How to become a machine learning engineer without a degree: what 23,274 US AI-engineer ads name
Possible, but not directly: plan to start in another tech job first. How to become a machine learning engineer without a degree starts with Python, which appeared in 20% of the 23,274 US AI-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad site, in October 2026. US labor data (BLS) gives a bachelor's degree as the typical start for software developers.
An ML (machine learning) engineer trains, tests and runs AI models: programs that learn patterns from past data, then answer questions or make predictions. An AI engineer builds software that uses those models. The two titles overlap, and our AI engineer certification page uses the same split. Our job-ad counts come from Adzuna searches for ai engineer, so they describe AI-engineer ads, not machine learning engineer ads. We count skills and certificate phrases in those ads, not degree wording.
Your first step is to start learning Python, step 1 of the route below. Alongside it, do an exercise of your own (this is not data we collected): save 10 ads for AI-engineer or ML-engineer jobs near you or from remote listings. From each, copy the education line, the programming languages and tools, and the past job titles or years of experience asked for. The education lines in your 10 ads tell you how hard the degree wall is in your market.

Can you become a machine learning engineer without a degree?
It is possible to try, but every official source we read treats a degree as the normal way in, and the research occupation expects a graduate degree. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, has no occupation called machine learning engineer or AI engineer.
BLS sorts jobs by SOC code, the government's job-classification number, and has no code for either title. The comparison depends on the work: for building apps on AI models, compare software developers (15-1252); for training models, compare computer and information research scientists (15-1221), the occupation our AI engineer certification page uses. The BLS page for research scientists says these workers need at least a master's degree in computer science or a related field. A master's degree is a graduate degree, about two to three more years of study after a four-year bachelor's degree. BLS adds that in the federal government a bachelor's degree may be enough for some jobs.
ONET, the US Labor Department's database of job descriptions, also has no machine learning engineer entry. A search for the title returns data scientists, computer systems engineers and architects, computer and information research scientists, and software developers. ONET places the research scientists in Job Zone Five, the top of its five-level scale of how much preparation a job needs, labeled Extensive Preparation Needed. The O*NET summary says most jobs in that zone need graduate school.
The degree picture is easier on the app-building side. BLS says software developers (SOC 15-1252) typically start with a bachelor's degree, and O*NET places them in Job Zone Four, where its summary says most jobs need a four-year degree but some do not. That gap between a master's and a bachelor's is why the route below passes through a coding or data role first.
BLS publishes no pay figure for machine learning engineers. For research scientists (15-1221), the median annual wage (the middle value) was $140,300 in May 2025, and for software developers (15-1252) it was $135,980. Neither is pay for machine learning engineers or for workers without a degree.
Two commenters on r/learnmachinelearning, a Reddit forum, disagree on this. One wrote: "AI/ML Engineering isn't an entry-level role." (r/learnmachinelearning, September 2026). The other wrote: "I'm entirely self taught, no degree, and am currently a sr AI Engineer." (r/learnmachinelearning, September 2026). Both are single, unchecked accounts.
How do you become an AI engineer without a degree?
Learn to code, get hired as a developer or analyst, and move into AI work from there. Our reading of the official sources above gives this order:
- Python. Learn the language well enough to write small programs, read other people's code and load a table of data. Python is the general-purpose programming language that AI libraries such as PyTorch (a free code library for building and training AI models) are used through. Our advice, not a count from ads: learn Git (the tool that tracks code changes) and basic SQL (a language for pulling data out of databases) alongside it.
- Machine learning basics. Machine learning means training a program on past data so it can predict or sort new data into groups. Learn how a model is trained and tested on small public data sets, and the math behind it as far as the course needs.
- Build with AI models. Write a small app that sends text to a large language model through an API (an interface that lets one program send requests to another) and does something useful with the answer. Then train one small model of your own with PyTorch. Write tests or checks (small programs that confirm the output is right) so you can show your app or model gives correct answers.
- Get a first tech job. This is the hardest step, and we have no data on how often it works. BLS gives a bachelor's degree as the usual starting education for software developers and for data scientists, so your portfolio has to carry your application. Look for a junior developer role, a technical support role on a software team or a data analyst role, including one at your current employer, where people already know your work. Our data scientist without a degree guide covers the data route in more detail.
- Move into AI work. Take on AI tasks in that job, then apply for AI-engineer or machine learning engineer roles with that work on your resume.
A bootcamp, an intensive paid course from a private company, is one way through steps 1 to 3. We have no job-outcome data for any AI bootcamp; our coding bootcamps guide lists what to ask before you pay. Our career change guide compares courses and exams for other jobs.
What skills do AI-engineer job ads name?
AI-engineer ads name Python, PyTorch and LLMs, the three skills we count for this job. An LLM is a large language model, the kind of text-writing model behind chatbots such as ChatGPT.
In October 2026, python appeared in 20% of the ads for US AI-engineer jobs on Adzuna, pytorch in 5.4% and llm in 15%.
| Country | AI-engineer ads counted | Ads naming python |
Ads naming pytorch |
Ads naming llm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US | 23,274 | 20% | 5.4% | 15% |
| UK | 1,146 | 37% | 5.0% | 20% |

Skills in AI-engineer job ads by country. Source: Adzuna, ads returned for ai engineer, counted when the ad text contains the word, collected in October 2026. Analysis: CertWorthIt. How we count.
The UK and India rows are side notes for readers outside the US, and we did not count llm in India. Math, SQL, TensorFlow (another model-building library) and cloud skills (using computing power rented online) are not in our count, so the table says nothing about them. If one of them shows up in the 10 ads you saved, add it to step 2 or 3 of the route.
Machine learning engineer career change: which job do you come from?
Come from a job where you already write code or work with data. The commenter quoted above, who said this is not an entry-level role, added that ML engineers they had looked up online described starting out in data analytics, data science or software engineering before they moved into machine learning.
- Software developer. You already write code, so the gap is machine learning and AI models. For this job, BLS expects a bachelor's degree, and O*NET says some jobs in its group do not need one.
- Data analyst or data scientist. You already work with real data, so the gap is software skills. For data scientists, BLS starts from a bachelor's degree and adds that some employers prefer a master's or doctoral degree. Our data scientist without a degree guide covers that route, and the data scientist page shows which skills and certificates those ads name.
- Data engineer. Data engineers build the systems that move and store data, which AI models then use. Our data engineer page shows what those ads ask for.

Which certificates fit a beginner?
For a beginner, the course certificates fit steps 1 to 3 of the route, and an exam fits once you know which cloud provider your target employers use, such as AWS (Amazon Web Services) or Azure (Microsoft's cloud). Three exams and three course certificates are listed below, and each states its own entry rules. A certification is a credential you earn by passing a vendor's exam. A course certificate shows you finished a set of online lessons, with no supervised exam. Coursera is an online course site; a Specialization or Professional Certificate there is a series of courses that ends in a certificate.
| Option | Kind | Level and entry rules the provider states | Cost the provider states | Length or format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWS Certified AI Practitioner | Exam from AWS, Amazon's cloud | Foundational; no prerequisite | $100 | 65 questions; valid three years |
| AI-901, Azure AI Fundamentals | Microsoft exam | Fundamentals; expects Python syntax and familiarity with Azure | $99 in the US (set by country) | Passing score 700; does not expire |
| AI-103, Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate | Microsoft exam | Associate; expects experience building apps in Python | Not checked here | 120 minutes; renewed yearly with a free online test |
| Google AI Professional Certificate | Course certificate on Coursera | Beginner; no prerequisites | $49 a month in the US and Canada | 8 courses |
| Machine Learning Specialization (Stanford Online and DeepLearning.AI) | Course certificate on Coursera | Beginner-friendly | $49 a month | 3 courses, about two months at 10 hours a week |
| IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate | Course certificate on Coursera | Working knowledge of Python and Jupyter Notebooks expected | Not checked here | 13 courses, about four months at 10 hours a week |
Source: AWS, Microsoft Learn and Coursera pages listed under Sources, read October 3, 2026. "Not checked here" means we did not record a price for that option from the provider's page, so check the page before you pay. Foundational and Fundamentals are entry levels; Associate is a level above them. "Valid three years" means the AWS credential stops counting three years after you pass, "does not expire" means AI-901 needs no renewal, and AI-103 lapses each year unless you pass Microsoft's free online renewal test. Jupyter Notebooks is a free tool for running Python code in a browser, step by step. Stanford Online is Stanford University's online learning unit; DeepLearning.AI is a company that makes AI courses.
Microsoft's older exams have changed. AI-900 was retired on June 30, 2026, and replaced by AI-901, and Microsoft lists the AI-102 certification, Azure AI Engineer Associate, as retired. Our AI certifications guide covers every AI credential we checked.
Our guides on certificate vs degree and certificate vs certification explain what each credential proves. No official source we read says a certificate replaces a degree for these jobs.
Do AI-engineer job ads name these certificates?
Some do, by exact phrase: in October 2026, the phrase aws certified ai practitioner appeared in 103 of the 23,274 US AI-engineer ads on Adzuna. We count each phrase word for word, and each phrase is written in its own style (an exam code, a full credential name or a course name), so the rows are not a ranking of the certificates.

An ad that writes a credential in other words, such as an AWS AI certification, does not contain these phrases, so read each cell as a minimum. A count cannot tell a required credential from a nice-to-have one. Prompt engineering means writing instructions for an AI model; the exact phrase "prompt engineering certification" appeared in none of the 23,274 US AI-engineer ads on Adzuna in October 2026. Our prompt engineering page covers the courses sold under that name.
How long does the switch take?
No source we read measures the time from first lesson to a first machine learning engineer job; what we have are course length estimates and single career stories. Coursera lists the Machine Learning Specialization at about two months at 10 hours a week and the IBM AI Engineering certificate at about four months at 10 hours a week. If you take one after the other, the providers' estimates add up to about six months of part-time study.
Those six months leave out learning Python before the IBM course, which asks for it, and the projects in the next section. They also leave out the search for a first tech job in step 4 of the route, and we have no timing data on that search. Expect the whole switch to take longer than the course estimates.
What should you show instead of a degree?
Show working software that a hiring manager can open, run and read. A portfolio is a small set of finished projects you can point to. Three kinds of project fit this job:
- An app that calls a model. A small web app that sends a user's text to a large language model through the provider's API and does one job with the answer, such as summarizing a document. Deploy it (put it online so others can use it) and link it.
- A model you trained. Train a small model with PyTorch on a public data set, and write up what you tried, what failed and how you measured the result.
- A notebook with your analysis. A notebook is a file that mixes code, its results and your notes; Jupyter Notebooks is a free tool for making one.
Keep the code in a public repository (an online folder for code) on GitHub, a website where people share code. Never commit an API key (the secret code that lets your app use a paid AI service), a password or any other secret to a public repository; anyone who finds it can run up charges on your account. Store secrets in a local settings file that Git is told to ignore. In a deployed app, keep them on the server side (the part of the app that runs on your host), never in code sent to the user's browser. If a secret ever lands in a public repository, revoke it (cancel it in your provider account) at once and make a new one; deleting the file does not remove it from the repository's history. Set a spending limit, or at least a billing alert (a message when spending passes an amount you choose), on every AI or cloud account before you start.
Add a README file (a text page stored with the code) to each project that says what it does, how to run it and one problem you solved. On your resume, list each project by name and only skills you actually used, such as Python and PyTorch, in the words of the 10 ads you saved.

Does skills-based hiring help without a degree?
It can help, but one 2024 study suggests it changed less than announced. Skills-based hiring means judging candidates by what they can do, with work-sample tasks, skills tests or other structured assessments; that is how the US Office of Personnel Management, the federal government's human resources agency, describes it for federal jobs.
A 2024 study by the Burning Glass Institute (a labor-market research group) and Harvard Business School found that about 45% of large US firms that removed a degree requirement did so "in name only" and hired as before. Where the change was real, the share of hires without a bachelor's degree rose by about 3.5 percentage points, meaning about 3.5 more such hires per 100 hires. The study covers all jobs, not AI work. Our skills-based hiring guide has the details.

Questions people ask
Can you become a machine learning engineer without a degree?
You can try, but official US sources expect a degree for the occupations near this work, and we found no source counting machine learning engineers hired without a degree. Machine learning engineers train, test and run AI models (programs that learn patterns from data). The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, has no occupation for this title or for AI engineers. For building apps on AI models, compare software developers (SOC code 15-1252, the government's job-classification number), where BLS expects a bachelor's degree (a four-year college degree). For training models, compare computer and information research scientists (SOC code 15-1221), where BLS expects a master's degree (a graduate degree taken after a bachelor's degree) and adds that a bachelor's degree may be enough for some federal jobs. CertWorthIt counts skills and certificate phrases in job ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, not degree wording, so we cannot say how many ads ask for a degree.
Is an AI engineer career change realistic without a degree?
An AI engineer career change without a degree is realistic as a second step, after a job in software or data. An AI engineer builds software that uses AI models (programs trained on data). For software developers (SOC code 15-1252, the government's job-classification number), the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) starts from a bachelor's degree (a four-year college degree); for the research occupation our AI engineer certification page uses (SOC code 15-1221), it expects a master's degree. Two commenters on Reddit's r/learnmachinelearning forum disagreed in September 2026: one wrote that AI and machine learning engineering is not an entry-level role, and another wrote that they were self-taught, had no degree and worked as a senior AI engineer. Those are two people's views, not a measure.
What should I learn first to become an AI engineer without a degree?
Learn Python first; it is a programming language, and it is the first of the three skills CertWorthIt counts in AI-engineer job ads. In October 2026, Adzuna, a job-ad search site, listed 23,274 US ads for the search ai engineer. The word python appeared in 20% of the ads. The word pytorch (a free code library for building and training AI models) appeared in 5.4%, and llm (large language model, the kind of model behind chatbots) in 15%. Those are three counted skills, not a full list; we did not count math, SQL or cloud skills.
How long does a machine learning engineer career change take?
No source we read measures the time from first lesson to a first machine learning engineer job. The figures we have are course providers' own study-time estimates on Coursera, an online course site, read October 3, 2026. The Machine Learning Specialization from Stanford Online and DeepLearning.AI is listed at about two months at 10 hours a week. The IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate is listed at about four months at 10 hours a week, so the two together come to about six months of part-time study. That leaves out learning Python first, building projects and the search for a first coding or data job, for which we have no timing data.
What do machine learning engineers earn in the US?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, publishes no pay figure for machine learning engineers or AI engineers, because it has no occupation for either title. For SOC code 15-1221, the research occupation our AI engineer certification page uses, BLS gives a median annual wage of $140,300 in May 2025; the median is the middle value, so half earn more and half less. For software developers (SOC code 15-1252), the coding job this route passes through, the May 2025 median was $135,980. Neither figure is machine learning engineer pay or pay for workers without a degree, and CertWorthIt does not count salaries in job ads.
Can a certificate replace a degree for AI engineer jobs?
No official source we read says a certificate replaces a degree for AI engineer jobs. A course certificate, such as the IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate on Coursera (an online course site), shows you finished a set of online lessons, with no supervised exam. A certification such as the AWS Certified AI Practitioner ($100, Amazon's entry-level AI exam, AWS page read October 3, 2026) shows you passed one vendor's exam. In October 2026, the phrase aws certified ai practitioner appeared in 103 of the 23,274 US AI-engineer ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site, in CertWorthIt's count. Employers decide what they accept.
