Is the CKAD certification worth it?
27 of 3,861 devops engineer job ads in the United States name the CKAD (Adzuna, October 2026)
Passing the CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) is worth it if you build or deploy apps on Kubernetes, software that runs apps across groups of servers. In October 2026, the phrase certified kubernetes application developer appeared in 27 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads (jobs that build, release and run software) on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.
We search for the full title only, so an ad that says just "CKAD" is missed and each CKAD figure here is a minimum (the true number is at least this high). Our counting method.

Is CKAD worth it in 2026?
It is, for software developers whose apps already run on Kubernetes and for DevOps engineers who package and release those apps. It is a weaker fit if you mainly set up and repair the clusters themselves (the groups of servers that Kubernetes runs as one system), which is the work the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) tests, or if the jobs you want do not mention Kubernetes.
The CKAD is a certification from the Linux Foundation, a non-profit technology organization, and the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation), the Linux Foundation group that looks after Kubernetes. Its five exam domains (topic areas) cover designing, building, deploying, configuring, securing and monitoring applications on Kubernetes. The Linux Foundation lists no prerequisites.
We base this verdict on what the exam covers. The ad counts below are minimums, because ads that write only "CKAD" are not counted: read them as proof that employers write the full title, not as a measure of demand. They do not show whether holders get more interviews or better pay.
Start here, even if you have no target job yet. Open a job board, read ten ads near you for the job you want (developer or DevOps engineer) and mark whether each asks for Kubernetes, Helm (a tool that installs packaged apps on Kubernetes) or kubectl (the Kubernetes command-line tool). Where they do, the CKAD exam matches the daily work in those ads. Where they ask for one cloud provider instead, look at the section on CKAD or another certification.
How often does the CKAD appear in job ads?
In October 2026, Adzuna listed 27 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads that contain the CKAD's full title, certified kubernetes application developer. We count the CKAD only in DevOps-engineer ads.
In India, the phrase appeared in 6 of the 1,549 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna), a small number of ads.
In the UK, the phrase certified kubernetes application developer appeared in none of the 555 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). In Germany, the same phrase appeared in none of the 1,077 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
In France, the same full title appeared in none of the 745 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna). In Poland, the same phrase appeared in none of the 483 DevOps-engineer ads in October 2026 (Adzuna).
An ad may be written in the local language or name only the acronym (CKAD), and our English search phrase misses both. For the tools and certificates that DevOps-engineer ads ask for country by country, see our DevOps-engineer page.
CKAD and CKA in the same US ads
The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is the related exam for people who run clusters. In October 2026, its full name, certified kubernetes administrator, appeared in 53 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads, and the CKAD's full name appeared in 27 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads (Adzuna). An ad can name both, so the two counts overlap and cannot be added.
Base the choice on the work you do: the CKAD if you build what runs on Kubernetes, the CKA if you keep the clusters running. Our CKA vs CKAD comparison covers the choice in full, and the CKA page covers the administrator exam.
Is CKAD worth it? What Reddit posters say
The two comments below come from the Reddit posts we collected in 2026. Each is one person's view, linked so you can read it in full.
In a thread about why some engineers dislike certifications, a commenter said of the CKAD: "It was a good way to learn the fundamentals, but it doesn’t make me an expert." (r/kubernetes)
In a thread started by a poster who had failed twice, a commenter recommended Killercoda, a site with browser-based Kubernetes practice labs: "I used it for CKAD before and it was the major reason I passed that one." (r/kubernetes)
These two commenters say preparing for the CKAD taught them the fundamentals and that practice labs helped them pass. Two comments show two views, not a trend. Be ready to say what you built with Kubernetes, not only that you passed.

How hard is the CKAD?
Hard if you are not quick at a command line, because the CKAD is performance-based: you complete live tasks against a two-hour clock instead of choosing answers. We found no pass rate published by the Linux Foundation, so difficulty cannot be measured directly.
What the Linux Foundation's CKAD page and certification FAQ say about the exam:
- It lasts two hours, and every task is done at a command line (a text window where you type commands) on running Kubernetes clusters.
- You need 66% to pass.
- It is online and proctored: a remote supervisor follows your session through video, audio and screen sharing.
- The tasks come in English, Simplified Chinese or Japanese.
The Linux Foundation's CKAD page splits the exam into five domains, each with a fixed weight.

| Application Design and Build | 20% |
| Application Deployment | 20% |
| Services and Networking | 20% |
| Application Observability and Maintenance | 15% |
In plain words, the largest domain covers an app's settings, secrets (stored passwords and keys) and access rights. Observability means watching a running app through its logs and health checks. Services and networking covers how users and other apps reach yours. The exam runs on a recent Kubernetes release, so check the version on the Linux Foundation's CKAD page before you choose study material.

How long does it take to get the CKAD?
We have no reliable figure. The Reddit posts and comments we collected held too few statements of CKAD study time to report a typical one.
Your time depends on what you already know. A developer who already writes manifests (the text files that describe an app to Kubernetes) starts ahead of someone who has not used kubectl. Two official numbers help you plan:
- The Linux Foundation's course for this exam, Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259), has 35 hours of self-paced material.
- The exam fee gives you 12 months in which to take the exam.
As an illustration only: at 5 hours a week, the 35 course hours alone take 7 weeks, before practice and the Killer.sh sessions. Fewer hours a week means a longer plan, and the 12-month window is the limit.
How to prepare for the CKAD
- Open the CKAD curriculum on the Linux Foundation's exam page and mark each skill you could not show today.
- Work through the marked skills on a practice cluster, typing every command rather than copying it. Killercoda, named in the Reddit comment above, offers browser-based labs; you can also run a small cluster on your own laptop.
- Save the two Killer.sh sessions included in the exam fee for the last weeks before your exam. Killer.sh is a simulator built to look like the real exam; a CKAD session has 17 questions, and each session stays open for 36 hours after you activate it.
How much does the CKAD cost?
The Linux Foundation sells the CKAD exam for US$445. The fee covers a second attempt if the first one fails, two Killer.sh practice sessions and a 12-month window in which to book and take the exam.
| What you buy | US price | Included |
|---|---|---|
| CKAD exam | $445 | One retake, two Killer.sh sessions, 12-month window |
| CKAD exam with THRIVE-ONE | $625 | The exam and one year of THRIVE-ONE, the Linux Foundation's training subscription |
| CKAD exam with LFD259 | $645 | The exam and the Kubernetes for Developers course |
| LFD259 by itself | $299 | The course with 35 hours of material, no exam |
Source: Linux Foundation CKAD exam page and LFD259 course page.
Buying the course and the exam separately comes to $299 plus $445, for a total of $744, so the course bundle at $645 costs $99 less.
Because CKAD renewal is a new pass of the same exam, budget for a second fee two years in. We found no separate renewal price on the Linux Foundation's pages, so these sums use the current $445:
- Two years, first exam only: $445.
- Four years, exam only: $445 plus a $445 renewal, for a total of $890.
- Four years, starting with the course bundle: $645 plus a $445 renewal, for a total of $1,090.

Does the CKAD expire, and how does renewal work?
Yes. A CKAD stays valid for two years, according to the Linux Foundation's certification FAQ. Anyone who earned it before April 1, 2024, holds a three-year certification instead.
CKAD renewal means taking and passing the exam again, and the FAQ describes no other route. Keeping the CKAD therefore costs one exam fee, plus practice time, every two years.

CKAD or another certification: which fits you?
The right exam is the one built around the tools that the employers you want already use. We cannot rank the CKAD against other certifications from our counts, because we search for each one with a different phrase.
- Kubernetes ads, and you look after the clusters: the CKA fits better than the CKAD.
- Ads that ask for Terraform: Terraform Associate is HashiCorp's exam for Terraform, a tool that sets up servers and networks from code files; see our Terraform Associate page.
- Employers on AWS (Amazon Web Services) with no Kubernetes in the ads: an Amazon exam is the closer match. Start with our AWS certifications overview; if you already build on AWS, the AWS Solutions Architect Associate page covers that exam.
If you are weighing a cloud job rather than a DevOps one, our cloud-engineer page shows which certificates and skills cloud-engineer ads name.
What we did not check
- A CKAD pass rate: we found none published by the Linux Foundation.
- Pay for CKAD holders: we found no source that measures it.
- Software-developer ads: we counted the CKAD only in DevOps-engineer ads.
- Which courses the THRIVE-ONE subscription includes, and the price of a third attempt after the included retake.
- Study time: the posts we collected gave no typical figure.
- Third-party courses and practice sites, including Killercoda: we do not test or rate them.
- Prices in currencies other than US dollars.

Questions people ask
Is CKAD certification worth it for a developer?
Yes, if you build or deploy apps on Kubernetes, software that runs apps across groups of servers. The CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) is a hands-on Linux Foundation exam that costs US$445. In October 2026, the phrase certified kubernetes application developer appeared in 27 of the 3,861 US DevOps-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Ads that write only "CKAD" are not in that count, so it is a minimum.
What is the CKAD salary?
We do not publish a salary for holders of the CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer), because we found no source that measures what the certification adds to pay. Pay follows the job title, the country and your experience. Our DevOps-engineer page covers the job in which we count the CKAD; DevOps engineers build, release and run software as one team.
How long does it take to get the CKAD?
We have no reliable figure. The Reddit posts we collected held too few statements of study time for the CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) to report a typical one. The Linux Foundation's official course for the exam, Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259), has 35 hours of self-paced material, and the US$445 exam fee gives you 12 months in which to take the exam.
Does the CKAD expire?
Yes. The CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) is valid for two years, according to the Linux Foundation's certification FAQ; a CKAD earned before April 1, 2024, is valid for three years. CKAD renewal means taking and passing the exam again. If you pay today's US$445 exam-only price for the renewal too, four years cost $445 plus $445, for a total of $890.
How hard is the CKAD exam?
The CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) is a performance-based exam: you solve live tasks at a command line (a text window where you type commands) on running Kubernetes clusters, groups of servers that Kubernetes manages as one. You get two hours and need 66% to pass. The exam is online and proctored, which means a remote supervisor watches you through video, audio and screen sharing. We found no pass rate published by the Linux Foundation, so difficulty cannot be measured directly.
Can I take the CKAD without the CKA?
Yes. The Linux Foundation lists no prerequisites for the CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer), so you do not need the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) first. The CKA is the exam for people who run Kubernetes clusters; the CKAD is for people who build and deploy the apps on them.
