The Salesforce Admin certification (Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator) is worth its $200 exam fee if you already work in Salesforce, a CRM (customer-records software), and want an admin job. In October 2026, the phrase salesforce certified administrator appeared in 24 of the 326 US Salesforce-administrator ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site.

Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator is the first of two certifications in Salesforce's administrator program (Foundations, covered below, is a separate credential for people newer to Salesforce). It is for people who set up and run an org, a company's own copy of Salesforce with its users, data and settings. The exam has no prerequisite, but Salesforce writes it for people with six months or more of experience as an administrator.

Who should take it, by situation:

  • You already use Salesforce at work and want to run it: take the exam once the tasks in the exam guide feel familiar. Salesforce recommends a mix of on-the-job experience and self-study.
  • You have never used Salesforce: start with the lessons on Trailhead, Salesforce's learning site, and build things in a practice org (a Salesforce account of your own where you can build and test without touching a real company's data) before you pay $200. The pages we read do not say whether Trailhead or a practice org costs money, so check the Trailhead credential page first. The exam is written for people who have done the job.
  • You are changing careers and have no target job yet: read ten Salesforce-administrator ads and note whether they name the certification.

Your first step, whichever group you are in: open ten US Salesforce-administrator ads and write down three things, whether they name the certification, how many years of experience they ask for, and any salary range they print. If the ads name the certification, book the exam once the exam-guide tasks feel familiar. If they ask for experience you lack, build projects in a practice org first. If the ads do not name it, the certification is optional for those jobs: build practice-org projects first and treat the exam as a bonus.

Is the Salesforce Admin certification worth it?

Yes, if you can pair it with hands-on practice: for $200 it gives an employer proof that you passed Salesforce's exam. On its own, without time in a real org, it proves less, and posters on Reddit describe that gap (quoted below).

Our view: the certification is a good first credential for someone who already touches Salesforce at work, such as a sales or support employee who wants to move into the admin role. For a complete beginner, it is a goal to reach after months of practice, not a first purchase.

Do you need a certification to be a Salesforce admin?

No rule we found requires it: Salesforce sets no prerequisite for the exam, and employers decide what their ads ask for. Job ads show whether employers name it, and we count those. In October 2026, the phrase salesforce certified administrator appeared in 7% of the ads for US Salesforce administrators on Adzuna. Adzuna returned 326 US ads for that job title in the same month.

How we count: we take the ads Adzuna returns for the job-title search salesforce administrator and count those whose text matches the phrase salesforce certified administrator (an approximate match; how we count ads).

An ad that uses only the full current name, Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator, or a short form such as "admin cert" may not match. So the count is a minimum within the ads found for that title search, and it is not a count of ads that require the certification: an ad can list it as required, as preferred or as a plus.

In India, the phrase appeared in 4 of the 50 Salesforce-administrator ads out of 50 in October 2026 (Adzuna; small sample, read with care).

What the count cannot show: how employers weigh the certification against experience, and whether ads that leave it out would still welcome it.

Is the Salesforce admin certification worth it, according to Reddit?

Two posts we collected from r/salesforce, a Reddit forum about the platform, describe the same problem: the certification without experience in a live org, meaning a company's working Salesforce with real users. A poster who passed on the first attempt, mostly self-taught on Trailhead, asked what to do when entry-level listings still asked for years of work in a real org (r/salesforce). Another poster, certified and holding a business degree, reported two interviews and no offer (r/salesforce).

One reply to that second post put the split this way: "The cert gets you past HR filters but hiring managers want to see you have actually built things in a real org" (r/salesforce). HR filters here means the first screening of applications. Replies in the same thread suggested volunteer admin work for a nonprofit, consulting firms and sales-operations jobs as ways to get that experience.

We did not find enough posts about the best certifications for Salesforce admins to report a Reddit view on them; the next-step section uses Salesforce's own pages instead.

What is on the Salesforce Platform Administrator exam?

The exam has 60 multiple-choice questions that count toward your score, plus up to five unscored questions. Unscored questions are trial items that Salesforce mixes in at random and that have no effect on your result. You get 105 minutes, and no notes or online materials are allowed.

The exam is proctored, meaning a supervisor watches you, either at a testing center or online. The questions align to Summer '25, one of Salesforce's seasonal product releases. Salesforce publishes the domains, or topic areas, and their weights:

Salesforce Platform Administrator exam domains and weights:

Domain Weight In plain words
Configuration and Setup 15% setting up the org and its users
Object Manager and Lightning App Builder 15% Salesforce's tools for defining records (one customer or deal) and fields (one detail on it, such as a phone number), and for building app pages
Sales and Marketing Applications 10% Salesforce's features for sales and marketing teams
Service and Support Applications 10% features for customer-service teams
Productivity and Collaboration 10% tools for everyday work and teamwork
Data and Analytics Management 17% managing data, reports and dashboards
Automation 15% Flow, Salesforce's tool for automating steps without code
Agentforce 8% Salesforce's AI agents, software that answers or acts for users

Source: Salesforce, Platform Administrator exam guide, read October 11, 2026.

Flow is part of the Automation domain, not a domain of its own. The guide lists three kinds by name: screen flows, record-triggered flows and autolaunched flows. It also lists the order of execution, meaning the order in which Salesforce runs automated steps. Agentforce is the smallest domain, at 8% of the exam.

How hard is the Salesforce Admin certification?

Hard enough that Salesforce recommends work experience: you need 68% to pass the English version, and the exam is written for people with at least six months as an administrator. Salesforce's exam guide gives 65% for the Japanese version and 68% for the English version, so aim for the English figure if you take the English exam. We found no official pass rate.

Salesforce "highly recommends a combination of on-the-job experience and self-study," its exam guide says. Experience as a user is not the same thing. A poster with five years of daily Salesforce use started studying and wrote: "There are so many concepts and details hiding behind what seems like a simple Salesforce user experience" (r/salesforce).

How hard is it to become a Salesforce administrator?

The Reddit posts we collected describe the job search, not the exam, as where those posters got stuck (see the worth-it section). The exam is the part Salesforce controls. The job also needs experience in a live org, and that is our reading of those posts, not a measured comparison.

What happens if you fail?

You can take the exam three times per release cycle, the period between two of Salesforce's seasonal releases. After a first failed attempt you wait 24 hours, after a second you wait 14 days, and after a third you wait until the next release cycle begins, when your attempts reset. Each retake costs $100 under Salesforce's retake policy.

How much does the Salesforce Admin certification cost?

Salesforce's exam guide sets the fee at $200 plus applicable taxes, and its retake policy prices a retake at half the original fee, $100. Keeping the certification takes one maintenance badge a year, a module on Trailhead; the Salesforce pages we read give no price for it.

Salesforce Admin certification cost by number of attempts, exam fees only (taxes, courses and maintenance not included):

Route How the total is made Total
Pass on the first try $200 exam $200
Fail once, pass on the second try $200 exam + $100 retake $300
Fail twice, pass on the third try $200 exam + 2 retakes at $100 $400

How does Salesforce Admin maintenance work?

Maintenance means a yearly Trailhead module that keeps your certification active. For this certification, it is the Platform Administrator certification maintenance badge on Trailhead, due once a year in the Spring release cycle. The same badge also keeps Platform Administrator II, the second certification in the admin program, active.

If you miss the due date, the certification expires, and so does Platform Administrator II if you hold it. To get them back you must pass each full proctored exam again; the pages we read do not say which fee applies.

How do you become a Salesforce administrator?

Learn the platform, practice in an org, pass the exam and then find a way to get experience with real users. Salesforce sets no degree or prerequisite for the exam; employers set their own job requirements.

  1. Read the exam guide and check yourself against the eight domains.
  2. Work through the Trailhead trailmix, a set of lessons, that Salesforce curates for this exam. The guide also names two superbadges, hands-on Trailhead challenges: Object Relationships and Flow Administration.
  3. If you want a class, the guide lists two Trailhead Academy courses (Salesforce's own training classes), CRT101 and ADX201 (the guide gives the codes; we did not check what each course covers).
  4. Book the exam, online or at a testing center, and pay the $200 fee in the exam guide. Salesforce's retake page names Pearson, a testing company, as the provider that applies the retake price.
  5. After you pass, complete the maintenance badge each year.

How to get a Salesforce admin job with no experience

Build experience in a practice org and document what you build, then look for work where Salesforce is part of the job. The Reddit replies quoted in the worth-it section name volunteer admin work for nonprofits and sales-operations jobs (work on the team that runs a sales department's tools and data) as routes in. Salesforce's own recommendation of six months as an administrator tells you what a hiring manager may expect.

Can you become a Salesforce admin without a degree?

The exam has no degree requirement or prerequisite, so you can earn the certification without one. Whether a job asks for a degree is up to the employer; read the ads for the job you want.

Is there an entry-level Salesforce admin certification for beginners?

Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations is a certification for people newer to Salesforce. Salesforce's own maintenance page also calls the Administrator certification entry-level, and Trailhead's address for Foundations still says associate. Salesforce designs Foundations for people who understand what a CRM does and have up to six months of experience as Salesforce users. It has no retake fee and needs no yearly maintenance. You do not need it before the admin exam, which has no prerequisite.

Which Salesforce certification should you take next?

Platform Administrator II is the official next step in the admin program, and the admin certification is its prerequisite. Salesforce describes Platform Administrator II holders as "seasoned Salesforce Administrators" who use advanced features to solve business problems. The admin page on Trailhead lists these related certifications:

  • Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator II
  • Salesforce Certified Platform App Builder (the name suggests building custom apps in Salesforce, but we did not read its page)
  • Agentforce Specialist, Agentforce Sales Consultant and Agentforce Service Consultant (Agentforce is Salesforce's AI agent product; the Sales and Service ones are named for sales and service teams)

We read only the Platform Administrator II page among these, so we cannot give the others' prerequisites or prices. The best certification for a Salesforce admin after the first one depends on the job: Platform Administrator II stays on the admin path, and the Agentforce certifications follow Salesforce's AI products.

What is the Salesforce admin certification salary?

We have no sourced Salesforce admin certification salary figure. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the agency that publishes US pay data, lists no Salesforce administrator occupation on the page we read, and Salesforce publishes no pay figure on the certification pages we read. Our Adzuna counts record whether an ad names the certification, not what the job pays. To see pay, note any salary range printed in the ten ads from the first step.

The nearest BLS group we found is computer systems analysts, with a 2025 median pay of $105,850 a year (median: half earn more, half earn less). That group covers a broader job than Salesforce administration, so use it only as a loose reference.

Which other certificates fit nearby jobs?

Match the certificate to the tool named in ads for the job you want. If the ads name a marketing platform instead of Salesforce, look at the HubSpot certifications (HubSpot is a marketing and CRM platform) or the Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate. If they ask for reports and dashboards, look at a Tableau certification (Tableau is a charting tool) or Microsoft's PL-300 exam for Power BI, Microsoft's reporting tool.

What we did not check

  • Whether Trailhead lessons or a practice org cost anything: the pages we read do not say.
  • The Salesforce Platform Foundations exam fee.
  • Which fee applies when you re-earn an expired certification, and any price for the maintenance badge.
  • The guide still named the Summer '25 release when we read it; check the guide's version before you book, because domain weights can change.
  • European job markets (we counted US ads, with small UK and India samples), and whether Salesforce offers exam accommodations, for example for dyslexia: we found no sourced answer.
  • Exam languages beyond the English and Japanese versions named in the exam guide.
  • Prices of Trailhead Academy courses and other paid training.

Questions people ask

Is getting a Salesforce admin certification worth it?

Our view: the Salesforce Admin certification (Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator) is worth its $200 exam fee if you already use Salesforce, software that companies use to track customers and sales, and you want a job running it. In October 2026, the phrase salesforce certified administrator appeared in 24 of the 326 US Salesforce-administrator ads on Adzuna, a job-ad search site. Salesforce recommends at least six months of experience as an administrator before the exam, so the certification works best next to hands-on practice.

How much does Salesforce admin certification cost?

The Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam costs $200 plus applicable taxes, and a retake costs $100, half the original price (Salesforce exam guide and retake policy). Passing on the first try costs $200 in exam fees; failing once and then passing costs $200 plus $100, or $300. To keep the certification, you complete a maintenance badge, a yearly module on Trailhead (Salesforce's learning site); the Salesforce pages we read give no price for it.

How hard is the Salesforce admin certification?

The Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam has 60 scored multiple-choice questions plus up to five unscored ones (trial questions that do not count) in 105 minutes. You need 68% to pass the English version, and no notes or online materials are allowed. Salesforce writes the exam for people with six or more months of experience as an administrator and recommends a mix of on-the-job experience and self-study. We found no official pass rate.

How do you become Salesforce admin certified?

To become a Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator, you pass one proctored exam (a supervisor watches you, online or at a test center). There is no prerequisite. Study the exam guide and the Trailhead trailmix (a set of lessons on Salesforce's learning site) that Salesforce links for this exam. Practice the tasks in a Salesforce org (a company's own copy of Salesforce), then book the exam for $200. After you pass, complete one maintenance badge on Trailhead each year, or the certification expires.

Salesforce Associate certification vs Administrator: which should you take?

Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations is a certification for people newer to the platform; it is the entry-level credential that Salesforce's Trailhead address still labels associate, so a search for Associate leads to it. Salesforce's own maintenance page also calls the Administrator certification entry-level. Salesforce designs Foundations for people who understand what a CRM (customer relationship management software) does and have up to six months of experience as Salesforce users. It has no retake fee and needs no yearly maintenance. The Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam has no prerequisite, so you do not need Foundations first; for the admin exam, Salesforce recommends half a year or more of work as an administrator.

What is the Salesforce certified administrator salary?

We have no sourced salary figure for Salesforce certified administrators. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government agency that publishes US pay data, does not list Salesforce administrator as a separate occupation, and Salesforce publishes no pay figure on the certification pages we read. Our Adzuna counts record whether an ad names the certification, not what the job pays. To see pay, note any salary range printed in ten US Salesforce-administrator ads.

How long does it take to become a Salesforce admin?

Salesforce writes the exam for people with six or more months of experience as a Salesforce administrator, which is a recommendation, not a requirement. It gives no study-time figure on the pages we read. The exam itself takes 105 minutes. If you fail, you wait 24 hours before a second attempt and 14 days before a third.
