Databricks certifications: which one is worth it?

Job-ad data: October 2026 · Editor: · Updated

Databricks certifications are worth it for one kind of candidate: someone whose employer or target job ads run on Databricks. For other readers, $200 goes further on SQL, Python and a project you can show. Databricks offers eight certifications, listed on its certification overview. Each exam costs $200 per attempt, with no free retakes, and each credential is valid for two years (Databricks certification FAQ, read October 4, 2026). Start with the Data Engineer Associate unless your work is analysis or machine learning. Our monthly job-ad count (October 2026) does not include Databricks or data-engineer ads yet, so this page gives no Databricks share; the sections below use official facts and the data we do have. How we count ads.

Verdict by situation:

  • You build pipelines on Databricks, or your target ads name it: take the Data Engineer Associate, then the Professional once you run production work.
  • You are a data analyst on a Databricks team: the Data Analyst Associate tests your daily work. Otherwise, our data-analyst page shows what analyst ads ask for.
  • You are an analyst moving toward data engineering: the Data Engineer Associate, if your target ads name Databricks.
  • You train or deploy models: the Machine Learning Associate, or the Generative AI Engineer Associate for LLM applications.
  • You are new to data with no project experience: learn first. Databricks' general advice is at least six months of hands-on Databricks use before an exam.
Data Engineer Associate exam: share of questions by domain
Data transformation and modeling (22%) and data ingestion and loading (21%) make up 43% of the exam; the platform overview is the smallest domain at 6%.

Is Databricks certification worth it? Who it pays off for

Our reading, which holds whatever the count shows: any ad that names a Databricks certification names Databricks itself, so the credential counts only where the platform does. It is a quick way to show a recruiter that you know the platform the team already pays for. It does less for a team that runs on Snowflake, BigQuery or Microsoft Fabric.

We count how often employers name a certificate in job ads, by country, using the local job title. Databricks is checked against data-engineer ads and data-scientist ads.

Our October 2026 count has no Databricks figure for the US, the UK or India yet. Once it does, this section will set the certification against the skills data-engineer ads name: SQL, Spark and Airflow.

Is Databricks certification recognized by employers?

Databricks issues each certification as a digital badge through Accredible, at credentials.databricks.com, and any employer can check it there. You can opt into the public Databricks Certified Directory. Databricks also reserves the right to tell your employer which certifications you hold, but not whether you failed an attempt (Databricks FAQ). It does not mail paper certificates.

Recognition by a platform vendor is not the same as an industry-wide standard such as a degree. The exam shows that you passed a proctored test on Databricks at one point in the last two years. Whether a hiring manager weighs it depends on the stack: a team migrating to Databricks reads it as relevant; a team on another platform may not read it at all.

The Databricks certification path, by role

Databricks groups its exams by job track. Every exam is multiple choice, costs $200 and is valid for two years.

Source: Databricks exam pages and certification FAQ, read October 4, 2026. Questions are scored questions; exams may add unscored ones, with extra time for them. Experience is what Databricks recommends in hands-on use. *The two Data Engineer pages give no figure for recommended experience, so this is the six-month minimum the FAQ recommends for all exams.

The two Data Engineer exams, the Machine Learning Associate and the Generative AI Engineer Associate are offered in English, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil) and Korean. The other four are in English only.

None of the eight has a formal prerequisite; the Professional exams do not require the Associate. The Hadoop Migration Architect exam was retired on August 1, 2024. The Professional Data Scientist and the Azure Databricks Associate Platform exams were retired on August 22, 2022; the second is not the same as Microsoft's current DP-750 exam.

Is the Databricks Data Engineer Associate worth it?

Of the eight, this is the one to start with. The Data Engineer Associate tests foundational pipeline work on Databricks, with code in SQL where possible and Python otherwise. Ingestion and transformation take the largest shares of the questions, followed by Lakeflow Jobs, then governance and security. It is offered in four languages, and it is the only certification with a dedicated renewal exam.

The Data Engineer Professional goes further: production pipelines, cost and performance tuning, streaming, and deployment with the Databricks CLI, REST API and Asset Bundles. Its biggest domain is writing data-processing code in Python and SQL. Take it when you have built and run pipelines in a real workspace; it fits a mid-level data engineer more than a career changer. If you are aiming for a first data-engineering job without a degree, our guide covers the routes in.

Is the Databricks data analyst certification worth it?

Only if your team analyzes data in Databricks. The Data Analyst Associate covers Databricks SQL and SQL warehouses, dashboards, data governance in Unity Catalog, and AI/BI Genie spaces. It is offered in English only.

Our data-analyst counts show what the wider market asks for. In October 2026, SQL appeared in 42% of the ads for US data analysts and Power BI in 25% (Adzuna). In India, SQL appeared in 47% of the ads. For a Power BI shop, Microsoft's PL-300 is the closer match; it appears in 4 of the 6,094 ads for US data analysts.

Machine learning, generative AI and context engineering

The Machine Learning Associate tests basic machine learning on Databricks: AutoML, MLflow, feature engineering, training and deployment. The Professional is about production MLOps at scale, and Databricks recommends a year of hands-on work first. Both use Python.

The Generative AI Engineer Associate covers building retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications and LLM chains with Databricks tools such as Model Serving and MLflow. The Context Engineer Associate tests how to assemble and govern the information that AI agents receive, including retrieval, memory and tool connections. For both, check your target ads before paying: the exams test Databricks tools, which help only where an employer uses them.

Associate Developer for Apache Spark

This exam tests the Spark DataFrame API in Python and Spark architecture, not the Databricks platform as a whole. It suits a developer who writes Spark code on any platform. The Data Engineer Associate touches PySpark but uses SQL where possible; the Spark exam goes deeper into the DataFrame API and Spark internals.

What to take after the Data Engineer Associate

Posters on Reddit who hold the Associate ask where to go next: the Professional, Microsoft's Azure Databricks exam or a cloud data-engineering exam from AWS or Google. Let the job ads decide. If the ads you read pair Databricks with Azure, the Microsoft exam adds the Azure side; if they pair it with AWS, the AWS data exam does. The Professional is the next step only if you stay on Databricks-heavy work.

Databricks certification cost: $200 per attempt

These are the prices Databricks publishes, read October 4, 2026.

Over four years, one certification costs $400 if you pass on the first try and renew once. Each failed attempt adds $200. Databricks sells all exams in US dollars, and the FAQ lists no regional prices.

The cheapest serious route is the free one. Databricks says its free Data Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer and Data Analyst learning pathways take about 12 hours each, and Databricks Free Edition gives you a workspace to practice in at no cost, for personal use only. Pay for an instructor-led course only if your employer covers it.

How Databricks renewal works

A Databricks certification expires two years after the date it is awarded, and the digital badge expires with it. Databricks notifies you before then. To recertify, you take the full current version of the exam at $200; there are no continuing-education credits to log.

The Data Engineer Associate is the exception. Holders can take a renewal exam instead: 25 scored questions in 60 minutes, online only, covering the same topics as the full exam. It saves time, not money, since it costs the same $200.

Microsoft's competing certification renews differently: free, every 12 months, with an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

How long does it take to get Databricks certification? How hard is it?

Databricks gives no study-time estimate. It recommends at least six months of hands-on Databricks experience before an exam, and a year before the Machine Learning Professional. The free learning pathways take about 12 hours and the paid Data Engineering with Databricks course 16 hours, so most of the time goes into using the platform, not watching courses.

The Reddit posts we collected have too few first-person study-time reports for Databricks exams (under 10) to give a range. Single posts show the spread: one poster described passing both data engineer certifications in two months while studying after work (r/dataengineering). Another passed two Databricks certifications, forgot most of it within months and asked how to make Spark stick (r/dataengineering).

How hard Databricks certification is cannot be measured from outside the company, because Databricks publishes neither passing scores nor pass rates. Three things make the exams harder than the question count suggests:

  • There are no official practice exams. Databricks says unofficial ones are often misleading and points you to each exam guide, which it calls the source of truth for what is tested.
  • The exams follow the product. Databricks keeps only one live version of each exam, so a course or question bank written for an earlier version may not match what you get.
  • Recertifying means taking the current exam, so what you studied two years earlier may not be enough.

For posters asking where to find study material (r/AzureCertification) or practice tests (r/Udemy), the most reliable answer comes from Databricks itself: the exam guide on the exam page, plus the free learning pathway for that role.

A workable plan from these facts: the free 12-hour pathway for your role, practice in Free Edition or your employer's workspace, and a check of every topic in the exam guide. How many weeks that takes depends mostly on how much hands-on Databricks time you already have.

Databricks certification salary, Data Engineer Associate included

We found no source that measures what a Databricks certification adds to pay, for the Data Engineer Associate or any other exam. Databricks publishes no salary figure. Its certification page shows survey percentages on promotions and cost savings, but gives no sample, date or method, so we do not repeat them.

Pay for data engineers depends on the role, the level and the country, and our data-engineer role page covers what the job asks for. Our reading: the certification is unlikely to set your salary on its own. Its value is getting a Databricks team to read your application.

Alternatives and comparisons

Databricks Data Engineer Associate or Microsoft's Azure Databricks exam (DP-750)?

This is the comparison posters ask about most in the Reddit posts we collected (r/AzureCertification, r/dataengineering). Microsoft Certified: Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate (exam DP-750) tests Databricks on Azure and expects familiarity with Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Factory and Azure Monitor. It runs 120 minutes through Pearson VUE, comes in ten languages and is priced by the country where you take it; the Microsoft Learn certification page shows the price for your location. Microsoft updates the English version on October 19, 2026.

Databricks Data Engineer Associate Microsoft DP-750
Issuer Databricks Microsoft
Cloud covered any (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) Azure only
Price $200 set by country
Time 90 minutes 120 minutes
Renewal every two years, $200 every year, free online assessment

Source: Databricks exam page; Microsoft Learn certification and renewal pages, read October 3 and 4, 2026.

Take the Databricks exam if the ads you read mention Databricks on AWS or Google Cloud, or no cloud at all. Take DP-750 if they say Azure Databricks. Its renewal is free but required every 12 months, and the English exam changes on October 19, 2026, so check that your study material matches the new skills list.

Databricks vs Snowflake certification

Snowflake's entry exam, SnowPro Core, costs $175 per attempt, and its SnowPro Advanced exams (including Data Engineer) cost $375 each (Snowflake, read October 4, 2026). Databricks charges $200 at both levels, so its Professional exam costs less per attempt than a SnowPro Advanced exam. Snowflake describes the Core candidate as having six months of Snowflake experience, the same bar Databricks recommends.

Choose by the platform in your target ads, not by price: the two certifications prove different tools. Our Snowflake certification page covers its exams.

Course certificates instead

If you need structured lessons before any vendor exam, the IBM Data Engineering certificate, the IBM Data Science certificate and the Google Advanced Data Analytics Certificate are courses, not proctored certifications. They teach the basics a Databricks exam assumes. The data and analytics field page lists every credential we track in this area.

Who should take a Databricks exam, and who should skip it

Take one if:

  • Your current employer uses Databricks and pays for the exam or for training time.
  • The ads you apply to name Databricks, Spark or Delta Lake.
  • You already have six months on the platform and want proof of it that a recruiter can check.

Skip it, or put it off, if:

  • You have no data job yet and no Databricks access. Learn SQL and Python first, and use Free Edition before paying $200.
  • Your target employers run Snowflake, BigQuery or Microsoft Fabric.
  • You are waiting to apply until the certificate is done. A poster in Spain asked whether to job-hunt now or finish data engineer certifications first (r/cscareerquestionsEU). Our reading: apply while you study, since a $200 exam is rarely the line that decides an interview.

Databricks certifications on Reddit: what posters ask

We grouped the Databricks questions in the Reddit posts we collected (r/dataengineering, r/AzureCertification, r/cscareerquestionsEU, r/Udemy and others). Reddit is a self-selected sample: the posts show what people ask, not how many think the exam pays off. Posters who ask whether a Databricks certification is worth it mostly ask which exam to take, not whether to take one. The questions fall into five themes, all answered above.

  • Databricks or Microsoft. Posters compare the Databricks Data Engineer Associate with DP-750, and several report passing DP-750 with little Databricks experience. One asked whether four days was enough with none at all (r/AzureCertification).
  • Worth it for analysts. A data analyst with five or more years of experience asked whether the Data Engineer Associate would help them get a better job in India (r/dataengineering).
  • What comes next. Holders ask whether to add Azure Databricks or the AWS Data Engineer Associate (r/dataengineering), or which exam to take after both Databricks data engineer credentials (r/AzureCertification).
  • Databricks against other clouds. One poster asked whether Databricks or the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer counts for more at product companies (r/dataengineering).
  • Study material and practice tests, covered in the section on how long it takes.

How to get a Databricks certification, step by step

  1. Pick the exam that matches your role, and read its exam guide, linked from the exam page (for example, the Data Engineer Associate page). The guide lists every topic tested.
  2. Get hands-on time. Use your employer's workspace or Databricks Free Edition, and take the free learning pathway for your role in Databricks Academy.
  3. Register on Kryterion's Webassessor site for Databricks. You must be 18 or older. Choose online proctoring or a test center, and run the system check if you test online.
  4. Pay $200 at checkout.
  5. Take the exam. You see an unofficial result at once; Databricks reviews the proctor recording and then emails a badge from Accredible.
  6. Mark the expiration date: two years from the award. Plan to retake the current exam, or the shorter renewal exam for the Data Engineer Associate.

Questions people ask

Is a Databricks certificate worth it?

It pays off when the jobs you want run on Databricks. The exam costs $200 per attempt and the credential lasts two years, so it is a modest outlay next to a university course. It proves you can use one platform; it does not replace SQL, Python and pipeline experience you can talk about in an interview. Our job-ad count does not include Databricks yet, so we give no share for it here. If your target employers use another platform, spend the $200 on that platform's exam instead.

Which is the best Databricks certification?

For most people, the Data Engineer Associate. It is offered in four languages, it leads to the Data Engineer Professional and it is the only exam with a shorter renewal option. Analysts who work in Databricks SQL can take the Data Analyst Associate instead, and people who build models can take the Machine Learning Associate. Leave the two Professional exams until you have done the work they test: Databricks recommends at least a year of hands-on machine learning work before the Machine Learning Professional.

How much does a Databricks certification cost?

$200 per attempt, for every certification exam. Databricks gives no free retakes, so a failed attempt costs another $200 and you wait 14 days before trying again. Renewal every two years also costs $200, because you take the current exam again (or, for the Data Engineer Associate only, a shorter renewal exam at the same price). Badges are free, and so are the self-paced learning pathways in Databricks Academy; instructor-led courses are paid.

How hard is it to get a Databricks certification?

Databricks does not publish passing scores or pass rates, so there is no measured answer. What it publishes points to an exam for people who already use the platform: its general advice is at least six months of hands-on Databricks experience, the questions are multiple choice and there are no official practice exams. Associate exams have 45 or 48 scored questions in 90 minutes; the Professional exams have 59 in 120 minutes. One poster on Reddit described passing both data engineer exams in two months while studying after work.

Is Databricks certification free?

No. Every certification exam costs $200, and so does each retake and each renewal. What is free: the badge assessments (Databricks Fundamentals, Generative AI Fundamentals and AI Agent Fundamentals, about 20 minutes each), the self-paced role-based learning pathways in Databricks Academy, and Databricks Free Edition, a workspace for personal learning that you cannot use for commercial work. Badges are not certifications: they are unproctored quizzes and Databricks treats them as introductory.

Is the Databricks Data Engineer Associate certification worth it for a data analyst?

It can be, if you want to move toward data engineering and your employer or target ads use Databricks. The exam is about pipelines: data ingestion and loading, transformation and modeling, Lakeflow Jobs, and CI/CD make up most of it. If you want to stay an analyst, the Data Analyst Associate tests the Databricks SQL and dashboard work you would actually do, and SQL appeared in 42% of the ads for US data analysts and 47% in India in October 2026 (Adzuna).

Can I take a Databricks exam online?

Yes. Each exam page lists delivery online or at a test center, through Kryterion's Webassessor system. Online exams are proctored by webcam, and Databricks warns that a work laptop's firewall can cause the exam to be suspended, so run Kryterion's system check first. To move an online exam you must reschedule more than 24 hours ahead; a test-center exam needs more than 72 hours, or you pay a rescheduling fee. The Data Engineer Associate renewal exam is online only.
