Which one fits you, CIPD or SHRM-CP?
The SHRM-CP fits a US reader, including one with no HR job yet; CIPD courses are the UK route. Elsewhere, the HR ads where you want to work decide.
- In the US, with no HR job or degree: the SHRM-CP. SHRM's handbook says candidates "do not need a degree or previous HR experience to apply," and of the two phrases,
shrm-cpis the one UShrads on Adzuna name in larger numbers (counts in the job-ad section). - In the UK, with no HR job: ask course providers about the CIPD Foundation, the first of CIPD's three levels (RQF Level 3, 8 to 12 months). Ask too whether you could start at the middle level, the Associate Diploma (RQF Level 5, 12 to 16 months). The RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) is the scale England and Northern Ireland use to rank qualifications; a higher level is harder.
- In the UK, with years of HR work: the top level, the CIPD Advanced Diploma, which CIPD calls "comparable to" RQF Level 7 and says is "for experienced people professionals" (CIPD's term for HR staff).
- In India or another country: both bodies sell outside their home country, so the ads decide. Note in ten local HR ads whether they name the CIPD, the SHRM-CP or neither.
- Already in an HR job and aiming for a promotion: ask your employer whether it pays the fee and whether it counts the credential. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government's labor-data agency, says certification for HR specialists is "usually voluntary," though "some employers prefer or require it."

In October 2026, Adzuna returned 36,509 US job ads for the search word hr; the phrase shrm-cp appeared in 1,066 of them and cipd in 13. The table gives both counts for the US, the UK and India, each out of that country's own hr ads.

The two phrases do not measure the same thing. The phrase cipd matches any mention of the institute, such as a request for CIPD membership, while shrm-cp matches that abbreviation only, so an ad that writes "SHRM Certified Professional" in full is not counted, and one that writes "SHRM CP" with a space may not be. No count says whether an ad requires the credential or only prefers it.
The UK row rests on 280 ads in October 2026, a small sample, so we do not compare the two UK counts; read the UK row with care. CIPD vs SHRM-CP: how do cost and rules compare?
The SHRM-CP is one exam with a fixed US-dollar fee and a renewal every three years; a CIPD qualification is a course priced by its provider in pounds, followed by yearly membership. The table uses each issuer's own currency.

A Prometric test center is an exam room run by Prometric, the company that delivers SHRM's exams. If you apply today, you pay the standard $499 for the December 2026 to February 2027 testing window, as long as you apply by December 24, 2026. SHRM's fee table lists two standard prices, $399 and $499; we read the lower one as the member price. Each SHRM fee includes a $50 application fee.
CIPD qualifications and CIPD membership grades are separate things. The Associate Diploma is a qualification; finishing it makes you an Associate Member, a membership grade, and CIPD says you must be in active membership throughout your studies. The senior grade, Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD after your name), needs at least one year of work at the standard CIPD sets for Chartered Members; we did not check how CIPD defines it. After the Advanced Diploma or a CIPD-accredited postgraduate diploma or master's degree, you may be able to upgrade by an upgrade assessment; an experience assessment (a written submission and a discussion) is the other route.
CIPD's pages give its other levels their own UK price ranges: Foundation £1,300 to £2,300 and Advanced Diploma £3,000 to £7,000.

What does each cost over three years?
Over three years, a SHRM-CP holder who does not join SHRM pays $499 for the exam and $210 to renew by PDCs, for a total of $709. A SHRM member pays $399 plus a $165 renewal, $564 not counting SHRM's membership fee. The renewal fee does not apply if you renew by passing the exam again. Courses to earn PDCs and study material are extra.
A CIPD Associate Diploma in the UK costs £1,600 to £3,600, and joining CIPD adds a one-off £40 fee. Associate membership costs £199 a year (July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027). As an illustration, if you pay that rate for three years, three years of membership come to £597, and the course, the joining fee and membership come to £2,237 at the low end and £4,237 at the high end.
We give each total in its own currency; for a rough scale, check the day's dollar-to-pound rate. Set the total next to the ads where you want to work, because one buys an exam and the other a course.
CIPD or SHRM-CP: which is harder?
We cannot rank them: one is a timed exam, the other a course assessed over months, and we found no CIPD pass rate on the pages we read. SHRM reported a 68% pass rate for the SHRM-CP in its May to July 2025 exam window, about two in three candidates (50% for the SHRM-SCP, its exam for senior HR staff).
The SHRM-CP exam has 134 multiple-choice questions: 80 knowledge questions and 54 situational judgment items, short workplace scenarios in which you pick the best action. You get 3 hours 40 minutes in two 110-minute sections, and SHRM offers two exam windows (set periods when you can take it) a year. For the CIPD Associate Diploma, you hand in work over 12 to 16 months, and CIPD moderates (checks) it. Choose by the format that suits you: one sitting, or assessed work over a year or more.

Does either one count outside its home country?
Both are sold outside their home country, and neither body's pages that we read say it recognizes the other's credential. SHRM describes its certification as "recognized worldwide"; that is SHRM's own claim, not a measure.
The SHRM-CP exam is taken in person at a Prometric center, in English, Arabic or Korean; Arabic requires residence in the Arabic-speaking countries SHRM lists. SHRM's handbook sends international candidates to regional Prometric contact centers to book, but the SHRM pages we read do not list the countries with test centers, so check before you pay. SHRM's handbook says SHRM must comply with US trade sanctions run by OFAC (the US Treasury office that runs them), so if you live in a sanctioned country, check the handbook before you pay.
CIPD says its qualifications "are delivered by approved study centres and universities across the world, and all lead to CIPD membership." The prices on CIPD's pages are UK prices, and the RQF levels apply in England and Northern Ireland. Outside the UK, ask the local provider for its fee.
Is CIPD or SHRM-CP worth it?
Either one is worth it when the HR ads you want to answer name it, or when your employer pays. Our data cannot show whether holders are hired sooner, promoted or paid more, because we count phrases in ads, not hires or pay.
For a UK reader in talent acquisition (recruiting staff) asking whether Assoc CIPD is worth it: the Associate Member grade comes with finishing the Associate Diploma. In October 2026, the phrase cipd appeared in 102 of the 280 UK hr ads on Adzuna, a count that also takes in ads asking for CIPD membership in general.
Posters on Reddit, a discussion site, disagree. In an r/humanresources thread about SHRM, one certificate holder wrote that their certificate "adds zero value to my life or career" (comment), and another that theirs "was a factor with getting my job" (comment). Posters are self-selected, so these show what people say, not how many agree.
