 2 of the 1,077 German DevOps-engineer ads that month.
In France, the phrase appeared in 3 of the 745 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). In Poland, the phrase appeared in 2 of the 483 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
Outside the US, these counts are small, so one employer posting several ads can move them from month to month; read them with care. Ads written in German, French or Polish may also describe the certification in their own words, which the English phrase does not catch.
Our DevOps-engineer page and cloud-engineer page show which other certificates and tools those ads name in each country.
Is CKA worth it? What Reddit posters say
In the Reddit posts we collected, posters split on what the CKA does for a job search, and two stressed how much hands-on practice it takes. Each view below comes from a single post or comment, linked so you can read it in full.
One poster wrote that the Kubernetes exams are "far harder and more rigorous than the Azure/AWS/GCP certs" (r/kubernetes), meaning the exams for Microsoft's, Amazon's and Google's cloud platforms. Another said the CKA and the related CKAD and CKS exams (for application developers and for security) "required much more hands-on practice with labs, mock exams, and repeated work on weaker areas" (r/devops).
On the job side, a commenter put the objection this way: "the cert isn't the problem, treating it as a proxy for hands-on ability is." (r/kubernetes). A poster who paid for the exam out of savings wrote that they did not expect it to have a significant impact. In a thread about an engineer with eight years of DevOps work, a commenter advised getting the CKA and leading with Linux and configuration-as-code experience (setting up servers through code files) in interviews.

Is the CKA enough for an entry-level Kubernetes job?
The certification alone is a thin case for a first Kubernetes job; pair it with something you built. One poster asked whether the CKA's knowledge is enough for an entry-level Kubernetes role or whether employers expect more hands-on experience.
Our data cannot answer this, so here is our reasoning. The CKA proves you could complete set tasks under exam conditions. An interviewer will also ask what you set up, broke and repaired. A small cluster you set up yourself, with notes on what went wrong, gives you that story.
How hard is the CKA?
Hard if you have not worked at a Linux command line, because the CKA is a performance-based exam: you solve live tasks rather than pick answers. We found no pass rate on the Linux Foundation's pages, so difficulty cannot be measured directly.
The format, from the Linux Foundation's exam page and FAQ:
- Two hours of tasks at a command line on running Kubernetes clusters. Kubernetes is controlled with kubectl, its command-line tool.
- A passing score of 66%.
- Online and proctored: a remote supervisor watches you through the session.
- Tasks in English, Simplified Chinese or Japanese.
- During the exam you may open the official Kubernetes documentation and blog and the Helm documentation (Helm installs packaged apps on Kubernetes). Searching inside kubernetes.io/docs is allowed; opening external search results is not.
The curriculum splits the exam into five domains (topic areas):
| Domain | Weight on the exam |
|---|---|
| Troubleshooting | 30% |
| Cluster Architecture, Installation and Configuration | 25% |
| Services and Networking | 20% |
| Workloads and Scheduling | 15% |
| Storage | 10% |
Source: CNCF curriculum repository on GitHub, current CKA curriculum.
Troubleshooting, finding and fixing faults in a running cluster, carries the largest weight. That is a skill a free local practice cluster on your own laptop can train.

How long does it take to get the CKA?
We have no reliable figure. Fewer than ten people in the Reddit posts and comments we collected stated how long they studied for the CKA, too few to report as a typical time.
Your time depends on what you already know. Someone who runs Linux servers daily starts from the command line; a first-time learner has to learn that and Kubernetes together.

How to prepare for the CKA
A poster asked how others prepared and passed. A practical plan, using only official materials:
- Read the five domains in the CNCF curriculum and list the tasks you cannot yet do.
- Practice those tasks on a cluster of your own, using only the documentation you may open in the exam.
- Use the two Killer.sh sessions that come with the exam. Killer.sh is a practice simulator that copies the real exam environment, and each session gives 36 hours of access from the time you activate it.
A poster who passed wrote that one paid video course plus the Killer.sh sessions that come with the exam fee was enough. We do not test or rate third-party courses, so check any course against the five domains above.
How much does the CKA cost?
The exam alone costs US$445 at the Linux Foundation. That price includes 12 months of exam eligibility, one retake if you fail, and two Killer.sh simulator sessions.
| Option | Price | What the Linux Foundation lists |
|---|---|---|
| Exam only | US$445 | Exam, one retake, two Killer.sh sessions, 12 months of eligibility |
| Exam + THRIVE-ONE annual subscription | US$625 | Exam plus one year of the Linux Foundation's training subscription |
| Exam + Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258) | US$645 | Exam plus the official course |

The certification lasts two years, and renewing it means passing the exam again. We found no separate renewal fee, so the sums below assume you buy the exam again at today's exam-only price.
- Exam only, renewed once: $445 now plus $445 two years later, for a total of $890 over four years.
- Course bundle, renewed once with the exam only: $645 plus $445, for a total of $1,090 over four years.
The included retake covers one failed attempt. The Linux Foundation says it offers the retake "regardless of why" a candidate did not pass, when the candidate is eligible.
Does the CKA expire?
Yes, after two years. The Linux Foundation's FAQ says CKA, CKAD and CKS certifications are valid for two years; a CKA earned before April 1, 2024, is valid for three.
To renew, you take and pass the exam again, and the new certification runs two years from that pass. The Linux Foundation lists no renewal through continuing-education credits as of October 11, 2026 (points earned from courses or events), so the cost of keeping the CKA is the exam fee and the practice time each cycle.

CKA or something else: which should you take?
Pick the exam that matches the systems your target employers run. Our counts cannot rank the CKA against other certifications, because each is counted by a different phrase.
A poster on r/AWSCertifications asked whether to focus on the CKA, Terraform Associate (a Terraform tool exam) or AWS DevOps Pro (Amazon's advanced DevOps exam). Each answer below gives the main difference in plain words.
CKA vs CKS
The CKA comes first. The CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist) covers securing Kubernetes, and the Linux Foundation requires a passed CKA before you attempt it. Its passing score is 67%.
A poster who had just passed the CKA asked whether to start the CKS while the material was fresh. A reply in that thread called the CKS "harder than the CKA, I'd say go for it if you have the time" (r/devops).
CKA vs KCNA
The KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate) is the foundational exam: multiple-choice questions on Kubernetes basics, taken online with a supervisor watching. The CKA is hands-on. Take the KCNA if you want a first, lower-stakes exam; go straight to the CKA if you already work at a Linux command line.
CKA vs RHCSA
The RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) tests Linux administration on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a business version of Linux; the CKA tests running Kubernetes, which itself runs on Linux, so Linux skills help with both.
Terraform Associate vs CKA
Terraform Associate is the certification from HashiCorp, the company behind Terraform, for that tool. Terraform is a tool that sets up cloud servers and networks from code files. It suits you if your target ads name Terraform; the CKA suits you if they name Kubernetes.
CKA vs CKAD
The CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) is for people who build apps that run on Kubernetes; the CKA is for people who run the clusters. Our CKA vs CKAD comparison covers the choice in full.
AWS certifications instead of the CKA
If your target employers run AWS and do not mention Kubernetes, an AWS certification may fit better. Our AWS certifications overview covers the full path, including AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, the exam that poster asked about. Start with the AWS Cloud Practitioner page if you are new to cloud work, or the AWS Solutions Architect Associate page if you already build on AWS.
What is the CKA salary?
We do not publish a CKA salary figure. We found no source that measures what the Certified Kubernetes Administrator certification adds to pay, and people who hold it work in different jobs and countries.
Pay follows the job title and the country. Look up the job you want, not the certificate: our DevOps-engineer page and cloud-engineer page cover the two jobs in which we count the CKA.

What we did not check
- A CKA pass rate: none found on the Linux Foundation's pages.
- Study time: fewer than ten posters stated theirs.
- Rules and hour limits for rescheduling or canceling an exam booking.
- Free exam vouchers: one poster asked about programs that give the CKA free; we did not check voucher or scholarship programs.
- Fees and formats of the RHCSA and Terraform Associate.
- Questions about one person's own career situation, such as choosing a specialty or a job market we do not count: we cannot answer those from our data.

Questions people ask
Is the CKA certification worth it?
The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is worth it if you run Kubernetes, which spreads apps over a cluster (a group of servers that work as one), or want a DevOps job, where one team builds, releases and runs software. In October 2026, the phrase certified kubernetes administrator appeared in 53 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Ads that write only "CKA" are not in that count. The exam-only price is US$445 (Linux Foundation, read October 11, 2026).
Is CKA still worth it?
Yes, the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) still fits people who run Kubernetes, a system for running apps on many servers at once. In October 2026, the phrase certified kubernetes administrator appeared in 36 of the 7,726 US cloud-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. We count one month at a time, so we make no claim about whether demand is rising or falling. The certification is valid for two years, and renewing means passing the exam again.
How difficult is the CKA exam?
For a newcomer, the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is a performance-based exam: instead of picking answers, you solve tasks at a command line (a text window where you type commands) on live Kubernetes clusters, groups of servers run by Kubernetes software. You get two hours and need 66% to pass. The exam is online and proctored, which means a remote supervisor watches you while you work. We found no pass rate on the Linux Foundation's pages, so difficulty cannot be measured directly.
How long does it take to get the CKA?
We have no reliable figure. Fewer than ten people in the Reddit posts and comments we collected in 2026 stated how long they studied for the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), too few to report. Your time depends on how much Linux and Kubernetes (the system that runs apps on groups of servers) you already know. The exam fee includes 12 months of exam eligibility and two sessions on Killer.sh, a practice simulator that copies the real exam.
How much does the CKA cost?
The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) exam alone costs US$445 at the Linux Foundation, read October 11, 2026. That price includes one retake and two sessions on Killer.sh, a practice simulator that copies the real exam. Bundles cost US$625 with a THRIVE-ONE annual training subscription and US$645 with the official Kubernetes Fundamentals course (bundle prices read October 3, 2026). The certification lasts two years; renewing means passing the exam again. If you pay today's exam-only price for the renewal too, four years cost $445 plus $445, for a total of $890.
Does the CKA expire?
Yes. The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is valid for two years; certifications earned before April 1, 2024, are valid for three years. To renew, you take and pass the exam again, and the new certification runs two years from that pass. The Linux Foundation lists no route through continuing-education credits as of October 11, 2026 (points earned from courses or events).
What is the Certified Kubernetes Administrator salary?
We do not publish a Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) salary, because we found no source that measures what the certification adds to pay. Pay follows the job title, the country and your experience. Our DevOps-engineer and cloud-engineer role pages cover the two jobs in which we count the CKA; DevOps engineers build, release and run software as one team.
Should I take the CKA or the CKS first?
The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) comes first. The Linux Foundation requires candidates to have taken and passed the CKA before attempting the CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist), its exam on securing Kubernetes (software for running apps on many servers). The CKS passing score is 67%.
Should a beginner take the KCNA or the CKA?
A beginner with no Linux or Kubernetes experience (Kubernetes is software for running apps on groups of servers) can start with the KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate), a multiple-choice exam on foundational knowledge, taken online with a remote supervisor watching. The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is a hands-on exam of live tasks at a command line. The CKA has no prerequisite, so you can go straight to it if you already work with Linux servers.
